V&V Ep. 139 (part II) Nick Sadler Discusses YWGWYW Demos and Studio album
Here's a Vinyl & Vision first! We made a two parter. The scope of this conversation is legitimately so in depth, I didn't want to cut any of it. Nick is an incredibly sweet and smart guy. Profoundly verbose, which is why this is so long, but littered with so much great insight into the making of the studio album, his personal life and his new release of the demos album. Which you can pick up here!https://clubhell.bigcartel.com/category/vinylIf you're a fan of YWGWYW or Daughters in general, this episode is definitely for you. And definitely stick around or bookmark part II for more details on the demos album, as well as analysis and interpretations of a few songs off the studio album.Much thanks to The Vinyl District for allowing us permission to use this great photo of Nick taken by Rachel Lange at the 9:30 Club in D.C. 12/18/2019https://www.thevinyldistrict.comhttps://www.instagram.com/rhymes_with_bang/If you'd like to get to know us more or support us financially please visit our website at www.psychic-static.comTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.

V&V Ep. 138 Rainer Fronz (Learning Curve Records & Caterwaul Fest)
Do you know Rainer Fronz? In some way you probably do, but it's the plight of the person behind the curtain that few people ever seem to see or notice the efforts of a guy like Rainer. As it is for most record label owners. Fans notice the artists and albums a label puts out more than the guy that's making it happen. Sometimes that's just the way they want it to be. And it's my opinion that only after having had this short conversation with him, he seems to be the type that isn't looking for credit. Knowing you're doing good work and bring joy into people's lives is all one should need in this world, and that's the way I see Rainer. So why have this conversation? Well, for a few of reasons. First, the dude owns Learning Curve Records which has been putting out great music from bands like Hey Colossus, Bronson Arm, Intercourse, Bummer, Gay Witch Abortion, Vaz and even The Hold Steady for the past 25 years. Second, he has co founded Caterwaul Fest which is in its 5th year and is coming up quick! If you haven't got tickets yet, do that now here:https://ticketstripe.com/caterwaul2026Third, as a label owner and fest promoter, getting the word out about these things is part of the job! Fourth, Rainer's not doing so great health wise. He's actually first in line for a heart transplant at the moment and this conversation came to you directly from his hospital room. All of this being said, there are clearly many way in which you can help support Rainer, but if buying all the records from Learning Curve is maybe a little too much to ask, or attending all three nights of Caterwaul there is one more way you can help and that's the GoFundMe set up for Rainer which you can find here:https://gofund.me/833b024e1or buy the records here:https://lcrdistro.com/Thank you in advance. V&V Ep. 137 Bob Bert(Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore) & The New York Dolls
What can be said about Bob Bert that hasn't already been said? The dude is legendary! So I jumped at the opportunity to speak with him, being an artist and musician who, by design or not, has gone on to influence a wide group of people himself. So to be able to pick his mind, even a little, about the perspective of influence of music on a creative person and ultimately discussing an album that was incredibly important to his own development was thrilling. And I think I got some new insights into The New York Dolls album as well as Bob's own process, particularly on his upcoming debut solo release, Beach Bongo Bloodbath, being released by Bar None Records 06/12/26. Vinyl pre orders are available now and you can do that here:http://www.bar-none.com/featured-artists#/bob-bertIf you'd like to find out more about us and how to support us, please visit our website www.psychic-static.com Theme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.

