your career is not your personality (and that’s a good thing)

I'm diving into one of the biggest mindset shifts you can make in your career: separating who you are from what you do. Your job is important, but it’s not your entire identity - and learning to detach the two can actually make your career (and life) better. As I'm navigating this as well - we're covering how to detach your self-worth from your job title, the importance of building life goals that exist outside of work, reframing career pivots as growth opportunities, and more. This is your reminder that your career is just part of the story — not the whole thing.Links + Resources:📖 Order my book We’re Human. don't conform. stand out.

how many of you hate public speaking? I thought I hated speaking out in front of people. growing up, I was quiet and shy and just accepted that. until... in one of my classes at university the professor came in on the first day to discuss the class and explained that the entire course is all presentations, except for one final paper. so 85% of my grade was based on my ability to speak in front of my class. OMG. horrible. but LET ME TELL YOU that it came as a big shock to me...that when I stood in front of the class, I felt calm and at peace. the talent tug-of-war

has anyone checked on the economy lately?! she's having a tough time imo. let's dive into the current economic challenges facing job hunters and employers. employees are looking for jobs that match their skills (and wants) and employers are looking for employees that match their business...how can that create such a disconnect? learn how to navigate the tough dynamics of recruitment and retention, tackle employer offerings and employee expectations, and how you can prepare for the future. equip your business (and yourself!) with the tools to thrive in an evolving economy! -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @emswhynot / @em.thinkhr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

beyond the mic: writing my first ever book

as if being a podcast host wasn't enough for me...i'm writing a book. "we're human. not resources." is coming fall or winter of 2024. this book is all about challenging misconceptions in human resources, viewing human resources from a human's perspective, and providing a fresh perspective in the workplace. i go over the book writing process and how it relates to staying true to yourself in the face of pressure, and ensuring that you embrace individuality in your career and in your life. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @emswhynot / @em.thinkhr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

the generational gap: how individuals show up to work and how they work

i'm a gen z and i bring a unique perspective on work and workplace culture. not everyone will agree with what i say or what i present. i'm constantly met with doubts, frustration, and stereotypes. i think there's a lot to learn about different generations, and gen z specifically has learned a lot about generations before them...which is why they are the way they are. i discuss and dissect the differences between the work ethics/attitudes and stereotypes of boomers, gen x, millennials and gen z. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @emswhynot / @em.thinkhr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

how getting rear-ended opened my eyes to how we need to approach HR

when I talk about starting my business, my usual short story is that I tried all the other industries and in each one, I always tried to get involved in HR. but the reality is, it’s about how I was treated, the experiences I had, the bosses and co-workers that made me see the unjust, outdated bullshit that is “human resources” and “dream workplaces” and “work-life balance.” this episode goes over one of my co-op work experiences...the defining one of my career. essentially...a long-winded explanation of how I realized that holding people accountable, standing up for yourself and just being a good person was hard to find. but it wasn't until this work experience happened that I realized I wouldn’t let any of it go by anymore without saying something. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

Katie from KDB Law has joined the chat! we took the time to dive into her story of fulfilling her dream job as a kid (spoiler: lawyer) and starting her own law firm (while she overcame fear AND people pleasing). we cover some incredible and innovative strategies to create a positive and engaged workplace, the value of a multigenerational team, embracing employees' strengths and challenges, and prioritizing support and self-care. their focus at KDB Law is: Humanizing the Experience of Law (how cool is that?!). one down-to-earth business (and owner!) in Stratford, Ontario, that you MUST get to know. -- LINKS: Find Katie: IG: @kdblaw Website: https://www.kdb.law/ Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

how i overcame my fears on a 3 day solo camping trip (and you should too)

after coming back from a 3-day solo camping trip...I've had some realizations. overcoming your fears = underrated. oooting your own horn = also underrated. living your life in fear and worry = not worth it. you know I'm the queen of saying "yolo" but the more I say it, the more I believe it. this is our one life. i'd rather spend it overcoming fears, pushing boundaries, and trying new things, than living in fear, worry, or stressing over imaginary scenarios. whether that means talking to your boss, going solo camping, or walking around in the dark - do it. and hype yourself up after you do.

