This One Goes to 11
by Tyler Esselman and Michael Osinski
Are you searching for some amazing music, but you can't bear to sift through all those elitist-sounding music reviews out there? Join theatre artists and music enthusiasts Michael and Tyler on their quest to find the perfect album. Each week they invite a guest (or two) to share stories about the music that made them who they are AND to suggest what THEY believe is the perfect album. An album so brilliant that "10 out of 10" just doesn't do it justice.

Ep 123: Kishia Nixon Nominates Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”
The day has finally arrived. We all knew it would happen eventually. Today we discuss the best selling album of all time - Michael Jackson’s THRILLER.Yes, the King of Pop’s magnum opus. And y’know what? It’s just as good as you remember. And making the case for Thriller’s perfection is one of our very favorite friends of the pod - Kishia Nixon! You might remember Kishia’s last appearance on the pod arguing for the perfection of Frank Ocean’s “Blonde”, one of our favorites, and we couldn’t have asked for a better person to handle the delicate, divisive legacy of Michael and this album. Will Kishia stick the landing and earn a place for Thriller in the pantheon? Don’t BEAT IT, tune in and find out!Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? E-mail us at [email protected]. Ep 122: Alexis Jaworski Nominates Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Crosby, Stills & Nash”
It is known that on This One Goes to 11, we like to keep our harmonies TIGHT. No messing about on that score. And because of that dedication, we could not be more pleased to welcome back our dear friend Alexis Jaworski to make her case for the perfection of the positively legendary “Crosby, Stills & Nash” by, you guessed it, Crosby, Stills & Nash.Alexis has the soul of a poet with a riot grrrrl edge and her love of CSN makes perfect sense. She charts her relationship with the band from childhood to the dorm rooms of the University of Vermont, right up to her present day community of multigenerational weaving women. Like legit weaving. On looms! So she spins a yarn in more ways than one. And the case she builds just might might pick up all the necessary threads and earn a place for CSN in the TOGT11 pantheon. Join us and find out.And don't you dare sleep on Blakesville Creamery, people!https://www.blakesvillecreamery.com/EDITOR’S NOTE: Thanks for your patience as Alexis’s audio is a little “AM radio” in this episode! That’s on us (the TOGT11 boys) and we’ll endeavor to avoid that in the future.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? E-mail us at [email protected]. Ep 121: Evan Sawdey Nominates The B-52's "The B-52's"
Boys in bikinis? Girls in surfboards? And is that a narwhal we see? No, it's just musician and music journalist Evan Sawdey, back back back again to share another potentially perfect album with us. This week we're unpacking the queer subtext beneath the new wave party pop of The B-52's self-titled debut album. Also we're screaming out the names of iconic American girls, inscrutable dance crazes, and fantastical sea creatures. (Which is par for the course with Evan.) You won't find "Love Shack" here - that track came later - but you will find the hooks, grooves, and aesthetic elements that paved the way for the band's mainstream success. Tune in to see if we ever find that dogfish (and if the album joins the pantheon). This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 120: Tai Verley Nominates Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You"
Show this week's guest a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. It's fan favorite Tai Verley! The last time we talked to Tai, we were in the throes of the pandemic, and our conversation about Prince's "Purple Rain" brought us some much-needed joy. This time? More of the same y'all. And we're talking about the Queen of Soul herself, Ms. Aretha Franklin.Check out Aretha performing "Nessun Dorma" here. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 119: Joe Rivers Nominates Chic’s “C’est Chic”
Season 10 grooves right along with the return of yet another dear friend-of-the-pod. This week it’s everyone’s favorite Brit Down Under - Joe Rivers! You might recall Joe’s first appearance on the pod, during which we got schooled on the late hyper-pop elder SOPHIE, it was a banger. Joe’s bringing disco heat this week in the form of “C’est Chic” by Chic. You’ll certainly know this album’s tentpole track - “Le Freak” - if you haven’t been living with a tribe of isolated Amazonian hunter-gatherers for the last 50 years. But as you might imagine, Joe does a bang-up job of expressing how this album is so much more than a freak out at a wedding. Disco is JOY. And we couldn’t agree more with Joe’s stance that we could all use a bit more unabashed joy in our lives. But does Joe have the necessary moves to turn this party out and gain “C’est Chic” a place in the pantheon? FREAK (AND FIND) OUT.And why don’t you give Joe’s Substack One Life a read??This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 118: Doug Morrell Nominates Les Paul & Mary Ford's "How High the Moon"
