KISP - Ep 133 - Silencing Your Mind
Silencing your mind is one of the most difficult things you could ever hope to do. I feel like I have gotten a hell of a lot better at it but I am only capable of doing it in the evenings right before bed. Probably one of the most important times to be able to quieten your mind and allow yourself to drift off to sleep, so thats pretty handy. Todays episode gets into how I quieten my mind and my mindset towards getting enough rest. Hey, howzit going? Thanks for tuning in to the Keep It Simple Podcast with Byron Ovenstone - where my goal is to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be with each episode. KISP - Ep 132 - Penny Wise Pound Foolish
Penny wise pound foolish is one of those things most people do and they may not do it intentionally but it is pretty critical that you identify when you are doing it and be honest enough with your self to admit it. KISP - Ep 131 - Team Work
There is two types of people in the world, those who play well with others and those who don't. We all know people who, even in a team environment, want one of their team mates to fuck up. I remember at school I had those feelings from time to time but as soon as we started getting paid to win, there was a very quick transition from hoping a person in the team who bullied me or was a dick failed to, I don't care who you are when we walk onto that field, all off field antics are exactly that, off field antics, we are here to win and in order to do that, we all need to step up. Business is something of a similar beast in my head. Yes there are plenty assholes but end of the day it is a team effort to get us over the line. Todays episode gets into a recent experience in the office and what I learnt from it all. Hey, howzit going? Thanks for tuning in to the Keep It Simple Podcast with Byron Ovenstone - where my goal is to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be with each episode. KISP - Ep 130 - Time & Money
Money is something you can always make more of, time however, that shit can't be created. We all have 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. No one has the ability to conjure up more time, well no one that I know anyway. So why do we so often waste our time doing shit that doesn't get us paid? Quite often we end up doing shit that costs us time in place of things that we could do to earn some bank. Rather than wasting your time doing stuff you're not good at, focus on the things you get paid to do and pay people to do the things that you don't. Now, obviously if you have down time, you can then do the shit yourself and save yourself some money but if lets say you are going to redecorate your house instead of decorating someone else house, well you're losing the potential to earn money and you're then paying time to do it yourself. Thats dumb! Hey, howzit going? Thanks for tuning in to the Keep It Simple Podcast with Byron Ovenstone - where my goal is to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be with each episode. KISP - Ep 129 - The Wood Through The Trees
It's pretty easy to get caught up in something and before you know it, you're in a tail spin and you have no idea which way is up, let alone how you are going to get yourself out of the situation you find yourself in. This is generally where panic sets in and people do stupid shit that gets them even deeper in the shit. I am a big believer in the whole concept of taking a deep breath and then re-evaluating the situation. Very often, we forget to breath when the shit hits the fan and I am no doctor or scientist but I think the lack of oxygen to the brain makes us do stupid shit. When you find yourself in hot water, take a deep breath and run yourself through the situation and the options you feel you currently have. Guarantee you will make a lot better decision because taking that deep breath will stop you from getting too carried away and allowing panic to set in. Hey, howzit going? KISP - Ep 128 - Everyone Wants To Go To Heaven But No One Wants To Die
Everyone wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die - a saying that I heard over the course of the weekend or last week and one that pretty much stopped me in my tracks and punched me in the face. Truth is, I have been pretty manic at this new contract role and unfortunately that has taken up a lot of my time. The result of this was me neglecting my other goals and aspirations. Forgetting what was truly important to me. The saying hit me so hard because I have been saying for a very long time now that I want certain things in life but my actions have been contradicting my desires. The verbal contracts I have been making with myself haven't been taken seriously enough because I have had too much focus elsewhere. I get into this a little in this episode and I talk about how losing focus can be pretty easy, especially when you fixate on one aspect of your life, it then becomes extremely difficult to bring your focus and energy into other areas. Hey, howzit going? Thanks for tuning in to the Keep It Simple Podcast with Byron Ovenstone - where my goal is to help you get from where you are, to where you want to be with each episode. KISP - Ep 127 - It Is Easy Because It Was Once Difficult
