E58- Ideal Support for Husband and Wife Navigating Betrayal Trauma w/ Casey Allison

Send us Fan MailSteve O’Connor hosts special guest Casey Allison, founder of Come Awake Coaching and Consulting.  Casey is a Master Certified Coach through ICF, an APSATS-certified Partner Coach, a Certified Disclosure Guide through Kintsugi Recovery Partners, a PSAP through IITAP, and a Brainspotting practitioner. She also has training in the perinatal period with betrayed women, and additional training to support partners of sex addicts who have criminally sexually offended, whether they’ve been charged or not. She holds many other trainings and certifications as well.Casey shares how discovering her husband’s secret sexual life led her, after years of ineffective help and multiple practitioners, to find betrayal-trauma-informed support and eventually serve women navigating betrayal, pregnancy/new motherhood, and cases involving sexual offending. They discuss how uninformed resources can harm partners by blaming them, and share indicators of good support: prioritizing safety and stabilization, validating grief and anger, and aiming for post-traumatic growth rather than “going back.” They emphasize the importance of truth and a collaborative Full Disclosure, including the Partner Impact Statement and Emotional Restitution letter, to restore mutuality, reduce shame, and foster empathy. Casey shares about her Catholic women’s Facebook group and her coaching groups, and offers hope that healing is possible. E56- Catholic ASAT-C Joshua Urrutia | Facing the Self: Overcoming Shame and Intimacy Disorder

Send us Fan MailWhat happens when the very thing you're most ashamed of is also the thing keeping you from the love you most desperately need? In this episode, we sit down with Joshua Urrutia, MS, LPC-Associate and ASAT Candidate, to talk about one of the most painful paradoxes at the heart of sexual addiction: the war between deep shame and the longing to be truly known, seen and loved. At the root of that war, more often than not, is an attachment wound that has never been named, never been healed, and has been quietly running the show for years.Joshua brings both clinical expertise and personal experience to this conversation. He shares what he witnessed during his time in ministry and mission work, and how those experiences led him to specialize in compulsive sexual behavior. This is an honest, grounded, and hope-filled conversation for anyone in recovery, anyone loving someone in recovery, or anyone who has ever felt too broken to be seen.In this episode we cover:Joshua's personal journey and why he became a Certified Sex Addiction TherapistWhat intimacy disorder actually means and what it looks like in real lifeHow early attachment wounds and attachment injuries lay the groundwork for compulsive sexual behavior later in lifeThe painful cycle of shame, hiding, and compulsive behavior and why it is really a distorted scream for connectionWhy healing requires the opposite and what you can do to start healingA note on attachment: You may hear the terms attachment theory and attachment injury in this conversation. Attachment theory, developed by psychiatrist John Bowlby, describes the deep human need for safe, reliable emotional bonds. First with caregivers, and later in adult relationships. When those bonds are broken, neglected, or never formed, an attachment injury occurs a: wound in the person's ability to trust, connect, and feel safe being truly known by another. For many men and women struggling with sexual addiction, compulsive behavior is not primarily about sex. It is about an unmet, often unconscious need for closeness and comfort that was rarely safely available. And for the betrayed spouse, the discovery of her partner's secret life is one of the most devastating attachment injuries an adult can experience: a rupture at the deepest level of relational trust.About Joshua: Joshua Urrutia is a Licensed Professional Associate Counselor and ASAT Candidate (on his way to a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) with Intuitus Group in the Austin area in Texas. He holds a Master's in Counseling from Divine Mercy University, is EMDR trained. 🌐 Website: intuitus-group.com 📞 Phone: (512) 650-8018 📧 Email: [email protected] LINKS:-Join an amazing group of men in the Finally Free Group here.-Get daily, uplifting CFP BOOST Texts by texting SUPPORT to (941) 279-2337 or here.-For 30 days Free of Covenant Eyes, sign up at:  https://www.covenanteyes.comPROMO CODE: CFP-Get a safe, locked-down phone - a Wisephone!  Use Promo Code: CFP to save $25 - https://www.techless.com/CFP-Book an INTRO Call with Steve here.-Email: [email protected] up for the email newsletter at the website-Donate to CFP

E55- Understanding Process Addiction: Why How You Cope Matters as Much as What You Use

Send us Fan MailIn This Episode: Steve breaks down what process addiction actually is, why understanding it matters so much, 7 common mistakes that keep people stuck, and the tools that actually work including one most people completely underestimate. What's covered:What process addiction is and how it's different from what most people think addiction meansThe neuroscience behind why behaviors can be just as addictive as substancesWhy "just stop" has never worked and the leaky roof and bucket that explains it perfectly7 common mistakes people make in recoveryThe tools that create real, lasting changeWhy processing your emotions isn't optional and what happens when you don'tThe 7 Mistakes We CoverWhite-knuckling it aloneRemoving the behavior without replacing the functionNot addressing the underlying issuesAll-or-nothing thinking after a slipFocusing only on stopping, not building a life worth livingNot getting professional help when you need itNot building your support network before you need itThe Tools We CoverPhone calls — daily, multiple times a day, before crisis hitsJournaling — finding patterns, slowing the urge cycle, writing through triggers in real timePhysical movement — releasing what the body is holdingMindfulness/Present Moment/Awareness — learning to float through a wave without being destroyed by itTherapy/Coaching — translating what's underground into something you can actually work withCreative outlets — the healing power of creation vs. consumptionRoutine and structure — and the BLAST principleOpposite action — doing the counterintuitive thing that actually pulls you outKey TakeawaysProcess addiction is real. It is not a character flaw or a willpower problem. It follows the same neural pathways as substance addiction. The behavior is a signal. E42- Breaking Through Denial for a Better Life of Freedom and Integrity

