#17 - From Incarceration to Advocacy: A Journey Through Trauma and Transformation
Episode 16 delivers a gripping, emotionally charged deep-dive into the life of David Breakspear—a man who moved from childhood trauma and systemic exclusion to becoming a powerful voice for criminal justice reform.Host Leon guides listeners through David’s early years as the youngest of six, a child searching for identity while silently carrying the weight of sexual abuse and undiagnosed neurodiversity. After a severe bout of meningitis at age 10, David’s behaviour shifted dramatically, pushing him into a school system that punished instead of understood him. What followed was a painful cycle of exclusion, crime, and incarceration—what David calls his “university of crime.”But the heart of this episode lies in David’s turning point. Facing a life-or-death crossroads in 2015, he chose transformation. A late ADHD diagnosis unlocked clarity, helping him make sense of decades of impulsivity, restlessness, and struggle. From his final prison sentence emerged a new purpose: advocacy. David built a personal blueprint for change and now works with policymakers to champion neurodivergent individuals navigating the justice system. This episode is a raw, redemptive story about identity, trauma, and the power of being truly understood. It’s a reminder that even after years in the dark, transformation is possible—and that lived experience can become one of the strongest tools for change.

# 4 : Codependency
Episode 4: “Codependency : I Am Enough”— with Dr. Angela Downey”Is it codependency… or just being a human with Wi-Fi and abandonment issues? This week on Too Light Too Dark, we’re diving headfirst (with healthy boundaries, of course) into the murky waters of codependency with the brilliant Dr. Angela Downey, author of Codependency: Enough As I Am. Angela brings decades of clinical wisdom, spiritual insight, and the kind of radical compassion that makes you feel like maybe—just maybe—you don’t need to fix yourself before brunch.Together, we ask the big questions:Why is it so hard to stop managing other people’s emotions? Can you be “enough” without being everything to everyone? What would Jung say about your group chat behavior? We unpack how codependency can be a survival strategy born in childhood, reinforced by culture, and often mistaken for love. But don’t worry, it’s not all shadow work and existential spirals. There’s plenty of humor, warmth, and real talk as we explore how to shift from over-functioning fixer to whole human in recovery.Whether you’re fresh into your healing era or a seasoned boundary ninja, this episode reminds you that recovery isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real.A big shout out to Dr Downey for her time 💚Intro music @ali_jaguareyes on IG - our trigger man in Edinburgh You can catch all related content mentioned in the podcast below Enough As I Am (Codependency Workbook) - Available on AmazonEnough As I Grow (365 day guided journal)Facebook The Codependent Doctor https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61575425574243Instagram @DrAngelaDowneyhttps://www.instagram.com/drangeladowney/Threads @DrAngela Downey https://www.threads.com/@drangeladowneyTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@codependentdoctor

#1 - Something from Nothing - Leon and Rhett
Episode 1: Something From NothingIn this debut episode of Too Light Too Dark, we trace the origin story of the podcast — how an idea, born from honest conversation and lived experience, grew into a shared mission. Co-hosts Leon Eckford and Rhett Nicholl introduce themselves, offering a glimpse into their own journeys and the friendship that sparked this space. This episode is a grounding moment — an invitation into a dialogue that doesn’t shy away from contradiction. Too Light Too Dark is a podcast for those navigating the recovery space, whether from addiction, trauma, disconnection, or the quiet ache of not quite belonging. It explores what it means to be whole in a fragmented world. We start by asking: What does it mean to create something from nothing? How do we orient ourselves when the compass of identity, purpose, or belief no longer points to what it used to?At the heart of this project is a commitment to duality — to the truth that light and dark are not opposites, but companions. This is a space where recovery isn’t about perfection, but integration. Where we can hold complexity without collapsing under it.Join us as we step into the conversation — raw, real, and ready to begin.
