It’s in God’s time.  • Chris’s family – God is working and lives are being changed  • Praise report for Drew’s sister  • Blessings and praise  ---------------------------------------------------Today’s Topic: Keeping the Fire Lit (Part 5)RECAP:  • NEED – Openness to God  • SPARK – Spiritual conviction and encounters with Jesus  • FLAME – Salvation and Christian walk  • ENVIRONMENT – Your surroundings  • FUEL – God’s Word and relationship  • OXYGEN – The Holy Spirit  ---------------------------------------------------6. OXYGEN – The Breath of God and the Holy Spirit  A fire cannot burn without oxygen.  Even a strong flame will suffocate and die if cut off from fresh air.  Sometimes, all a smoldering fire needs is a breath of wind to burst back into flame. The Holy Spirit is the breath of your spiritual life.  It brings conviction, comfort, wisdom, power, and life.  Without it, your spiritual fire dies.  With God, you are alive, strong, and burning bright for Jesus.  When you walk closely with God—breathing in His Spirit through prayer, worship, and surrender—your fire is sustained.  Just like lungs need air, your soul needs the Holy Spirit’s presence daily.  Fellowship fans the flame.  Like coals that burn hotter together, Christian community brings accountability and encouragement.  And don’t forget the blessings of God—His provision, peace, and answered prayers are oxygen to your faith.  They remind you He’s near, He’s good, and He’s working.---------------------------------------------------Scriptures (NKJV):Genesis 2:7  "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being."John 14:26  "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."Romans 8:11  "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,  He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”Hebrews 10:24–25  "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some,  but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”James 1:17  "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,  and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."John 16:26---------------------------------------------------Application:  • Breathe deeply—invite the Holy Spirit to fill you daily  • Stay close to God through prayer, worship, and time in His presence  • Surround yourself with believers who stir your fire, not smother it  • Recognize blessings as oxygen—fuel that increases your faith and joy  • Thank God regularly for His gifts, large and small  • Don’t isolate yourself—you weren’t meant to burn alone  ---------------------------------------------------7. VIGILANCE – Guard the Flame / Discernment  If you leave a fire unattended, it can either burn out or burn out of control.  Vigilance is required to keep it from dying or becoming dangerous.  You must guard your walk with Jesus.  Be vigilant in prayer, study, and spiritual discernment.  Distractions, sin, or apathy can easily smother your fire.---------------------------------------------------Armor of God Connection:Ephesians 6:16  "...taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."Ephesians 6:17  "And take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;"---------------------------------------------------8. DISCIPLINE / RE-USE THE COALS – Keep the Fire Burning  Once you have those hot coals, the fire becomes easier to reignite.  You don’t have to start from scratch. Add fuel and breathe life into what’s already there.  Discipline is the key. Without it, spiritual laziness creeps in and lets your fire go out.Show up daily. Pray, read, worship, and stay in community.  These aren’t routines—they’re kindling.  They keep the fire burning and make it easier to rekindle.Don’t underestimate the power of what you’ve already built with God.  Re-use those coals. Stay disciplined. Keep adding fuel.  Trust that the Holy Spirit will breathe your fire back to life.---------------------------------------------------Key Scriptures:2 Timothy 1:6  "For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands."Romans 12:11  "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."Galatians 6:9  "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."Matthew 26:41  "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."Psalm 51:12  "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."Micah 7:8  "Though I fall, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light."James 1:12  "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."---------------------------------------------------Conclusion:  Keeping your fire lit requires spiritual diligence and divine dependency.  Like a real fire, it must be:  • Fed with Fuel – Read, obey, and live out God’s Word  • Ignited with Heat – Stir up your passion with prayer and worship  • Supplied with Oxygen – Breathe in the Spirit and stay in Christian community  Let’s keep the fire burning together.

