MSP Branding In An AI World (EP 1005)
Most of us put huge effort into our tech stack and very little into how our team actually shows up in front of clients. In this conversation with MSP owner, branding coach, and author Lisa Shorr, we talk about why a “solid stack” is not enough if your clients experience you as slow, unresponsive, or robotic. We dig into real stories from the field, including a law firm that fired their IT provider for being “not responsive,” and how simple shifts in communication, presence, and expectations can completely change that story. We also tackle the AI rush head‑on: how to decide whether a new automation actually strengthens or weakens client relationships, where QBRs and client touchpoints fit into a more automated world, and why empathy, adaptability, and critical thinking are still your unfair advantage. If you’ve ever felt the tension between “being efficient” and “being human,” this one will hit home. Chapters 00:32 Introduction to Money, Marketing, and Growth 02:56 The Importance of Human Connection 03:23 Navigating AI and Automation 05:51 Workshops and Trends in MSPs 08:37 Balancing AI and Client Interaction 11:09 Building a Framework for AI Implementation 18:09 The Role of Empathy in Client Relationships 20:55 Success Stories and Client Experiences 23:55 Internal Branding and Image 30:30 Consistency in Branding 35:14 Challenges Faced by MSPs Today 41:42 Unleashing Your Brand with Shore Success === Guest: Lisa Shorr Company: Shorr Success – https://shorrsuccess.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisashorr Your B.R.A.N.D. MSP Billing, Margins And Growth (EP 1004)
I brought Colin back on because he’s one of the few people in our space who’s actually lived it all: tech, MSP owner, and now multiple vendor exits. We walk through how the “simple” stuff like billing reconciliation quietly drains profit from MSPs, with the average million‑dollar shop leaving a shocking amount of money on the table because they aren’t tracking seats, renewals, or vendor price hikes closely enough. Colin breaks down how Gradient’s Managed Billing Reconciliation works in practice and why treating billing like MDR for your finances can free up weeks of internal time while actually improving client trust instead of hurting it. From there, we shift into marketing, which is still the number one challenge I hear from MSPs that want to grow but hate content creation. Colin explains how MSP Studio started as free, canned marketing kits and evolved into MSP Studio Plus: an AI‑driven platform that creates fully branded, non‑cookie‑cutter social content and even runs in an “autopilot” mode so you just review and approve. We talk honestly about agency pricing, the rise of AI, why smaller MSPs can’t always justify $1,500–$2,500 per month on social media retainers, and what “good enough” looks like if you’re under $1M and trying to move up without losing your mind. Chapters 01:10 Introduction to MSP Insights 02:12 Billing Challenges for MSPs 05:50 Price Adjustments and Customer Communication 10:37 Revenue Opportunities in Software Migration 11:19 Introduction to Managed Billing Reconciliation (MBR) 15:04 Overview of Gradient's Pricing Structure 16:30 Marketing Strategies for MSPs 19:54 Launch of MSP Studio Plus 22:52 AI-Driven Content Creation 25:26 The Importance of Marketing Visibility 35:29 Common Misconceptions Among MSPs 40:28 Navigating MSP Growth Strategies 45:19 Closing Thoughts and Future Prospects === GUEST: Colin Knox, Gradient MSP Website: https://www.meetgradient.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/realityknox === COMPANIES / VENDORS / PRODUCTS / BOOKS Passportal: https://www.passportal.com N-able: https://www.n-able.com Kaseya: https://www.kaseya.com ConnectWise: https://www.connectwise.com MSPCFO https://www.mspcfo.com === SPONSORS: Livestream Partner, ThreatLocker: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/threatlocker Technology Partner, NetAlly: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/netally/ Technology Partner: Bvoip: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/bvoip Travel Partner: TruGrid: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/trugrid Digital Partner, Designer Ready: http://itbusinesspodcast.com/designerready === SHOW MUSIC: Item Title: Upbeat & Fun Sports Rock Logo Item URL: https://elements.envato.com/upbeat-fun-sports-rock-logo-CSR3UET Author Username: AlexanderRufire Item License Code: 7X9F52DNML === Connect with Uncle Marv🌐 Website: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/🎙 Host: Marvin Bee🛒 Uncle Marv’s Amazon Store (gear & tools I recommend): https://amzn.to/3EiyKoZ☕ Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/itbusinesspodcastIf you found value in this episode, share it with another MSP, IT provider, or tech entrepreneur. MSP Marketing for Real Growth (EP 1003)
