Episode 118: When You're Tired in a Way Rest Doesn't Fix (Leadership that Doesn't Lose You Series)

Hey, Friend! Have you ever felt tired… and realized that rest wasn’t fixing it? You sleep. You take a break. You try to slow down. And still… something feels off. That’s because not all exhaustion is the same. Sometimes what you’re feeling isn’t just tiredness. It’s depletion. In this week’s episode, I talk about the difference—and how to begin moving toward real restoration instead of just temporary relief. If this has been true for you, I hope this conversation helps you feel seen… and gives you a way forward. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 117: Leadership can be Lonely (Leadership that Doesn't Lose You Series)

Hey, Friend! There’s a part of leadership that doesn’t get talked about very often. It’s not visible. It’s not always obvious. But it’s real. You can be surrounded by people… and still feel alone. Not because you don’t have relationships— but because you’re carrying things others don’t fully see. In this week’s episode, I’m talking about the quiet loneliness that can come with leadership—and how to stay connected in the middle of it. If this has been true for you, I hope this episode helps you feel seen… and reminds you that you’re not the only one. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 116: Hard Conversations (Leadership that Doesn't Lose You series)

Hey, Friend! There’s a conversation you’ve probably already thought about. You’ve replayed it. Considered what you would say. Maybe even decided to bring it up… And then didn’t. Not because it doesn’t matter— but because it feels hard. So you wait. But what often happens is this: What goes unspoken… doesn’t go away. It turns into tension. Distance. Disconnection. In this week’s episode, I’m talking about how to approach hard conversations in a way that is honest, grounded, and healthy. Not reactive. Not avoidant. But steady. And if you’ve been carrying something that needs to be said, I hope this gives you the clarity—and courage—to take a step. I pray this blesses you, Becky

The kind you replay in your mind… the kind that quietly chips away at your confidence… the kind that makes you second-guess yourself in moments you used to feel clear. If you’ve felt that, you’re not alone. In this episode, the second in the series called: Leadership That Doesn’t Lose You, I’m talking about how to handle criticism in a way that allows you to grow—without shrinking. We’ll walk through how to: pause before you internalize it discern what’s actually yours to carry stay grounded in what is true Because the goal isn’t to avoid criticism. It’s to stay steady within it. And as you listen, my hope is that you feel a little more anchored… a little more clear… and a little less alone. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Hey, Friend! There’s a version of leadership that most of us learn early on: Show up. Be strong. Hold it together. Keep going. And while that may get things done… it often comes at a cost. Because the truth is, there are seasons when you’re leading… and you’re not okay. You’re tired. Carrying something heavy. Trying to stay present for others while quietly running on empty. In this first episode of the series: Leadership That Doesn’t Lose You, I’m talking about how to lead in those moments—honestly, sustainably, and without losing yourself in the process. Episode 88: Why Authentic Leadership Feels Risky

Hey, Friend! Authenticity in leadership is one of those buzzwords that everyone loves to praise—until they see what it really costs. We’re told: “Be an authentic leader.” But no one tells us how risky it feels. Because true authenticity isn’t about oversharing, being liked, or saying whatever’s on your mind. It’s about: Admitting you were wrong—fully. Holding to your values when it costs you. Saying the hard truth when it would be easier to stay quiet. Choosing trust over approval. That doesn’t always feel comfortable. In fact, it often feels lonely. But here’s the reward: authenticity builds trust, not just popularity. And trust is what endures. I unpack all of this in my latest podcast episode: “Why Authentic Leadership Feels Risky.” Because the next time you’re tempted to polish, perform, or self-protect, you may find that the most powerful thing you can do is simply be real. Episode 83: Let's Face It: Ministry Can Be Lonely

Hey, Friends, Women need women. Whether it is a daughter leaning on her mom, grandmother, or sister, or neighbors becoming friends, we are hardwired to need each other. Some women have the same friends throughout adulthood; other women continuously seek new friends. And if you work outside of the home, developing work friends is very important to work satisfaction. But ministry is still largely a man’s world. It is not uncommon for a church to have one female minister on staff. To further complicate matters, it is vital to have relationships outside of your work context. So it often falls on the woman to find or create a community outside of work. In today’s episode, I talk about the need women have for community outside of their ministry context and what they can do about it. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  37. 84