#28 Doubting Thomas "More than a lowest moment"

Episode Description:Have you ever been labeled by your worst moment? This week on The Unreligious Podcast, we explore the story of Doubting Thomas—a man known for his hesitation, but remembered by Jesus for so much more.Host Drew Finchum dives into John 20:24–29, where Thomas says he won’t believe unless he sees Jesus with his own eyes. But Jesus doesn’t shame him—He shows up just for him. Jesus invites him: “Put your finger here... Stop doubting and believe.” (v.27). What follows is one of the boldest confessions in Scripture: “My Lord and my God!” (v.28). And the blessing that echoes to us today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (v.29)This episode tackles raw, real questions:Why do we doubt, and what does God do with our doubts? How do we move from shame to grace? What if your lowest moment is where your breakthrough begins? We’ll also look at the full biblical and historical picture of Thomas:John 11:16 – Thomas shows boldness: “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”John 14:5 – He’s honest about his confusion: “Lord, we don’t know where You are going...”John 21:2 & Acts 1:13 – He remains faithful post-resurrection, gathering with other disciples.History says he brought the Gospel to India and was martyred by spear—faithful to the end. You’ll also hear about other biblical “label moments”:Peter denied Jesus (Luke 22:61–62) but became the RockElijah begged to die (1 Kings 19)Sarah laughed at God’s promise (Genesis 18:12)David committed adultery and murder, but was still called a man after God's own heartMary Magdalene (Luke 8:2) was the first to see the risen Jesus (John 20:18)The Woman at the Well (John 4:17–18) helped spark a revival (John 4:39–41)Gideon doubted himself (Judges 6:15), but God said, “I will be with you.” (Judges 6:16)Moses stuttered (Exodus 4:10–12), yet God used him to lead a nationAnd we wrap with this powerful truth:“You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:26“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17Whether you're a lifelong believer, a deconstructing skeptic, or someone burned out on religion, this episode is for you. Tension is at an all time high and the Jews and Pharisees want him dead. He’s basically public enemy #1.The Last Supper – Jesus shares a final meal with his disciples, instituting the practice of communion (Luke 22:19-20).Betrayal and Arrest – Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, leading to his arrest (Matthew 26:47-56)Trials and Sentencing – Jesus is tried before the Jewish Sanhedrin, then taken to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who ultimately orders his crucifixion (John 18:28-40).The Crucifixion – Jesus is scourged, nailed to a cross, and dies after several hours (Mark 15:25-37).The Burial – Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of Jesus, buries his body in a tomb (Luke 23:50-56).The Resurrection – On the third day, the tomb is found empty, and Jesus appears to his followers (Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:11-18).While the core events remain the same, each Gospel provides variations in details, reflecting different perspectives and theological emphases.Crucifixion in Roman Culture1. Purpose and UseCrucifixion was reserved for the worst criminals, slaves, traitors, and rebels—those deemed threats to Roman authority. It was not used for Roman citizens, as it was considered too shameful and cruel for them. The goal was not just execution but public humiliation, ensuring that others feared opposing the empire.2. The Process of CrucifixionA. Scourging (Flogging) Before CrucifixionVictims were subjected to brutal flogging using a flagrum—leather cords embedded with bone or metal.Flesh was torn, muscles exposed, causing extreme blood loss and shock. Many victims died from the flogging alone.B. Carrying the CrossThe condemned carried the patibulum (horizontal beam, 75–125 lbs). This exhausted and humiliated the victim.C. The Crucifixion ProcessVictims were nailed (typically through wrists and feet) or tied to the cross. They were then lifted onto the vertical post.Death usually occurred by asphyxiation due to hanging.Breaking of Legs (Crurifragium): Hastened death by preventing the victim from pushing up to breathe.Spear to the Side: Confirmed death (John 19:34).Jesus and Crucifixion Practices:Jesus was scourged (Matthew 27:26).He carried the cross. His side was pierced.Legs were not broken. The Prophecies Fulfilled by JesusThe Old Testament contains numerous prophecies that Christians believe were fulfilled by Jesus' death and resurrection. These prophecies were written centuries before his birth, and their fulfillment is a cornerstone of Christian theology.Key Prophecies and Their Fulfillment:The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53: 1-12)Verses 1-3: "Why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34)Verses 7-8: Mocked by onlookers (Matthew 27:39-44; Mark 15:29-32)Verses 14-18: "They have pierced my hands and my feet", "They divide my garments" (John 19:23-24)Micah 5:2 – Born in BethlehemFulfilled in Matthew 2:1 and Luke 2:4-7Isaiah 7:14 – Virgin BirthFulfilled in Matthew 1:22-23.5. (10 minutes)PRAYERPART 2: JESUS’S FORGIVENESS IN HIS DARKEST MOMENTBetrayed. Denied. Rejected. Forsaken. Yet, He Forgave.Betrayed by a friend – Judas, one of His twelve disciples, sold Him for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16).Denied by Peter – One of His closest followers, Peter, denied Him three times when He needed him most (Luke 22:54-62).Rejected by His own people – The Jewish leaders and many in the community who once welcomed Him as the Messiah turned on Him.They accused Him of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God (John 10:33).The same crowd that shouted "Hosanna" as He entered Jerusalem later cried out, “Crucify Him!” (Matthew 27:22-23).Instead