Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking.

Join us, Wesley "Yeti Legs" and Marie "Basecamp" Black on the YETI WALKS INTO BASECAMP: Talking. Thru. Hiking. Podcast, where we discuss all things in the wonderful world of hiking. Each episode will cover various hiking topics, the 181 days we spent on the PCT, interviews with fellow hikers/trail angels, or even chats with gear junkies. We are a married couple who love hiking and ultra running. In 2022, we sold everything to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with a continuous footpath, followed by completing the TMB. Since then, we've hiked even more long trails. Welcome!

E91 | What’s Happening In The Arctic? | w/ Alex Lee of POW | Drunken Trees, Permafrost, Caribou, Oil, Wolverines & More

In This Episode - Alaska may be one of the few [truly] wild places left in the United States, and while there aren’t any massive thru-hikes there (yet), the place is chock-full of wildlife, rugged terrain, hiking trails, and the highest mountains in the United States. Located in and near the Arctic Circle, it’s meant to be cold- so what’s happening up there that might be changing some of that raw, cold ruggedness?Tune in to our chat with Alex Lee, Director of Science and Education at Protect Our Winters (POW) where we cover drunken trees, permafrost, caribou, polar bears, oil extraction, the roadless rule, the Forest Service shifts, grizzlies, and even the most rugged critter (in my opinion) out there, a wolverine. Thanks to Alex and POW for being on the show. Links/Sources - POW Instagram | @ProtectOurWintersAlex Lee Instagram | @mountaindinosaurPOW Website | protectourwinters.orgEpisode Specs - Hosted and produced by Wesley Black Edited by Wesley BlackIntro and Outro track is Appalachian trail by “The Fire Once Lost”, an American/Bluegrass artist from Denmark. E89 | How Hikers & Gear Brands Are Taking The Fight To Climate Change | An Environmental Corner Episode

Episode Summary: The bad really makes you appreciate the good. That's why we wanted to wrap up with the "bad" in our Nation's fight against climate change using a healthy dose of good. We discuss a few things our Country is doing to try and roll back progress against fighting climate change, but then what fellow hikers and a few hiking brands are doing to keep on bringing the fight. You don't have to take a monumental step to make some solid change. Even picking up a single piece of trash can do a world of good, whether you know it or not.We wrap with a bit of Q&A about climate change from our lead editor Charlotte.A huge thanks to Megaman, RecPak, Sawyer, Ken Posner, and our anonymous hiker for taking the time to share what they are doing to make the world and hiking community a better place!!Links/Sources:Understanding the Arctic polar vortex | NOAA Climate.govRemote town of Stehekin left staggering by floodwaters | The Seattle TimesMelting Ocean Ice Affects Sea Level – Unlike Ice Cubes in a Glass – NASA Sea Level Change Portalclimate - Why don't green house gases escape into space? - Earth Science Stack ExchangeDesalination technologies and their environmental impacts: A review - ScienceDirectHasn't Earth warmed and cooled naturally throughout history? | NOAA Climate.govThe US Has Officially Left the Paris Agreement | Earth.OrgTemperatures Rising: NASA Confirms 2024 Warmest Year on Record - NASAIPCC - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate ChangeWMO confirms 2024 as warmest year on record at about 1.55°C above pre-industrial levelOne Year of Trump: How the US Reversed Climate ProgressFederal Court Reverses Trump Administration’s Past Cuts To ESA" | SEJFederal Court Reverses Trump Administration’s Past Cuts To ESAFederal Court Strikes Down President Trump’s Attacks Against Endangered Species Act, Restores Bedrock Environmental Law to Pre-Trump Status - EarthjusticeLargest wildfire in Nebraska history now nearly 100% contained | Nebraska Public MediaOnly 50 of these whales are left in existence. E84 | What The Heck Is Global Warming & Climate Change? | An Environmental Corner Episode

If you love it, you'll give a sh*t.Climate change? Global warming? Same terms? Different? In 15 minutes, I do my best to break down what all these words mean in the common tongue; in a way that most anyone is able to understand because at the heart of it, it's a difficult topic to wrap your head around. And what's causing these phenomena? Greenhouse gasses. It's important for anyone to understand global warming and the changes it elicits, but especially for folks who love to be outside- like hikers. Global warming is not a human caused phenomena. It happens naturally, but it's increasing at an exponentially unnatural rate due to humankind.Hikers and tree huggers unite so that we can all better understand what's happening in and to our world. Knowledge is power, so let's level up and gain more power, together.*The majority of information for this episode was quote and pulled from both these NASA and National Geographic articles. E82 | Hiking 8000 Miles For Nature | A Walk For The Wild with Wesley "Megaman" Tils | An Environmental Corner Episode