This week things are getting electric. But also a little bit analog. Professor* Doug Morrell is schooling us on the history of the electric guitar and multi-track recording, as we discuss Les Paul and Mary Ford's recording of "How High the Moon." The last time Doug spoke with us, he brought his engineering brain to our conversation about Wendy Carlos and "Switched On Bach, so you know he's going to come correct (as the kids say).*not a real professorThis episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 117: Tyler Rife Nominates Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science”
O Tyler Riiiife… O Laurie Andersoooooon.O Mom and Dad… Our buddy Tyler Rife has brought his big ole hunk of a brain and beard back to the pod to extoll the virtues of avant garde artist/musician Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science”. And boy does he bring it! Tyler puts his full repertoire of analytical acumen to the task and it makes for one beautiful conversation. Full of sharp takes and passionate verve, Tyler is an exemplary dude and we feel very lucky to know him.But will his case be enough to earn spot for “Big Science” in the TOGT11 pantheon? Ep 116: Eric Matthew Richardson Nominates Randy Newman's "Good Old Boys"
Music? We love it! And we loved talking shop with our newlywed friend Eric Matthew Richardson about Randy Newman's 1974 album Good Old Boys. FYI: If you think you're in for an hour-long conversation about jaunty tunes from the Toy Story franchise, you're in for a surprise. This one has real satirical bite and will make you think about the potential role of musicians and recording artists as activists. But will Eric make a strong enough case for this album to join the pantheon? He may have a friend in us, but we've still got standards. Check it out. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? E-mail us at [email protected]. Ep 115: Kristen Bonstein Nominates Patti Smith's "Horses"
We’ve been talking about punk a lot this season, so it’s only fitting that we finally consider the Godmother herself - Patti Smith - and her hugely influential debut album, Horses. Returning guest Kristen Bonstein talks about seeing Gilda Radner’s Patti Smith impersonation on SNL, enjoying the Riot Grrrl music that Smith inspired, missing the final show at CBGB where Smith performed, and using this album as warmup music for a college show (directed by none other than Michael Osinski). We’ve been waiting to cover this one for a while now, but will it join the pantheon? Come along with us to Birdland and find out!Once again, no thanks to Riverside, this one's got some audio issues. We humbly apologize. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? E-mail us at [email protected]. Ep 114: Meg Williams Nominates The Clash's "London Calling"
Guess who’s back in the house. Or perhaps the supermarket. It’s our most frequent guest on the podcast - the inimitable Meg Williams - and she’s here to talk with us about “the only band that matters.” There’s a reason why The Clash’s 1979 album London Calling ends up on all of those “best of all time” lists (even if it is a bit on the long side). It’s when the band really started veering from their punk roots and experimented with other genres, all without compromising their politics. But what else will Meg say to make a case for this one to enter the pantheon? Will she be derailed by our inevitable tangents? Will the final verdict be death or glory? (Spoiler alert: no one died during the recording of this episode.)Apologies for the subpar sound quality on this one, y'all. Let it be known that Riverside is not the greatest recording tool. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 113: Lindsay Teske Nominates The Monkees' "More of The Monkees"