Episode 82: When You are a Leader Without the Title

Hey, Friend, We tend to think of leadership as those people who have titles and authority over people who operate under their leadership. But many people who are leaders, meaning they have significant influence, do not have an official title. In today’s episode, I explore a powerful idea: You don’t need a fancy title to be a leader. In fact, 70% of influence inside organizations comes from people who aren’t officially in charge. Silent leaders quietly shape their teams and organizations, yet aren’t always recognized for their impact. Toward the end of today’s episode, I share some ways you can leverage your silent leadership. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 81: Adopting Barnabas' Style of Next Level Encouragement

Hey, Friend! In today’s episode, I share a little about the story of Barnabas, as recorded in the book of Acts. His nickname, given to him by the Apostles, means Son of Encouragement. When you look at the Greek word: paraklesis, the meaning goes way beyond what we think of when we think of encourage. This is why Barnabas stood out. His encouragement was bold, visionary, generous, and healing. And your encouragement can be that as well. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 80: Women in Ministry Need Community

Hey, Friend, I probably don’t have to tell you this. Women need women. We need women we can trust, confide in, share our lives with, and bounce ideas off of. I recently took a survey of women in ministry to find out what they needed and they responded with several answers. But the one answer that every woman gave was this: I need a community of women in ministry outside of my context. That’s why I started offering Kairos Cohort. This is a group coaching program whereby we meet 7 times a year via zoom and twice a year in my home (for those in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area). Others meet with us completely on zoom. In today’s episode, I share with you how it is going. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 79: We Don't Like to Talk About it, but the Church is a Business too

Hey, Friend! Ministers don’t like to talk about ministry as business, but in the U.S. it is in most cases. If you want church to be just ministry, meet in a home, don’t collect money, and have everyone serve as a volunteer. The minute you buy or rent space, start paying people and purchase goods, you have become a nonprofit business with all of the benefits and expectations of the IRS that go along with that. Ministers would do well to fully understand what all of that means so that they can steward their budgets accordingly. In today’s episode, I give a brief overview as to what church as business means and the gratitude we should feel for those bookkeepers and CPA’s out there who effectively steward the church’s resources. I pray this blesses you! Becky

  41. 80

Episode 78: What if Ministers Mentored New Hires?

Hey, Friend, If you have ever been mentored in leadership, or if you have mentored someone else, then you know the value of having someone walking alongside you, answering your questions, showing you how things work at this church that you just started working for. And, yet, many churches do not provide mentors for their new hires. In today’s episode, I share the benefits of having a mentoring system that will be guaranteed to set up new hires for success. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 77: How to Avoid Mansplaining in Ministry

Hey, Friend! Mansplaining is patronizing and condescending. When a man mansplains to a woman he automatically assumes she has no knowledge or experience with the subject. Women can be guilty of this to, although the term womansplaining hasn’t really caught on. In today’s episode, I share some ways a man can avoid mansplaining, by focusing on being a good listener, being humble in his communication, paying attention to non-verbal cues, and being open to feedback. If you are guilty of mansplaining or womansplaining, or you have been on the receiving end, this episode is for you. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  43. 78

Episode 76: How Fair are You as a Leader?

Hey, Friend! If you have never thought about your fairness as a leader, or if you are convinced that you are fair, then this episode is for you. In it, I suggest a self-assessment that you should do periodically to determine if you are fair or not. Fairness is more than equitable treatment. As you will hear in the suggested self-assessment questions, you will need to dig deep into various ways you interact with others. And if you really want to know if you are fair, you will ask some trusted friends, co-workers, or a mentor what they think as well. Then you will get to work celebrating what you do well and working on what needs attention. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  44. 77

Episode 75: Creating Capacity in Volunteers

Hey, Friend! Ministers depend on volunteers to help a church run smoothly. We literally cannot do our jobs without them. Our job is to pour into those volunteers our time, our attention, our resources, and any training they might want or need. In fact, we have the responsibility to lead by empowering our team members, fostering their trust, and building a culture of collaboration and accountability. In today’s episode, I share some strategies for doing so. I pray this blesses you! Becky

  45. 76

Episode 74: When is Dependency Healthy in Ministry?