Wesley "Megaman" Tils plans to spend approximately 1.5 years through an entire winter season...hiking for nature, for conservation, for the wild. The trek will run some 8,000 miles from the easternmost to westernmost points of the contiguous United States, along a path that he designed himself. The reason for using his entire savings and pushing his body to its limits- to raise awareness (and funds) for the conservation entities that protect our wild spaces, and to bring others [in spirit] into the backcountry with him. Megaman feels that such an undertaking is more important now than ever as the current administration threatens environmental and conservation regulations which protect our public lands, federal lands, and all the life that calls those places home. What's more, even Megaman's dream job in archaeology is at risk through weakening of the Antiquities Act.Chasing the legacy of his ancestor, a vagrant viking who sawed off his own leg due to frostbite, Megaman has a resume of long-distance trails that leaves little room for concern that he will be able to complete this journey.Listen in to hear the what, how, and why of Megaman's plan to "Walk for the Wild".To find Megaman:Megaman's FacebookMegaman's TikTokMegaman's InstagramMegaman's YouTubeMegaman's GoFundMeKeywords: #conservation #nature #walking #hiking #loveofnature  ~Created, hosted, and produced by Yeti Legs and Basecamp (aka Wesley and Marie Black) ~Edited by Yeti legs ~Intro and Outro track is Appalachian trail by “The Fire Once Lost”, an American/Bluegrass artist from Denmark.  Check out the album, and their IG page.   Yeti Legs’ and Basecamp’s Socials: Podcast IG: @yetiwalksintobasecamp Our Instagram: @theginger_and_thejoy Our [FREE] Patreon: Yeti Walks Into Basecamp Patreon Linktree: @thegingerandthejoy

E67 | PCT | Week 22 | Asphalt Desert & Bridge of the Gods | Sisters to Cascade Locks, OR

Episode Summary: We were hiking along an asphalt desert, quite literally...it was desert and farmland in Oregon, but we were walking the highway with no shoulder. Our thighs, shins, and feet were riddled with painful red splotches-heat rash. But thank goodness we had angels along the way, people going out of their way to offer us water, air conditioning, and shelter. We circumvented the Lions head closure with a road walk and rewarded ourselves with the famous Timberline Lodge buffer (every hiker’s dream). Our week 22 of the PCT was jam-packed, and concludes with a pretty stunning hiking speckled with waterfalls, and new hiker friends as we arrive at Cascade Locks. Cascade Locks signifies the end of Oregon (NOBO) and the beginning of the last state of the PCT, Washington. Oh, and Yeti was too drunk to say hello to his then PCT hero, and we stayed in an asylum converted to a hotel. E65 | The Last Englishman | with Keith "Fozzie" Foskett [Dromomaniac & Author] | A Book(s) Reflection | On Thru-Hiking, Depression, & Ghosts

Episode Summary: Inspiration. Inspiration is the first step towards action. Before we hiked the PCT in 2022, we were inspired to hike it, not only from online sources, but more importantly by hikers who took the time to tell their long-form stories, in books. Keith “Fozzie” Foskett wrote one of two books which gave Basecamp and me the final push we needed to commit to the PCT. Years later, here we are sitting down to chat with the author of The Last Englishman. Fozzie shares some of his highs and lows from an impressive thru-hiking career, covers topics from his favorite U.S. breakfast, a health scare on the CDT, struggling with depression, and even his ghostly experience on the PCT. This is less an interview and more catching up between old friends at a cozy pub. Listen in and share this time with us.We wanted to share Fozzie’s thru-hiking resume, and thebooks he’s published to give you an idea of just how much this guy has done. Episode Summary: Today’s episode of YWIB is brought to you by…mosquitos…lots and lot of em’. But seriously this week 20 on the PCT was an annoying, nagging stretch filled with the little bloodsuckers. But there’s always a silver lining, and that silver lining was all the resort hopping we were doing, the epic views from the lip of Crater Lake, and the fact that we met both Devil Fish, and who’d become a life friend, Songbird. The week ends with our setup for a 24-hr challenge. Lastly, we wrap up with an environmental corner focusing on some weird stuff happening on the Pacific Coast of the United States. E63 | Symbiosis Gear | Backpacks For People With Boobs | Sarah Berkeley [Founder]

