LIES OF OMISSION: What You Don't Say Matters

"Text us your thoughts and questions!"Join us as we explore the psychology of lies of omission - those truths we choose not to tell. We unpack when staying silent crosses the line from protection to problematic avoidance. The Evolution of OmissionWhy our brains are wired to withhold information for survivalThe "thrown out of the cave" phenomenon in modern contextsHow children develop lying abilities as early as 2-3 years old as a sign of cognitive sophisticationWhen Survival Becomes Self-SabotageThe shift from isolated, adaptive omissions to problematic patternsWarning signs: frequency, loss of conscious choice, and expanding webs of silenceHow omission moves from protecting against external threats to managing internal emotionsYour Emotional CompassGuilt: The healthy alarm bell ("I shouldn't have withheld that")Shame: When it becomes about identity ("I'm a liar")Rationalization: The defensive stage of elaborate justificationsNumbness: When the warning system shuts downRegret: Your future-oriented guide back to authenticityReflection QuestionsWhat conversations am I postponing indefinitely?Where do I feel like I’m managing someone’s perception of me?What specific fear comes up around my honest thought/opinion/feeling?Am I protecting the other person or protecting myself from their reaction to the truth? What would change if you were radically honest for one week?TakeawayWhat you don't say matters just as much as what you do say. STOP LIVING IN REGRET

"Text us your thoughts and questions!"In continuing our series on avoidance, we invite you to explore where avoidance has resulted in regret? Learn how to handle difficult choice points with more awareness to reduce regret and how to reframe regrets so you can learn and let go.COMMON TYPES OF REGRET1. Not expressing feelings or resolving conflicts - People deeply regret harsh words left as final conversations or love never spoken, especially after someone dies.2. Staying too long in unfulfilling relationships or jobs - The regret of wasted years in situations that drained rather than nourished them.3. Not taking care of their health when they were younger - Particularly around diet, exercise, sleep, and avoiding harmful substances.4. Playing it too safe - Not taking reasonable risks on career opportunities, travel, creative pursuits, or speaking up for their beliefs.5. Losing touch with important friendships - Letting meaningful relationships drift away due to neglect or petty disagreements.6. Not spending enough quality time with family - Especially with parents before they pass away or with children during their formative years.7. Working too much at the expense of life experiences - The classic "no one on their deathbed wishes they'd spent more time at the office" regret.8. Not pursuing education or learning opportunities - Whether formal education or skills they were passionate about but never developed.9. Caring too much about others' opinions - Making major life decisions based on external validation rather than personal values and desires.10. Not being true to themselves - Living according to others' expectations rather than discovering and pursuing their authentic self.📖 Explore More: Russ Harris "The Choice Point" Video - Excellent visual explanation of the Choice Point model we discussed in this episode https://youtu.be/OV15x8LvwAQ?si=9xSEm-3v32bNBXJa“Face Your Feelings, Find Your Power” - Simply Human episode on using the Choice Point model to stay with difficult emotions and align choices with your values. https://youtu.be/50a_abZg-toPractical Next StepsThis WeekNotice the regret without being mean to yourself about itRemember what you actually knew then - not what you know nowAsk what this teaches you - what's the lesson here?Decide how to use this wisdom going forwardTake action based on your values, not your regre🎧 Listen to and Follow us on your favorite Podcast:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/simply-human/id1734365912Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2ttPaVQOfBR9fOgGbRUCJs?si=e708f65f45924ae4🌐 Connect with Karen and Christina:Email: [email protected]👀 Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SimplyHuman-connecthttps://kleeconnect.com (Professional/Organization Coaching)https://selftrustcoach.com (Personal Coaching)https://www.christinacarophd.com (Psychotherapy/Organization Development)https://www.linkedin.com/in/karen-lynskey-67794/https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachcaro/https://www.instagram.com/selftrustcoach/https://www.facebook.com/christinacarophdMembers: Asian American Podcasters Association: https://www.facebook.com/groups/aapodcasters/about👍 Don't forget to subscribe for more empowering content on being Simply Human.✨(c) 2024, 2025 Karen Lee Lynskey & Christina Caro___________________________________________Disclaimer - This content is the personal opinions of Christina Caro, PhD and Karen Lee Lynskey and is for informational and educational purposes only.
