Is it Possible to Age-Proof your Brain and Slow Cognitive Decline? With Dr. Majid Fotuhi
Encore: Today I sit down with neurologist and neuroscientist Dr. Majid Fotuhi to unpack the science of neuroplasticity — the brain’s remarkable ability to change, rewire, and grow at any age. He’s adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins and author of the book The Invincible Brain: The Clinically Proven Plan to Age-Proof Your Brain and Stay Sharp for Life. We discuss many things related to his book, from building new connections to strengthening memory-related regions of the brain, to the five pillars of brain health…fitness, sleep, nutrition, mindset and brain training. , Dr. Fotuhi explains why “age-related cognitive decline” and even Alzheimers isn’t as inevitable as we’ve been led to believe. I was particularly intrigued with his concept of "the soup of abnormalities." Why Forgiveness is an Act of Self Compassion. With Diana Winston
Today’s encore episode is with Diana Winston, the Director of UCLA Mindful, Keynote Speaker, Consultant and Author of The Little Book of Being: Practices and Guidance for Uncovering your Natural Awareness. In this interview, we talk about the importance of forgiveness in our lives and why carrying our anger or resentment around with us is like carrying hot coal. Dropping the hot coal gives us more freedom, openness, and joy. It doesn’t mean we have to condone or forget, but it is truly an act of self-compassion.The practices she shares are both practical and powerful. The first step, she says, is to have the willingness to even start working on forgiveness — whether it’s forgiving another person, asking another person to forgive you OR forgiving yourself. None of this is easybut it can make a big difference in our own health and ease. Letting go of these difficult feelings is a great way to shift your mindset and build your capacity to focus on the things that really matter. Living with Less Regret: Tools for Releasing Fear, Finding Courage, Moving Forward. With Margie Warrell
What if the thing holding you back isn’t actually your ability at all… but your FEAR. Today’s guest is Margie Warrell, Leaderships Advisor, Keynote Speaker and Author of The Courage Gap, Five Steps to braver Action. So what is the courage gap?? She describes it as that space between who you are and who you want to be AND how fear quietly fills that space with things that hold us back like perfectionism, people pleasing and that critic in your head that says “I’m not ready yet” or I’m not good enough. Margie shares why even brilliant, capable people get stuck, how to tell the difference between courage and recklessness, and why self-compassion can be a conduit to courage. A Classic Dan Harris Interview about Anxiety and (how to be) 10% Happier. With Dan Harris.
Welcome to Untangle throwback Thursday, This interview with Dan Harris was recorded 10 years ago, one of our first. But it’s pure Dan…big heart and funny sense of humor. And humility. Burnout Recovery Tools: Reduce Stress and Build More Joy In Your Life. With Amy Leneker.
Today's guest is Amy Leneker, Author of Cheers to Monday, The Surprisingly Simple Method to Lead and Live with Less Stress and More Joy. Amy is refreshing, joyful —and deeply practical—in this conversation about stress, burnout, and how to stop living your workweek as a countdown to Friday. My favorite quote? Make more space for joy. Amy shares the wake-up call that changed everything for her, and became her personal turning point. She takes us through the heart of her approach, the Unstressing Method—which includes See, Sort, and Solve—a simple framework designed to help people identify what’s driving their stress, categorize it into actionable types, and choose a clear next step instead of spiraling into overthinking. Something we all know very well. The conversation also tackles why common workplace “solutions” can backfire and how leaders can create cultures of well-being where people feel safe, connected, and able to grow. This all applies to families, as well as the workplace. Most importantly, Amy makes a compelling case for putting joy back on the calendar—not as fluff or denial, but as a real resilience tool. If you’ve ever felt stuck in overwork, people-pleasing, or constant urgency, this episode offers concrete tools to help you reset how you work, lead, and live—starting with Monday.Resource: Amyleneker.comA special thank you to our amazing sponsors: Quince, Rula, Welleco, Strawberry.me, Fabletics. The Science of Revenge: Why Getting Even Feels (so!) Good—and How to Overcome it. With James Kimmel Jr.