Episode Summary: Boobs. This episode is for everyone, but especially for folks…who have boobs- that’s female, male, or anyone else who may have a curvy figure. Sarah Berkeley noticed there was a need in the outdoor industry for backpacks that fit the curvy physique, a problem she herself struggled with while hiking the PCT. Embracing her pioneer spirit, she decided to do something about it. Thus, Symbiosis Gear was born. Symbiosis creates backpacks for anyone to use, but packs that most definitely accommodate a bit of extra curve. In this episode of YWIB, we talk with Sarah through her process of hiking and filling the niche to create “backpacks for people with boobs.” We also discuss tariffs, and how they may have affected some of your favorite outdoor cottage companies. Oh yes, and there was definitely mention of simultaneous couples’ trail poops. E62 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 19 | Ashland, AeroPress Coffee, and Tabletop Naps with Amber | Seiad Valley to Hyatt Lake Resort

Episode Summary: In this episode we cover our Week 19 on the PCT where Amber (Basecamp's sister) comes to join us for a few days! Seiad Valley was a tough climb to manage so we should have chugged chocolate milk. But, we had Asland in our near horizon...which meant food. Zeroes in Ashland with Amber & Ryan (her hubby) refilled our cup, and seeing Amber on trail was a true inspiration for us. She killed 20+ miles and even lugged an AeroPress coffee maker with her alongside a 2-3 person tent (by herself). She passed out on a table of the Hyatt Lake Resort from exhaustion, and then Marie was stricken with some unknown illness which knocked her out too.Links:Leve Outdoors | Website10% Discount Code: YETIWALKSINTOBASECAMPKeywords: PCT, Pacific Crest Trail, Seiad, chocolate milk, Amber, family, hiking ~Created, hosted, and produced by Yeti Legs and Basecamp(aka Wesley and Marie Black)~Edited by Charlotte Royal ~Intro and Outro track is Appalachian trail by “The Fire Once Lost”, an American/Bluegrass artist from Denmark. E61 | Sawyer & CNOC | Water Is Life [Reprise] | with Katie "Oats" Houston & Rebecca "Gandalf" Booroojian

In this week's [Reprise] episode, we cover our 2-part series, "Water Is Life" with 2 representatives from Sawyer and CNOC, those widely popular names in the backpacking/thru-hiking community that have, since the original recordings in 2024, created a collaboration line of products (see that in the cover photo). It was only a matter of time, right? Katie Houston, of Sawyer...and someone who loves Dungeons & Dragons more than we knew, covers all the ins and outs of Sawyer filter use/care, healthy-alternative bug sprays, and tells us a bit about why we, as hikers, sometimes suck at treating our water filters & bladders well. Rebecca Booroojian, of CNOC, then speaks a bit to our favorite, durable water bladders, what they are made of, and how they are transitioning away from PFAS (those nasty forever chemicals). Rebecca is a font of knowledge, and we think you'll love what she has to say. Also, did you know that CNOC is owned by Minimal Gear, which is also the lovely owner of Diorite? Diorite Gear makes trekking poles. The poles are fantastic! They make plenty of other goodies. E60 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 18 | Encounter With D******d Steve | Dunsmuir to Seiad Valley

Episode Summary: In this episode we cover our Week 18 on the PCT where we get an older lady riled up because of our wonky Garmin, meet Dickhead Steve, spend time in Etna with a South African couple, hike through some of the more stunning mountains of the PCT (Trinity Alps), suck it up while hiking in the rain for 3 days (obviously we have not done the AT yet), and set ourselves up for success to have a milkshake breakfast in Seiad Valley. Additionally, if you’ve read his far, lucky you! Sawyer, this episode’s sponsor, is giving away a care package to the 1st person who listens to the episode and reaches out. Listen in to figure out how! Lastly, we cover a brief Environmental Corner segment about litter and trash on trail, and how it becomes other chemicals/compounds later on. E59 | Pacific Crest Trail | Week 17 | We Meet Jupiter & Deer Eat Our Pee | Hat Rim to Castle Crags & Dunsmuir