of accepting the truth, they chose Barabbas, a known criminal, over Jesus (Matthew 27:15-26).Forsaken by God – At His lowest moment, Jesus cried out:“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).This was the fulfillment of Psalm 22, prophesying the Messiah’s suffering.Yet even as He hung there, tortured and abandoned, His response was:“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34).If Jesus could forgive in that moment, how can we hold onto unforgiveness in ours?PART 3: THE COMMAND TO FORGIVEForgiveness = ObedienceColossians 3:13 – "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Matthew 6:14-15 – Jesus says that if we don’t forgive others, God won’t forgive us.Releasing the Offender = Freeing YourselfForgiveness does NOT mean excusing sin.It means giving up the right to seek revenge. It means releasing the offender from the debtIt’s not about fairness—it’s about faith."Forgiveness is for our benefit – it frees us. As Hebrews 12:15 reminds us,  'See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.' Holding onto bitterness only harms us, but when we choose to forgive, we release the burden and walk in God's grace."Forgiveness isn’t saying what they did was okay. It’s saying YOU won’t let it control you anymore.PART 4: GOD'S RADICAL FORGIVENESSBiblical Stories of God Forgiving at Our LowestPeter’s Denial → Jesus’ Restoration (John 21:15-19)Peter abandoned Jesus, yet Jesus met him with love, not condemnation.“Feed my sheep.” Jesus didn’t shame him—He gave him purpose. The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)A son wastes his father’s wealth in sin but is welcomed home with open arms.God isn’t waiting to punish us—He’s waiting to embrace us.David’s Sin (2 Samuel 11-12, Psalm 51)Adultery, murder, deception… yet when David repented, God forgave him. “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51:10)Closing Thoughts (5 minutes)A Final Challenge: Who do you need to forgive today? Not because they deserve it, but because you deserve peace. Not because they’ve earned it, but because Jesus forgave you freely.Reminders:Like, subscribe, and share this podcast with someone who needs encouragement.Email us at [email protected] with questions or topic suggestions.Check out our YouTube channel for more content!Thank You Message:Thank you for joining us for this episode of The Unreligious Podcast. Holding onto bitterness or anger can weigh you down mentally, emotionally, and physically. It does not mean excusing the wrongdoing or forgetting the pain—it means choosing to free yourself from the burden of past hurts.BIBLICAL MEANING OF FORGIVENESSIn Matthew 18:15-17 NKJV, Jesus instructs that if a brother sins against you, you should first go and tell him his fault between the two of you alone. If he listens, you have gained your brother; if not, take one or two others with you, and if he refuses to listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or a tax collector.Forgiveness = Letting go of sinIn the Bible, forgiveness is about releasing others from their debts against us, just as God released us through Christ.Romans 8:1 – "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."Why Is It So Hard to Forgive?Fear of being hurt again.Fear of looking weak.Fear of them not facing justice. It feels like we’re letting them off the hook.Romans 12: 14-2114 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[e] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. But, what if unforgiveness is actually keeping you on the hook? What Happens When You Hold a Grudge? (Science & Health Effects)Increases stress hormones (cortisol), leading to anxiety, depression, and even weight gain.Higher risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.Weakened immune system, making you more prone to illness.Poor sleep, digestive issues, and chronic pain.Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. What Forgiveness Does for Your Body & MindLowers stress and improves mental clarity.Releases dopamine and serotonin, boosting happiness.Strengthens your heart and immune system.Leads to longer life expectancy. The Bible confirms this truth:Proverbs 17:22 – “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Matthew 18:21-35The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down [a]at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you[b]all.’ 30 And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ 34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother [c]his trespasses.”Closing Thoughts (5 minutes)A Final Challenge:Who do you need to forgive today? Not because they deserve it, but because you deserve peace. Not because they’ve earned it, but because Jesus forgave you freely.Reminders:Like, subscribe, and share this podcast with someone who needs encouragement.Email us at [email protected] with questions or topic suggestions.Check out our YouTube channel for more content!Thank You Message:Thank you for joining us for this episode of The Unreligious Podcast. Biblical Foundations for RelationshipsPurity and Holiness:1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 (NKJV):“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.”Commitment in Love:Song of Solomon 8:6-7 (NKJV):“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm;For love is strong as death, jealousy is cruel as the grave; Its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it.”God’s Love as Our Model:1 John 4:9-11 (NKJV):“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who sins sexually, sins against his own body.”Accountability & Avoiding Temptation:1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV):“There has not been any temptation that is not common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”Communication and Mutual Growth:Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV):“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”Go to church togetherPray together