Ai is everywhere and quickly taking over. ChatGPT’s great for quick facts or recipe hacks, but as a replacement for a therapist or life coach? 👀This week, I did a little experiment. I talked back and forth with Chat about a (completely fabricated) emotional problem.Chat validated me up and down the wazoo, yessed me to pieces, told me I was 100% valid, totally in the rightSure. Chat is always available, free and (annoyingly) perky but Chat is programmed to validate, affirm and agree with you. Chat is a total people pleaser-keeping you engaged. On the hook. Dependent.Chat just tells you what you want to hear. Chat will not challenge you. Chat will not call you on your BS Chat will not provide an alternate point of view. Chat can't guide you through life because chat has no LIVED EXPERIENCE. If you don't actually want to be challenged, if all you're seeking is affirmation, then Chat is for you. See you in a year. The Maiden, Mother, and Crone archetypes traditionally represent the cyclical nature of life, encompassing youth, motherhood, and old age/death, respectively. As I have been aging, reflecting and mining my own life, I have come to a conclusion that there is actually a fourth phase, nestled between the Mother and The Crone that I prefer to call The Empress. She is us, women in midlife. The Maiden: is our youth, innocence, inexperience, untapped potential, our playfulness, sense of adventure, desire for new beginnings, and the potential for growth. The Mother: is where we nurture, our fertility, our sense of abundance, and the fullness of life, if you don't have children it's our creative ventures and the building block time of life  The Empress: invites us to pause, discern, take stock, take back our power, process, and reinvent   The Crone: is where we step into our wisdom, pass on our experience, face endings, and seed the renewal of the Maiden At each phase, we carry the other three as we are always cycling through-no matter what age you actually are today. Each stage has wounds to heal and gifts to give us. I'll be launching a coaching program around this concept later in 2025. I'm heavier than I'm used to being and heavier than I think of myself in my head right now. Kate Valentine (playwright/producer/choreographer/actor) is one of the instigators of the feminist neo-burlesque movement. Her show, the vaudeville extravaganza The Va Va Voom Room and her hilariously deadpan mistress of ceremonies character Miss Astrid rode a zeitgeist beginning in the mid 1990’s in Los Angeles. The popularity of The Va Va Voom Room hit its apex as a weekly variety show featuring hundreds of noted striptease dancers, musicians, and variety artists running at the beloved cabaret space Fez Under Time Café in NYC. Now, as most of us Gen X-ers, Kate has entered midlife and is refusing to be quiet about it. I was never one of those women who actively said "No kids for me". I was also not one of those little girls who played house and wanted to be a Mommy when I grew up. I was pretty surprised when a wave of grief about being 53 without my own nuclear family popped up after the death of my father. I think a lot of GenX and younger women are aging without children or a traditional relationship. Jane Boon is an adventurer at heart and a technologist by training. She is fascinated by how things work and why things happen. Perimenopause is the gateway. It's a portal. It's the portal between your old self and your new self.And you have to walk through fire to get there.  It's a transformation. There's a reason why they call it "the change". Because it changes you in every way. Spiritually. Emotionally,  physically,  intellectually. It's a total repurposing of your soul. I have been massively transformed in the last decade. I don't see anything the same way that I did in my 30s. I don't look the same. I don't feel the same and I don't act the same.  Perimenopause will transform you from the inside out. You have to walk through fire to get through the initiation. But what's on the other side is worth it. When you get to "a certain age" you may be startled when you see yourself in the mirror. One of the things there is so little discussion around is the overall strangeness of aging-and how sometimes your sense of self gets pulled out from under you. More often than not, when I see myself these days, I have a little startle. Is that me ? Me with the crowfeet ? The furrowed brow ? The under eye bags ? The spare tire ? That old lady couldn't possible be ME ? When did this happen ? It takes a lot of work and a mindset shift to accept our bodies as they inevitably change-no amount of diet/exercise/good habits/injectables or plastic surgery can stop the mark of time. So it's time to accept. When I was 38 years old, already pressured by "time" I took it upon myself to take up burlesque despite the fact that I was well into my more traditional career. It was an adventure to be sure, but it also taught me a lot about agism - including my own. It's not a fun thing to think about-but we need to. What would happen if you suddenly got ill  ? Did you have a Power of Attorney ? A Medical Proxy ? A Will ? A plan ? Or if you died today would you leave a mess behind for your loved ones to address ? I admit-I'm 53, I had cancer, I was in a very serious car crash last year and I STILL don't have a will.
