13: The Missing Foundation for Hormones, Autoimmune Symptoms, and Longevity

Somatic work is something you might be hearing everywhere—on social media, in coaching spaces, in therapy conversations. And yet, when I ask women what somatic work actually is, most people pause… or they describe a practice they’ve seen, without really understanding what’s happening underneath it.So today, I want to slow this conversation way down—especially for women navigating perimenopause and autoimmune symptoms—because somatic work is not a trend. It’s not a personality type. It’s not just breath work. And it’s not something you add after you fix your hormones, your diet, or your supplements.Somatic work is the foundation that allows all of those things to actually work.If you’re in midlife and your body suddenly feels unfamiliar…If your hormones feel unpredictable…If you’re doing all the ‘right’ things and still feel exhausted, inflamed, wired, or shut down…There is nothing wrong with you. What’s often happening—especially in perimenopause and autoimmune conditions—is that the nervous system is under-resourced.And no amount of willpower, mindset work, or even talk therapy alone can override a nervous system that is stuck in survival.Somatic simply means of the body.Somatic work is the practice of learning how to listen to, respond to, and work with your body—particularly through the lens of your nervous system.Instead of asking, ‘Why do I feel this way?’Somatic work asks, ‘What is my body experiencing right now?’Instead of analyzing or fixing, it focuses on sensation, safety, and capacity. This is important—somatic work is not about forcing yourself to calm down. It’s not about controlling your breath or making your body do something it doesn’t want to do.It’s about building a relationship with your nervous system so your body can return to regulation more naturally.I want to be very clear here.Talk therapy is powerful.Insight matters.Language matters.Top-down approaches—like talk therapy, mindset work, and cognitive reframing—help us understand our experiences. But somatic work is bottom-up.It works through sensation, breath, rhythm, movement, and safety cues. And for many women—especially those with autoimmune conditions or perimenopause-related nervous system sensitivity—talk therapy alone often isn’t enough.Because your body might understand… but it doesn’t yet feel safe.Healing happens fastest when top-down and bottom-up approaches work together. This is where everything comes together.Your hormones respond to safety.Your immune system responds to stress signals.Your digestion, sleep, energy, and inflammation all take cues from your nervous system. So if your nervous system is living in chronic fight-or-flight—or collapsing into shutdown—your body is receiving the message that it’s not safe to repair, restore, or regulate. That means:• Hormones struggle to stabilize• Autoimmune symptoms can flare more easily• Perimenopause feels more intense• Longevity strategies don’t land the way you expectSomatic work helps retrain the body to experience safety again—not intellectually, but physiologicallMandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again. For VIP step-by-step support, apply for Mandi's Signature System Here and she'll be in touch to invite you to a call. Or, if you’ve been carrying so much—managing symptoms, responsibilities, and expectations—all while feeling like your body and mind are no longer cooperating, grab a Back In Control Session with Mandi here.

12: A Step of Faith: Showing Up After Autoimmune & Perimenopause

Grieving The Loss of Who I Was Before Autoimmune DiseaseThere was a time when I thought:“If I don’t look the way I used to, I shouldn’t be on camera.”“If people notice, they’ll focus on that instead of the message.”“Maybe it’s better to just stay behind the microphone.”And maybe you understand that feeling.Maybe your body has changed.Maybe perimenopause has shifted your weight, your skin, your energy.Maybe autoimmune has taken something from you.Maybe you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror the way you once did.I know that grief. But here’s what I’ve learned:Healing isn’t just about calming symptoms. It’s about reclaiming your identity. It’s about saying —“My body may have changed, but my calling hasn’t.”For years, I did the diets. The supplements. The pushing through. The over-researching every symptom. The trying to “fix” myself. And some of it helped. It really did. But what changed everything was nervous system regulation.Somatic work.Learning to feel safe in my body again.Learning to stop fighting it.And part of that healing has been allowing myself to be seen. Not perfectly. Not filtered. Not ten years younger. But honestly. It’s me saying:If I want to help women stop hiding because of autoimmune…I can’t keep hiding. If I want to teach women to feel grounded and confident in perimenopause…I have to embody that courage first.I don’t want my face to be a distraction. But I also don’t want fear to be my leader. And if you are a woman walking through autoimmune, perimenopause, body changes, insecurity, overwhelm — I want you to hear this:You are still called. You are still beautiful. You are still powerful. And your story is not disqualified just because you’ve experienced some changes. Faith Over FearThere has been a quiet but persistent call on my life to help women in this season. Not just with symptoms. But with identity. With nervous system healing. With learning to live in their bodies again instead of fighting them. And I know obedience rarely feels comfortable. But it feels aligned. So this is me choosing alignment over comfort.Your First Step Towards Safety and HealingIf you’re new here, I want to invite you to watch another episode that feels deeply connected to this one. It’s called:“4 Mistakes I Made in My Autoimmune Journey You Don’t Have To.”In that episode, I share the things I wish someone had told me earlier — the patterns that kept me stuck, and what actually shifted my healing. And if this episode resonated…If you’ve been hiding in some way…If your body has changed and you’re learning to love it again…I created a free guide called ‘4 Ways to Begin Restoring Your Sense of Balance and Show Up for What Matters Most.’It walks you through four gentle practices to help your body begin shifting out of survival and back toward regulation. You don’t have to walk this alone.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

11: A Simple Reset for Autoimmune + Perimenopause

If you’re living with autoimmune symptoms and perimenopause, you may have already tried everything…diet changes, supplements, sleep hacks, workouts, therapy…and still feel like you’re stuck in a loop of fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, and overwhelm. Here’s what nobody tells you:Your nervous system is the foundation of everything else.Because if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, your body cannot heal — no matter what you do.So the question isn’t what else should you do…It’s: how do we help your nervous system feel safe again? And the truth is, it doesn’t require another thing. It requires presence. Not adding more to your plate — but simply being fully present in the things you already do every day.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