Everything you start is difficult before it becomes easy. It is easy because it was once difficult and you persevered with it. I ran into a bit of a crisis of confidence at work on either Friday last week or Monday this week because I am having to do some stuff I have never had to do before. That compiled with the fact that I am clueless when it comes to what the fuck people are talking about, makes doing the job even harder. Then I took a trip down memory lane and remembered the first contracting role I did. For a solid 6 months I felt clueless. The next role it was about 4 months, the role after that about 3. These things are to be expected when starting somewhere new. I just need to keep at it and what was once difficult will become easy. Just like back in the day when I was playing a lot of sport and had a tough time with with bowlers who were bowling 90+ mph. Initially it was very tough but the more I did it the better I got, till eventually 90+ mph was quick, anyone who says otherwise is full of shit, but it was manageable and wasn't something that I needed to fear. KISP - Ep 126 - Your Own Journey
I celebrated a birthday this week. It was an interesting day, I had a run in with a colleague, nothing too serious, I had to bite my lip but it took all my strength to do so. Byron 10 years ago would have punched the guy in the mouth, zero seconds to think it through and zero fucks given regarding consequence. Today I am a lot more mature and calculated. Anyway, enough about me and how much I have grown and more about todays episode. All too often people have this idea of where you should be and at what point. End of the day, it is your journey and only you can determine where you should be at what point. Hey, howzit going? KISP - Ep 125 - Thinking About Destiny
Today got me thinking about destiny and whether we have a predetermined destiny or whether we make our own destiny. There are strong arguments for both but for me, I just can't afford to believe that my destiny is already predetermined and no matter what I do today, I will get the same result in the end. I work far too hard to believe that shit. I do believe we are all set a timer at birth and when that timer rings, no matter who you are or where you are, your time is up and one way or another, you are out of here but that is very different to believing that no matter whether I work 20 hours a day or play 20 hours of playstation a day, I will get to where I am meant to be. That just doesn't work for me. I have to believe that hard work pays off or I will play 20 hours a day of playstation because its fucking fun! lol Hey, howzit going? KISP - Ep 124 - LUCKY!
I often sit in public places with headphones on but I don't actually have anything playing, I just like to listen to the conversations around me while not being disturbed because I am wearing headphones. Today I got to my new contract early, I needed to be at the office for 9:30 / 10 but instead I got to a coffee shop nearby for about 7:30 / 8 and sat there having a cup of coffee, doing some trading and a bit of other work on the side. I did my normal headphones in but with no music trick and within minutes I was fully engaged in a nearby conversation. The guy was moaning to a friend, mentor or colleague about how terrible his job is, how much he hates his boss and how he deserved a promotion and didn't get it etc etc etc. It got so dramatic that he eventually started talking about how the world was conspiring against him at the moment and there is no God. At this point I actually queued the violins on my phone and listened to some violin music as I couldn't take it anymore. The thing that blows my brain is, yeah we all get down, we all have bad runs but in general, if you are living in a 1st world country, you have a fuck ton to be grateful for. There are billions of people on the planet who would probably cut off their right arm to be in his shoes and he's sat there bitching and moaning about how hard life is and how the world is conspiring against him.... Do me a favour bro! Fucken grow up! I get down sometimes too, I have extremely high expectations and when they aren't met, I can't help but feel disappointed or let down but, then I try to remember where I have come from, I try to remember my journey and I remember that just a year ago I would have probably contemplated cutting off my right arm to be where I am today! KISP - Ep 123 - Network & Net Worth
I severely underestimated the value in spending time with people who are where you want to be in a few years time. I don't know why I did but I did. Perhaps cause I figured that although they were more senior than I was in an organisation, they weren't that far ahead of me. However, I attended a dinner recently and it changed my views on it all. They talk differently, their discussions are about different things and they hold themselves in a different way. All these things then add up to why they are ahead in the pecking order and it is because they conceptualise things differently and I am pretty sure I knew this already but I just didn't put much emphasis on it. They discuss problems and who in their networks can solve these problems and share resources. This all to me is way more interesting then sitting around a table with friends and discussing what a dick Jonny was at school, which just so happens to be now 12 years ago. Those conversations no longer excite me but the conversation around the dinner table the other night definitely did because we talked about trends in business, resources, problems and solutions. Things that you then take into the office the following day, week or month and implement to help progress you in your career and help take you from where you are to where you want to be. KISP - Ep 122 - Passion, A Work In Progress