Our Season 10 returning guest extravaganza rolls right along this week with our buddy Lindsay Teske! You might recall Lindsay's first appearance on the pod extolling the punk virtues of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols by, ahem, Sex Pistols. She checks back in from London this week with what might seem at first like a radical departure from her wheelhouse - The Monkees' 1967 release More of The Monkees. A heaving thirty track tome, More of The Monkees actually turns out to illustrate a classic story of the artist struggling to stand in their values in the face of crushing corporate constraints. Lindsay threads the needle on her argument like the pro she is - bringing in her own personal dedication to the album while also reminding us how punk comes in all shapes and sizes, as long as it costs the artist something. A necessary reminder that just because we might snicker at some bands as we look back on them now, they really did do the damn thing in their time. Will Lindsay's argument cut the proverbial mustard? Only one way to find out.Don't forget to subscribe to Lindsay's EXCELLENT Substack - The Band BibleThis episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 112: Jess Winingham Nominates Joan Armatrading's "Joan Armatrading"
Reunited and it feels so good! Get ready to see a lot of familiar faces, because for our tenth season, we’ve asked some of our favorite guests to come back into our virtual living room to nominate an album that came out before they were born. This week Jess Winingham - who previously nominated Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours - has brought the 1976 self-titled album from Joan Armatrading. We talk about the sound of 70s music and the tendency to lump Armatrading in with all the other female recording artists of the era. (Smashing the patriarchy is a multi-step process, y’all.) Will Jess get a second album into the pantheon? Or will her love for Led Zeppelin distract her from the task at hand? 2025: A Year in Music (sort of)
Looks like we made it…to the end of another year! So before we move on to season 10, we’re taking some time to reflect on the music that meant something to us in 2025. Spoiler alert: it didn’t all come out in 2025 (and some of it isn’t even music).Let us know what music stood out to you this year in the comments! And here are the links Tyler promises within the episode:Travis Holcombe's announcement about the end of FREAKS ONLYTravis Holcombe's FREAKS ONLY Spotify playlistThis episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 111: Colin O'Brien Nominates "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Permanent Record: Al in the Box"
Season 9 finale! Weird Al! Colin O'Brien! Need I say more??That's right, the Mayor of Christmas himself joins us today to close out our ninth season in style. Colin is a multi-hyphenate creative powerhouse based in St. Louis, MO and he is one of Tyler's oldest and best buddies. He brings a deadly precision to his case for "Permanent Record: Al in the Box", a three hour treasure trove of hits and lesser known gems from the first decade of Al's storied career. It's the opinion of this TOGT11'er that Al doesn't quite get the flowers he deserves. We do just a bit to rectify that this week. But will Colin make it happen and earn a spot for Weird Al in the pantheon? Introducing The Colton Collection
Tyler here. Catching our breath before our Season 9 finale!I'm checking in this week and introducing you to a new ongoing project I'm undertaking - The Colton Collection. My sister Lauren (our guest in Ep 106) and her husband Casey recently welcomed their first child into the world and, let me tell ya, this kid's simply the best. Our family is having a ball loving on young Colton and I decided it was my duty as his uncle to provide him with his first personalized mixtape. Enter The Colton Collection. What I'm going to do is add one song for each month of his life and see how long I can keep it up. He's about to be six months old so I've selected the first six songs that I think King Colt needs to know. You can find and follow the playlist on Spotify here. Or if you've divested from Spotify, here's a Google Sheet where I'll record the songs on the playlist for your perusal. One song every month. The music my guy Colton needs to know. I'm hoping it'll be the start of a lifelong musical conversation. What songs do YOU think Colton needs to know? Hit me with any and all suggestions. And come on back next week as we stick the landing on our ninth season!Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? E-mail us at [email protected]. Ep 110: Jamar Gilbert Nominates “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool”
