Reflections on Parenting: It's Okay To Say This Word . . . A Lot
Send us Fan MailWelcome to the Mentor's Table--a place where you can pull up a chair for deeper discussions about spiritual and emotional health with an uncomfortable focus on surrender. This episode may be unpopular, but I know the principle to be true. Listen the entire way through to hear not just why but what this word MUST be founded upon. It's counter-cultural, but more importantly, it's an act of obedience. It's a sign of surrender. Reflections on Parenting: Incorporating Spiritual Disciplines
Send us Fan MailHow do you teach your children to make Spiritual Disciplines (or as I like to say: Surrender Formation), a regular part of their life rhythm? I tell you what we did, and my prayer is that you take these two principles and use them as inspiration to adjust your own rhythms to raise your children in the way God is leading you to. Here's a hint from my mentor and friend, Jim Wideman: "Children learn more from what is caught rather than taught." This isn't meant to be prescriptive, rather descriptive of what has played out in our family. I'd love to hear your feedback.Pull up a chair around the table at joyabad.com. Reflections on Parenting: The Secret No One Else Is Talking About
Send us Fan MailI haven't heard anyone else teaching this parenting principle, but it's vital. Even if having children is in your DISTANT future, this episode is for you. We're NOT talking about sleep training, discipline, or communication with your children. We're talking about how to ensure you don't have to parent alone (read: how to ensure you will have a community that is invested in your kids). And it all begins with the choices you make about how you spend your time NOW. For those who are already in the throes of parenting, it's not too late. The second best time to start is NOW. Practical & Spiritual Lessons From Choosing a College for Our Eldest Child
Send us Fan MailToday I'm bringing some parenting reflections as the season of choosing a college for our first child begins to wrap up. Even if you think this season is too far off to bother learning now, please learn from me some clear first steps that began in elementary school that you're going to want to hear. Developing Discernment: How to Identify a Counterfeit
Send us Fan MailAs technology develops, discerning something counterfeit from something real is becoming increasingly more difficult . . . IF your approach is wrong. But there IS a way to discern truth no matter how minuscule the false percentage is. It's all about where your focus is. Developing Discernment: When Do I Give People the Benefit of the Doubt?
Send us Fan MailWe are in a season of unprecedented disclosure, which means we have to have godly discernment to know what to do with all these new voices and pieces of information. For too long, we've elevated giving people "the benefit of the doubt" to a spiritual gift of sorts, but you won't find that in the Bible. Instead, we find a clear biblical standard for knowing when enough is enough. It's not showing biblical love to just blindly keep giving people the benefit of the doubt with no end. In Genesis 31, we find our example for discerning how to know when enough is enough. How to Formulate a God-Honoring Response to Current Events: A Summary
Send us Fan MailThe last four episodes have covered a lot of ground in how to form a God-honoring response to current events, so we thought it would be wise to consolidate a month's worth of information into this one summary. (Click on each WEEK to listen to a more in-depth conversation from each week.)WEEK 1 we were reminded that our number-one MO is to be people of love. It's what makes us stand apart as followers of Jesus. So if we are to be people of love, our words must be filtered through God's definition of love as explained in 1 Corinthians 13.WEEK 2 we talked about how to respond, namely SLOWLY. The Bible says, "Be quick to listen, SLOW TO SPEAK, SLOW TO BECOME ANGRY."WEEK 3 we began to define confirmation bias and how it clouds our ability to discern truth. This is a factor that we ALL need to be aware of and how it's affecting our subconscious. Not to miss! Finally, in WEEK 4, we talked about how it's important to be able to discern the "facts" we are being given. First that means having our own definition of truth firmly founded on the Word of God; second, that means we are responsible for choosing the source of our information. We are not victims to what information people give us; we are responsible and capable discerners of Truth.Pull up a chair 🪑Support the showAdd your voice to the Table here . . .Website: JoyAbad.comEmail: [email protected]: @joyabaddotcomSign up for my monthly newsletter here and receive a free "Couch-to-Sabbath" plan to guide you to start a sabbath rhythm. How to Formulate a God-Honoring Response to Current Events: Part 4
Send us Fan MailThis week we're expounding on the dangers of confirmation bias and focusing our attention on two key components:1. You must know you're foundational beliefs to understand where confirmation bias will come into play. If those beliefs don't line up with the Word of God or the character of God, that's more important than spitting out a response.2. God lives outside of space and time; He is not in a hurry to hear your response. He gave us the spiritual disciplines as a way to develop a rhythm of slow and steady in our lives; our response to current events is no different.Pull up a chair 🪑 by commenting on joyabad.com or Instagram.SHOW NOTESPart 1 of this conversation.Part 2 of this conversation.Part 3 of this conversation (where we begin defining "confirmation bias)Confirmation Bias on simplypsychology.org"End Times: Who's Really Influencing You Online" on the Eyes on the Right podcast.Support the showAdd your voice to the Table here . . .Website: JoyAbad.comEmail: [email protected]: @joyabaddotcomSign up for my monthly newsletter here and receive a free "Couch-to-Sabbath" plan to guide you to start a sabbath rhythm. How to Formulate a God-Honoring Response to Current Events: Part 3
Send us Fan MailWhat does the term "confirmation bias" have to do with formulating a God-honoring response to current events? Well, . . . everything! In this episode, we'll define confirmation bias, talk about its effect on memory and recall, and discuss the subtle ways it skews your outlook on events and your ability to properly discern truth. Confirmation bias in and of itself is not bad, but it is important to name and define it, so you don't fall into the trap of choosing a response that is unaware of blind spots. How to Formulate a God-Honoring Response to Current Events: Part 2