Today’s guest is James Kimmel Jr., a former litigator of 20 years, currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale school of Medicine and Author of the book we discuss today called The Science of Revenge: Understanding the World’s Deadliest Addiction—and How to Overcome It (2025).Here’s the question: What if revenge actually works like a drug—lighting up the brain’s reward system and keeping us stuck in cravings for payback? In this episode we talk about the neuroscience of revenge and why it can become compulsive, engaging similar reward pathways to those associated with craving and addiction. James tells the personal story that launched his life’s work—years of bullying, a devastating loss, and a split-second decision that changed everything. We explore how grievances fuel rumination, how self-control can get hijacked under stress, and what it takes to break the cycle. If you’ve ever replayed an old hurt or struggled to let go, this conversation offers a fresh, brain-based roadmap toward healing—including how forgiveness may just be one of the most underused tools for healing and freedom.Resource: https://www.jameskimmeljr.com We hope you’ll check out the muse brain sensing headband at choosemuse.com and use code untangle 15 for your discount.Grateful to our sponsors Quince, Welleco, Fabletica and Strawberry.me.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Hunger Habit: Why We Eat When We're Not Hungry and How to Stop. With Judson Brewer
Today’s Encore episode is with Judson Brewer, a Psychiatrist, Neuroscientist and Author who specializes in the field of mindfulness and addiction. He is widely recognized for his work on understanding the mechanisms of craving and developing effective strategies to overcome addictive behaviors. One of his notable contributions is his research on the "Hunger Habit." He discussed this in his book, The Hunger Habit: Why We Eat When We're Not Hungry and How to Stop. The Hunger Habit is a concept that explores the parallels between overeating and other forms of addiction. Brewer's research suggests that the root cause of many addictive behaviors, including overeating, lies in the craving and reward-based learning processes of the brain.Brewer's approach to breaking the Hunger Habit revolves around mindfulness. He believes that by bringing mindful awareness to our eating behaviors, we can develop a deeper understanding of our cravings and make more conscious choices. Mindfulness allows us to observe our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations without judgment, enabling us to break the automatic and unconscious patterns of overeating.Overall, Judson Brewer is known for bridging the fields of mindfulness, neuroscience, and addiction, offering a unique perspective on breaking free from addictive patterns and fostering behavioral change through these mindfulness-based interventions.Want more from Judson? What if, instead, it’s important information and an invitation to better understand ourselves. She gives us a practical look at why fear runs the show for so many of us, and how to change that. She unpacks the somatic nature of fear, why our nervous systems can treat “little fears” like “big fears,” and how our protective patterns get wired over time. She shares how to approach our inner critic (She named hers “Gretchen”), how to separate intuition from fear, and why courage is often just fear properly directed. This episode is packed with tools, reframes, and real-world examples to help you meet fear with curiosity instead of avoidance, and return to what matters most.Resource: Fourage.io. Oprah’s Life Coach: Finding Purpose, Integrity and Emotional Healing. With Martha Beck
Today’s encore episode is with Martha Beck, a PhD, Harvard-trained sociologist, world-renowned coach and New York Times bestselling author. She has published nine non-fiction books, one novel, and more than 200 magazine articles. She’s also known as Oprah’s Life Coach . Her most recent book, The Way of Integrity, Finding Your Path to Your Your True Self, is an Oprah book club selection and a NY Times best seller. In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a process that anyone can use to find a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a way to be free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us— negative habits and patterns, too much people pleasing, staying in stale relationships or careers— happen because we are out of touch with our true nature. This signals a split from integrity — which very often is unconscious and fueled by cultural norms and traditions that lead us in directions that aren’t, in fact, right for us. Getting back in sync with what is true for us brings us into alignment and this is where we become our best selves. Meditation has been a huge part of her own process in bringing her life into integrity. Tapping into the Unknown. Exploring What We Can’t See. (If you like the Telepathy Tapes, you’ll LOVE this). Suzanne Giesemann
Today we’re joined by someone whose life journey challenges everything we think we know about reality, consciousness, and what happens after we die. My guest is Suzanne Giesemann, a former U.S. Navy Commander and aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—someone who once lived firmly in a left-brained, evidence-driven world. After the sudden and tragic loss of her stepdaughter, Suzanne experienced a profound shift that led her to explore the nature of consciousness and the afterlife. What began as personal grief turned into a mission that has since helped millions find healing, meaning, and peace. Today, Suzanne is an evidence-based Medium, Spiritual Teacher, and Author who bridges the gap between science, spirituality, and personal experience. In this conversation, we explore what mediumship really is, how consciousness extends beyond the physical body, and how connecting with loved ones—and with a deeper sense of awareness—can transform grief into growth. Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or simply curious, this episode invites you to question reality and open yourself to the possibility that we are far more than we imagine. If you like the Telepathy Tapes, you’ll love this conversation. As always, we’re untangle, the podcast from Muse the brain sensing headband designed to train your brain and help you find more focus. Forget Traditional Doctrines! A Skeptical Buddhist Shares his Practical Philosophy. With Stephen Batchelor
Throwback Thursday Encore: I listened to Ezra Kleins NY Times Opinion podcast the other day as Ezra interviewed one of my favorite Buddhist authors, Stephen Batchelor. It reminded me that I’d interviewed Stephen in 2016 and loved chatting with him. His philosophy is timeless, so I thought I’d encore it today. Stephen is a Scottish Buddhist teacher and Author known for his secular or agnostic approach to Buddhism. His focus is on experience, ethics, and human flourishing over traditional doctrines like karma and rebirth. He was previously a monk in the Tibetan and Zen traditions before developing a more skeptical, and pragmatic buddhist approach, detailed in his earlier books like Buddhism Without Beliefs and Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist. His current book is called Buddha, Socrates, and Us: Ethical Living in Uncertain Times. We don’t cover this here since our interview is from 2016…but I’m looking forward to reading the new book. What Does it Mean to Live a Good, Meaningful Life? Despite the (really) Hard Stuff. With Kieran Setiya.
