It’s important to talk about good Biblical scholarship. It’s a short step to align the Bible with our views rather than our views with the Bible and its teachings. We create a new gospel that doesn’t reflect what the Bible says. Is it too late for Christianity? For this holiday weekend, Jay provides a reminder for the consistency of love. This is a direct battle against apathy and numbness. We need to be talking about the fight for humanity and the conflict that we are constantly faced with. The Bible and Christianity have been used for discrimination for most of the modern times. People are tired and it feels like people are using religion to ignore or, worse, support the horrors that are happening around the world. In Matthew 7, we can easily misinterpret "do not throw your pearls before swine" as an excuse to disregard others, instead of loving others and being able to argue well. How does hate represent the teachings of Jesus? Jay is taking an honest account of Paul and some of the critiques of the writings that are attributed to him. The hierarchy (Ephesians 5:22 for example) that was set up, by people, waters down the message of equality that is the foundation of Christianity. This only serves to divide us. We can't claim to ignore the horrible things around us. It's easy to justify how we treat others because of something that they did or we perceived they did to us. Grace calls us to defy logic and calls us to care, not when it directly impacts us, not when we're threatened and not because someone does something to benefit, or even agree with, us. This message is NOT fragile. It has the breadth to cover all relationships as well as the specificity to change individual hearts. We're not dealing with an unpredictable god and our perception of god's character is too easily manipulated. That's a tale that has been around as long as religion has been in place. It gets harder to focus on the reformation we need when it seems like things in the world are too much to digest! We have to remain as honest as possible with what we see, our ability to take action while still taking care of ourselves. It's EXHAUSTING! Christians, in general, have been too willing to compromise our values when it benefits us. Jay visits Matthew 5 to remind us the beatitudes still have a place in how we live. "I wish they would castrate themselves". Paul speaks about the contradictions that come together in grace in extreme terms! When we lack compassion, it's even more difficult to com to a place where we can show grace to others. "Justice has to have a bit of love in it, or it becomes cruelty". It might feel like a broken record but Love and Grace are at the core of where Revolution comes from. The risk is that we think that we hear the message and don't need any reminders. A lot of times it takes seeing the need ourselves in order to take action. It's the 3rd week reading Galatians 3:28 (hence the broken record) but there was more to explore. Even when we feel like we're divided, we don't have to let our identity (politics, "jew or gentile") allow us to forget that we are ALL ONE.