(Especially If You’re Also Living With Autoimmune Symptoms)Have you been feeling off—like your body is changing in ways you can’t quite explain, but no one seems to take you seriously?Maybe you’re exhausted all the time, yet sleep feels completely elusive. You’re wired and tired at the same time.Your moods swing without warning.Your patience is thinner.Your brain feels foggy and slower—like you’re sleepwalking through life but not really making sense of any of it. You don’t recognize yourself anymore. So you do what you’ve always done:You try harder. You clean up your diet. You push through workouts. You add the supplements. You try to stay disciplined. And yet… nothing works the way it used to.Then, when you finally say something—when you finally ask for help—you’re told:“You’re too young for perimenopause.”“Your labs look normal.”“It’s probably just stress.”But what if it’s not just stress?Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

6: Why Self-Love in Midlife Is Survival, Not Vanity

Today we’re diving into a topic that often gets misunderstood, minimized, or even judged—self-love. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I don’t have time to take care of myself” … or maybe even feeling guilty for wanting to?Do you wonder if self-love is just another buzzword, or something women who have it all together talk about? When we hear the phrase self-love, it can trigger mixed reactions. And it often comes down to some limiting beliefs that we hold onto. Some of us think of bubble baths, spa days, or maybe affirmations in the mirror. Others might roll their eyes, thinking it’s just fluff or self-indulgence. But here’s the truth: in midlife, when your body feels different, your energy isn’t the same, and life is pulling you in a hundred directions, especially when you’re navigating autoimmune struggles, perimenopause, or the demands of leadership and caregiving.Self-love isn’t vanity—it’s survival. That’s exactly what we’re diving into today.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

5: Reclaiming Your Beauty in Perimenopause

For most of my life, I thought being smaller was the answer.A smaller body. A smaller appetite. A smaller presence.I learned early on that beauty was something to achieve, not something I already had. Maybe you’ve felt that too?I could follow the rules—track every calorie, spend hours at the gym, squeeze myself into the ‘right’ size jeans—and for a while, it worked. At least on the outside. But here’s the truth: no matter how much I shrank my body, I never felt like it was enough. And then midlife happened. Autoimmune happened. Perimenopause happened.Suddenly, my body wasn’t responding the way it used to. My old tricks stopped working, and I was exhausted—mentally, emotionally, physically.Have you been there?Maybe you’ve been trying everything you used to do—cutting calories, exercising harder, pushing through the fatigue—only to feel like your body is betraying you. What if I told you it’s not your body that’s failing you? What if the real issue is a culture that’s been telling us for decades that our worth is measured in pounds, clothing sizes, and how young we look? That’s what we’re talking about today: how beauty standards break us—especially in midlife—and how you can finally start building a better relationship with your body.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

4: Why Midlife Women Mistake Survival Mode for Laziness

Have you ever looked around at everything waiting for your attention and thought… “Why can’t I just get it together?”Maybe you’ve compared yourself to other women who seem to do it all—working full-time, raising kids, staying fit, keeping a perfectly clean house—and wondered, “What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I have that kind of energy anymore?”And maybe you’ve even said it out loud… “I must just be lazy.”I know that feeling, because I’ve said the same thing to myself. I remember standing in my kitchen one day, completely exhausted from doing what seemed like the bare minimum. My body ached, my brain felt foggy, and I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t just push through like I used to. The word lazy kept echoing in my head. But here’s the truth: what I was feeling wasn’t laziness at all. It was survival mode. And when your body is in survival mode, because of autoimmune flares, because of perimenopause, or simply because of the weight of carrying so much in midlife—it changes everything. The truth is, you’re not broken, you’re not weak, and you’re definitely not lazy. You’re human. And your body is trying to protect you in the only way it knows how.So today, I want to unpack what’s really happening underneath the surface, why it matters that we stop labeling ourselves as lazy, and how understanding this shift can free you from the shame spiral and help you move forward with more compassion for yourself.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

3: The Hidden Connection Between Stress, Autoimmune, and Perimenopause

It’s amazing how one little word — “should” — can quietly take over your life. You should take this. You should be more like that. You should push through, even when your body is begging you to stop. You should have done more, achieved more, been more. And over time, all those “shoulds” pile up. They don’t just shape your choices—they shape your energy, your confidence, and even your health. Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you try, it’s never enough? Or like your own body and mind are working against you?For me, one “should” changed everything. It was the domino that tipped me into my first autoimmune disease… and then, just a few years later, perimenopause added its own challenges. This is the story of how it happened, how I learned to listen to my body, and what it took to finally stop letting “should” run my decisions.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.

2: One Shift Women with Autoimmune Need Now

If you're feeling scattered, stretched thin, or just off, you’re in the right place. One of the most common things I hear from women dealing with perimenopause and autoimmune symptoms is:“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”Behind that statement is usually a deeper disconnection—from your body, your energy, your rhythm, your intuition. So today, I want to offer you one small shift. It’s a doable, body-based practice to begin restoring your sense of balance and control. If you’re in the thick of perimenopause or navigating autoimmune flares, “balance” might feel laughable.Your days feel scattered, your body unpredictable, your emotions on edge, and your energy is at an all-time low.But here’s the truth:Balance isn’t just a feeling. It’s a state your body can return to—and it’s trainable.Mandi Scovern helps women leaders facing autoimmune and perimenopause symptoms restore their confidence and vitality so they can do what they love to do again.