Episode Summary: In this episode we cover that oh-so-lovely strip of the PCT known as the Hat Rim Trail. A hiker café awaited us before starting, but then the brutal heat was a poor hiking companion for Basecamp. Oh, we met Jupiter and didn’t even know it at first! A magical trail angel, Chris Hyde, treated us like royalty from Gondor, Deuces wore tailor-made custom-fitted cutoff jean shorts, we skipped Burney Falls to eat ice cream and order Jolly Gear matching shirts, two bucks ate our pee, Basecamp’s friends hosted us, and we took a poorly planned zero in Dunsmuir, which we would probably avoid over heading into Shasta! We wrap up in our Environmental Corner segment with my (Yeti) covering the findings from my capstone project (thesis)about trash on trail. SURPRISING LIFE LESSONS IN GENEROSITY, GRATITUDE, AND CURIOSITY FROM AN ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKER.For almost 2 hours, we were lucky enough to have Glen on our show to cover a few of his anecdotes from the ultralight backpacking universe, but also some more introspective insights on life, having gratitude and giving to others, while also prioritizing the needs of our loved ones and ourselves. Glen has quite the tale to tell, including how to better stay connected to those you've met/think about often, his stunning wife, living a minimalist lifestyle, and his harrowing friend that saved Glen's life. In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp: Talking. Thru. Hiking. we cover week 16 on the Pacific Crest Trail where we FINALLY hit the midpoint of the PCT, that's 2653/2 = 1326.5. Most of the hiking felt like it was in burn zones, but there was still greenery out there, somewhere, over yonder. Yeti picks up a baby squirrel and skips lunch before a massive climb and just about crashes, then chugs teriyaki sauce. We do some early morning hiking through Lassen Volcanic NP and then barely make it to the Hat Creek RV Park for some cold drinks and snacks before it rains, go figure. Oh, and Yeti went fishing for bears! In our Environmental Corner we discuss gray/grey wolves (Canus lupus) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 alongside what our current administration is looking to change about it. And on a happier note, we finish with a squeaky clean, hot off the recording studio song from The Fire Once Lost: Someone Else Just For You. Etna alongside Audible and Frenchy. Yeti almost went hypothermic AFTER becoming sick from bad cheese, the rains pour for an entire day, we spend a zero in Reno at a casino (not gambling) with Basecamp's aunt/uncle, and hop back on trail into the great blue yonder. We wrap up with our environmental corner where we discuss wolves! E50 | Wrightsock | The Wright Solution To Blisters | Russ Coillot [Director of Sales & Marketing]

In today's episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp we discuss feet...but more specifically what you put on them. A good pair of socks is no less important than a good pair of shoes for any hiker, backpacker, or thru-hiker. Hikers will wear two pair of socks to reduce friction and therefore blisters on the tootsies that take them a few miles or even thousands of miles. [Insert] Wrightsock - an American owned name that creates double-layered socks all sourced and crafted in the U.S. We sit down with Russ Coillot, the Wrightsock's man with a vision to spread the Wrightenberry (the family behind the socks) name to walkers, runners, and hikers alike. It's a fascinating story that began in 1948 and lead to Wrightsock being one of the major socks distributed at REI today. We sip on whiskey, talk shop, and just have a great time chatting with Russ to see how blisters are removed from the hiking equation. Listen in!

E44 | Nick "Desert Jesus" Fowler | A Nobody Who's Obsessed With The West | Fireside Chats

Episode Summary: Red urine, a dissolving toe, can’t squat to poo, drinking water from a trashcan hiking over 2000 miles in undies that end up buttless, 50+ mile days…persistence, determination, finisher, husband, and father. These are all words and phrases that describe Nick “DJ or Desert Jesus” Fowler, a man who’s a bit less man, and more athletic deity if you ask us. Nick sits down with us to cover just what it takes to FKT trails, push yourself beyond your limits, how to cope with regrets from trail, and impending fatherhood. Honestly, we will probably listen to this episode several times because we just love this guy. Cheers to you, Nick- a true man who's obsessed with the west, but definitely not a nobody. Topics: Nick Fowler, FKT, PCT, father, beast, fastest  The Scoop: Want to hear all of ourepisodes, including the Basecamp Subscriber episodes (B1, B2…)? ABOUT THIS SHOW

Welcome!