Read your bible togetherTransitioning to MarriageTHE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGEMarriage is not merely a legal or formal union but a sacred covenant between two individuals, established by God. Historically—and in many jurisdictions—this covenant has been understood as the union between a man and a woman.Key Verse: Mark 10:6–9 (NKJV)6 But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.7 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,8 and the two shall become one flesh”; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.THE NATURE OF A BIBLICAL MARRIAGEA biblical marriage is a God-ordained institution—a divine covenant—not merely a government contract or a cultural arrangement. Its nature remains constant even though ceremonies may change over time.Key Verse: Genesis 2:18–24 (NKJV)18 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”19 Now out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.21 Then the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.22 And the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.23 Then Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,” because she was taken out of Man.24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.DREW AND CHRIS TALK ABOUT HOW THEY DID IT BACKWARDSCHARACTERISTICS OF A BIBLICAL MARRIAGE FAITHFULNESSA biblical marriage is built on unwavering faithfulness and sacrificial love.1 Cor 13:4-7 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Proverbs 3:3–4 (NKJV)Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, So that you will find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.2 Corinthians 6:1414 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what [communion has light with darkness?PRAYER REQUESTS:Prayerful Reflection:Closing (5 minutes)Reminders:Like, subscribe, and share this podcast with someone who may benefit from it.Email us at [email protected] with questions or topic suggestions.Check out our YouTube channel for more content!Thank You Message:Thank you for joining us for this episode of The Unreligious Podcast. Lack of Spiritual FoundationNo shared faith or spiritual guidance.Prioritizing worldly desires over biblical principles.Disregard for prayer, church, or biblical teachings in the relationship.2. Absence of Love and RespectSelfishness instead of selfless love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 as a contrast).Constant criticism, belittling, or lack of appreciation.Emotional neglect and lack of kindness.3. Poor Communication and Conflict ResolutionFrequent arguments filled with anger and resentment. No willingness to listen or understand each other.Use of manipulation, silent treatment, or passive-aggressive behavior. 4. Infidelity and Broken TrustEmotional or physical affairs.Dishonesty and deceit as a pattern in the relationship.Inability to forgive or rebuild trust. 5. Disregard for Biblical Roles and ResponsibilitiesNo servant-hearted leadership from the husband (Ephesians 5:25).No respect or support from the wife (Ephesians 5:22-24).Viewing marriage as a competition instead of a partnership.6. Lack of Commitment and Covenant MindsetViewing marriage as temporary or disposable.Threatening divorce as a manipulation tactic. No willingness to work through difficulties.7. 20 Therefore“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.By practicing these biblical principles, anger can be resolved in a way that reflects God’s love and brings peace to your life. How This Applies to Anger:Verses 9-10: Anchor your relationships in genuine love.Verses 14-16: Respond to offense with blessings, not bitterness.Verses 17-19: Trust God’s justice rather than seeking personal revenge.Verses 20-21: Conquer anger and hostility with acts of kindness. This passage is like a blueprint for overcoming anger. It’s not about suppressing emotions but transforming our responses through the power of God’s love.Prayerful Reflection:Lord, we acknowledge that anger often consumes us and harms those we love. Forgive us when we allow it to lead us into sin. Teach us to pause, reflect, and respond in ways that glorify You. May Your Spirit guide us to reconciliation and peace, and may we trust in Your justice above our own. Amen. Pet sin is a deeply personal struggle—something we keep returning to even when we know it’s harmful. Both show how broken we are, but both also point us toward God’s endless grace and mercy.Biblical Guidance on Breaking Free:Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”These verses remind us that God’s Word is powerful—sharper than any addiction or pet sin. Through His Word, we find healing, strength, and transformation.Overcoming Addiction and Pet Sins:Addiction and sin rule many of our lives, but they don’t have to. The Bible offers us a roadmap to freedom:Acknowledge the Struggle – We’re all broken, but God’s grace is greater than our sin.Seek God’s Strength – Willpower alone won’t break the cycle. Only through prayer, support, and community can we find lasting change.Embrace the Process – Overcoming addiction and sin is not an overnight journey. It requires perseverance, surrender, and trust in God’s timing.Closing: Join us as we pray for healing and freedom from the addictions and pet sins that entangle us. #8 - Navigating Awkward Church Situations (Part 1)

