Terminate Toxic Culture with Phil Gerbyshak | We need new insights as The Great Resignation drags on! We’re hearing daily how businesses continue to struggle with hiring and retaining employees. In fact, over the last 18 months, employers have experienced attrition rates in the high teens. Just how bad is that rate? Well, we can compare it to the tech industry which is known for its high turnover rate—higher than in any other business sector. The tech industry’s historic turnover rate has been just over 13%. So the attrition rates in the high teens that we’ve been seeing for the last year and a half exceed the turnover rate of the industry that has had the highest rate! And what we like to do here on The Counterfeit Sleep Podcast® is to get at the WHY that’s driving the problem. So the obvious question is Why is the turnover rate so high? And that’s where it gets really interesting to me. There’s a range of ideas on “why” we’re seeing such high levels of attrition. Some say it’s about wanting more money. Some say it’s about wanting greater flexibility. And more recently, a new “why” emerged: “toxic culture.” In January of 2022, Donald Sull, an MIT researcher and co-founder of CultureX, and his colleagues published an article called Toxic Culture Is Driving the Great Resignation. I recommend that everyone read it, and you can find the link to the article in the show notes. But the skinny is this: Sull and his colleagues identified the Top Predictors of Attrition During the Great Resignation…and toxic culture topped the list. By far. So if we know an epidemic of toxic culture is a major “why” behind the great resignation, that’s good news, right? Once we’ve identified the why of a problem, we’re in a position to work toward a solution. So what now? Certainly, addressing the epidemic of Counterfeit Sleep® is a key element of the solution, and you hold a key piece of the solution, as well, Phil. And that’s why I’ve been so eager for our conversation today. Presenteeism, Headaches and Your Bottom Line with Dr. Stasha Gominak | In this episode of The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, we talk about something all too common: the headache. It’s a topic we need to talk about because the negative impact of headache is huge. Now, I don’t mean the “Honey, I have a headache” kind of situation, although I’m sure that has huge impact on anyone hearing it. What I mean is headache and the negative impact it has on your bottom line. Recent research out of Portugal concludes: “Headache has a significant economic burden, as measured by work loss costs, in Portugal.” Now let’s pick apart that phrase “work loss costs.” Work loss costs can be the result of a variety of factors. One example is an absent employee. When an employee is not at work, his individual productivity is obviously cut by 100%. But what about the more sinister relative of absenteeism…what we call presenteeism? As defined by Harvard Business Review, presenteeism is when your employee is on the job…but not fully functioning. Presenteeism can cut individual productivity by one-third or more. And no matter how present you may be at this particular moment, it’s easy to appreciate how a loss of 1/3 of productivity has a significant impact on your bottom line. So what can you do to mitigate the negative impact has on your bottom line? That’s what we get into today with our guest, Dr. Stasha Gominak. According to research by the Harvard Business Review, half of CEOs struggle with feelings of isolation. And of those, a whopping 61% feel it’s hurting their job performance. SIDS, Royal Chins and Anthropology with Dr. Kevin Boyd In this episode, we go beyond the workplace and look into something that impacts us on a profound level: the death of an infant. October is PREGNANCY & INFANT LOSS AWARENESS month and we’re focusing on SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—or what we used to call Crib Death. Each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) in the United States. In 2019, about 1,250 deaths of those 3,400 deaths were due to SIDS itself. But here’s the thing: what does that really tell us? After all, a syndrome according to Merriam Webster is “a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition”. So SIDS helps us know what happened: tragically, an infant died suddenly and unexpectedly. But the term SIDS doesn’t tell us WHY. And there’s a reason for that: It’s because we don’t know why. That’s what makes me so grateful for the ongoing work of pioneering researchers in the fields of sleep medicine and airway health. Top Talent Attraction with Bill Humbert If you’ve been listening to the business reports—or even the nightly news—you’ve heard there’s a labor shortage. Interestingly, in the Quarterly Economics Briefing for Q2*, it is noted that it is a “perceived labor shortage” — really just a reflection of COVID-related changes in two areas: 1) the labor supply and 2) the labor market re-equilibration from the rapid rebound of demand for labor as businesses reopened. LABOR SUPPLY DECLINES If we look further at labor supply, the briefing states, "During the pandemic, labor force participation declined most sharply for women with family responsibilities and for workers over 55.” So let’s first look at the women’s labor force participation—it is expected to increase by the end of this year. And that makes sense because, for example, more kids are back at school, leaving women with fewer family responsibilities—at least in theory, as I’m sure the moms who are listening would agree. But back to the labor supply and our second group…the workers over 55. Can we expect the same increase in this group? No. And why is that? Simply because the shortage of workers over 55 was not a result of a more temporary reason like family responsibilities. No, the labor shortage for workers over 55 came about because there was a wave of early retirements in this population. So what does this labor shortage mean for you if you’re the Chief Talent Officer—or any member of the C-Suite for that matter? It means top talent recruitment will be more difficult than ever.