  32. 32

    reminder: take your PTO

it's easy for me to sit here and chat about taking time off right? i own my own business, i set my hours, i'm taking my first-ever solo camping trip this weekend. that doesn't mean that you can't. your paid time off (PTO) like vacation, sick days, and personal days... is part of your entire compensation package. if you aren't using them fully, you aren't getting paid fully. that's the reality of it. i discussed how to take time off, the best way to do it, a little self-check-in, and how taking a short-term leave helped bring me clarity. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

    know your worth; negotiation tactics

It's time to take charge and get what you deserve. Whether you're eyeing a raise, craving more vacation days, or negotiating a job offer, remember that knowing your worth isn't just a mantra—it's essential! In this episode, I'm lifting the curtain on past jobs and how much money I made at each one, what steps to take to ask for more (money, vacation, etc.), sample wording to use, and always some extra tidbits of advice to take you to the next level. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

job applications...the bane of my existence

Let's be super clear here. There's an obvious power imbalance when it comes to applying to jobs and I am NOT here for it. This episode tested my ability to be calm, cool, and collected, and frankly, I like it. I didn't start this podcast, business, etc. to be the cute Gen Z co-worker (although I totally am) - but to challenge the status quo. I'll discuss how I think you should apply for jobs with how you represent yourself on your resume, cover letter, etc. (with examples of how I have recently), and how companies using AI software are probably missing out on some incredible candidates. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

    work for yourself...not someone else

DISCLAIMER: I’m not asking you to uproot your career or family and start your own business. Throughout this episode I want you to determine what "balance" means to you. What “working for yourself” means to you.  There is no perfect equation that solves it for every single person. It's not always about having weekends off, or not taking on that one extra project. Too often we find ourselves 3 years into a job, with no boundaries, a lack of motivation, and the inability to complete work on a Friday afternoon. This episode will teach you some strong habits to create and sustain throughout your career that focus on working for yourself and not others. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

life is more important than just looking forward to the weekend

Season 2 Episode 2. Who am I with this organized podcast?? Back again with another weekly episode. This one gets a little sentimental, even though I totally didn't plan on it. We all know I'm the bachelorette when it comes to jobs. Trying every single one I can. After recently leaving another role, it puts me at 13 jobs in 7 industries by the age of 26. But like who's counting?? This episode dives into whether dream jobs exist or not, my cold hard truth, AND that you can define what the heck your career looks like. xoxo Emily -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

    From LinkedIn Hater to LinkedIn..."Lover"?

Oh LinkedIn...how I loathe you. Well...maybe. My first interactions with LinkedIn were the same as most, scrolling through celebration after celebration of new jobs, promotions, moving, etc. and as an 18-year-old who had no idea what to do with her life, it SUCKED. After some time, lessons learned, and niches discovered, I've seen LinkedIn in a new light, and I want to share that with you. We'll go over my story (short, sweet, and to the point as always), and I'll teach you a couple of ways to make LinkedIn a resource in your job search, not just another social media platform to scroll when bored. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/

How often has "I hate my job" come out of your mouth in the last few months? Or "I hate my boss?" Promotions are GREAT. I LOVE PROMOTIONS. Unless they're sneaky, or don't offer you what you were expecting. We all love a good pros and cons list, and that's what I'm covering in today's episode. All you need to know about promotions to make sure you are covering your ass. Gen Z in the Workplace: Myth vs. Fact

Yes - stereotypes and biases are real. No, they don’t appear out of mid-air. I encourage you whether as a Gen Z or as a millennial, Gen X, Boomer, etc., to remove those judgments and  “flip the script.” Instead of looking at items as “challenges” or “problems,” look at them as “opportunities” or “areas to improve on.” Instead of “making assumptions,” put yourself in someone else’s shoes to see where they’re coming from. Let’s tackle the Gen Z workforce in four quick myths vs. facts. -- LINKS Find Emily: IG: @think.hr Website: https://www.thinkhr.ca/