V&V Ep. 136 Claudio Marcio(PILGRIMS) & Los Prisioneros' Corazones
Today's guest is Claudio Marcio. One half of the creative force behind Boston via Chilé's @PilgrimsBandOfficial . They fuse a synth driven, dark wave, post punk cocktail holding onto some of their heritage singing with a mix of English and Spanish lyrics. Their new album, Gemini was released in February and is available now on all formats here:https://pilgrimsbandofficial.bandcamp.com/album/geminiThis is a deep discussion with Claudio going all the way back to his young days growing up in Columbia during the chaotic Escobar cartel days, moving to Chilé shortly after a dismantled dictatorship, finding love for music and ultimately moving to Boston to establish a strong musical career. This whole discussion revolves around the topic of the album Corazones by Los Prisioneros. Los Prisioneros was one of the most popular and successful bands from Chilé during the early 80's through 90's. So we discuss the influence this album had on Claudio as we do a mostly track by track analysis. If you like our little show all that we ask is please give us a like and follow. V&V Episode 135 Lynn Standafer(Enduser) & Hive's Devious Methods
Very excited to have Lynn Standafer a.k.a. Enduser join me today to discuss an album that he considers to be a very influential album to him. And if you know Enduser’s work, that probably comes as no surprise. Now the question is, what do you know about Mike Bell a.k.a. Hive and his 1998 album Devious Methods. Well, probably not much. And I’m sure not for lack of trying. So in more exciting news about this episode, I actually reached out to Mike directly because I couldn’t find much of anything about him or his album, and thankfully he got back to me and agreed to answer some questions from Lynn and me. And I will share that with you here. Follow the link to my website where you can read the whole interview. https://psychic-static.com/written-interviews/And if you know and like Devious Methods, I strongly encourage you to listen to Enduser’s new album, Unquiet, available through Decay recordings. Similar in some ways, but unique in that there is also an ambient quality to it. Listen here and decide for yourself. And if you love it, pick up a vinyl copy today. https://end-user.bandcamp.com/album/enduser-unquietTo find out more about us and ways to support the show visit www.psychic-static.comOr as they say, "buy me a coffee" or strong drink by making a small donation of whatever you like here:https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/ND4B2AU5YY9FLPsychic Static is also releasing a brand new record from Providence noise rock super group, THERE today(1/30/2026)! V&V Episode 134 Nikii Post(In Lieu) & The Melvins' Stoner Witch
Today's special guest is Nikii Post! She is the singer and guitarist for In Lieu, from Minneapolis, who are releasing a new album on Learning Curve Records. Hooligan will be released on Oct. 24th and it is a beautifully heavy record. Nikii's vocals certainly take a center stage with her incredibly powerful raw screaming style. Just this week the band has released their second single off the album with a music video which shows them delivering the goods in studio and it's pretty impressive. you can find that here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIbGk2ILzmkAnd of course you should pick up the vinyl or at least listen to the singles and tell me I'm wrong! Get that here:https://inlieuminneapolis.bandcamp.com/album/hooliganAlbum of discussion being what I imagine Melvins' fans consider a seminal one? I consider it to be one of their best. Not too much facts and stats about this album, but I was able to find some good tidbits for you and learn more about Nikii's artistic development and influence this album had on her. V&V Episode 133 Mark Shippy (US Maple) discusses Long Hair in Three Stages
Mark Shippy is here to discuss US Maple's stunning debut album, Long Hair in Three Stages. Partially because it seemed to difficult to sum up what could have been one influential album that helped shape or inform the work that US Maple was making. But in just discussing that topic a little it becomes very evident that typical classic rock had a big hand in that, but what may have been even more crucial was a lot of soundtrack music by the likes of Michael Small and Basil Kirchin. Second being, Long Hair has been reissued for the third time by Skingraft Records, and the first time on a colored vinyl variant. You can visit their store to pick that up here: https://usmaple.bandcamp.com/album/long-hair-in-three-stages-2Much thanks to Mark Fischer for helping make the connect! We also have a new website (still under construction) www.psychic-static.com "buy me a coffee" or stiff drink! V&V Episode 132 Venus Twins & The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium
What a great band Venus Twins are! If you're not familiar, they're certainly noisy but as I learn in this episode, they've had some musical training, and that shows through in a jazzy, proggy way. Kinda like this album we discuss, The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium. To be honest, this time I only touch on the album in a surface manner to be able to focus more attention to the impact this album had on these guys and more about The Twins' personal musical journey to get to where they are now, and where they're going. Pretty exciting. The last release the Twins put out was called "/\/\/\/\/"(pronounced Stitching) and it's available through ThreeOneG Records. Get it here: https://venustwins.bandcamp.com/album/pronounced-stitching-epAnd don't forget to follow them to find out when the new release and upcoming shows will be. https://linktr.ee/VenusTwinsFind out more about us and support this show by visiting www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.Thank you!