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of "Breaking Through Denial for a Better Life of Freedom and Integrity," we dive deep into the insidious nature of denial, that powerful internal whisper that keeps us from facing uncomfortable truths about ourselves and our lives. We explore how denial acts as an "illness of escape," shielding us from pain while simultaneously trapping us in a cycle of unmanageability. We uncover 8 common forms of denial with the rational, internal dialogue and consequences, from minimization ("It's not that bad") and rationalization ("I have a good reason for this") to comparison ("I'm not as bad as...") and the deceptive "one more time" syndrome. Understanding these voices is the first step to silencing them. Most importantly, we illuminate 20 ways on how denial profoundly violates our Catholic morals and values. It stands in stark opposition to the core tenets of truth, honesty, charity, prudence, and humility, severing our genuine connection with God and others. We look at the ways denial affects ourselves and those closest to us.  We draw upon powerful Bible verses (including Psalm 51, Proverbs 28:13, 1 John 1:8-10, James 1: 22-24, Luke 8:17 and more) and wisdom from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Saints to underscore the spiritual imperative of embracing truth. We also find profound inspiration in the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia. His radical commitment to confronting temptation—famously throwing himself into a thorny bush to overcome lust—and his establishment of monastic life rooted in humility, obedience, and community, offer a powerful blueprint for breaking through denial and living a life of authentic holiness. His life beautifully illustrates the first step of recovery: admitting powerlessness, not as weakness, but as the gateway to God's all-sufficient grace.Join us as we begin this journey of uncovering the truth, embracing vulnerability, and stepping into the profound freedom and wholeness that God desires for us.Reflection Question: Related to lustful behavior, where might you be resisting a difficult truth?Action Step: Pray Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Journal your reflections.CFP HELPFUL LINKS:-Get daily, uplifting CFP BOOST Texts for the journey by texting SUPPORT to (941) 279-2337-For 30 days Free of Covenant Eyes, sign up at:  https://www.covenanteyes.comPROMO CODE: CFP-Get a sweet, safe, locked-down phone [that's not a flip phone] - Get a Wisephone!  Use Promo Code: CFP to save $25 -- https://www.techless.com/CFP-Join the Finally Free Coaching Group: https://www.catholicsfightporn.com/need-help-Book a Complimentary, Confidential Call with Steve: https://www.catholicsfightporn.com/contact-Email: [email protected] with me on Instagram @catholicrecovery-Steve and a betrayed partner coach guide couples through the Full Disclosure process for those looking for full truth in their relationship.  Email Steve for more info.

E40- Why We Act Out – A Catholic Path to Understanding the Roots of Problematic Sexual Behavior

Send us Fan MailThis episode tackles the profound question: "Why?  Why do I keep doing this?  Why can't I stop?" We dive deep into the roots of problematic sexual behavior, moving beyond shame to understand the complex interplay of factors that drive us.   There are 7 "Why's" outlined to help you learn that these struggles often stem from misdirected natural instincts, emotional dysregulation and unmet human needs, rather than just a simple "lack of willpower."We explore the brain's reward system and how behaviors can "hijack" the brain, creating powerful cravings that make breaking free incredibly difficult. Discover how early wounds and traumas, along with the pervasive influence of modern culture, contribute to these patterns. Drawing from Catholic wisdom, we frame this battle within the context of concupiscence—our wounded human nature inclined to do evil —and the constant call to spiritual battle.Ultimately, this episode is an invitation to humble, prayerful introspection, guiding you to identify your own "whys" with the help of God's grace. It's the essential first step towards reclaiming your freedom and pursuing a life of authentic purity and joy in Christ.  Enjoy and please consider sharing with someone you know that can benefit.  Reviews help too!HELPFUL LINKS--Get daily, uplifting CFP BOOST Texts for the journey by texting SUPPORT to (941) 279-2337-For 30 days Free of Covenant Eyes, sign up at:  https://www.covenanteyes.comPROMO CODE: CFP-Get a sweet, safe, locked-down phone [that's not a flip phone] - Get a Wisephone!

Set a designated daily time and place for the check in. Try to choose a time when you will be uninterrupted and not too tired, be consistent.2. It is ALWAYS the recovering addict’s responsibility to initiate this check-in. Plan ahead by giving yourself a few minutes to think about what you will share, as preparation can greatly enhance the experience by making it more thoughtful and meaningful.3. Decide whether the addict or partner will share first. The first person will share his or her complete check in. Then the second person will share his or her complete check-in.4. While each shares his or her check in, the other should try to use talking and listening boundaries if they respond. 5. Remember this process involves two traumatized (newly healing) people being vulnerable. Be gentle with yourselves and take a break before you come back to discuss any triggering content in greater detail.SAFER check-in From Jake Porter NCC,CSAT,CMAT,CPC and Daring Ventures 2016
