Accidentally Adulting

Let's face it, adulting doesn't come with an instruction manual. Join Kath and Erin as they Accidentally Adult their way through their late 20's and chat about all things personal growth - but with less self-help books and more shit-talking with your BFFs.

The highs and lows of internet dating

Gone are the days where you could only meet the love of your life in a bookstore. Today, dating has hit the internet (or more realistically, the apps) and the girls are here to share their thoughts! As two people who have dabbled in the art of Tinder (et al), Kath and Erin chat about the misconceptions and tribulations of online dating, touching on their best and worst first dates - including the time Erin got catfished by Ben from Takapuna.

  2. 22

What the heck are my core values?

Finding your core values may seem a bit wishy-washy, but bear with us because knowing what they are is more important than you might think! In today's episode, Kath and Erin chat about what core values actually are and give you a super simple 5 minute exercise to work out what yours might be. So why should we bother defining them? Core values kinda inform every decision you make and by knowing what's important to you, you can avoid going down the wrong path (or ruining your life if you're dramatic like Erin).  Check out accidentallyadulting_podcast on instagram for more content and drop us a review!

    Playing the victim

“Playing the victim” is a phrase that we’ve all heard of, but how many of us are willing to admit that we have totally been there and done that? In today’s episode, Erin and Kath chat about why making yourself the victim in every story is even more damaging to you and the people around you than you might think it is. And hey, we get it – it's human nature to want to have a moan sometimes, but assigning yourself the role of the hard-done-by gets old pretty quick. It’s all about self-awareness, friends!

    Community vs. competition

We all have that friend who’s always ‘one upping’ you - ya know, the one who lets you know they’ve had waaaay less sleep than you after your hectic night at work, or just happened to run 0.2mm further than you during the cardio session. Needlessly competitive, right? This week the girls talk Community vs. Competition - touching on their experiences of fostering community in a competitive environment and reflect on how they make other people feel. Are you in your lane? Are you the backseat driver? Or are you the Ford Ranger over-taking the other cars (but always getting to the location at the same time)?   * Disclaimer * Kath talks car metaphors and if you drive a Ford Ranger be prepared to feel personally attacked.

    Hedonic adaptation

Ever wondered why people who win the lotto end up being as happy as your average Joe? The answer is hedonic adaptation. Sounds fancy, right? Join Erin and Kath as they explore and simplify this concept.  Plenty of yarns are spun around how we all adapt to events and how we can make ourselves that tiny bit happier.  If you take nothing else from this episode, you’ll leave with a bloody good fact for your next awkward work function.

    What even is adulting?

What even is adulting? Join Erin and Kath as they ponder what adulting is, why we've got it all wrong, and why we get unreasonably excited about air fryers and vacuum cleaners (don't lie - we know you do too). And if that wasn't enough to get you hooked - we asked our listeners what Accidentally Adulting means to them, and me oh my did they come up with some good answers!

    15. Living life in the slow lane

In this episode, we chat with Laura who’s been living the slow life for the last couple of years. Laura has a korero about her whānau’s decision to move away from the hustle of the big city and move into the slow lane by the beach. We explore the idea of ‘turning down the noise’ to ensure you’re living your life based on your values and needs. We discuss the ‘slow movement’ and how that can look for different people because not everyone is going to be sippin' their kombucha by the beach to have a carpe diem moment. The misconception that slow living is lazy is busted and debunked. So, grab yourself a kombucha, beer or a non #sponsored coffee and tune in.

    14. How I save money and manage my low income

MONEY! We all love it, but some of us don't love talking about it. Erin does not happen to be one of those people. Tune in to today's episode which will serve as the first in what we are sure will be many money chats. This is your chance to be nosy and find out what a PhD student's financial situation is like,  but also how money can impact your mental health and ability to participate in life. Erin shares her top 6 tips (not financial advice) on how to manage on a low income. This is a great episode to listen to if you have a low income, are intending on having a low income (maternity leave, anyone?), or if you are saving for a big goal. And hey, even if you are rolling in the moolah - this is a great episode to gain some perspective and learn how to support people with a less flashy bank account than yourself.  To reiterate - this may come as a surprise but we are not qualified to give financial advice, so please don't take this episode as such.