We’ve got school spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, and so does Jamar Gilbert! That’s right, another old school chum joins us this week on the pod and we couldn’t be happier about it. Jamar is an artist of the highest order, a truly gifted actor, and a simply lovely human being in general. I hope each and every one of you gets the pleasure of getting to know this guy at a party some day. He’s the best. And it turns out he has excellent taste in music to boot! Jamar accepted the TOGT11 challenge this week and unearthed for us the mid 00’s conscious rap gem “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool” by, you guessed it, Lupe Fiasco. A thrilling, 19 track opus, “The Cool” was Fiasco’s “arrival”, if you will. He really put it all together on this sophomore effort and solidified what would be his signature style of intricate rhymes traversing the landscapes of politics, spirituality, and pop culture in a way that few with his level of commercial success in the hip hop space had before. And he could ask for no better champion than Jamar, that’s for sure. Jamar details just how deeply this album affected him as a young man and how it helped him both embrace his own individuality while opening the door to a whole universe of possibilities for what he could become. Our chat with Jamar was everything we love about making this podcast. But will it be enough? Will Mr. Gilbert earn a spot for “The Cool” in the TOGT11 pantheon? We hope you’ll join us to find out. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 109: Josh Tyson Nominates Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea"
What a beautiful face we have found in this place - it's Josh Tyson's face, specifically!Josh is an actor and sometime musician based in NYC and he has joined us in all his effervescent glory this week to make his case for one of the ultimate nerdy white guy albums: Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. In The Aeroplane..., with its jangling guitar, warbling vocals from lead singer and songwriter Jeff Mangum, and dark, at-times grotesque lyrics, has become a touchstone of late 90s indie rock. Josh spins one hell of a yarn himself, tracing his love for this album all the way back to his first encounters with "oldies" radio and his own attempts at songcraft over the years. We jam on how deceptively simple these songs are and how, at the end of the day, the power will always rest with how personal you can make your art. Oh, and Josh sings a lot in this episode! It's a hoot. Will his case cut the mustard and earn Mr. Mangum a spot in the pantheon? You know how to find out.EDITOR'S NOTE: Michael mentions at one point how he believed Neutral Milk Hotel played on the last episode of The Colbert Report, as Stephen Colbert is quite the NMH fan. Turns out they didn't actually play live but "Holland, 1945" did play over the closing credits. So they were there in spirit. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 108: Michael Osinski Nominates Zero 7's "Simple Things" (with guest host Matt Risby)
It’s Scorpio season, and all Michael wanted for his birthday this year was the chance to nominate another album to join the pantheon. Well who are we to deny people their wishes? Especially in this economy. So this week Michael is nominating a downtempo classic from the early aughts - “Simple Things” by Zero 7 - and we’ve enlisted former guest and TTRPG enthusiast, The Bad Spot's own Matt Risby, to serve as co-host and adjudicator. It’s an album that doesn’t sound like the rest of Michael’s angsty guitar-soaked favorites. It made a much bigger splash across the pond, and it may owe a lot to bands like Massive Attack and Air. We also have some things to say about Zero 7’s inclusion on the “Garden State” soundtrack, and well, there may or may not be a Mystery Science Theater 3000 style episode ahead of us. It’s the most chill way we could think of to celebrate Michael’s birthday. Tune in to see if he gets his wish.Check out Matt playing VOID 1680 AM (with a special appearance from Tyler). This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 107: Rich Hammond Nominates Elbow's "Asleep in the Back"
Don’t tell our moms, but we’ve got another stranger on the pod. (And a foreigner no less.) This week we’re talking to Rich Hammond - musician, mental health advocate, and author of the blog Record Reconstructor - about a shoegazey little gem from the early aughts: “Asleep in the Back” by the UK band Elbow. So it was really just an excuse for us to talk about ALL the amazing music coming out of the UK during that time period by bands like Muse, Doves, and…another band that may have gotten their start in Oxford. The music might be a bit melancholy, but our guest sure isn’t. And he’s only a few weeks away from completing his quest to listen to 1000 albums before the end of 2025! Will he succeed? We don’t know, because the year’s not up yet. Will his album choice go to 11? Guess you'll have to listen to find out.Learn more about Rich’s quest and read all his musings on music at Record Reconstructor. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 106: Lauren Robinson Nominates Noah Kahan's "Stick Season (Forever)"