I spent the last week in California which was awesome. We got to see a lot of the state and meet some truly remarkable people. One thing that keeps getting to me is the fact that there are so many people living with such immense passion and I am kind of drifting around and uncertain as to what it is that I want to do or how I will go about doing it. Met Bradley Martyn the YouTube sensation from Zoo Culture and you could just tell he lives for what it is that he does and he absolutely loves it. Although it was an awesome day, it left me feeling even more broken because I still haven't found what it is that I am truly passionate about. It wasn't till we had dinner with a woman who is very influential in the tech space and she started talking about her lack of passion, that I realised, perhaps it is okay to be uncertain as to what your passions are. If she can have a life that most would only dream of achieving without passion, maybe, just maybe there was hope for me yet. I then started to shift the "maybe" too a certainly and I shifted my mindset to that of, "well this is a good thing, if I did know what my passion was, I'd have to follow it, whereas, right now I am still figuring it out which gives me a unique perspective and I can dabble in and out of things until such time as I feel like I know what my passion is and what I truly want to do". KISP - Ep 121 - Tier 2 Visa Rants
It was an up and down day today, truth be told there were more ups than downs but I ran into a bit of a speed bump which got me thinking of that research experiment that some scientists did with a bunch of children. They gave a bunch of children an apple, the children were happy with that. They then gave them all two apples but took one away from some of them. This caused a scene. The kids that originally had two but then had one taken away were raging! They forgot about the fact that they still had one apple, they focused on the fact that they had lost one or had one taken away. I had a similar thing happen today and I started behaving like one of those children, I only identified it this evening when I had cooled off but I guess late is better than never! Lol I also rant a little about how narrow minded people are when it comes to tier two licensed employees and how ignorant a lot of people tend to be because there is the potential for it to create them the most minute amount of additional work. KISP - Ep 120 - The Kiss Of Death
"We've always done it this way, so this is how we will continue to do it." Or "I have always done it this way, so I will continue to do it this way". I call this the kiss of death. Did I hear you asking why? Because thinking that a process or a system or the way in which you do something is perfect and can never be improved is the fastest way to kill your ability to deliver or to kill you business. By constantly questioning the way in which you do things and the way in which things are measured, you're instilling a "culture" of progress or development. There is no such thing as the perfect way to do things. If I ask 100 people to come up with a way of getting to 100, you'll find that the possibility for them to reach the number 100 has quite possibly millions of variations and possibilities. So why then, in business do we constantly look for some kind of holy grail of the way things are done and then never veer from it? Hey, howzit going? KISP - Ep 119 - Question It
How many times do you think you have missed out on an opportunity because you decided it wasn't for you before you even heard the full story? A lot of the time, we decide something isn't for us long before we even know the fine print or the end to end story because we know someone who told us it was a bad idea or we heard at school, university or via a mentor that it was bad. In the episode, I use an example of 1 million dollars worth of debt, assuming you're someone who thinks that all debt is bad, this hypothetical example would be one you turned down before even asking the right questions around the opportunity. Ask questions, fully understand things before you make a decision on it. A lot of the time, the greatest opportunities we are offered are through things we don't truly understand or have heard are not good ideas. If I listened to everyone who told me that trading was too risky and was a waste of money, I wouldn't be over 60% up on my account this month alone. Yes trading is risky but then allow for that and only trade with that which you can afford to lose. Point is, I explored trading and didn't allow a handful of peoples opinions of trading stop me from getting back on the horse! Hey, howzit going?
