A Fatal Romance- How Betty Lou Became America's Notorious Black Widow
Betty, a high school dropout who left school in the 10th grade, spent the majority of her life employed as a cashier and waitress. Throughout her life, she entered into five marriages. She had killed her husband, a firefighter, in order to obtain his life insurance benefits amounting to $100,000 and his pension. His remains were found in a wishing well on their property, which was adorned with a flower garden. Additionally, police uncovered the skeletal remains of her fourth husband, Doyle Wayne Baker, buried beneath a storage shed on the premises. Baker had also been shot, and his disappearance had remained a mystery until the investigation into her fifth husband led to the search of her property. She became known as the "Killer Granny."Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Justice for the Fallen:The Case of the Cox Technician Slaying
This incident is a tragic occurrence involving a cable installer who was shot multiple times during what seems to be an attempted robbery. The behavior of the assailant indicates a possible lack of experience or sound judgment, suggesting that the crime may have been driven by panic or executed poorly. The shooting took place shortly after the victim commenced his work at approximately 12:30 pm, with law enforcement being alerted just before at 12:19 pm. This timing underscores that the event transpired in a public setting, likely in the presence of witnesses. It is possible that the nearby work truck was the intended target for theft, and the perpetrator may have misled the victim into a false sense of security prior to the outbreak of violence. Despite the severity of the situation, there are still numerous investigative paths that could provide clarity on the case.Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Heartstrings and Crime Scenes The Secrets Behind Cold Case Couple- Part Two
On October 4, 2004, the lifeless and partially clothed body of nineteen-year-old Courtney Coco was discovered in a derelict building along Farm to Market Road 1406, close to Interstate 10 in Winnie, Texas. Originally from Alexandria, Louisiana, Courtney was last seen alive around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004. Despite various leads emerging during the investigation, the case eventually went cold. It wasn't until fifteen years later that authorities arrested a suspect—who had been engaged to Courtney's sister in 2004—for her murder. The trial ensued and a jury in Rapides Parish reached a unanimous verdict.Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. It wasn’t easy being Anne Plue Gates’ husband. In fact, in two out of three cases, it was deadly. The murder charges brought against a woman in connection with the fatal beating of her estranged second husband have piqued the interest of a law enforcement officer from Indiana, who previously investigated the death of her first husband. Deputies said Mrs. Gates, who had been living with her parents in Picayune, Mississippi, was the beneficiary of her husband’s $82,000 life insurance policy. Anne Gates will be eternally recognized in Louisiana as the Black Widow of New Orleans. Join us to witness her sentencing and observe the court's approach to this case.Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Aiming High- The Legacy of the Howard Johnson's Sniper-Episode 48
Mark James Robert Essex (August 12, 1949 – January 7, 1973) was an American serial sniper and black nationalist known as the "New Orleans Sniper" who killed a total of nine people, including five police officers, and wounded twelve others, in two separate attacks in New Orleans on December 31, 1972, and January 7, 1973. Essex was killed by police in the second armed confrontation.Essex is believed to have specifically sought to kill white people and police officers due to racism he had previously experienced while enlisted in the Navy. His increasingly extremist anti-police, black supremacist, and anti-white views are believed to have solidified following a November 1972 violent clash between Baton Rouge sheriff's deputies and student civil rights demonstrators, during which two young black demonstrators were shot and killed.Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Exonerating the Underdog The Journey With Patrick Brown-Episode 47