The leaves are fallin', the pumpkins are spicin', and we can't think of a better way to celebrate autumn than to finally welcome the one and only Lauren Robinson onto the pod! That's right, Tyler's one and only sister has brought us a little taste of the Northeast with Noah Kahan's megahit album "Stick Season (Forever)". We dive into Lauren's emo roots, her dedication to the art of the mixtape, and, of course, do a little reminiscing on Lauren and Tyler's shared musical souls. What more could you want?? But will Lauren do her family proud and gain entrance into the pantheon for "Stick Season (Forever)"? Tune in to find out. Ep 105: Paul Oakley Stovall Nominates Sade's "Promise"
You might say this week’s guest is one smooth operator. We’re talking to the ridiculously talented actor and playwright Paul Oakley Stovall. He’s taking us all the way back to the early days of VH1 with the second album from Sade, Promise. And before you start relegating this music to the aisles of CVS or to those late-night smooth jazz radio stations, you better listen to what Paul has to say. He even invokes James Baldwin! The fact is that this band - led by singer Sade Adu - has made an album with pure honest poetry, genuine beauty, and downright audacity. Ep 104: Marcy Barbeau Nominates J Balvin's "Vibras"
This week's episode is alllllll vibes, baby!Like, it actually is all about "Vibras" by J Balvin. So it is LITERALLY all vibes. I'm not kidding. We welcome Tyler's dear friend Marcy Barbeau onto the pod this week to tell us exactly how and when to implement "Vibras", because she's an expert. Marcy and Tyler got their starts in the theatre together in high school (another LHS Flyer representing on the pod) and Marcy has gone on to design lights for theater and opera all over the world. She's really really good at it. In building her case for the perfection of "Vibras", Marcy brings us back to sun dappled barbecues and a season of bilingual romance. She sheds a little light on exactly why you should add "Vibras" to your rotation, if you haven't already. Will her case have what it takes to gain "Vibras" a spot in the pantheon? Brush up your Irish brogues, y'all. This week Kerstin Vaughn is taking us to church as she makes a case for the 2014 eponymous debut album from Hozier. It's an album that may have caused her to wrestle with her Christian upbringing, and to that we say, "Welcome to group!" She talks about her family's eclectic listening habits, her transition from band geek to theatre geek, and her love for the poetry of this "fae king." And we're talking with OUR favorite piano man - Aaron Aptaker - about HIS favorite piano man and the eponymous debut album from Ben Folds Five. (Which might not really be an eponymous album, if Aaron's theory is correct). It's not the first time we've invoked Mr. Folds's name on the pod, and it probably won't be the last.Special thanks to Luke and Tom at Chicago Podcast Studio and Creator Space for making us look and sound so good! This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 101: Michael & Tyler Nominate Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf" (with Ashlyn Lozano)
In Part 2 of the celebration of our 100th episode, we get up to more hijinks with our buddy Ashlyn Lozano! We look to the future and discuss our vision of where we’d like to go next with the pod. There might also be some mention of a few of our dream guests?? And we officially, jointly nominate Queens of the Stone Age’s “Songs for the Deaf” for inclusion in the pantheon. Ash is a loyal listener and rock aficionado, so she puts us through our paces as we make our case for this gem of 00’s desert rock. Will she rubber stamp our pick? Only one way to find out.And finally, we close out our episode by sharing the truly amazing messages of congratulations we received from many of our former guests. We feel so lucky to have friends like y’all. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all. Much LOVE.Don’t miss this one! Ep 100: Part 1 of Our 100th Episode Extravaganza with Ashlyn Lozano
Man, it’s a milestone day! 100 freaking episodes. Time really has flown since we started chatting music with y’all. We’ve loved every minute so far.As such, we are marking the occasion with our very first VIDEO EPISODE. Your boys are catching up with the times. I’m no Thelma Schoonmaker so goodness knows the video editing will be a little rough around the edges. But fear not, I intend to sharpen those skills post-haste.We also decided to flip the script on ourselves even further and are welcoming our dear buddy, and fan favorite friend-of-the-pod, Ashlyn Lozano on as our guest host! It really could only be Ash, right? In Part 1 of our 100th Episode Extravaganza, Ashlyn leads us on a walk down memory lane. Ep 98: Madelaine Strickland Nominates "Lempicka (Original Broadway Cast Recording)"
