Is this Scrupulosity OCD… or Church Culture?
One of my viewers recently asked me, "Where do you draw the line between Scrupulosity OCD and church culture? Your account has opened my eyes to a lot of harmful thought patterns, but I feel like these are taught to us as children."My viewer has a point! Especially when it comes to high-demand religions, it can be hard to differentiate between what can be classified as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and what is simply part of the religion. In this episode, we discuss:- What aspects of church culture can be confused with Scrupulosity OCD- How to differentiate between Scrupulosity OCD and church culture- How we can do betterConnect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Mourning Past Religious Experiences During Scrupulosity OCD Recovery
After you are diagnosed with Scrupulosity Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), it's very common to question the validity of your past religious experiences. You may wonder how many of the times you felt "the Spirit" were simply the reduction in anxiety that occurs after a compulsion is completed. This often leads to individuals with Religious OCD going through a type of "faith crisis" in which they may struggle to determine what they do and do not believe, mourning who they thought they were/used to be and more.In this episode, we discuss all things related to mourning your past religious experiences (or your past self) during Scrupulosity OCD recovery, including:When you feel like you're starting from scratch when it comes to religionBeing afraid to tell others how complicated religion currently is for youHow to navigate this season with grace and self-compassionFor more information, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/for-when-you-mourn-who-you-were-before-scrupulosity-ocdConnect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. How Scrupulosity OCD Distorts Humility
Back when I was living with undiagnosed Scrupulosity OCD, one of my most destructive OCD cycle loops had to do with developing Christlike attributes - especially humility. The Religious OCD distorted humility to mean that it was sinful to be proud of yourself, feel hurt by other people, etc. And this is not a common occurrence among the Scrupulosity OCD community. That's why in this episode, I'm sharing my do's and don'ts when it comes to humility as a Scrupulosity OCD sufferer. Feelings Aren't Facts - Especially When You Have OCD
It's common to think that if you don't feel happiness or peace, it means you have done something wrong and need to repent. Scrupulosity OCD can find tons of evidence for you to feel this way, and even though you can tell it's harmful for you to think this way, it feels so real!In this episode, we talk about how to address when emotions feel like evidence, and feelings feel like facts. Is It the Spirit or OCD?
If you've been diagnosed with Scrupulosity (Religious) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), chances are you have been confused about whether you received revelation from God or if it was just your OCD talking.I understand that answering this question can be incredibly complicated, especially since many people eventually realize that some of their most treasured spiritual experiences were simply the reduction in anxiety that comes from completing the OCD cycle. In this episode, we cover everything you need to know about how to discern God's voice when you have OCD, including:Key adjectives that describe both the Spirit and OCDHow to avoid getting trapped in the OCD cycle when you're trying to figure out what is OCD and what isn'tReal-life examples that illustrate how to do soFor more information on this topic, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/is-it-the-spirit-or-ocdOr this article: https://iocdf.org/faith-ocd/living-with-ocd-religious-traditions/church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints/Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Is Worry a Sin? How People With Scrupulosity OCD Should View It
Have you ever wondered if worry was a sin? If you have, it's probably because a lot of people genuinely think it is. In fact, they often cite increased faith and/or prayer as the perfect antidotes to worry. However, for people with Scrupulosity/Religious Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), believing that worry is sinful can be incredibly harmful, not only because OCD sufferers don't have control over which worries come into their minds, but also because it encourages believers to monitor their thoughts for sinful content. In this podcast episode, we talk about the importance of moving away from believing that worry is a sin and why that it is important. We also discuss:Why many people believe worrying is sinfulThe healthiest way folks with Scrupulosity OCD can view worrying The importance of nuance in religious relationshipsFor more information on this topic, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/is-worry-a-sin-how-people-with-scrupulosity-ocd-should-view-itConnect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Avoiding Fear-Based Obedience in Scrupulosity OCD
If you have Scrupulosity/Religious Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) there's a big chance you may have had difficulty deciphering whether or not the religious behaviors you participate in are because of your faith, or because your OCD is talking. For example, you may feel an overwhelming need to repent for a sin you committed, but you are unsure whether that is because you actually made a mistake, or your OCD wants you to find certainty that you are in good standing with God.Or, you may be excessively concerned about missing a day of prayer or scripture study, but you can't tell if that's because you have so much faith or because you are afraid to do anything wrong. In this episode, I share what I've learned about how to avoid doing compulsions and develop a healthy relationship with religion in Scrupulosity OCD recovery. "I Blame My Church for My Scrupulosity OCD"
Scrupulosity Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is already complicated enough before you consider that it isn't much of a stretch for the OCD sufferer to develop complicated feelings towards their faith. In my journey with Scrupulosity OCD, I've asked myself questions like:- If I wasn't raised in a religious household, would I still have developed OCD?- Is it worth it to remain an active member of my religion?