Strength Training for Musicians?? With Dr Amy Likar

I had such a pleasant conversation with Dr Amy Likar today(well, I guess it was a few months ago when we recorded, but I enjoyed it all the same!)She has been in the musician wellness field for over 30 years, and has a WEALTH of knowledge when it comes to body mapping, technique, and connecting with your instrument. She also shares stories of how injuries and surgeries she experienced led her to develop compensatory playing patterns that led to performance difficulties on fluteBut then how those difficult experiences led her to find solutions through Alexander Technique, body mapping, and performance psychology. She also shares how she now formulates her exercise routines based on her body mapping and Alexander Technique knowledge, which I found to be particularly interesting!Enjoy, and keep on keepin' on!Learn more about Dr Likar here: https://amylikar.com/Here is another interview she did on the Flute 360 podcast: https://youtu.be/8qB7_gdxh1M?si=UDC4fU-jTPHPRku5Here is a link to her Youtube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@UCy2JtyS-SZjcaTjZnitre4A __________________________Join the mission here: https://musicianunchained.com/podcastSign up for our newsletter here: https://musicianunchained.com/newsletterWork with Clark 1-1 here: https://musicianunchained.com/lets-ha...Email me at: [email protected] our FB support group here: / 544195998054376 ------------------------------------------------------------------------If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! Tips for dealing with Focal Dystonia in your Music Students

This is the last Research and Development episode for Season 4! This study, entitled “Treating the musician rather than the symptom: The holistic tools employed by current practices to attend the non-motor problems of musicians with task-specific focal dystonia” by Anna Détári (2023) is a really well written piece on what musicians focal dystonia is. She interviewed several experts when it comes to focal dystonia, including neurologists, physiotherapists, and professional musicians who help other musicians rehab from FD. She found that there were three main themes as far as how to help musicians dealing with this issue. Watch to find out what they found! Here is a link to the study: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.1038775/fullLearn more about Austin Pancner and The Functional Musician here: https://www.instagram.com/thefunctionalmusician/__________________________Join the mission here: https://musicianunchained.com/podcastSign up for our newsletter here: https://musicianunchained.com/newsletterWork with Clark 1-1 here: https://musicianunchained.com/lets-ha...Email me at: [email protected] our FB support group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/544195998054376------------------------------------------------------------------------If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! The Biggest Mistakes Music Teachers Make with Injured Musicians

This week's episode is part 2/3 in our Injury Prevention for Music Educators series. And like most content creators and thought leaders these days...I made an acronym for it to help you remember. Nope, it's not the 3 C's of Injury Prevention (sound familiar?) It is just a bit of sage advice from yours truly: Don't be a SAP!What is a SAP? Someone whose reactions to injury in their music student cause them to feel SHAME, who ASSUME, and who PROJECTThere is a lot to unpack with those three topics, but the TLDR is this: Your musicians are humans first, and musicians second. Everything is WORKABLE! With Matthew Tomatz, LPC

I got to know Matt a few months back when I found out what CU Boulder has going on in its music department. Some schools have a downloadable pdf about musician wellness. Well, CU Boulder College of Music has a whole DEPARTMENT for it! In today's episode, I sit down with the embedded psychotherapist in that department, Matthew TomatzIt was an AWESOME conversation! He shares his thoughts on the different types of injuries and how healing looks different for all of themHow healing is RARELY linear. It is often cyclical! How our body whispers before it screams, and why it is so HARD to listen to those whispers until it's too late. And so much more! First of all, I apologize to Ms. Roskell for mispronouncing her last name on the recording (it is pronounced RAWSKell)!! I meant no disrespect and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation! Don't Worry, Be POSITIVE! Injury Recovery Tips from Trumpeter and Content Creator Josh Rzepka

Sometimes the best tool we have against adversity is our own attitude. Viktor Frankl, who survived the Holocaust, once said "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." In today's episode I talk with Josh Rzepka, trumpeter, educator, and content creator, about the experiences he has had with injury throughout his career. And yeah, there have been a few of them. He shares what these experiences taught him about leaning on his community, his teachers, and fellow musicians who have experienced injury.About how important it is for educators to make sure their students are getting credible information about technique online (I'm looking at YOU, trumpeters!)And how at the end of the day, one of the greatest tools we have for teaching is positive reinforcement coupled with constructive feedback. Musician: DON'T Fall for These TRAPS!