We just couldn't make it to episode 100 without covering one more musical. We're theatre boys, after all. So we invited Mike's dear college friend Madelaine Strickland to make a case for the soundtrack to a very contemporary musical - Lempicka by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould. Never heard of it? Not surprised. It didn't last 2 months on Broadway. But Madelaine thinks it deserved better, and she's making a case for it to join the pantheon and have a little more life. The views and opinions expressed in this episode are solely Madelaine's own and do not reflect the views of her employer. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 97: Tim Fawkes Nominates Sarah McLachlan's "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy"
We've been covering quite a few female artists this season, but finally, at long last, we have arrived at the Queen of Lilith Fair herself - Sarah McLachlan - and her early 90s masterpiece "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." (Which is NOT the one with the song that plays in all those commercials with the neglected puppies.) Our guest? Arguably better than ice cream. It's Chicago-based musician, music educator, and Erykah Badu fan Tim Fawkes, who is now the first person to invoke Meredith Brooks' name on the pod. Do we talk about Lilith Fair? Of course we do. Do we consider her place in the pantheon of talented Canadian singer-songwriters? Yes indeed. Do we connect the experience of listening to this album with an obscure SNL commercial parody? Guess you're going to have to listen to find out. Also because we are committed to truth in journalism, we have a bit of fact checking on this episode: Michael and Tim did not see The Futureheads at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Philadelphia. They saw Gomez at the TLA. Glad that's all cleared up.Check out Tim's band Midnight Hour Soul on Instagram and IRL at Montrose Beach this summer. And learn more about that SNL sketch here. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 96: Mars Wolfe Nominates Solange’s “A Seat at the Table”
Well hello there, ya made it back for another edition of This One Goes to 11, did ya? We’re darn glad ya did. We quite enjoy making this piece of podcasting for you. It’s a good thing in my life. This is Tyler, btw! Michael and I split up editing duties and I edited Mars’s episode. (Michael’s better at editing than I am, for surrrre. I’m not mad about it! He's a wizard.)But I digress. MARS WOLFE.Full stop. That should be all the convincing you need to join us for this episode. But that’s not all…SOLANGE.Name a more iconic duo, I dare ya.Mars brought their prodigious talent to this week’s meeting of the tribunal. Arguing with the lightest touch and the sharpest wit for the perfection of Solange’s 2016 gem “A Seat at the Table”. A truly remarkable piece of music that blends all of Solange’s best qualities into a statement of singular artistic intent. It’s remarkable. Truly amazing. But is it “perfect”? Will Mars stick the landing and earn a spot for Solange in the pantheon? Pull a chair up. You know we’ve got room for ya.Keep yourself apprised of all Mars’s doings on their digital platform: marswolfe.comAnd Solange has one of those too! Ep 95: Julianne Lang Nominates The Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces"
It took us 95 episodes, but at long last, we're tackling a country album. Or are we? Who cares, y'all? Because we've got the Spotify-proclaimed dancing queen herself - the hilarious Julianne Lang - and she's here to talk about The Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces." She's also here to deliver a stirring rendition of the bridge of her standout track, to tell you the correct number of times to see "Wicked" in theaters, and to take all those jukebox musical producers to task for their lack of originality. Did we devolve into giggles by the end of the conversation? We sure did. But did this album make it into the pantheon? We'll never tell. So listen to the episode already. If you're in Los Angeles, go see Julianne at Upright Citizens Brigade as part of the Lasers team on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Ep 94: Krissy Vanderwarker Nominates Fiona Apple’s “Tidal”
When I tell people about this podcast, there are some names that just keep coming up when people say “Oh cool, has anyone talked about XYZ??” And the artist we’re talking about this week is one of our MOST requested. Yep, that’s right we’re finally talking about the one and only Fiona Apple and her stunning debut album “Tidal”!And who, you might ask, is taking up the task of arguing this album’s perfection? Why it’s our dear friend Krissy Vanderwarker! Krissy has known Michael for ages, from their early Chicago days, and was one of the artists who blew my mind during those first, heady days as an undergrad at The Theatre School at DePaul University. We get into it in the ep, but suffice it to say that the fact that I get to be friends with two of my favorite theatre artists on planet Earth and talk music, art, and life in this way with them is a real privilege. 