Therapy Tea: Demystifying the Mental Health Profession

Why, oh why, did I become a therapist? What was I thinking?!? Am I losing it? Or was I just misinformed?.... Join Therapy Tea hosts, Jazmin and Karen, two licensed professional counselors, every other Wednesday, as they, with the help of other mental health professionals, seek to find the answers to these deep, gut-wrenching, existential questions. Each episode, they interview fellow counselors and other professionals working in the mental health field to discuss mistakes they’ve made, career mis-steps, and those “ah-ha!” and “AHHHHHHH!!!!” moments that shift perspective. They cover the real-life practice of mental health work through a pretentious-free lens and reveal the out-of-the-textbook realities of counseling theories. All the while, they hope desperately to gain some hindsight insights on all the things they wish they had known before becoming counselors.

    47. RE-RELEASE: Alason Rides Again for our 2nd Anniversary! (ft. Alason Polanco, LPC)

Today, in honor of our 2nd (what!?!) anniversary, we’re re-releasing our very first ever interview with the fantastic Alason Polanco, who has been down for whatever with Therapy Tea Podcast from the start! We hope you enjoy hearing from her again because what she talks about is still relevant today. We also hope you revel in how far we've come...sound quality, editing, it's all getting super professional over here, but we're still just having a blast with our friends! Alason is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She is currently working for a company that specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and mood disorders as a Travel Senior Primary Therapist. While she is primarily Austin, Texas based, she is also working on getting her counseling licenses in both Washington and Maryland. With Alason we discuss her experience growing up in a Hispanic immigrant family where emotions and mental health were not discussed, how she learned about setting personal and professional boundaries the hard way, and what it was like to white-knuckle her way through active depression and untreated ADHD while attending college. We talk about neurodivergence, the minority experience in eating disorders, and founding a queer teen group in a small Texas town. We discuss her passion for advocating and standing up for yourself along with the importance of therapists going to therapy, making friends in grad school, and taking every minute of your PTO.Resources mentioned: PBS video-short series “Decolonizing Mental Health”: https://www.pbs.org/show/mysteries-mental-illness/specials/ Institute of Chicana/o/x Psychology and Community Wellness: https://www.razapsych.org/ One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez The Giver by Lois Lowry River City Advocacy's LGBTeen program: https://rivercityadvocacy.org/ OutYouth: https://www.outyouth.org/ Fiesta Youth: https://www.fiesta-youth.org/ RAICES Texas: https://www.raicestexas.org/about Thank you for listening! This week Karen learned that effective networking is just about being yourself, answering genuine questions, and talking about what you actually care about in public with others, even strangers! You never know where it will lead or who needs to know about you and your work! This week we are sharing Part 1 of our conversation with Nicole Uhlenbrock Garcia who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. Nicole currently works part-time as a school counselor in the San Antonio area and PRN (on an as needed basis) as a case manager and group counselor at an inpatient hospital for adults.Nicole shares how her interest in what she calls “the universality of human suffering” brought her into counseling and particularly into grief work. Nicole has some absolutely great insights to share about working with and supporting others experiencing grief. With Nicole we also talk about her consistent interest in wanting to work with kids as a counselor and how she chose the LPC route vs. the school counselor route initially. She talks about how important for her it has always been to have some variety in her professional life and how she knew from early on that working in private practice is not for her. Nicole also gets vulnerable and shares how the commonly heard messaging that private practice is the “gold standard” for counselors has impacted her. Nicole has figured out a way to make her license work best for her, which is awesome!Thank you for listening! By the way, if you're curious about how we produce this show, we use Alitu. 44. Listening to People’s Stories and Healing IN Community (ft Beth Cortez-Neavel, LPC, LMFT-Associate)