- Is my religion making my OCD worse? It's painful to consider the idea that maybe I wouldn't have suffered so much if I was not a religious person. Plus, these questions have led me to compulsively avoid religion, and then fall into a hole of doubt and questioning everything about my faith. How do you go about processing this? In this episode, we'll talk about: - People who were raised in Athiest households have still developed Scrupulosity OCD- Even though religion isn't to blame for the existence of Scrupulosity OCD, that doesn't mean it isn't okay to develop complicated feelings about your faith- The mourning involved in healing from Scrupulosity OCD- Three ways I am working through these feelingsFor more information, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/i-blame-my-church-for-my-scrupulosity-ocdConnect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is really good at making a person question everything about who they are.For example, Scrupulosity OCD may heavily impact a person's religious identity by making them unsure of what they believe or what mistakes they may have made. Relationship OCD can blur the lines of what a person's thoughts and actions mean and how others might perceive them – and that's only scratching the surface. If you've asked yourself, "Who am I without OCD?" then this podcast episode is for you. We'll discuss: How to come back home to yourself when you have OCDStrategies for deciphering your valuesCreating an anchor you can turn to when you OCD tries to pull you away from realityHow you can do all of this without letting OCD over-complicate the processFor more information on I-CBT, click here: https://icbt.online/For more information on this topic, click here: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/who-am-i-without-ocdConnect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Mental illness can take so much from you – relationships, self-esteem, experiences – even simply the ability to feel joy, or feel anything at all. How do you move forward? In this episode, we'll dive into a different perspective that can help those who struggle with mental health difficulties find hope and fall in love with being who they are again. Overcoming Black and White Thinking in Scrupulosity OCD
After an individual is diagnosed with Scrupulosity OCD, they may question EVERYTHING about their past religious beliefs because they realize many of the times they thought they were experiencing God's love was just the reduction in anxiety that comes from participating in the OCD cycle. That's why I said in Episode 2 of The Enough Effect that as a Scrupulosity OCD sufferer, it felt like my entire religious past was a phony and I didn't know where to go from there. I've been thinking a lot about that, and I realized that was just another way OCD was trapping me: I either had all the faith, or I had none. In this episode, we'll discuss how to overcome black and white thinking when it comes to Scrupulosity OCD, including:Honoring and validating your past positive experiences with religionGiving yourself permission to live in a grey areaNot getting sucked into trying to figure out what was real and what was not (yes, that's another one of OCD's tricks)Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. What It Means to Accept Anxiety
If you are a person with anxiety, then you've definitely heard someone say something like, "Resisting anxiety only strengthens it. You just have to accept your anxiety and then things will get better." But so often, those people don't explain what accepting anxiety actually means! In this episode, we'll dive into everything you need to know about how to accept anxiety's presence in your life WITHOUT submitting yourself to a bleak, anxiety-filled future. In addition, we'll cover:What it really means to accept anxietyHow to be more open and flexible with your emotionsHow to change your relationship with anxiety (and all of your emotions)How to let go of fear and resistance to anxietyFor more information, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/what-it-means-to-accept-anxietyThe book mentioned in this episode is "Everyday Mindfulness for OCD" by Jon Hershfield and Shala Nicely.Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. Techniques for Dismissing Intrusive Thoughts
Today we're discussing a bit of a harsh truth for those of us who have mental heath difficulties: eventually, we have to take responsibility for what goes on in our minds. This is especially true for those of us who deal with intrusive thoughts. Although we can't control what thoughts we get, we can control what we do with those thoughts and how those thoughts affect us. In this episode, I share an analogy to help you feel empowered to take on your intrusive thoughts in a way that makes you feel empowered, rather than victimized. Other talking points include: How I went from struggling deeply with intrusive thoughts to feeling like life was light againHow the idea of taking responsibility for my own mental health empowered meHow sitting with the discomfort of change can lead to your thoughts not having power over you anymoreHow you have a greater choice than you think you do when it comes to interacting with your intrusive thoughtsFor more information about what was discussed in this episode, check out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/managing-ocd-thought-loops-with-responsibility Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. How to Have Faith When You Have Scrupulosity OCD
Scrupulosity Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition where the individual suffers from persistent, unwanted thoughts, intense anxiety and drives to do compulsive behaviors centered around matters or religion or morality. Like many subtypes of OCD, it is also characterized by excessive doubt and fear of uncertainty.I have suffered from this condition nearly all my life, but was only accurately diagnosed in late 2023. In my healing journey, one question has been at the forefront of my mind: how do you have faith when you have Scrupulosity OCD?Although it is difficult, it is not impossible to sort out how to interact with God, religion and morality in a healthy way when you have Scrupulosity OCD. In this podcast, I will discuss what I have learned in the past year to help me do so, including:- Processing the intense emotions that come up after your diagnosis/when you realize how much OCD was impacting your relationship with God and religion- Learning to think of faith as a choice, rather than as an absence of uncertainty or doubt- Aligning your life with your values, rather than what your OCD tells you to do or fear- How to be comfortable in grey areasFor more information, consider checking out my blog post on this topic: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/how-to-have-faith-when-you-have-scrupulosity-ocd Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer. What is OCD?
Whether you have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), think you might have OCD, or love someone with OCD, this episode is for you. OCD is an incredibly misunderstood disorder, often used as the punch line of jokes or as a way to define "quirks" or personality traits. But it's important to understand OCD for what it is, both so that we can understand what may be going on in our own brains and so that we can extend understanding to those we love who may be suffering from this disorder. That's why I'm breaking the OCD cycle down to the very basics.Today we'll be covering:How I got my OCD diagnosisWhat the four steps to the OCD cycle are and how they operate within different themes, including intrusive thoughts, anxiety, compulsions and a temporary reduction in anxietyHow you don't have to have OCD to relate to what an OCD sufferer goes throughThe two key differentiators of OCD: doubt and an intolerance of uncertaintyHow to recover from OCDHope for those with OCDFor more information, consider checking out this blog post: https://www.abbietabbilos.com/post/what-is-ocd Connect with me:Website: https://www.abbietabbilos.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/abstabbs/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@abstabbsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tothemoonandbacknomatterwhatYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AbbieTabbilosLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbie-tabbilos-55ab9422aDownload my free 3-step guide, "Recovering from Scrupulosity OCD: A Crash Course": https://www.abbietabbilos.com/newsletter-free-resource-landing-pageHeadshot photo credit: Mark Daeson Tabbilos from Your Filipino Photographer.