18 year old Tyler is very happy. In any case, Krissy builds a razor sharp case for the perfection of “Tidal”. She builds it on a foundation of what Fiona does that other artists may not be able or willing to do: to let it all hang out, to live by her own code, and to bare her soul in a way that keeps us coming back for more. Some artists just don’t miss, because they give themselves the room to only work based on their own expectations. Apple is one of these. And given the fact that she’s only gone from strength to strength, it feels like there’s even more beautiful, uncharted territory contained within her. Hopefully we get another glimpse one of these days.So we’re pretty stoked about this one. But will Krissy have what it takes to earn a spot for “Tidal” in the TOGT11 pantheon? Only one way to find out!And did we hear you need some packaging design work done? Well look no further than Krissy’s work with Seedhouse: www.seed-house.com or @seedhouse_design on IG.And keep an eye on Krissy’s socials or her website (krissyvanderwarker.com) to learn more about her forthcoming film with Paul Oakley Stovall called “Chicago”.This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 93: Tim Giles Nominates Haim's "Days Are Gone"
It felt right to bring another member of the Cherubs family onto the pod this season, so we invited multi-hyphenate theatre artist Tim Giles to make a case for Haim's debut album - Days Are Gone - to join the pantheon. He talks about meeting this album around the same time he met his wife, blaring this album through car speakers in the summer, and embracing this album's 80s pop sound. He also freely admits to having jumped on the ska bandwagon back in the day, though you won't catch him "skanking" anytime soon. (That's a dance term, y'all, not an insult.) Will he make a successful case from the start? Or will it really come down to the wire?Check out Femme Future Perfect, the sci-fi/horror podcast from Tim's wife and a team of femme writers. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 92: Nathan Simpson Nominates Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”
Y’all. We love all of our guests but this one’s one of those damn special ones! Nathan Simpson. Pink Floyd. The Dark Side of the Moon.I mean, come on.Nate is one of Tyler’s very best friends. He is a supremely talented, charismatic artist and just an absolute top-shelf-caliber human being. He brings us one of those truly toppest shelf albums too. Pink Floyd have been on our “highly anticipated” list for a while and Nate is the perfect person to express just how truly special this album is. Love them or hate them, they did something truly groundbreaking in both precision and scope. This kind of album will make you feel human. And Nate put his trademark humor and eloquence to excellent use in the case he builds for the necessity of this album’s presence in the TOGT11 pantheon. Will he have what it takes? Ya know there’s only one way to find out.And please go follow Nate and Kelsey Ann’s film “Stephanie Stevens” on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephaniestevensfilm/ This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 91: Gabbie from New Bands for Old Heads Nominates Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Fever to Tell"
Those other music podcasts out there? They don't love you like we love you. And we were happy to make time for our new friend - and this week's guest - Gabbie from New Bands for Old Heads. She brought us back to the dawn of Urban Outfitters profiting off of the art-rock indie-sleaze movement of the early 2000s with 2003's debut album from Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell. We talk about where this album sits in the evolution of rock music, what has made Karen O such an icon, and what's going on with all that gatekeeping in the world of music criticism. We also talk about Philadelphia with the kind of specificity that definitely won't make people who have never been there feel left out. Give this one a listen - you just might be sweating in the winter. Subscribe to New Bands for Old Heads at meandtimory.substack.com. (Gabbie's also on TikTok, but who knows if that's even a thing anymore?) And check out this audio-visual evidence that "Maps" and "Since U Been Gone" are indeed the same song. Ep 90: Joseph Ruiz Nominates David Ramirez's "Fables"