Warning: this episode contains discussions of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and trauma. This week Jazmin learned that shifting where she works so that she’s more comfortable makes a huge difference in the way she feels about working and the quality of counseling she provides. It’s like a revelation to Karen to consider that maybe it’s okay to meet virtually with a client from the privacy of one’s own back porch. This week we are sharing our conversation with Beth Cortez-Naevel who is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in Texas. They hold a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Simmons College, a Master of Arts in Journalism from University of Texas at Austin, and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University - San Marcos. Beth is currently working in her private practice in the Austin area called Queer AF Therapy. They focus on working with queer and trans folks, survivors of sexual assault, sexual abuse, family and intimate partner violence. With Beth we talk about their first career in Journalism and how their initial attraction to that work was a love of hearing other people’s stories. Beth shares the way they noticed some ethical ick in the journalism industry and then shifted professions into becoming a counselor. We totally vibe with Beth about the way acronyms do not actually help us remember anything and we all have at least half a dozen training recordings that we signed up for but haven’t gone back to finish listening to. With Beth we talk about the decision making and process to being dual licensed. We talk about what it’s like to try to work and live under oppressive, toxic, and deeply flawed systems; the challenges of being helping professionals in a capitalist system. Beth shares what it’s been like for them to come out as non-binary, how they think about the ethics of self-disclosure, and particularly how they show up as a therapist working within their own community. We’d love to hear from y’all how you navigate these things in your practice. Also, Jazmin recommends the show Shrinking and shares how it connects to this topic. One of the most fun aspects of our profession is getting to learn new stuff as we strive to teach others! This week we are sharing our conversation with Jeana Martin who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and a Spiritual Director. With Jeana we talk about what the difference is between being a spiritual director and a counselor in working with clients. She goes into depth about how she sees and approaches boundaries in her work. Jeana really leans into her Somatic Experiencing expertise in all of the ways that she works with clients and so we explore several of the different ways she does that. This week Karen learned that BEHC is the boy who cried wolf. Let’s all get together and advocate for quarterly bulletins instead of sporadic, non-specific, and often error-laden emails from our licensing board regarding “rule updates.”This week we are sharing our conversation with Kealan Muth who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. He has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology from University of Oklahoma and a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University - Central Texas. He works as the Clinical Director of Alchemy Collective, a group practice located in New Braunfels. He both manages the practice and has his own caseload of clients, where he specializes in couples work (esp. high conflict couples), trauma intensives, and neurodivergence. With Kaelan we discuss the true crime to counselor pipeline, his CPS experience, and how he channeled his initial interests in biology and psychometry into his specialties as a counselor in private practice. Because Kaelan works as a Clinical Director, he shares some details about managing employees, including the challenges around professionalism. 40. Holiday Special: It's Xmas Eve and All Through the House...

This week we’re dropping a very silly conversation between Jazmin and Karen all about closing out another year! 2026, here we come! This one is light and fun: we discuss both terrible and beloved Christmas movies, the particular trauma that has been 2025, and how we’re both really looking forward to this year just ending already. We’ve also got podcast changes happening in 2026 and we need your feedback!Thank you for listening! By the way, if you're curious about how we produce this show, we use Alitu. 39. School Counseling Requires Self-Advocacy and the Insurance Ponzi Scheme (ft. Robin Burleson, LPC, PMH-C)

