We discuss if cockers are the Land Rovers of the canine world, why they're unvalued in shooting compared to a peg dog - and yet need far more training, and why Nick doesn't pick up anymore. Nick also shares his thoughts on dogs vs. bitches, how many dogs are the right amount of dogs, and why rough shooting is more akin to hunting. From Roman and post-Roman Britain and the Byzantine Middle East to the Archeology of early Christian Israel, Ken is a global expert on all these matters.  In his most recent book, The Archaeology of Jesus’s Nazareth, Ken puts forward a popular account of what the town of Nazareth would have been like in the time of Jesus. He asks if Jesus was really a carpenter, or if it is a mistranslation. Ken discovered what many believe was Jesus’s childhood home, but was it?  We also discuss if the Empress Helena actually found the Cross, what was we learn from Jesus’s youth, the Christian Pilgrimage, why Nazareth was so different to it’s surrounding areas in that time, if the lack of certainty frustrates Ken, and why we still use BC/ AD given that most of the archaeology work undertaken is secular.  All that, and so much more. Ep. 62 - Justin Brierley - Is There A Surprising Rebirth In The Belief In God?

Justin Brierley is an author and presenter who, for 17 years, hosted the show "Unbelievable?" which brought prominent atheists and Christians together for conversations and debates on all aspects of the Christian faith. Under Justin’s tenure, the show reached millions on a yearly basis and featured names such as Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, John Lennox, William Lane-Craig, Alex O’Connor, Douglas Murray, Tom Holland, and many more. In this conversation, we discuss Justin’s new book, “The Surprising Re-Birth In The Belief In God,”  and his new podcast series under the same name. We talk about the sliding scale of faith and whilst many may see the merits in the story of the Bible, it’s a far way from accepting it. Kierkegaard and Pascal are referenced in their intellectual wrestling with the scriptures and what we can learn from them. We also discuss the issue of head vs. heart when approaching the problem of God, the potential origins of Islam, the burden of intellect, and whether Richard Dawkins is right in diagnosing Anglicanism. Ep. 61 - Harry Donoghue - An Introduction To Virgil's Aeneid: Ancient Rome's Best Known Epic

Harry Donoghue is an Oxford graduate, online creator, and educator. The Aeneid by Virgil is one of antiquity's best-known works. Considered to be the follow-on from Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, the poem charts the story of Aeneas, a Trojan prince who flees the destruction of Troy and finds the first settlement in Italy, which later became Rome. But why has it stood the test of time? Why should we bother studying it? Who is Virgil and what is his background? Did he steal from Homer? How does the Aeneid echo down the ages? Can we not discard it as 2000-year-old propaganda? In this episode, we answer all those questions and so many more. After this conversation, you'll be equipped to read the Aeneid for yourself with all the required context and witness firsthand why this text has stood the test of time. Ep. 52 - Matt Stephens - The Man Behind The Microphone

Matt Stephens is an ex-professional cyclist and GCN presenter who now commentates and presents for Eurosport, Sigma Sports, Zwift and many other outlets. We’ve all indirectly spent hours in Matt’s company through his work at GCN and Eurosport, and so I wanted to get a flavour of the man behind the microphone. We ended up having a broad-ranging conversation including some cycling topics, and some non-cycling topics such as language, art, reverence, and culture.  Matt gives an insight into his time in the police and how that helps him host conversations with the biggest names in cycling, what makes a bad interview and how he aims to bring the humanity of the riders to the fore, his use of emotion and language in the commentary box, how the history of art helps him as a presenter, the early days of GCN and why he moved on, and so much more.  There is a depth to Matt that I - and now you - get to enjoy, and it was a real pleasure to have an hour of Matt’s time. I don’t think there are many podcasts in the world where Mark Cavendish and Francis Bacon are both mentioned, but that’s the way we roll on the Joe Reilly Podcast.  If you’re new here, consider subscribing and leaving a 5-star review as it enables me to bring you more conversations like this. Why did he think the French Revolution destroyed the fabric of good society? Why was he in favour of the aristocracy? What did he mean when discussing the “little platoons” of society? Why his work and legacy have been misappropriated by Liberals and Conservatives alike? What does Burke mean when he says we are living the tradition of the dead and the unborn? Ep. 49 - Ioannes Chountis de Fabbri - House of Lords Advisor & Lord Byron Biographer

Ioannes Chountis de Fabbri is an academic, House of Lords advisor, biographer of Lord Byron, has three master's degrees and is currently completing a PhD in Intellectual History specialising in Eighteenth-Century history of political ideas. And that is just scratching the surface.  Ioannes was fascinating to talk to and he gives a real insight into the work which goes on in the House of Lords. In this episode, he provides a thorough and concise history of the British upper Chamber from its conception to the modern day, with all of the reforms and changes that have occurred. He also talks about the potential reform in the House of Lords under the new government and what would actually happen, amongst many other stories and anecdotes.  Lord Byron is a name which conjured up a host of emotions in his fans, foes, and readers, and his works and personal life have been subject to many books, columns and debates. Ionnes biography instead focusses on Lord Byron's political side and views. He was a Whig grandee, but his speeches and support were more radical, but where were they actually? Was Byron actually a big hippocrite like his political hero Charles James Fox? Ionnes discusses whether he would have really been attracted by Marx and his message, or would he have actually broken free from the shackles of romanticism and radicalism, and become a staunch Victorian Peer? Given that he died aged 36, we shall never know, but Ionnes presents a fascinating case.  Find Ionnes on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ioannes___/?hl=en Find Ionnes on X: https://x.com/IChountis?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Find me on Instagram: www.instagram.com/joe.reilly/?hl=en Watch the episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JoeReillyPodcast  Listen to the episode on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/joe-reilly-podcast/id1701779589

Why the term classical music should be banned? The history behind the Jerusalem hymn, and why we’re all singing God Save The Queen AND Happy Birthday wrong, and how to sing it correctly. Ep. 37 - Thomas Wunderlich - What It's Like To Be A Cliff Diver

Thomas Wunderlich is a cliff diver and self-described "send addict". Cliff diving is a sport which just stops you in your tracks, especially when you see videos like Thomas’s which are over 30m off bridges. But contrary to what you think when initially seeing these jumps, you’ll learn in the episode that it’s all very calculated and safe - there is months, and at times years behind these jumps with endless visualisation and safety checks.  In this episode we discuss a host of themes about cliff diving:  the process behind finding a place to jump  Why they throw a rock before jumping  How Thomas gets in the zone before a big jump  How freestyle differs from the Red Bill Cliff Divers And I ask about Thomas’s two most famous jumps: one off a 33m bridge into a river, and the other in the middle of a shopping mall.  It’s a really fun episode, and I hope it does its part in explaining the process behind the antics which we see online.  Find Thomas on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/senddicted/?next=%2Flucalar%2F&hl=fr Find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joe.reilly/?hl=en