Patrick Brown, a 49-year-old man from Louisiana, walked free after spending nearly 30 years in prison for a rape that the victim herself has consistently maintained he did not commit. According to Orleans Parish prosecutors, Brown was convicted of aggravated rape in 1994, accused of assaulting his 6-year-old stepdaughter. The case of Patrick Brown, falsely accused of rape in Louisiana, requires a thorough investigation through a deductive approach. The legal context in Louisiana regarding consent and societal perceptions was also considered. Ultimately, uncovering the truth relies on a comprehensive examination of all. Secrets of the Butterfly Man Leave Maggie Mae in Shadows-Episode 29
Daniel Bryan “Bunce” Napier known as the "Butterfly Man," murdered a 15-year-old girl in Shreveport in 1934. He was part of a crowd in Georgia that in 1915 had lynched Leo Frank in connection with the similar killing of a girl named Mary Phagan. Some writers have speculated that Napier was Phagan's killer as well. He also used the name "Fred Lockhart" and this is how he was largely referred to in the papers of the day. The state of Louisiana has death certificates with both names. The Shreveport city sexton's record uses the Napier ID.Sources:https://www.ktbs.com/news/arklatex-indepth/the-butterfly-man-1934-crime-that-stunned-shreveport/article_c92f1f5c-2577-11ed-bcea-3f32f9f9430a.htmlhttps://www.criminallyintrigued.com/blog/2018/8/10/the-butterfly-murderhttps://www.shreveporttimes.com/story/news/crime/2016/06/24/man-recounts-witnessing-last-hanging-shreveport/85811916/Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Footage from the bar subsequently seen by investigators reportedly shows an intoxicated Brooks falling over several times, stumbling and struggling to stand in front of at least one of the suspects before they left the bar together. It was at this point that she was allegedly sexually assaulted in the back seat of their car by two of the group before they dropped her off near the Pelican Lakes subdivision off Burbank Drive around 3am on a dark road, at which point she appears to have been struck by accident by a ride-share driver. * If you or someone you know is a victim of stalking, please reach out to the VictimConnect Resource Center at 1-855-484-2846, or you can chat online at victimconnect.org. - You can also contact the following resources: * The National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 * RAINN’s National Sexual Abuse Hotline: 1-800-656-4673- Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Sinister Secrets of the Bayou Strangler-Part 3-Episode 22
Ronald Joseph Dominique, also known as The Bayou Strangler, he was an American serial killer and rapist who murdered at least 23 men and boys in the state of Louisiana between 1997 and 2006. Dominique's victims tended to be teenagers and men aged between 16 and 46, but not all of them were homosexual. Most of the victims were African-American. He often met them during walks or drives in his pickup truck, as well as in gay bars, luring them with offers of alcohol, drugs, housing, or group sex with his supposed girlfriend. After successfully convincing potential victims, Dominique would lure them to his trailer where he would overpower them, bind them, and subsequently rape them. According to the investigators, Dominique then strangled them, loaded their bodies into the back of his truck, and dumped them in remote rural areas in one of six nearby parishes.Victim 1: David Mitchell age: 19 Found: July 1997 in St. Charles ParishVictim 2: Gary Pierre age: 20 Found: December 1997 in St. Charles ParishVictim 3: Larry Ranson age: 38 Found: July 31, 1998 in St. Charles ParishVictim 4: Oliver LeBanks age: 27 Found: October 1998 in Metairie, Jefferson ParishVictim 5: Joseph Brown age: 16 Found: October 1998 in Kenner, Jefferson ParishVictim 6: Bruce Williams age: 18 Found: November 1998 in Jefferson ParishVictim 7: Manuel Reed age: 21 Found: May 1999 in Kenner, Jefferson ParishVictim 8: Angel Mejia age: 34 Found: June 1999 in Kenner, Jefferson ParishVictim 9: Mitchell Johnson age: 34 Found: August 1999 in Metairie, Jefferson ParishVictim 10: Michael Vincent age: 23 Found: January 2000 in Lafourche ParishVictim 11: Kenneth Randolph, Jr. age: 20 Found: October 2002 in Lafourche ParishVictim 12: Anoka Jones age: 26 Found: October 12, 2002 in Houma, Terrebonne ParishVictim 13: Datrell Woods age: 19 Found: May 24, 2003 in Bayou Blue, Terrebonne ParishVictim 14: Larry Matthews age: 46 Found: October 2004 in Bayou Blue, Terrebonne ParishVictim 15: Michael Barnett age: 21 Found: October 24, 2004 in Bayou Blue, Terrebonne ParishVictim 16: Leon Lirette age: 22 Found: February 2005 in Bayou Blue, Terrebonne ParishVictim 17: August Watkins age: 31 Found: April 2005 in Lafourche ParishVictim 18: Kurt Cunningham age: 23 Found: April 2005 in Lafourche ParishVictim 19: Alonzo Hogan age: 28 Found: July 2005 in St. Charles ParishVictim 20: Wayne Smith age: 17 Found: August 2005 in Terrebonne ParishVictim 21: Chris Deville age: 40 Found: September 2005 in Assumption ParishVictim 22: Nicholas Pellegrin age: 21 Found: November 2005 in Lafourche ParishVictim 23: Christopher Sutterfield age: 27 Found: October 2006 in Iberville ParishCopyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Delphine LaLaurie's Dark Legacy of Torment Unveiled-Episode 19
The haunted history of the LaLaurie Mansion is one of the best known stories of haunted tours in the City of New Orleans, Louisiana. It tells a story of the brutal excess use of slavery in a horrific and horrible state for several generations. This story has backdated to up to 150 years and is considered the most haunted location in the French Quarter.Marie Delphine Macarty or MacCarthy (March 19, 1787 – December 7, 1849), more commonly known as Madame Blanque or, after her third marriage, as Madame LaLaurie, was a New Orleans socialite and serial killer who was believed to have tortured and murdered slaves in her household.Sources:- Morrow Long, Carolyn (2012). https://books.google.com/books?id=2NAQYAAACAAJ&q=madame+lalaurie+Mistress+of+the+Haunted+House. Ice-Cooled Horror: Tragic Truth Behind the Locked Chest-Episode 11
The St. Tammany Parish coroner verifies the identity of the elderly man whose remains were found stuffed inside an ice chest in a Slidell-area apartment on Tuesday night through DNA. The man, who investigators believe was born in 1928, was left in a 160-quart cooler kept in his daughter's residence on the 100 block of South Military Road. The man, Charles Fisher has been positively identified and apparently born in 1928, may have been dead for months or even years before his 58-year-old daughter and her roommate reported his death. Even worse is what they have done to his body prior to it being found. Join me in covering this case in the most bizarre circumstances to find out the motive behind this.Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. Unthinkable Betrayal: Louisiana Airman's Life Cut Short-Episode 10
In the early morning hours of March 27, 2018 a melee ensued when the two Airmen were alone in their room. After completing his shift Isiah Edwards went to the dorm room he shared with Bradley Hale, then left to bring back food for them both. When he returned, he flipped open his knife. Edwards made a joke about using it to rob the restaurant where he had gotten the food before putting down the knife next to Hale’s chair and going to bed. Edwards woke up when he felt Hale’s hand on his buttocks, and then saw his roommate walk towards and enter the bathroom. Isiah explained that they had no arguments, fights or problems of any kind before falling asleep, but the touching made him “really pissed off.” While his roommate was in the bathroom, Edwards stated he sat up in his bed and “was just sort of fuming a bit.” He got out of bed and stood in a corner of the room by the switch for the overhead light. After Bradley went back to bed, Isiah flipped on the light, stood next to his roommate, “and told him to get up.”Copyright © 2024-Present Criminalist Behavior Podcast. From Romance to Ransom: A Marriage Twist Gone Wrong-Episode 9
Handley and Schanda married in 2006. It's unclear why their marriage fell apart but in 2017, multiple restraining orders were filed involving both of them and as his marriage deteriorated, he started using drugs.Schanda Handley and her daughter Isabella Cumberland were at their home on a quiet street in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Aug. 6, 2017, when two men appeared at their front door. At first glance they looked like deliverymen, which was a welcome interruption, since Handley had been anxiously awaiting a clothes steamer she had ordered. Her joy was transformed into terror, when instead of dropping off a package, the two men held Handley at gunpoint with semi-automatic handguns, handcuffed her and threw her into the back of a van.Disclaimer:This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, health, or professional advice.