This week Jazmin learned that not only are worksheets not *all bad*, but also, she actually kinda likes them. [Gasp!] That’s right y’all - done properly and with intention, worksheets in therapy can be really useful and helpful. Just don’t use them wrong (which is really easy to do). This week we are sharing our conversation with Robin Burleson who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and a certified Perinatal Mental Health Counselor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of North Texas and a Master of Education in Counseling from the University of North Texas. Robin has a private practice called Her Journey Counseling where she focuses on providing individual therapy for women and teen girls. With Robin we discuss some of the logistical things to think about before offering something like “walk-and-talk” therapy in your practice. She breaks down school counseling, including what it is, challenges in being supported administratively as a school counselor, and how it is an amazing learning and work experience option for LPC-Associates. With Robin we also explore her shift into private practice and specializing in perinatal mental health -- including explaining and defining that for everyone all the time! She joins in our complaints about insurance companies generally and how they directly interfere with delivering mental health services effectively. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina and a Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Shawna currently works with an EAP full-time and then also runs a private practice on the side where she offers counselor supervision. Shawna shares her extremely unconventional journey into becoming a counselor and how she adapted her practice after realizing that direct client work is just not her jam. Say what?!? Shawna also talks about how some personal experiences pushed her into exploring perhaps less-conventional wellness ideas and practices, which then led her to the theory of Human Design, which then shifted her decision making in all areas of her life. Shawna is so honest and clear about who she is and how she shows up - she’s unique and she knows it! Listen in and be inspired by her authenticity and creativity in how she navigates this profession.Resources mentioned: Balance is B.S.: How to Have a Work. Life. 37. The Wrecking Ball Effect and Finding Breathwork (ft. Kimber Achorn, LPC)

This week Jazmin learned so much about balancing returning to school while being a practicing counselor. What she’s learning in school - all about applied behaviorism - is also dove-tailing into her counseling work with her clients because it’s enabling her to explain so much so differently than before. We should all learn our ABC’s! 36. Disrupting the System and Decolonizing Mental Health (ft. Alyssa Cedillo, LPC-S, RPT-S)

This week Karen learned that she does not have a good way to re-calibrate to client work after a long vacation. We’ve talked about having transitions from client work back into home life, but what about the reverse? Let us know if you have any suggestions here because we both really wonder what are some options for how to transition back into therapeutic work-mode after being in vacation-mode. Check out The Couch Next Door podcast! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2285228/about We love Candice Fraser and you will too! Alyssa’s passion for decolonizing mental health services is palpable in this conversation with her and her entire career is focused on advocating for clients facing oppression, trauma, and intergenerational challenges, in navigating systemic barriers. With Alyssa we discuss the importance of getting out in your community, challenging yourself to expand your perspective, and embracing discomfort as a necessary component of growth and healing - both as an individual and for a system. Alyssa does not shy away from saying the things that need to be said and is a role model for how to professionally be a megaphone pushing for change at every level. 35. Being the Outer Nesting Doll and the Adventure of Supervising (ft. Kate Walker, Ph.D., LPC-S, LMFT-S)

This week Jazmin wants to normalize the “summer slump”. It’s a real challenge for lots of mental health professionals in private and group practice and it’s not about you! Seasonal impacts are a little-discussed reality of this profession, particularly when you’re working outside of an agency or treatment center setting. Our recommendation, don’t take it personally, don't make big changes to how you do things during this time of year, and definitely don't Give a Mouse a Cookie!Check out The Couch Next Door podcast! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2285228/about We love Candice Fraser and you will too! How many times have you felt like you’re *supposed* to be a poor martyr for the cause? 33. Creating Good from Rumination and Cyberstalking is Real, Y’all (ft. Susan Stallworth, LPC)

Warning: this episode contains discussions of cyberstalking, harassment, and trauma. This week Jazmin learned how fun it is to work with clients on writing and editing their text messages to others. It’s a perk of the job that we didn’t really learn in grad school, but it’s the opportunity to interrupt patterns and reinforce skills in real time. Perhaps only Jazmin and Karen think this sort of thing is fun in counseling…anyone else agree? This week we are sharing our conversation with Susan Stallworth who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Colorado, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis is Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. Susan currently works in private practice where she primarily works within the LGBTQ+ community, with complex trauma, as well as with personality and mood disorders. After a harrowing experience of online stalking and harassment, Susan researched and has developed an expertise in online privacy and safety for mental health professionals. With Susan we discuss some of what happened to her, how isolated she felt in trying to navigate the situation ethically and safely, and how she has turned her real-life experience into a resource for others. 32. Writing Strongly Worded Letters and "Paying your Dues" is Bullshit (ft. Lauren McKay, LPC)