Laura walks me through her “Know, Grow, Scale” framework and how most MSPs are trying to jump straight to lead gen while their business is still “root bound” at the foundation level. We talk about diagnostics, digital health, differentiation, and why your website, offers, and content have to actually say something meaningful before you ever expect your marketing to convert. We also get into mindset: the difference between a 500K MSP and a 5M+ MSP, and what it really means to be “growth ready” as an owner. Laura shares some spicy takes on overhyped Google Ads, what “AI searchable” really means for MSPs, why you should talk about pricing, and how to move forward if you’ve already been burned by a marketing agency. I share how I landed on VULTR for this client, what the initial sales experience looked like, how fast I was able to spin up a Windows Server, and why the simplicity of their model was a breath of fresh air compared to my previous AWS journey. I also touch on Nerdio as a possible front‑end to AWS for those who want the power without the pain. From there, we zoom out into the bigger picture: evaluating SLIDE against Datto, why I sent the SLIDE appliance back even though the tech worked, and what aggressive sales, disappearing commissions, and shifting partner programs are doing to MSPs who are trying to run a stable business on a budget. I talk candidly about losing 150 endpoints, keeping the doors open, supporting family, and still planning for 30 years in business while vendors like AppRiver quietly change how they pay partners. We wrap with what Money Marketing and Growth Month will cover, a preview of the ACES Mac conference, and a few Florida Man stories to keep it all human. Turn Buildings Into ISP Profit (EP 1001)
Most of us have helped clients “call the carrier” or work with a master agent to bring in a circuit, grab a small commission, and move on. Brian flips that script and shows how MSPs can own the relationship by bringing a bulk fiber circuit into the building, carving it up, and billing each tenant under our own brand—while still leveraging master agents and existing carrier relationships. Instead of letting AT&T, Comcast, or Verizon lock in a 10-year deal and toss a small one-time check to the landlord, this model puts the monthly recurring revenue in the MSP’s column and turns the property owner into a real partner. Podnutz Pro Reunion And Legacy (EP 1000)
If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to keep a show going for a thousand episodes while still running tickets, projects, and staff, this one pulls back the curtain. I talk with Matt Rainey, Lalo Nuñez, Martin Obando, and Dawn Sizer about how Podnutz Pro started as a way to teach desktop techs the server side of the house, and how that spirit of “learn out loud” carried into the IT Business Podcast. We revisit the early days of computer repair, WRT54G routers, Windows Server 2003, and A+‑era hardware, then fast‑forward to today’s world of Azure, SharePoint, co‑managed IT, and remote teams spread across the country. Hear unfiltered stories from the original Podnutz Pro crew about why the show was created and how it helped techs move from desktops to servers and networking. Get real talk on burnout, closing or leaving your MSP, and transitioning into roles at other providers while still staying close to the work. Understanding Copilot For MSPs (EP 999)
This conversation with Brian Weiss starts with Copilot, but it quickly becomes an honest look at how unprepared most of us are for AI inside client environments. I talk about being just like my customers—dabbling in random AI tools—while Brian lays out what it actually takes to make Copilot useful: modern workplace, SharePoint/OneDrive, sane file structures, and real governance instead of “S: drive chaos.” We also get into the reality that Copilot isn’t just “another ChatGPT,” it’s an ecosystem of role-based copilots that only work as well as the data and structure we give them. We dig into Purview (including the fact that many of us already have basic capabilities in Business Premium and never turned them on), sensitivity labels, DLP, and why chain of custody should be every MSP’s go-to phrase with law firms and other regulated clients. Brian also shares how his team is going Microsoft‑first with Dynamics, Business Central, and custom agents so AI can sit on top of their PSA, finance, and security data instead of being yet another disconnected tool. It’s a real-world, practical roadmap for MSPs trying to move from “AI curiosity” to actual AI strategy. Stop Losing Money On Clients (EP 998)