Episode Summary: How Certain Church Customs Could Make Visitors Feel UncomfortableIn this episode, we dive deep into a topic that many church leaders and visitors alike have likely experienced – certain church customs that, while meaningful to regular attendees, can make newcomers feel uneasy. Whether it's speaking in tongues, dress codes, worship styles, or tithing practices, these elements of church culture might unintentionally alienate visitors. We discuss how practices such as running the aisles, the pressure of repeated offering appeals, prophetic preaching, or being called out as a visitor, can leave guests feeling out of place.Tune in as we explore:Speaking in Tongues: Why this practice might seem confusing or even off-putting to first-time visitors and how to introduce it thoughtfully.Tithing Pressure: How repeated appeals for offerings can make guests feel uncomfortable, and why churches should focus on teaching the heart of giving rather than constant appeals.Worship Styles: From running the aisles to ultra-quiet services, we examine how different worship expressions may feel overwhelming to someone new.Dress Codes & Seating: What it means to be welcoming when it comes to attire and seating arrangements, including the discomfort visitors might feel when expected to sit at the front or adhere to strict dress codes. We also offer practical advice for visitors to prepare for their first church visit and discuss ways churches can make sure their environment is warm, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone.Don’t miss this episode packed with helpful insights for both visitors and church leaders aiming to foster a more welcoming space!#ChurchVisitTips #WorshipStyles #InclusiveWorship #SpeakingInTongues #ChurchOfferings #ChurchEtiquette #ChurchCommunityVernon's Question:Good morning, Can you all cover this topic? How certain church customs could make people visiting uncomfortable? Speaking in tongues, certain outfits, worship styles (like running the aisles, shouting, or even the other way being too quiet, no audience interaction), prophetic preachers, preachers asking for offerings over and over, laying on of hands, snake handling and/or getting pointed out as a visitor when you visit the church. People sitting in the back and making visitors go all the way to the front. Thanks-Vernon-Knoxville, TNHow Certain Church Customs Can Make Visitors Feel Uncomfortable: A Guide to Creating a Welcoming EnvironmentAs a Christian community, one of our greatest callings is to welcome and include everyone, whether they are new to the faith or simply visiting. However, some church customs, while deeply meaningful to regular attendees, can unintentionally make newcomers feel out of place. From worship styles to tithing practices, there are various elements of church culture that, if not handled thoughtfully, could create discomfort for visitors. In this post, we will explore how certain church customs could make people visiting uncomfortable and how we can create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Before You Go to Church: Setting Yourself Up for a Comfortable Experience If you’re planning to visit a church for the first time, it’s important to approach the experience with an open mind and heart. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:Have an Open Mind and Heart:Be prepared to embrace the diversity of worship styles and practices. Everyone’s faith journey looks different, and being open-minded helps you experience the full range of what a church might offer.Research the Church:If the church has a website, take some time to explore it. Find out what denomination the church is affiliated with, as this can give you insight into their theology, worship practices, and overall approach. This will help you feel more prepared and less surprised by unfamiliar customs or traditions.Aligning Spiritually and Biblically:If you discover that you don’t spiritually or biblically align with the beliefs of the church, consider visiting another congregation that is more in line with your convictions. It’s important that you feel comfortable in the place where you worship.Respecting Special Events:If you are invited to attend a special event such as a baptism, baby dedication, or a similar occasion, be mindful of how the church worships during these ceremonies. Even if the practices or style of worship feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable, try not to sow discord. Respect the way they worship, and if you find yourself in a situation that feels “unbiblical” or makes you uncomfortable, politely excuse yourself without causing conflict.1. Speaking in Tongues: Unfamiliar Territory for VisitorsFor many churches, speaking in tongues is a powerful expression of the Holy Spirit’s presence. However, for visitors who are unfamiliar with this practice, it can be confusing or even off-putting if not handled with care.Biblical Reference:"Therefore, if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?" — 1 Corinthians 14:23 (NKJV)Why It Can Be Uncomfortable:Visitors who are unfamiliar with speaking in tongues may not understand its significance or purpose. If tongues are spoken loudly and without interpretation, they may perceive it as chaotic or disruptive. What to Consider:Churches should offer explanations for practices like speaking in tongues, particularly in services where visitors may be present. Providing interpretation or clarifying its role in the service can help newcomers understand that it’s an expression of faith rather than an alienating practice.2. Repeated Offering Appeals: Pressure to TitheWhile giving tithes and offerings is a biblical practice, some visitors may feel uncomfortable if the church repeatedly asks for money during the service.Biblical Reference:"So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver." — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV)Why It Can Be Uncomfortable:Constant appeals for offerings can make visitors feel like they are being pressured to contribute, especially if they are not prepared to give. This may make them feel uncomfortable or self-conscious about their financial situation. What to Consider:While churches need to fund ministry programs and operations, it’s important to be mindful of how offerings are presented. Churches should focus on teaching the heart of giving rather than repeatedly asking for contributions during services. Visitors should be free to give as they feel led, without feeling coerced.