Wow…I loved talking to today’s guest, Kieran Setiya, an Author and Professor of philosophy at MIT. I’ve always loved philosophy, but I was especially taken with the way Kieran applies it to our most challenging events, as well as to our day to day lives. In his book Life Is Hard, How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way — he offers us a roadmap for navigating rough terrain, from personal trauma to loneliness to grief to failure and the myth of the ideal life to injustice and even the absurdity of the world. It’s hard to summarize this discussion because there’s so much here, but his wisdom is rich with guidance on how we can face suffering and life’s inevitable hardships. He’s so eloquent in how he shares his insights on life >> from his rich archive of philosophy to his own personal journey. Life is a collection of small successes and small failures. And A good life, he says, is a way of living every day, DESPITE the hard stuff. He inspired me to reflect on quite a bit here. How do I live well, what makes a life meaningful, how do I face regret, aging, uncertainty…even what should I hope for given where I am in my own life. He was originally inspired to philosophy by his own sense of wonder and undertow of worry at 7 yrs old. I love that…a blend of worry and wonder, anxiety and awe. How perfectly true!!Kieran is also the author of Midlife: A Philosophical Guide. His writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, The New York Times, the Boston Review, the London Review of Books, The Atlantic, and The Yale Review. As always, we’re Untangle, the podcast from Muse, the brain sensing headband dedicated to unlocking your brains potential. Grace, Gravity and Growing Older. Accepting All of Who We Are. With Parker Palmer
A Favorite Encore. Today’s guest is one of my favorites of all time. When I first interviewed Parker Palmer, the writer, teacher, poet and all around wise and soulful human — it was near a birthday that was giving me some pause as I was feeling the weight of time passing. I felt such a rush of pure humanity from listening to his words. It was the best birthday gift. The book we discussed is called On the Brink of Everything: Grace, Gravity, and Getting Old. It’s one of 10 amazing books that he’s authored. He says we must accept all of who we are…our wholeness and our brokenness. Wholeness involves integrating your imperfections along with whatever degree of perfection you may have achieved. It means embracing brokenness as an important part of our lives. It all belongs. I loved when he said that our hearts stay supple when we learn to embrace the little heartbreaks of everyday life. Eventually, he says, we can say...Yes, I am my strengths and my weaknesses. I am my successes and my failures. I am a source of light and I can be dark. It's all there. Welcome it all as a part of being human. Parker has reached millions worldwide through his books, including the best-selling Healing the Heart of Democracy, Let Your Life Speak, The Courage to Teach, and A Hidden Wholeness. He also holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley and 13 honorary doctorates. He has won numerous awards, which are listed in our show notes. Encore Episode. SPECIAL OFFER: The Meditation Studio App is now FREE for 30 days. What makes a Happy, Fulfilling Life? Lessons From the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. With Dr. Robert Waldinger
This was such a fun interview — our encore guest today is Dr. Robert Waldinger, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a practicing Psychiatrist, Zen Master and author of the book The Good Life, Lessons from the Worlds Longest Scientific Study on Happiness. This study, which began in 1938, reveals what it takes to build a good life. What does that exactly mean, I wondered…fulfilling, satisfying, meaningful, happy? All of it. There's no one size fits all. BUT…the one thing that was consistent? Relationships. All kinds of relationships. The quality of the social connections that we make throughout our lives means everything. He says…Human connection is our superpower. Good relationships help us get through life’s inevitable challenges, and they keep us happier and healthier. and the research shows that they actually help us to live longer. Robert reminds us that we should pay attention to the things that we really care about…the things and people that energize us. AND pay attention to the things and people that deplete us. He shares the keystones of healthy relationships — things like safety security, emotional closeness, fun and relaxation, learning and growth…and there’s more.