V&V Episode 112 Eddie Shaw of The Monks
It is an honor to bring to you Eddie Shaw! The bass player of The Monks! The Monks have been a long time influence and inspiration to me, personally, as well as being a influence over countless bands since 1966 through today thanks to the rediscovery of the band through Ugly Things Magazine in the 90's. Their album, Black Monk Time, has since been reissue many times through many labels and they have even had some previously unreleased songs released for the first time through Jack White's Third Man Records. It's a wild and incredible story which I am honored to have been able to sit with Eddie and try to get a full description of what was happening at the time, what was informing their direction, the continued legacy and what he's been up to lately. I encourage you all to pick up a copy of his book Black Monk Time through the provided links. Also, listen to the album! It's only available to stream through YouTube at the moment.(Light in The Attic Records I'm looking at you!)If you'd like to know more about us and how to support the show, please visit our website www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut/Orbit.https://www.the-monks.com/https://carsonstreetpublishing.com/books/https://youtu.be/-l2D0QfJSt8?si=dfi_TR1ceq6AarWd

V&V Episode 097 Vashti Bunyan & Lambchop's OH(Ohio)
I am honored to bring to you today, my conversation with Vashti Bunyan. Who is Vashti, you may ask. Well, she has a book out now, with a paperback release coming this fall, called Wayward: Just Another Life to Live. So, if you'd like to know all the details, I implore you to buy it here:https://a.co/d/9XW5tuII'm not trying to support Amazon, I just can't find the publisher's direct website. In a nutshell, Vashti became disheartened by the record industry, decided to quit music and follow Donovan(Yes, that Donovan!) out to a newly acquired land of his in Scotland with her partner at the time by a horse drawn wagon from London. The journey took a year and a half. And all of that lead to the writing of what would become her now seminal and sought after debut album, Just Another Diamond Day.On today's show, she summarizes that journey even better, while discussing with me an album that wasn't necessarily an influence on her music writing, but certainly an album she loves. There are some connections that are made, but this is a little bit of a different conversation. If you're not familiar with her music, you really ought to listen to some of it. Here is a link to a couple of music streaming sites. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4chuPfKtATDZvbRLExsTp2?si=gw8EHzihRN-WFySkIyHP3Qhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/vashti-bunyan/23956529This was a great conversation, and if you like it too please share with a friend, and please rate or review. V&V Episode 092 Martin Bisi(BC Studio, engineer, producer) & The Dresden Dolls
Here's something fantastic! Typically on this show we discuss an influential album with an artist that was influenced by it. But today we have Martin Bisi, to discuss an album that was an influence on him, but through helping to create it. Martin met Amanda Palmer in 2001 prior to The Dresden Dolls having even really fully formed. He followed their development over a year ultimately leading up to their, almost, year long stay at BC Studios to record their seminal debut. In this discussion Martin recounts some of his memories of that recording session, as well as some other stories throughout his years behind the board at BC!SEE the documentary, Sound and The Chaos: The Story of BC Studio, staring Martin Bisi here: https://www.bcstudiobk.com/documentaryREAD about the Voice of Gowanus coalition here: https://www.voiceofgowanus.org/LISTEN to the sounds of new bands that recorded at BC Studios here: https://clonebk.bandcamp.com/album/s-t-splitAND here: https://theresistancecompany.bandcamp.com/album/in-memory-ofand HERE: https://whitesuns.bandcamp.com/SUPPORT us by making any type of purchase from our website here: www.psychicstatic.netTheme song written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.

V&V Episode 089 Alee Karim(The Atomic Bomb Audition) and Pink Floyd's Animals
On this episode, we take you to beautiful, sunny California to speak with Alee Karim. Guitarist and vocalist for The Atomic Bomb Audition. Their new album, Future Mirror, is available now wherever you listen to music. The band's music tends to lean on the heavier side and is categorized as metal for the most part, but there's so much more to this band than just that. Just by listening to the first couple of singles, it's pretty clear that this album has some serious hooks and heavily anthemic moments to grip any casual listener. So, we encourage you to give it a shot. And if you like it, please buy it here: https://theatomicbombaudition.bandcamp.com/album/future-mirrorSome may say, TABA may be too heavy to relate to Pink Floyd, but I'd say there's much more there than meets the eye. So, join us as we dive deep into this 1977 classic. TABA will be performing a record release party at The Golden Bull on Dec. 14th. V&V Episode 088 Mark C (Live Skull) & Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures
Oh Man! This is one of those that really hits all the marks of what this show is all about. Mark C and his band, Live Skull, who have been hard at work as one of those bands that helped define the noise rock genre, is here to explain just that! Through a history lesson of music and art culture from one of the most intriguing era's of music and art from a guy who was living it, while digging deep into his thoughts on what was one of the most influential albums to him as a developing artist at the time. He also mentions Live Skull reissues, what lead him underground punk and post punk in the seventies, and a little about a brand new album. They got plenty of some good old ones too. You can pick some of those up here:https://liveskull.bandcamp.com/Either way, you should follow them to hear about updates as they become available. I've always known of Roger Miller to be a primary member of Mission of Burma, Boston's own forefather's of post punk. So, when I discovered the treasure trove that is Miller's discography(including but not limited to) Trinary System, No Man, Sproton Layer, The Moving Parts, etc. I was(and still am) blown away by his body of work. And it's not slowing down any either. As he mentions in this conversation, there is a new reissue of Sproton Layer in the works, as well as a new experimental electric guitar album, and Trinary System will be playing a couple of shows this weekend to prepare to head into the studio to make a new full length! V&V Episode 057 Nicholas Pentabona/Morgan Berns(BEDTIMEMAGIC) & Plate Six's Battle Hymns...