    #5 - Church Hurt (Part 2)

Scriptural Conflict ResolutionHandling conflict scripturally is essential for maintaining healthy relationships within the church. Here’s a biblical approach to resolving conflicts:1. *Address the Issue Privately*:Matthew 18:15 instructs us, "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you." This step emphasizes the importance of addressing conflicts directly and privately before escalating them to others.2. *Seek Understanding*:Approach the situation with a heart of humility and a desire to understand the other person’s perspective. Proverbs 18:2 says, "Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions." Listening is key to resolving conflicts effectively.3. *Involve Others Wisely*:If the conflict remains unresolved, Matthew 18:16 advises us to take one or two others along to help mediate the situation. This ensures that the matter is handled fairly and with accountability.4. *Pursue Peace*:Romans 12:18 encourages us, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Strive for reconciliation and peace, even if it requires humility and sacrifice.Scriptural Remedies for Church HurtSo, how can we find healing from church hurt? Here are some scriptural remedies to guide us:1. *Forgiveness*: Ephesians 4:32 encourages us, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Forgiveness is crucial for healing. It doesn’t mean we condone hurtful behavior, but it frees us from the burden of bitterness.2. *Focus on Jesus*: Hebrews 12:2 reminds us, "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." When we focus on Christ and His teachings, we find strength and encouragement that transcend our experiences with others.3. *Seek Community*: While we may have faced hurt, it’s vital to seek out healthy, supportive communities. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 encourages us, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” Finding a group that embodies Christ-like love can provide healing and support.4. *Consider Finding a New Church*: If your current church community is not aligning with your biblical viewpoint or is causing you more pain than growth, it may be time to consider finding a different church. Look for a community that embraces you and supports your faith journey. Remember, the church is meant to be a refuge and a place of growth, not a source of ongoing hurt.5. *Prayer and Reflection*: Spend time in prayer, asking God to heal your heart and help you process your feelings. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." He is our ultimate comforter.

This can manifest as betrayal, judgment, gossip, or unkindness—often from those we expect to support us in our spiritual journey. Understanding The Difference Between, “Biblical Correction” and “Unbiblical Bias”:Drew seen a post today that perfectly sets this up:A critical distinction to make is between biblical correction and unbiblical bias.*Biblical Correction*: This is rooted in love and guided by scripture. Galatians 6:1 tells us, "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently." This kind of correction aims to restore and uplift the individual, not to tear them down.*Unbiblical Bias*: In contrast, unbiblical bias often manifests as judgment, condemnation, or criticism that lacks grace and compassion. It can stem from personal biases, misunderstandings, or even cultural differences within a church community. This behavior can lead to feelings of inadequacy and hurt, leaving individuals feeling ostracized instead of embraced. —-----------------------------------------------------------------I know of at least 2 affairs that have happened in churches I have attended. THEY COME TO YOU IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING, BUT INWARDLY THEY ARE FEROCIOUS WOLVES”. MATHEW 24:11  ‘AND MANY FALSE PROPHETS WILL APPEAR AND DECEIVE MANY PEOPLE. Vs. 12 BECAUSE OF THE INCREASE OF WICKEDNESS, THE LOVE OF MOST WILL GROW COLD.”I have been to MEGA churches as well as small churches and at least 4 churches with different denominations. That UNCOMFORTABLE feeling when a church or pastor does something you're not sure is actually biblical. How many of us have left a church because we were hurt there or felt they weren't teaching biblical truth?
