But she fell in the third round, while US Open champion Samantha Stosur was beaten by Maria Kirilenko in the second round. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his first US Open title when he outplayed defending champion Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-1 in a match that saw some of the greatest shot making of the year. Djokovic came back from a break down in the first and second sets, and the third set was so physical both players were clearly affected in the fourth set. Djokovic ended the match with a crosscourt forehand winner, ending the match after more than four hours. He is the fifth man in the Open Era to win three Grand Slam titles in one year, and he is now tied with Jim Courier and Guillermo Vilas for Grand Slam titles won at four. Meanwhile, Serena Williams was fined $2,000 by the USTA for her outburst to chair umpire Eva Asderaki during her loss to Samantha Stosur in the US Open final Sunday.

Samantha Stosur amazed fans with a straight sets victory over Serena Williams, in what was only the Australian's second Grand Slam final. James Waterson reports on the news from day 10 of the US Open. Once again, all matches were canceled because of rain. An early mist left the courts damp, but the players went out to the courts anyway. They played for about 15 minutes before heavier rain fell, and the storms continued until the day and night sessions were canceled. Being asked to play in misty conditions frustrated the players, including Rafael Nadal. Meanwhile, Jennifer Capriati, Gustavo Kuerten and Yevgeny Kafelnikov have been announced as nominees for the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and Gael Monfils has pulled out of France’s Davis Cup semifinal tie against Spain because of a knee injury.

James Waterson and Lauren Lynch report news from the US Open. Tropical Storm Lee rolled into the New York area Tuesday morning and hung around all day, which canceled all 54 scheduled matches. That means fans will be treated to seeing Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, as well as Andy Roddick, Donald Young and John Isner, play in the same day. Meanwhile, Roger Federer’s daughters were spotted in Central Park, and Caroline Wozniacki had a little fun at her press conference Monday night, as she imitated Rafael Nadal’s leg cramps.

Finally, Andy Murray and Roger Federer qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals last week, joining Novak Djokovic and Rafal Nadal as the four who have qualified.

On the men’s side, 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer beat Marin Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Mardy Fish reached the fourth round after he took down Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

Another American teen, Jack Sock, won his first ever match at the US Open when he took down Marc Giquel in four sets. Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, and Julien Benneteau upset 10th-seeded Nicolas Almagro in straight sets.