I sat down with Larry Cobrin, founder and CEO of MSPCFO, to unpack how MSPs can turn messy PSA data into a clear picture of which clients are actually profitable and which ones are quietly draining the business. Larry broke down the idea of treating clients like a portfolio, normalizing profitability with contribution per hour, and using that lens to decide whether to improve, protect, or let go of certain accounts. We also talked about how this ties directly into EBITDA and exit planning, especially as more private equity money flows into the MSP space and buyers expect real, reliable reporting instead of gut feel. I shared my own story about firing my largest client when the time and revenue just didn’t line up, and we connected that experience back to the numbers Larry sees every day inside MSPCFO. From there we shifted into AI, the risks of “DIY analytics,” and why confident answers from dirty PSA data can be more dangerous than having no data at all. 20 Questions For Selling An MSP (EP997)
Too many of us spend decades building our MSP, missing vacations and pulling all-nighters, only to “decide” to sell when a random LOI hits the inbox. Amy Babinchak has spent years helping owners sell their MSPs through Sell My MSP, and she joins me to walk through the real-world questions, red flags, and blind spots that determine whether you shut it down or cash it out. We talk about planning three to five years ahead, getting your financials and contracts clean, modernizing your stack, and why recurring revenue and profit percentage matter more than that one big whale client you’re so proud of. We also get into the emotional side nobody warns you about: what it feels like to hand over the business you built for 20-plus years, how to think about life after the sale, and why treating your MSP like a resume can change the way buyers see your value. Amy shares how private equity looks at EBITDA and tools, why most deals are still MSP-to-MSP, and how to turn your company into the best-run, least-scary option on a buyer’s list. In this conversation, Tom Wyant from Wyant Technologies joins me to walk through the real‑world impact of switching RMMs, PSAs, documentation tools, security platforms, and even client portals and payment systems. We dig into migrations that looked good on paper but turned into months of cleanup, retraining clients on new portals and payment workflows, and what it actually costs when a tech spends two to three hours a day fixing issues instead of working tickets or projects. Why Listen Understand why switching your RMM/PSA stack can easily cost a smaller MSP tens of thousands of dollars once you factor in labor, cleanup, and confusion. Hear a real‑world breakdown of migrations from LabTech to Continuum to Ninja, from ConnectWise to Halo PSA, and from IT Glue to Hudu, including what actually hurt and what paid off. Learn practical questions to ask vendors about data ownership, export paths, and how your history, documentation, and tickets will (or won’t) move over. See how client‑facing changes like portals, payment processors, remote access tools, and security awareness training can disrupt users and generate extra support load. Head Nerds On AI Strategy (EP 995)
This conversation with Ben Lee and Marc‑Andre from the N-Able Head Nerds team gets right into the questions MSPs are really asking at Empower 2026: how to approach AI strategically, what the new AI management tab actually does, and how to wrap governance and compliance around all of it. We also get into the evolution of automation inside the MSP space, why it’s shifted from “hours of scripting” to more of a teaching and idea-generation role, and how the Head Nerds are helping partners turn those ideas into scalable services. We talk about AI as more than just embedded features: in‑product AI, building your own agents and automations off the platform, and deciding when to use N-Able’s tools versus rolling your own. Ben and Marc‑Andre share what they’re hearing from more mature MSPs—concerns about governance, edge‑case risks, and how to create AI offerings that sit alongside resiliency and security packages—while still keeping things practical and grounded. OpenText's Secure Cloud For MSPs (EP 994)