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we'll continue to build our God-honoring responses to current events. Not only are we called to walk in love but to take responsibility for our words that could potentially de-humanize the people we are talking about. Dehumanization is a slippery slope to "rejoicing in social injustices," which, according to 1 Corinthians 13:6, is NOT God's love. We'll also talk about the importance of soul care and some practical tips to keep your soul energized and strong during this deluge of emotionally taxing current events. Let's be counter-cultural and slow down rather than jump on the urgent-train and feel compelled to spit out hot takes within moments after another painful current event causes our heads to spin again.Pull up a chair 🪑 SHOW NOTESPart 1 of this series: How to Formulate a God-Honoring Response to Current EventsJohn 13:35 NLT "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples."I Corinthians 13:6 NLT "[Love] does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out."Isaiah 61:1-3 CJBThe Spirit of Adonai Elohim is upon me,because Adonai has anointed meto announce good news to the poor.He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted;to proclaim freedom to the captives,to let out into light those bound in the dark;to proclaim the year of the favor of Adonaiand the day of vengeance of our God;to comfort all who mourn, yes, provide for those in Tziyon who mourn, giving them garlands instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,a cloak of praise instead of a heavy spirit,so that they will be called oaks of righteousnessplanted by Adonai, in which he takes pride.Support the showAdd your voice to the Table here . . .Website: JoyAbad.comEmail: [email protected]: @joyabaddotcomSign up for my monthly newsletter here and receive a free "Couch-to-Sabbath" plan to guide you to start a sabbath rhythm. On the Power of a Table: Tables As Altars
Send us Fan MailLast week, we began our deep dive into the power of a TABLE. Part two of this conversation today focuses on the biblical precedent of regarding our dining table as a type of altar, which means we hosts are then the designated priests meant to represent the presence of God to those who gather around our table. There's so much to study when it comes to tables! I'm loving this. BONUS: We begin with a Bible-reading tip that has helped me recognize the frequency of themes in the Bible when I read through the Bible in a year. And, I finally remembered to add in a personal update at the end! On the Power of a Table: The Power & Protection from Gathering Around a Table
Send us Fan MailEver wonder why we chose the name, The Mentor's TABLE? I've always been drawn to tables, and as I began to study Jewish culture, I learned that gathering around a table is not only nourishing physically but also relationally. In fact, historically, an invitation to a table was not just for a meal but also inherent in that invitation was a promise of protection that went along with hospitality. Here at the Mentor's Table, I take that responsibility seriously. I don't just want to nourish your spirit with teachings from the Bible, but I also invite you to share with me your struggles, and I will advocate for you spiritually as well.Pull up a chair 🪑. Summer REPLAY "Reframing Resistance to Sabbath"
Send us Fan MailConfession: I don't love this title. I don't think it accurately portrays this important discussion about sabbath that, honestly, I haven't heard much teaching on anywhere else. Summer REPLAY E1: Surrendering Even When You "Know" Better
Send us Fan MailOver the summer we'll be re-releasing some of our most popular episodes from season one. First on the list is "Surrendering Even When You 'Know' Better." This episode originally aired on November 20, 2024. Enjoy!SHOW NOTESIn today’s episode, we’re going to step on some of my fellow recovering-control-freak’s toes. We’ll start with Jesus asking Simon (Peter) to lower his nets in the sea after he’s been fishing all night and caught nothing. As a fisherman by trade, Peter KNOWS BETTER, yet he answers, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets” (Luke 5:5 esv). When we’re talking about God’s invitation to surrender, there is no caveat that says we can wait until it starts to make sense to us.How About You?Which of your past experiences does Peter’s example trigger in your memory?Do you still find yourself hung up on waiting for the understanding to come before the surrender? Are there any practices/habits you have implemented that have helped you be able to surrender before you understood the why?Places where we can continue this conversation:In the comments on joyabad.comEmail at [email protected] Instagram @joyabaddotcomStay up to date on all our conversations and the resources I’m creating for you by subscribing to my monthly newsletter on joyabad.com. Reframing Resistance to Sabbath

The HOW & WHY of Our Family's Sabbath Rhythm
Send us Fan MailSabbath is one of my favorite spiritual practices that I exercise to help me build spiritual muscle memory for surrender. The weekly rhythm of stopping and celebrating is a constant reminder that if I stop working, the world keeps spinning and God can still keep running things without me. It humbles me, fills me up with power for the coming week, and develops a deep neural pathway that connects letting go as a safe choice because we serve a trustWORTHY God. A NEW Spiritual Discipline Part 2
Send us Fan MailI couldn’t wait to add more to our discussion about remembering being a new spiritual discipline. One of the points we focus on is how important it is to remember God’s provision in the GOOD times. I also give some practical ideas for how to incorporate remembering in your life rhythm. Take a moment to listen, and then share your responses below.A few prompts to help add your voice to the table:There are aspects of remembering woven into some of the other spiritual disciplines—gratitude, prayer, and Bible reading to name a few—do you think remembering have enough substance to stand on its own? Why or why not?Would you be willing to share any examples of when remembering fueled your hope in the midst of a difficult trial? Please share ALL THE PINS with out-of-the-box ideas for creating your own remembering station in your home. Surrendering Even When You KNOW Better
Send us Fan MailIn today’s episode, we’re going to step on some of my fellow recovering-control-freak’s toes.