This week Karen learned how much sex education is required in counseling work, especially in couples counseling. The truth is that sex, intimacy (and the difference between those two!), basic sexual functioning, and consent are regular and frequent areas of focus in sessions with clients. Grad school did not prepare us for this! So, learn the facts and get comfortable talking about this stuff, cuz it’s part of the work! Our recommended starting place: the book Come as You Are by Emily NagoskiThis week we are sharing our conversation with Lauren McKay who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas State University in San Marcos and a Master of Arts in Community Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Lauren is currently in private practice where she works with clients experiencing trauma and grief, and she is EMDR and IFS trained. Lauren has worked in a lot of different settings and ultimately found her way into treating trauma professionally through her own personal experiences with trauma and seeking treatment for herself. With Lauren we do a lot of mind-meld complaining about all the bullshit that we’ve encountered along the ladder of this profession - before and after grad school AND before and after licensure. 31. Popping Your Personal Bubble and Taking Your Time (ft. Lisa Kruse, LPC)

This week Jazmin learned about a unique career path in the mental health profession: a counseling consultant. What’s that, you say? We’re all learning together here, but it sounds like a cool job to be the expert customizing connector for treatment options, and we’re both intrigued! #flowchartmaker #rolodexmanager #treatmentmatchmakerThis week we are sharing our conversation with Lisa Kruse who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Arts in Counseling from St. Edwards University in Austin. Lisa currently operates a private practice in the Dripping Springs area called Spark River Counseling where she focuses on working with adult individuals, women with ADHD, and trauma from a somatic-focus. Lisa’s story into the counseling profession is so vulnerable and refreshing because she took about 10 years to get fully licensed; as a full time parent, she eased into the profession gradually and we so appreciate her helping us to normalize that way of doing this! With Lisa we also get into a fun debate (or debacle? - you decide!) about the “magic” of counseling, which she appreciates with a sense of awe and wonder. Resources mentioned: Bob Newhart “Stop It” Sketch: https://youtu.be/bcSAQyzPcl0?si=Uin1s7oHcbG_b46e The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life by Lisa MillerGood Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be by Becky KennedyDr. Becky’s Good Inside YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQcifo_12x84Uji6h1TVmKg Lisa’s practice, Spark River Counseling: https://sparkrivercounseling.com/ Thank you for listening! 30. Calling out Predatory Practices and Being Transparent About Money (ft. Sarah Osmer, LPC-S)

This week Karen learned how important it is to continually remain attuned to and check in with your own bias and alignment with each person in the relationship (or lack thereof…) when you’re working with a couple, and shares some of the things she does to make sure she’s showing up ethically when working with clients who are more than one person. This week we are sharing our conversation with Sarah Osmer who is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rhodes College and a Master of Education from the University of Houston. Sarah currently owns a medium-sized group practice in Austin, the Carlisle Collective, where she sees clients, supervises, and manages the practice itself. She wears a ton of different hats as a practice owner and has become increasingly passionate about helping clinicians in their early careers develop and thrive. 29. Loving Your Overhead Projector and Keeping Your Dream Alive (ft. Kristin Sharp, LCSW-S)

This week Jazmin learned she might have a previously unrealized session number threshold level. We talk about paying attention to one’s own feelings and emotional reactions when working with clients and the lack of education and preparation around termination, which is another skill needed for private practice that we didn’t know we needed. This week we are sharing our conversation with Kristin Sharp who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Science in Social Work also from the University of Texas at Austin. Kristin currently runs her own private practice in Austin, Blue Psychotherapy, where she focuses on adolescents, young adults, and families with a very intentional attachment approach. She is also an Adjunct Faculty Professor at UT Austin where she teaches one semester a year. With Kristin we discuss how she job hopped her way into her most satisfying job situation at present! She talks about how we as counselors are not responsible for “fixing” people, instead she emphasizes the importance of being with. Kristin is fun, engaging, and the kind of person we hope you feel just as comfortable with as we do!Resources mentioned: You Are the One You’ve Been Waiting For: A New Approach to Intimate Relationships with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard C. 28. Having Grit and Constructing the New System (ft. Kaimi Mattila, LCSW)