DePalma's been at it a year since jumping from Datto and Kaseya to OpenText's massive operation—25,000 employees, billions in revenue, but they give his team real autonomy to hit numbers without micromanaging. They've streamlined everything into one Secure Cloud portal, fixed Microsoft 365 pains with better UX and 98.7% in-house support, and launched partnerships that enable MSPs, not compete—like Hats AI for managing client LLMs securely. No more competing product silos from the Zix/AppRiver days; now it's one account manager, transparent pricing, month-to-month terms, and focus on filling your stack gaps, especially for N-Able partners. SIEM And MDR For MSPs (EP 993)
Robert Johnston’s journey goes from Marine Corps cyber operations to running incident response at CrowdStrike, to founding Adlumin and ultimately landing inside N-able as Chief Innovation Officer. We unpack why SIEM and MDR used to be “Fortune 500 only” tech, and how Adlumin intentionally built a cost-efficient, easy-to-use, channel-first platform that MSPs could actually deploy for community banks, credit unions, healthcare, and other compliance-heavy clients. We also talk through the reality for most MSPs: you’re not going to hire 15–20 people to staff a 24×7 SOC, but your clients still expect enterprise-grade protection. Robert explains how MDR lets vendors aggregate security talent and software so MSPs can operate more like MSSPs, and how N-able now ties everything together with three pillars of business resilience: pre-breach hardening, real-time detection and response, and post-breach recovery with Cove. Stop Selling Tools, Sell Outcomes (EP 992)
I sat down with Lewis and Steph from the N‑able Head Nerds crew to unpack what’s really changing in the MSP game: your clients don’t want another tool, they want outcomes and business resilience. We get into the shift from “cybersecurity” as a tired buzzword to a more powerful story around keeping doors open, maintaining revenue, and helping business owners survive their worst day without getting lost in the weeds of MDR, UEM, or whatever the latest acronym is. We also talk through CMMC, governance, and compliance as real revenue opportunities instead of scary alphabet soup. Lewis shares how he’s building executive‑level tabletop exercises and resiliency pulse checks, while Steph walks through practical ways MSPs can package services, improve their websites, and run profitable executive business reviews without immediately throwing money at another tool. We close by talking about why events like Empower matter so much for MSPs who actually want to grow and not stay stuck in a vacuum. Frank Colletti on N‑Able Growth (EP 991)
Frank and I sit down at Empower 2026 to unpack where N‑Able is investing, how AI and UEM are reshaping endpoint management, and what that actually means for MSP service catalogs, pricing, and security offerings. We get into the control-plane vision for UEM, the action layer for security, and how N‑Able is using Enzo and its head nerds to turn field lessons into repeatable playbooks and automation MSSPs can actually execute. We also talk about the human side of the channel: why Frank is still fired up after 23 years, how N‑Able works with 25,000 partners worldwide, and why peer-to-peer sessions at Empower often drive the next set of features and acquisitions. Frank shares how Empower is going on the road, what he’s hearing in one‑on‑one conversations about AI monetization, and why MSPs should be talking AI strategy in every QBR, even if clients haven’t figured out their plan yet. Identity First Security For MSPs (EP 990)
Mike Wise runs Clockwork Networks as a one-man MSP, and he’s doing it intentionally. This wasn’t about staying small because he had to—it’s about building a business around efficiency, standardization, and control. We talked through how he niched into tax professionals and compliance-heavy clients, and how that decision simplified everything from tooling to service delivery. We also got into security, specifically identity-first approaches and passkeys. Mike shared how leaning into Microsoft Entra ID and eliminating passwords has helped prevent real-world attacks. This is one of those conversations that challenges the idea that growth always means hiring more people. Sometimes growth means doing less, better. When Your Service Manager Leaves (989)