Hey, Friend! If you are a minister, then you know that volunteers are worth their weight in gold. As a minister, you are a leader and it is the responsibility of every leader to develop those under their leadership. This includes developing both the capacity of your volunteers, as well as a healthy dependency on you for the vision, the mission of the church as it translates to your ministry, and all the support you can give. In today’s episode, I focus on creating a healthy dependency. In next week’s episode, I share some ways that you can create capacity in your volunteers. There must be a balance between dependency and capacity in order for your volunteers to feel both valued and necessary, while also building their ability to take ownership and grow in their roles. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 73: How I Feel is How I Feel

Hey, Friend! Is there a bigger red flag that someone is not ok than when you ask, “How are you?” and they reply, “Fine.” Think about it. When you are doing great it comes out in your words and your tone. Your face lights up and often you feel compelled to explain why you are doing so well. But when you are not doing well and you do not want to talk about it, the most common response as we attempt to mask our feelings is, “I’m fine.” There are acronyms for F.I.N.E. such as: Freaked out, Insecure, Neurotic, Emotional Frustrated. Insecure. Neurotic. Emotional. It can also stand for: Feelings in Need of Expression. In today’s episode, we talk about big feelings and why it is important to acknowledge their presence, name them, own them, and sit with them as long as we need to. I think you will be able to relate and I pray this blesses you. Becky

Episode 72: What Causes Toxic Positivity?

Hey, Friend, In last week’s episode, I compared positive thinking to toxic positivity. With one, there is an attempt to look on the bright side while acknowledging some big feelings that need attention. With the other, the quest for positive thinking feels forced while feelings are discounted or ignored. In today’s episode, we uncover some of the possible causes of toxic positivity. If you have ever been accused of toxic positivity or if you have experienced this approach in others, this episode is for you. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 71: Positive Thinking vs. Toxic Positivity

Hey, Friend! I think we all understand the importance of having a positive attitude. However, in 2005, the term “toxic positivity” was coined to describe someone who has an unrealistic optimism that discounts the presence or importance of emotions. In today’s episode, I contrast having a positive attitude with toxic positivity and it all boils down to how we acknowledge, validate, and own our emotions and the emotions of others. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 70: Your Call to Action to Developing Adaptability

Hey, friend! I think this is a great way to end this three part series on adaptability - with a CTA for you to start flexing that muscle. The only way to become more adaptable is by practicing. And as you commit to practicing adaptability in one area, if you want to take your commitment to the next level, engage a trusted friend or mentor to hold you accountable. Ask this trusted person to share with you times when they have seen you struggle to adapt. Let them know that you are ready to become more adaptable. And remember the motto: Make a plan. Work the plan. Don’t fall in love with the plan. Coming up with a Plan A, a Plan B, and a Plan C gives you a greater chance for success because you have come up with three options that are acceptable to you. And if all else fails, pivot. Adapt. Look for the learning opportunity. You’ve got this! I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 69: What Happens When We're Not Adaptable?

Hey friend! In last week’s episode, I talked about the importance of adaptability and in true confession, I didn’t start working on flexing my adaptability muscles until I was in my 40’s when I started traveling outside of the U.S. In today’s episode, I explore what happens when we are not adaptable. If you see yourself in some of the characteristics I describe, here’s the good news: the ability to adapt is not a personality trait, it is a skill that you develop with practice. It is a muscle you flex. Next week’s episode will be your call to action for developing adaptability. I you like this series on adaptability, please consider leaving a review. It really helps others find the podcast. I pray this blesses you! Becky