This week Karen learned about poverty. Karen shares details about her experience participating in a poverty simulation - which we learned about from Kaimi - including the emotions triggered and insights gained. We encourage everyone to find a poverty simulation near you to participate in because there’s a difference between intellectually getting it and experientially getting it.In our interview, we talked to Kaimi Hideyo Mattila who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker - Supervisor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Family Services from the University of Northern Iowa and a Masters in Social Work from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.Kaimi currently runs her own clinical supervision practice called Empowered Clinical Supervision where she provides supervision for social workers, even though that’s not what we focus on in this conversation. We highlight instead the real systemic change that Kaimi is a part of in her role as the Mental Health Court Administrator for the Hays County Mental Health Court. With Kaimi we discuss what a mental health court is and does, as well as what it is like to work with people with mental health issues who intersect with the justice system. Kami is so passionate about her work and the work of mental health specialty courts all over. Disclaimer: All views included herein are solely Kaimi, Karen, and Jazmin’s personal views and do not represent the views of the Hays County Mental Health Court or Hays County. Resources mentioned: John Maxwell leadership books: https://store.maxwellleadership.com/collections/all-books Salary Negotiation with Deb Ellis podcast episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBqkjYorxIk Hays County Mental Health Court: https://www.hayscountytx.gov/mental-health-courtKaimi’s website for supervising: https://www.empoweredclinicalsupervision.com/ Just Mercy (2019 film)Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan StevensonReality Check Texas: https://texasrealitycheck.com/ What is a Poverty Simulation?: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6001599/ Thank you for listening! 27. 1st Anniversary Episode: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Podcasting

In celebration of the one year anniversary of publishing Therapy Tea episodes, we are releasing a super special episode! (whoo hoo!) Today, we’re opening up about our journey into the mental health podcasting fray, sharing the origin story of the Therapy Tea podcast, the details of our planning and preparing stage, and - of course - what we wish we had known before we started podcasting. We are being vulnerable, sharing our imperfections and deep fears, and outlining exactly what’s been awesome about this and what has totally sucked about this. We’re sharing specific details about mistakes and fuck ups we’ve experienced so far, and what we’ve learned from those incidents -- so hopefully you can side-step them when you start your very own podcast! THANK Y'ALL for listening, for supporting, and for joining us on this journey as we try to stumble our way into something great!Especially in this episode we want to reiterate that we love using Alitu to record, edit, produce, and release our episodes. We are affiliates and appreciate your supporting us by using our code to try Alitu out for yourself. Use our code tea50 at Alitu.com for 50% off your first month!Thoughts? Questions? 26. Puking up Rocks and Treating Animals with Radical Acceptance (ft. Liz Stein, LPC)

This week Jazmin goes into the impacts of being ill-equipped in graduate school to properly identify and assess for personality disorders. It’s been such an eye-opener to get out into the actual work of counseling and find high-conflict personalities, disordered personalities, and attachment disordered folks just running amok and wrecking havoc, while also feeling shell-shocked and ill-prepared to handle that. Let’s all get more educated on this stuff together! This week we are sharing our conversation with Liz Stein who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M. She also has a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Texas State University. Also, along with her co-counselor, Rusty the poodle, she has a certificate in Animal Assisted Counseling from Texas State AAC Academy. Liz currently works at a partial hospitalization program, primarily working with adolescents and their families. With Liz we explore what it’s like to work at a higher level of care with higher acuity clients every day, including notes on crayon wrappers, managing parent expectations, and collaborating directly with outpatient clinicians. While Liz’s job sounds like a ton of work, she affirms that she is enjoying the chaos of it right now. Liz often works with Rusty the poodle as her co-counselor and so we dig into what that’s like, including the differences between a therapy dog designation and an animal assisted counseling certification, how she handles setting boundaries with her clients and her dog, and her pet peeves about others’ treatment of animals. Resources mentioned: Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counseling 4th Edition by Cynthia K. 25. Trauma Conscious Embodiment and Revising the Gauntlet Years (ft. Jennyfer Rosado, LPC-S, LCMHC)