This week on TOGT11, we give a warm welcome to Tyler’s buddy and former classmate, a mensch, a real “wife guy” - ladies and germs we give you Joseph Ruiz! And he of the eclectic tastes brought us an album and artist *neither* of us had ever heard of before. You know we LIVE for that. Have you heard of Austin-based outlaw-esque, Americana-ish singer-songwriter David Ramirez and his 2015 album “Fables”? Well if you haven’t then get the heck in here and listen to just what it did to our guy Joe. His case for the perfection of “Fables” traces his own journey growing up in Houston, trying on many different hats (including bible college), and finding himself in a spiritual place where he can really embrace the unknown and enjoy the dang ride. That’s a philosophy we here at This One Goes to 11 can get behind. We’re big Joe Ruiz fans, you better believe that. But will his case have the necessary juice to earn “Fables” a place in the TOGT11 pantheon? Smash that play button to find out. Joe’s also a big tabletop roleplaying game guy and runs games around Chicago as part of Wizard Staffing Co! Here’s their Instagram page. Give them a follow, if you’re interested in rolling some dice. Ep 89: Mike Maple of Liquid Mike Nominates AC/DC's "Powerage"
WE'RE BACK! And though we may not be in black, we are decidedly thunderstruck by our first guest of season 8. This week we're talking about AC/DC's 1978 album "Powerage" with real live rockstar Mike Maple of the band Liquid Mike, whose killer 2024 album "Paul Bunyan's Slingshot" earned them write-ups in Rolling Stone, Consequence, and Stereogum. (It's legit, y'all.) This might not be the album that defined AC/DC's career, but Mike makes a strong case for its visceral gut-punching power and its sheer stupidity. And maybe we also talk a little bit about Satan and football along the way. You know, the usual stuff. You can find all of Liquid Mike's music - and purchase a digital or vinyl copy of "Paul Bunyan's Slingshot" - on Bandcamp. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel. Ep 88: George Keating Nominates Peter, Paul, & Mary's "Live in Japan, 1967"
It's the season finale, dear listeners! And what better way to close out our pretty folk-heavy season than by chatting with the Head Cherub himself - George Keating - about Peter, Paul, and Mary's live 1967 recordings from Japan. Best known for their recordings of songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer," and "Leaving on a Jet Plane," Peter, Paul, and Mary clearly have lifetime membership in the folk music pantheon. (And with much better voices than that Dylan guy.) George does an excellent job summing up our ongoing conversation about the merits and motives of folk music AND joining our other ongoing conversation about separating the art from the artist. If we had our way, we'd chat with him for hours on end. Stay tuned for some bonus end-of-year content, y'all! This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel. Ep 87: Isabella Morano Nominates Moses Sumney’s “græ”
You know how we love our multi-hyphenate friends over here at TOGT11! And this week the hyphens are flyin’ yet again as we welcome winemaker-actor-producer and all-around bonne vivante Isabella Morano to the This One Goes to 11 living room. And what’s that she brought with her? Oh my word, it’s “græ” by the one and only Moses Sumney. “græ” is a wide-ranging, kaleidoscopic musical journey that draws deeply from the well of humanity that is Moses Sumney. While it can be a challenge to wrap your arms (ears?) around at first, Isabella insists strongly that this undefinability is what makes “græ” so damn special. She recounts her first experience encountering the album in the wine storage room of an old place of employment and how that serendipitous meeting has led to an ever-evolving and deepening relationship with this music and the artist behind it. In much the same way that Isabella fiercely defends her right to continuously evolve as a creative being, Sumney’s work here challenges the listener to embrace their own inherent multiplicity and celebrate it too. Can I get a hell yeah? Oh helllll yeah. So the album rocks, huh? But will Isabella’s case have what it takes to carve out a place in the TOGT11 pantheon for “græ”? Pop the cork on this sucker and find out. And if you’ve got a taste for wine, you simply must get your hands on some of the excellent stuff Isabella is making. You can find her on Instagram at @isa.wines or on her website at drinkisawines.com. And go support the freakin movie she made! They’re at @teafortwofilm on Instagram as well. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Are you searching for some amazing music, but you can't bear to sift through all those elitist-sounding music reviews out there? Join theatre artists and music enthusiasts Michael and Tyler on their quest to find the perfect album. Each week they invite a guest (or two) to share stories about the music that made them who they are AND to suggest what THEY believe is the perfect album. An album so brilliant that "10 out of 10" just doesn't do it justice.