We dig into how their MSP quietly turned into a “ticket factory” where work piled up, documentation was thin, and a 20‑year employee held way too much tribal knowledge. From there, Dawn and Dave break down the specific steps they took to fix it: rebuilding processes, enforcing documentation standards, killing weak level one roles, focusing on root cause analysis, and putting real accountability around metrics like reopen rates and first‑time resolution. By the end, you’ll hear a practical roadmap for turning chaos into a more predictable, proactive IT services operation. Why Listen Learn how to move beyond “ticket counts” and start tracking metrics that actually improve service, like reopen rates and first‑touch resolution. Hear how they used root cause analysis on every ticket to permanently reduce recurring issues instead of just closing the same problems over and over. See why they removed weak level one roles and shifted to an experienced‑engineer model to improve client satisfaction and reduce internal friction. CISA’s Incident Reporting Rules: MSP Impact (EP 965)
CISA’s CIRCIA rulemaking could reshape how serious cyber incidents get reported across critical infrastructure—and MSPs are right in the middle of it. In this episode, Uncle Marv breaks down what’s in play, what’s unclear, and what you should be building now so you’re not scrambling when clients (or regulators) start asking questions. Understand the 72-hour incident reporting expectation and the 24-hour ransom payment reporting requirement. Learn why MSPs may be treated like critical infrastructure, not “just vendors.” Get a practical view of what CISA expects inside an incident report (timelines, IOCs, TTPs, impact, mitigation). Hear where CISA is questioning scope: sector-based vs. size-based thresholds, and what that could mean for you. Find the operational gaps you need to close (logging, evidence aggregation, documentation speed). Culture Falling Apart? Try Internal Podcasts (957)
This episode centers on how connection and community shape both workplace culture and personal wellbeing. Lori Saitz shares how she helps companies use internal podcasts to improve communication and build culture, while also telling her story of moving from digital nomad life to creating a grounded, community-focused life in Charlotte. Gratitude, intentional relationships, and honest storytelling run through the whole conversation, from leadership communication to personal health.Top TakeawaysInternal podcasts act as a modern replacement for company newsletters and sporadic town halls, giving leaders a direct, human way to communicate with employees.Lori’s “core four” focus—culture, communication, connection, and community—guides short, weekly 15‑minute internal episodes that employees can easily consume. These internal shows are especially powerful for midsize companies and distributed teams (remote workers, people in trucks, manufacturing staff) who can’t always attend live meetings.Gratitude and grounding practices can be woven into workplace content, helping people reset before or after stressful meetings and stay more centered.Lori’s own shift from nomading to settling in Charlotte highlights the importance of intentionally building community and creating a “nest” for emotional health.Relationships change as people grow; part of staying healthy and authentic is accepting when certain friendships are no longer aligned.Social connection and a sense of purpose are major contributors to longevity and wellbeing, often outweighing purely nutritional or medical factors.=== SPONSORS: Livestream Partner, ThreatLocker: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/threatlockerLegacy Partner, NetAlly: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/netally/Internet Provider, Rythmz: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/rythmzProduction Gear Partner, Liongard: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/liongardTravel Partner: Bvoip: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/bvoipTravel Partner: TruGrid: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/trugridDigital Partner, Designer Ready: http://itbusinesspodcast.com/designerready=== SHOW MUSIC: Item Title: Upbeat & Fun Sports Rock Logo Item URL: https://elements.envato.com/upbeat-fun-sports-rock-logo-CSR3UETAuthor Username: AlexanderRufire Item License Code: 7X9F52DNML === Connect with Uncle Marv🌐 Website: https://www.itbusinesspodcast.com/🎙 Host: Marvin Bee🛒 Uncle Marv’s Amazon Store (gear & tools I recommend): https://amzn.to/3EiyKoZ☕ Support the show: https://ko-fi.com/itbusinesspodcastIf you found value in this episode, share it with another MSP, IT provider, or tech entrepreneur.