This week Karen talks about the frequent reality of crunching CE requirements immediately before a license renewal. It’s tough always having the best intentions to get ahead, but then still ending up putting most of it off until the last minute. Why is it so hard to change this pattern?! There’s a tension between wanting to learn and complete CEs and having to block off time to not see clients in order to do that, so around and around we go.This week we are sharing our conversation with Jennyfer Rosado, who currently runs a medium-sized group practice, Selah Trauma Counseling Center, in Wichita Falls, Texas. She’s a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in New Hampshire and a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas. She also has several certifications in trauma work, including Brainspotting and polyvagal. Jen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Chadron State College in Nebraska. She also has two Masters degrees, one in Forensic Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and one in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. With Jennyfer we discuss her many, many moves around the country and how she ultimately found her therapeutic home working with trauma from a deeply authentic and integrative way. The group practice that Jennyfer has built in Wichita Falls embraces the idea of being trauma conscious in all aspects of the practice and her mentorship. Jennyfer has such a compassionate perspective about the experience of young and new professionals trying to find their way, especially into ethical and competent trauma work with clients. 24. Tearing up the House and Mastering the Scary Insurance Learning Curve (ft. Kelly Martin, LPC-S)

This week Jazmin learned that she just needed to finally finish reading The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog in order to get out of her “do I even know what I’m doing?” rut. We also share our favorite books for an effectiveness refresh! This week we’re sharing our conversation with Kelly Martin! She’s a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas, a Board Certified Music Therapist, and Certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Therapy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy (and a minor in flute performance!) from Sam Houston State University. She also has a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University as part of the University of Maryland University systems.Kelly is a Triple B! - A Bad. Business. Bitch. And we absolutely vibe with her! Kelly currently runs a medium-sized group practice, KM Counseling Services, in Schertz, Texas. She’s a hard-working, no-nonsense multi-tasker who is both relatable and intimidating. We are all just plain lucky to get on her calendar! With Kelly, we dig into what it was like for her to build a thriving, multi-counselor private practice from the ground up. She absolutely insists that figuring out insurance is totally doable and, even though there are several gatekeeping mechanisms involved, it’s not impossible and there are mentors out there like her that want to make access more accessible. We discuss with Kelly her experiences taking the NCE while pregnant in Japan, working with adolescents at a short-term stabilization hospital, and the importance of having good boundaries and a thick skin as a private practice counselor. 23. Being Part of the Solution and Bridging Gaps in Communities (ft. Jonnie Wilson, LPC)

Warning: this episode contains discussions of trauma, and descriptions of sexual abuse, sexual assault, medical abuse, and domestic violence. This week Karen learned how to navigate through the embarrassment and horrendousness of being a gross human in front of a client, specifically, nearly coughing to death. What is a counselor to do when confronted with the choice between one’s own oxygen intake or empathizing with a client’s emotional breakdown? Well, the un-ethical choice, obviously. February is Black History Month! How can you connect with, understand, and celebrate Black History? Great question! She’s a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas who is currently in private practice. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and another Bachelor of Arts in English from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State). She also has a Master of Arts in African and African American History from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University - San Marcos. With Jonnie we talk about how she came into her focus on identity work and life transitions with her individual clients in San Marcos, Texas. Jonnie shares a lot with us about working with marginalized populations, trauma, intergenerational trauma and exploring one’s cultural and familial legacy. We also get into Jonnie’s work building community connections and resources, including conducting trainings and running Women of Color groups and women’s wellness retreats. Jonnie shares her perspective about important concepts like the myth of the Strong Black Woman, going to where people are to build awareness and resource connections, and using one’s own stubbornness as a tool for growth and achievement. We talk a lot with Jonnie about how she maintains her mission-oriented life in all of the choices she continues to make, whether it’s education, employment, community involvement, or travel! Jonnie is an absolute wealth of information and resources so, there is more where this came from!Resources mentioned: A Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present by Harriet A. 22. Crashing Upwards and Pioneering Teletherapy (ft. Sena Moran, LMHC)