    13. Pink Tax (#FPT)

Have you ever wandered down the supermarket aisle and wondered why "women's" shampoo costs so much more than "men's" shampoo? The answer to that, my friends, would be Pink Tax. In today's episode, Erin gets fired up about the marketing scheme that 'justifies' why women pay 7% more per item on average than men. We talk about why Pink Tax isn't really a tax, how much on average you are paying towards Pink Tax over your lifetime (!!!), and why companies are getting away with it. Tune in to today's episode to learn about the price of stool softener, the many uses of men's shampoo, and what the heck we are talking about when we say "Shrink it and Pink it" #FPT

    12. Re-evaluating friendships and making friends as an adult

Remember being a five-year-old and proudly stating that you have three friends? Well, things change when you’re an adult and making friends can be difficult. In this episode, we are joined by our bestie Emma to discuss re-evaluating and making friendships as an adult. We’ll encourage you do a “stock-take” of your current friendships which might make you realise that your bestie status with “Toxic Tim” or “Lazy Lucy” might have come to a natural end. Whether you’re feeling like you might need some new mates, or are already pursuing new friendships, we’ll give you some tools to help create some positive connections. And remember, new friends bring new opportunities, but in order to be friends with the kind of people you want in your life, you have to become that kind of person first.

  12. 12

    11. Burnout

Are you feeling burnt-out? Burnout is a big buzzword at the moment so we thought it was about time we stopped talking about talking about it, and actually talked about it. In today's episode, Kath and Erin deep dive into what burnout is, where it comes from, what to look out for, and how to deal with it. Don't forget - you can still burnout doing what you love, and misidentifying stress for burnout is a very common, but very slippery slope. Tune in to hear Erin mispronounce more names, receive your learning outcomes for the week, and find out how 'burning the candle at both ends' is more dangerous than you might have thought. And remember, if you do find yourself in a position where you need someone to talk to, you can free call 1737 at any time for support from a trained counsellor (NZ only).

    10. Supporting a friend through a breakup

Aghhhh break ups, there’s thousands of podcasts on how to deal with them but not many on how to support a friend going through a break up. In this episode, we reflect on our breakups and discuss the do’s and do not’s when supporting your bestie through this time. We discuss why you shouldn’t tell your friend “there are plenty of fish in the sea” and remind you that your friend doesn’t need a new fish, because hey, they might want to date a shark! We chat about how you can build your friend back up (feed the fish) and show them how to reframe a shitty situation. And added bonus - by being a good mate to your friend, you'll see your friendship (and even your life) get 10x better on the other side.

    9. Being a bombass bestie to people starting their parenting journey

Babies. Some of us love them, some of us aren't so keen on them but chances are you're going to have some friends who have them (or are planning on having them). In todays episode, Kath and Erin sit down with the lovely new mumma, Dani, and chat about her journey through deciding to have a baby, pregnancy, being a new parent, and how we can be supportive friends throughout the process. We discuss some do's and don'ts, some faux pas to avoid, misconceptions, and why frozen meals will absolutely get you brownie points with the new Mum's and Dad's in your lives. If you want to be a bombass bestie to the up-and-coming parents in your lives, as well as the coolest illegitimate aunty or uncle to the new bubs, this podcast is for you!

    8. Changing careers (the great resignation)

Get yourself a drink and settle in for WTFISY from changing careers. In this episode we'll yarn about the global phenomenon known as the great resignation and explain why hundreds of thousands of people have #quittheirjob since the COVID-19 pandemic started. You'll hear all about Erin's childhood dream of being a volcano and why you shouldn't have to stick to your chosen career.  Along the way we'll talk about why you shouldn't be afraid of changing careers or jobs, and how the pandemic has given more power to employees. If you don't finish this episode feeling a little tipsy and confused about the difference between an employee and employer, did you even listen?

