Have you ever felt left out, bullied, or treated as a "other"? Most of us probably have at some point in our lives, but the feeling of being othered is out of control these days. Our politics, our economics, our culture is divided into the innies and outies,  but belonging is a deep human need. Matthew Cahill is here today with us, he is the president and CEO of the Percipio Company, and spends a lot of time thinking and talking about how to make inclusive work and community spaces.  Because who among us could survive on the planet without the help and support of other people?  We're going to talk today about what we need to do to be more inclusive, where to find our tribe, and how to do all of that while avoiding the very prevalent dark sides of belonging.  Produced by Liam Donaldson Hosted by Jennifer Dhillon Music by Jogging Turtle

Grief, Art, and the Death Industry

This is the Bounce Back Generation podcast. Today we're going to speak with Susan Oppie. **Trigger warning ** This podcast subject today is about death and dying and the grieving process that we go through when a loved one is gone. Susan is an advocate for bringing back the ancient traditions of honoring our deceased loved ones through ritual and providing after death care to our dead. She believes that such reconnections with our final rite of passage Are not only are inalienable rights as human beings, but can also benefit the grieving process in beautiful healing and even transformative ways. She's the founder of One Washcloth, a nonprofit dedicated to guiding people through the experience of death and dying of a loved one. Interested in how the diorama project turned out? Will We Ever Feel Safe?

We are talking today about a need we all have. It’s something our brain was built to be aware of and in so many ways our behavior is shaped by it: It’s the need to feel safe and protected.   Our guest Jim Dudley is someone who took a pledge to protect us. Jim is a former Deputy Chief of police for the San Francisco Police dept and is now a professor of criminology at San Francisco State University. Suffice it to say, that our feelings about policing may vary. Do police keep us safe, or make us feel unsafe? It’s a question for our times and I wanted to speak with Jim because he’s given a lot of thought to these issues as a former cop, and professor. I urge you to listen also to his podcast called Policing Matters where he delves into questions about policing and the community. Did you know that stress, like the stress of the pandemic, stresses around our finances, worries we have for our children, our health, safety, our political fears — all of these elements can affect our ability to think and problem-solve? They affect our emotional states and our long-term physical health. This is a fundamental neuroscience principle about how stress and trauma impact us. And feeling protected is a primary driver of our behavior. That’s why we say Protection is the first building block to build resilience. Public Housing Moms talk about Stressed Kids and How They Build Resilience

Today we are going to talk with Petra and Angelica. Before we became Bounce Back Generation we were known as Healthy Genreations Project. We operated as a nonprofit in a public housing site in San Francisco providing services to children and families.  The neighborhood was not friendly for kids. Some of the kids would experience awful things before school, and we will talk about some of that…Petra and Angelica were Peer Community health leaders with Healthy Generations Project and were part of a group of parents and grandparents who would walk about 20 to 25 kids in the morning to school on our Walking School Bus. A goal of our programs was to reduce stress levels for parents by helping get their kids to school safely and on time, because a less stressed parent is more available both in time and emotional bandwidth to focus on their relationship with themselves and their children. The Walking School Bus was also a way to establish close relationships between the kids and the Community Health Leaders.  It was doing this work that Angelica and Petra met. The walking school bus focused on 6 things that we call the Building Blocks for Resilience: It was safe environment. The kids were able to have a supportive adult on their side every morning. The kids learned coping skills like self calming exercises so they were ready to learn when they got to school. The Walking School Bus parents and grandparents also helped boost the confidence levels for the kids, they made them feel part of something special as a School Bus member, and finally they gave the children a listening ear to hear their stories. So that’s the 6 Building Blocks: Protection, Relationships, Coping Skills, Confidence, Belonging, and Storytelling. Final thing to set things up as you hear about their experiences doing the Walking School Bus every school day and summer school day for over 6 years - yes there are coyotes roaming the streets of San Francisco in the mornings. You’ll hear about Sassy. Sassy is Petra’s beloved chihuahua and Petra and Angelica met on the school bus and became the most unlikely of friends, as they will explain.  Hosted by Jennifer Dhillon Produced by Liam Donaldson Music by Jogging Turtle  Petra's Bounce Back Story - A Call to Change | Bounce Back Generation Angelica’s Tostada Recipe  Want to learn more? Storytelling w/ Lil Rece and Kelz

Mental health is a community endeavor. Our guests today talk about the value of telling your story and finding the audience to hear it, because in talking about "what happened to me" we own the story and are free to frame it in ways that reveal our powers of resilience. Bounce Back Generation is a youth-centered nonprofit that creates and shares tools that build emotional resilience. We all have a role to play in constructing good mental health environments where we can learn about ourselves, help one another, and heal the planet. We seek to uplift the perspectives of the historically oppressed and anyone fighting for equality and justice. With respect for science and the wisdom of our elders, the Bounce Back Generation podcast explores resilience, overcoming trauma, and the science behind personal growth.  Lil Rece (@lilrece6167) is an LA-based hip hop producer originally from the San Francisco Bay area working with artist Brent Faiyaz among others and Kelz is the creative force behind the YouTube channel Tails of a Black Girl (@shankelm.5470) Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bouncebackgeneration/ Follow Lil Rece on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lilrece/ Follow Kelz on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tailsofablackgirl For more click here: linktr.ee/bouncebackgeneration BBG Podcast Hosted by Jennifer Dhillon Producer & Sound Engineering - Liam Donaldson Guests - Shankel McNeal & Lil Rece

    What's Behind Our Collective Anger?

Anger is all around us. We see manifestations of anger and rage being played out on TV on YouTube, and social media. Or maybe you saw it on the road you’re driving on listening to this podcast? There seems to be a pull towards being angry and we’re feeling it.  Today we are doing something different. Joining us are some of our staff members. We are called Bounce Back Generation, with an emphasis on the generations part because our staff is mostly made up of young people. They are learning about the science of trauma, personal growth, and emotional resilience, and most of our content and tools are created by them. We are lucky to have older generations of experts who work with us and one such expert is Whitney Green a licensed therapist who counsels teens. She presented us with some deep insights about anger. Did you know that anger is a secondary emotion? It’s there to cover another emotion, one that may be too vulnerable to reveal.  Our staff participants are Elijah, Nasser, Liam, Paloma, and Shankel who you also heard from at the top of the show. If you are a young person you might see yourself in some of the expressions of anger we are going to talk about. If you’re an adult, a parent, or anyone who works with young people you might get some insight into how youth are having to process the anger that is pervasive in our culture.