This week Jazmin throws down on some of the scammy elements in our profession including all the re-up rules for various certifications and then the trainings that charge an arm and a leg for their CE credit (AKA PDF certificate) on top of the cost of the training content itself. It’s a rant that gets us both fired up because of all the rules that we have to follow that then cost us money to follow…sometimes we wonder, is this an MLM??This week we’re sharing our interview with the delightful Sena Moran! She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (or, BCBA). She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida and a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She also completed the Behavior Analysis Sequence as an online certificate program through the University of North Texas to become a BCBA. Her origin story is super fascinating and we love digging into that with her!Sema currently runs her own fully virtual private practice. She started practicing virtually way before most of the rest of us and even has some personal experiences with the virtual therapy corporate giant, Betterhelp, to share with us! With Sena we talk in some depth about Behavior Analysis and how her background in this continues to impact her counseling work with agoraphobia and becoming an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) superfan/expert. She has a course on her website called ACT Yourself that’s a great introduction to ACT that you should check out to get familiarized with it and see if it’s a theory that’s a good fit for you! Resources mentioned: A Liberated Mind by Steven C. 20. Holiday Special: A Merry Christmas To Us All!

This week we’re dropping a very special conversation between Jazmin and Karen all about the delights and dumpster fires of this holiday season! Join us, won’t you?!We define what we mean by “the holiday season” and share some of our personal feelings, childhood memories, and current traditions for holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. We talk about how our experience of the holidays has changed over time and get a little personal about the impact of grief around the holidays. We also dive right into the unique charms and challenges of being a professional counselor over the holidays and explore some of the differences between working in an agency setting vs. a private practice setting during this time of year. We take a look at the realities of managing one’s own personal schedule over the holidays with the demands of clients - both established and new! - and the very real financial and “time off” constraints that anyone who is their own boss deals with. We also touch on clients giving gifts, burnout realities, and how to deal with family drama now that you just can’t un-see it. If you need a break from yours today - we’ve got you, we see you, and we’re going through it too! Cheers to the holidays! Thank you for listening! 19. Sweating Out of Your Eyeballs and Deciding to Retire (ft. Kim Frueh)

This week Jazmin learned the importance of embracing flexibility herself and the way it actually works when a counselor wants to change their schedule to prioritize important life events. Then, we announce and tease our special holiday episode on Christmas Day! The real countdown to Christmas starts now!In our interview, we talked to Kim Frueh, who is currently retired from counseling work. She now owns the Body Shop Movement Studio in San Marcos, Texas and teaches yoga. She was previously a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Sex Offender Treatment Provider in Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Texas and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University - San Marcos. As a professional counselor, she had quite a few different work experiences including working at a residential treatment program for adolescent sex offenders and running a group practice with several other counselors in Austin, Texas. Kim shares details about her group practice formation experience and what it meant to her work and practice once she had her daughter. With Kim we talk a lot about her process and decision making in retiring from counseling work and into doing something else. We explore not just the thought process and emotional aspects of this for her, but also the little technical aspects like terminating gradually with clients. Kim is someone who still respects the counseling profession, maintains a deep love of helping and serving others, and exemplifies what it looks like to listen to your own needs and life purpose. Resources mentioned: Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John TownsendAttached by Amir Levine and Rachel HellerTed Lasso (TV series 2020)Shrinking (TV series 2023)Body Shop Movement Studio: https://www.bodyshoptx.com/ Thank you for listening! ABOUT THIS SHOW

HOSTED BY