  16. 8

    7. Toxic productivity

Buckle up, guys, gals, and non-binary pals, we are in for a long one! In today's episode, we chat about productivity and it's not-so-cool counterpart; toxic productivity. Don't get us wrong - being productive and getting sh#t done is great, but not when it is at the expense of your short-term and long-term health and performance. If you are anything like us (and we bet you are, given you're listening to this episode), you may also be guilty of putting too much on your plate, and feeling the need to always be "on" - hellllooo toxic productivity.  Listen in to hear us continuously call ourselves out, learn how to spot toxic productivity, why taking time 'off' makes you a better person, and how to break the cycle. Because after all, the last thing we want to be doing this festive season is stressing over starting side hustles, how many social events we are attending, or how fast our knitting is progressing.

  17. 7

    6. Decision fatigue

In today's episode, we dig into WTFISY from making decisions. We get it, making a decision can be tough - whether it's a little decision like what to have for dinner, or a big one like which cryptocurrency to invest in. So why can it be so difficult to make a choice? Listen in to hear us unpack what decision fatigue is, why it happens, who it happens to, and how to counter it. We explain why the Lynx Africa gift set is the perfect example of decision fatigue, and how Steve Jobs and Barack Obama have nipped decision fatigue in the bud. So click play and listen to this episode - because that's at least one less decision you'll have to make today!

  18. 6

    5. Making your changes stick (motivation vs. discipline)

In today's episode, we cover WTFISY from making your changes stick. Vague title, right? Basically - we chat about motivation and discipline, the differences between them, and why you need both to make or break a habit. Listen in to find out how to successfully eat 40 hotdogs, which cousin at Christmas dinner you are, and how to change your life in 21 days. Because after all, who doesn't want to be the person who makes their changes stick?

  19. 5

    4. Self-love and self-care (it's not all face masks and bubble baths)

In this weeks episode, we dive into what the fu#k is stopping you from practicing self-love and self-care. This is not a fluffy episode where we'll be talking about face masks and bubble baths, so don't tune out just yet. Today we will discuss the difference between self-love and self-care and the misconceptions surrounding the topic. We'll drop in some research on the topic and lay out the common barriers to practicing self-love and self-care. Along the way you'll question your own self-talk and leave motivated to show up for yourself. You'll probably finish the episode wondering why Erin and Kath keep saying "shakaz brah" and will be relieved to hear the end of the road bike saga. So join us in this kōrero and let's get going because after all - WTFISY from practicing self-love and self-care?

    3. Tall poppy syndrome and celebrating success

In today's episode, we deep dive into why it is so hard to celebrate your own and other peoples successes. That's right, we are talking about Tall Poppy Syndrome *groan*. We've all done it, and we've all had it done to us - but why do we do it and where the fu#k is it coming from? Tune it to hear Erin butcher some Greek names, find out how crabs are like poppies, and learn why you're most likely to experience Tall Poppy Syndrome within your peer groups. And because we love to have those confronting conversations, we'll give you some tips and tricks to use if you are being subjected to Tall Poppy Syndrome, and what to do when you are being the party pooper. So join us in calling ourselves and each other out on this outdated cultural phenomenon, because WTFISY from celebrating success?

    2. Why not start working on yourself now?

Get ready - today's topic is a gritty one! In this episode, we chat about catalysts for change and why you shouldn't wait for them. Kath and Erin touch on the events lead them to 'tune in' (you'll have to have listen in to get that one - hint hint) and why they started working on themselves. And we feel ya, working on yourself isn't easy, but it's important and you shouldn't wait for life to give you lemons before starting on the journey. So join us in this korero and let's get going because after all - WTFISY from starting now?

    1. We're being bold and so can you

In our first episode, we chat about our journey into starting this podcast and break down some of the barriers we faced along the way. We introduce some key concepts ~ what is a taboo topic? What's the difference between a changeable and a manageable barrier? Why does Kath keep talking about a road bike? ~ and we lay the foundation for what you can expect from future episodes. We are SO excited to have you on this lil adventure with us and can't wait to have those confronting convos.

Trailer. What the fuck is this all about?

WTFISY is all about personal growth; but with less self-help books and more sh#t-talking with your BFF. Each week, we will unpack another taboo topic and get up close and personal to the barriers stopping us from being who we want to be. Let's be each others catalyst for change - because life giving you lemons shouldn't be the only reason to start working on yourself. We will be having confronting conversations and calling ourselves, each other, and society out on its bullsh#t excuses that stop us from doing the things we want to do. So, what the fu#k is stopping you?