This week we hit another Research and Development episodeand this one confirmed everything I have been talking about for the last couple years. A couple of European researchers (link below) sought out to determine if there were certain psychological risk factors for overuse injuries in athletes (insert musician there)They measured perfectionistic tendencies, perfectionistic strivings (watch to find out the difference), athletic identity, and coach-athlete relationship. What they found out was that the athletes that experienced overuse injuries the most were those who scored higher in 3 out of 4 of these categories! This study confirmed the mission of Musician Unchained and the Trust the Process Podcast – to provide resources to strengthen musicians against these types of factors! Keep on keepin' on! How DO We Balance Life and Music? With Josh Kauffman

But we also want to feel like we are living a life outside of our instrument. How do we do both? While this is a question everyone must answer themselves, renowned trumpeter and my friend Josh Kauffman of The Army Blues humbly submits his experience as a potential answer for people. He talks about how one injury taught him about slowing down, and not expecting to "figure everything out" by the end of college. He talks about how his SECOND injury taught him the importance of choosing gear that will help us play well but ALSO play HEALTHY. And my personal favorite part, he talks about how becoming a father has taught him about cultivating and curating a meaningful career as a trumpet artist. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!Keep on keepin' on!If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! This week's study is essentially a "Day in the Life of an Injured Musician." Why do musicians hide their injuries until they are completely debilitated? Why is it sometimes difficult to find proper medical help for musicians? Whose responsibility is it to get this research out to those who need it?All of these questions are answered in today's episode, and I am so grateful to Drs Rickert, Ackermann and Barrett for publishing their 3 part study: Injury and the Orchestral Environment.Just remember this: Your injury is not your fault, but your recovery is your responsibility. This includes educators to do their part in educating themselves on these subjects to prevent further injury to themselves and their students!Keep on keepin' on!Check out the three parts of this incredible study here: Injury and the Orchestral Environment: Part I: The Role of Work Organisation and Psychosocial Factors in Injury Risk Injury and the Orchestral Environment: Part II: Organisational Culture, Behavioural Norms, and Attitudes to InjuryIf you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! It is about setting goals that are within our reach, relative to the circumstances, and going all-in to achieve them. With your recovery, you wouldn’t practice the same amount of hours as you did healthy when you are coming back from an injury, right? So adaptive excellence tells us - what is the best I can do in this environment? How can I reframe my concept of excellence to this situation? Adaptive excellence is about giving yourself the grace you deserve, to help you become the best you can be. Keep on keepin’ on!If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! A case study of health awareness and injury attitudes amongst tertiary student cellists”They interviewed a group of collegiate cello students in Australia to try and figure out what the perceptions of musician injury and injury prevention are. The impetus for this study was that they saw that medical research in this field has drastically increased over the last 30 years, the number of injuries in musicians, and the prevention practice implementation hasn’t. How could that be? Guess you’ll have to read the study (; Or at least dive into this episode!Keep on keepin’ on and trust the process! If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show! I never wanted to record this...

Send us a textThis episode is dedicated to the memory of my beloved uncle, Major John Lovell (1983-2024). We love you Uncle Johnny Boy, until we meet again. This is the episode I never wanted to record. It is the most raw and blunt I have ever been. I didn’t even edit this the way that I usually do, because I want this to be as real as possible. I didn’t have any notes, nothing. I didn’t want to have to make this episodeBut I realized today that I had no choice. There are people out there who may think that the topics we cover on this show are just for the people who “don’t have their crap together” to put it lightly. Or that the conversations about taking care of yourself, and identity, are just for people who are going through injury. There are people out there who think that the conversation about injury are just for those going through it. Well, IT’S NOTTrust me, you don’t want these topics, this inner work, this self-care to only be relevant when you are picking up the pieces of your career because of an injury. This episode is NOT meant to shame or call out anyone going through an injury. But it IS a loving, but direct message to those of you who are not making the investment in your own health, physical, mental and mindset. My message to you is that YOU ARE WORTH THE CARE YOU NEED Yes, it may take some time away from your normal activities, but it will be WORTH IT. And I don’t want you to only find that out after going through an injury. Keep on keepin’ on, I love you guys. You are worth it.Send us a text here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2271724/open_smsJoin the mission here: https://musicianunchained.com/podcastSign up for our newsletter here: https://musicianunchained.com/newsletterWork with Clark 1-1 here: https://musicianunchained.com/lets-hang-muJoin our FB support group here: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/EWv2LLYFGTYBtnxw/If you are a musician going through injury, a music educator trying to help one, or a musician just trying to make it in life, then you need to listen to EVERY episode of this up and coming show!