BEDTIMEMAGIC is an amazing two piece rock outfit from Boston, MA. They've been heralded as one of the best noise outfits to come out of the Boston area, and with good reason. To think that just two people are able to make the type of racket these guys are is impressive. Not only will they blow your head off, but they know exactly how to. So, it was my pleasure to get to know this cooky crew and discuss their latest recordings but also a record that helped them get there. Plate Six's 2005 album, Battle Hymns For a New Republic. V&V Episode 043 Brandon Perras-Sanchez(Death Drop Gorgeous) & Sonic Youth's Experimental Jet Set
What an interesting conversation to have with a talented filmmaker and musician, Brandon Perras-Sanchez. Finally an opportunity to ask the question, "Does the influence of an album have the same effect on a film maker as a music maker?" And I was delightfully surprised by the answer Brandon gave. V&V Episode 032 Marissa Nadler and Leonard Cohen's Songs From a Room
Doom and gloomy, haunting, shoe-gazey, or gothic folk are ways that Marissa Nadler's music may be described. Those may very well be true, but I think there's more to her talent than that. And based on our conversation, there is a metamorphosis coming. Like all great artists, evolutions are inevitable and are typically gateways into the next big chapter of an artist's career. Some may look back and say that 2020 will be remembered as, maybe, the most challenging time of all of our lives. But some may look back on it as a time of rebirth and inner exploration. I am looking forward to what Marissa may make of this situation. On this episode we'll also discuss her early days in Providence, getting over stage fright, and of course, the music of Leonard Cohen. Hence the overwhelmingly dark rant. Good times, great talk. Please find all things Marissa at her website: www.marissanadler.comAnd if you'd like to find out more about us visit: www.psychicstatic.netThank you!Theme music written and performed by Jeff Robbins of 123 Astronaut and Orbit.

V&V Episode 054 Mac Blackout & Brian Eno's Another Green World
As an inexperienced songwriter I’ve been told once, instrumentals can be boring. But that certainly doesn’t apply to the artistry of what these next two subjects are. Mac Blackout is, in my humble opinion, a master visual and sonic artist. His latest album, Love Profess, is the basis of my statement. It’s a completely instrumental emotional rollercoaster, filled with positivity and good will while created in a time of psychic turmoil. It was a pleasure to have this opportunity to break into the mind of a truly great artist about just one small slice of inspirational fodder, Brian Eno's ambient transformation, Another Green World. We go deep into Mac's history, making of his latest record, where Another Green World sits in the making of Love Profess and what's to come next, including LOCUST! Hooray! We've made it to 50! And no better guest to share this occasion with than Joyce Raskin! Badass musician, author, artist and podcaster with exceptional taste in music. Paul has taken his love and experience with music and pivoted into the independent record label realm, which is now 20 years deep with no signs of stopping. In honor and observation of this monumental occasion, Paul has taken on his most grand release yet with a 2022 Subscription Series. We go over all the deets of what this amazing steal of deal will entail. Very limited! Less than 20 spots left, at the time of this release, of a total of 50. If you like Charming Disaster, you may like PJ Harvey. Or, if you like PJ Harvey, there's a good chance you'll also like our guests Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris, the duo that make up Charming Disaster from Brooklyn, NY! Both bands write songs that are complex and intriguing, without beating you over the head with high art. It's enjoyable on it's surface, but the deeper you peel into that onion, you could find yourself crying. This was a great conversation where not only do we find out a lot about what makes Charming Disaster tick, but how this album, Dry(1992), informed them since and still to this day, what the hell is happening in PJ's music and answers the question, "What's so interesting about Marie Curie?" V&V Episode 130 Kelly Catlin discusses Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom
This one's a little different.Today we're joined by Kelly Catlin, the author of the new biography, Kurt Cobain: Forever in Bloom. Different in that we usually have an artist choose an album that was influential to them and the art they make. And I do quite a bit of research and writing. But considering the topic of her book being one of my favorite artists of all time and someone I personally consider to be an influence on me, I just wanted to discuss this book with almost no writing and research. And there really was no other way. For anyone who is a fan of Kurt's and his band Nirvana, you probably have a lot of questions like, "Who is this person?" and "What gives them the authority to write this book?" or "What is this book going to say that hasn't already been said?". All valid questions and all of which I got answered here. The long and short of it is it's a great book with a lot of new insights into who Kurt Cobain was. Kelly took on this project as a labor of love with her inspiration coming directly from a family member who also took their own life in hopes that she could honor his memory while also trying to help others who may be suffering from mental health issues. 50% of the proceeds of this book will be going to multiple charities. A full list of those charities is included in this book, but you can also go to the author's website to get them.https://www.kellycatlinauthor.com/theorganizationsAnd get the book here: https://geniusbookpublishing.com/collections/genius-music-books/products/kurt-cobain-forever-in-bloom-paperback?variant=50047253184791Speaking of charities, Kelly is hosting her book launch at Factory Records in Dover, NJ on March 23rd. 100% of the proceeds from this event will be going to Ginnie's House Children's Advocacy Center. V&V Episode 129 Micah Schnabel(Two Cow Garage) & Tom Waits' Nighthawks at the Diner
This is a very candid interview with who I consider a friend. Micah has long been a troubadour and a road dog since the early 2000's fronting his band, Two Cow Garage. Since Two Cow's dissolution Micah has been releasing music on his own. Aided and supported by his equally inspiring partner, Vanessa Jean Speckman, the two have been hitting the road together just trying to earn an honest living doing what they love. His latest album, The Clown Watches The Clock, is a stark depiction of dismal and sometimes bleak moments of living in this country, with some acknowledgment or at least hope for brighter and better times. You can find that and all other releases by Micah at his website https://micahschnabel.com/ and be sure to follow him on all social media accounts too find his latest whereabouts and tours. He will most likely be near you soon! And as far as influential albums are concerned, he picked a doozy. I was interested in trying to find the connection of Tom Waits' Nighthawks and what Micah does. I think it's a little less obvious than you might think, and realistically we just had some fun with this topic. This is not quite the deep dive I usually take when speaking about an album. Still interesting and sprinkled with facts about Tom and this album. If you'd like to know more about us and how you can help support this show, please visitwww.psychicstatic.net and make any purchase at all. V&V Episode 128 Colin Dawson(Haunted Horses) & Nico's Desertshore
First episodes of the new year are always exciting and this one is no exception! This is a very in depth conversation with an interesting artist who describes, in this episode, what kind of music and art he was exposed to basically since birth and how that must have colored his sonic palette to help him create some of the dark and foreboding textures he uses in his band, Haunted Horses. His band has released their new full length album Dweller on the 31G Records imprint on three beautiful slabs of wax which you can choose from here: https://hauntedhorses.bandcamp.com/album/dweller Their music is characterized by its dissonant, heavy textures and ominous vocals, which makes sense when you bump them up against an album like Nico's 1970 album, Desertshore. So Colin and I dive deep into the history and background of the beautiful yet dark and strange Nico to try to find what about this album helped to shape a portion of how Colin sees music. If you'd like to find out more about Colin and Haunted Horses you can visit their website, https://www.spookyponies.com/. If you like the show don't forget to subscribe, like and share. V&V Episode 127 the Triceratops & Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come
The Triceratops are a power noise pop duo from NY. That description may make one think, "that genre doesn't exist!". And you'd be right! Though some of their songs have a very familiar 90's indie rock vibe to them, they still have the ability to throw in some bone rattling, thunderous noise rock elements. So, much like the album of discussion on this episode which is called "The Shape of Punk to Come", that could describe the Triceratops as well. You be the judge. Listen to their new album available though Learning Curve Records here: https://thetriceratopsnyc.bandcamp.com/album/charge Follow them on socials and see them live.
