  5. Ghost rail harmonics

Old rail steel found alongside railroad tracks was played percussively as well as some wooden logs. These haunting metallic and organic harmonics were played and recorded and granularized and digitally obliterated and combined with other sounds, other train sounds, and modular synthesizer.…

  6. Industrial Duress

Train sounds, modular synthesizers, and mandola paint a picture of a journey taken under duress; a less-than-finely-tuned machine loping through the night to eventually arrive at its destination, more or less intact.

  7. Acoustic Dispatch

I've had an exceedingly difficult time getting off the ground this FAWM. Various struggles getting in the way. But I managed to put this together. It's kinda weird instrumentation: train sounds, radio, mandola, talking drum, synthesis, sampling. My first attempt at playing talking drums (or...

  8. Stretching Away Interminably Feat. Mkd

My final track for FAWM 2019, this one features harp! I wrote and recorded a viola part, which I sent to mkd, who recorded some harp parts. I ran those sounds through my eurorack for pitch shifting, granular processing, phaser, crazy modulated reverb, and sophisticated, modulated delay. Some...

  9. An Intrusion Of Unmediated Knowledge Part I

Part 1 of a 5-part suite of granularized, glitched, drone ambient/neoclassical music. The only sound sources are viola and mandolin, recorded via a Shure SM-57 mic. The sounds were manipulated in real time by Kurt Zemlicka.

  10. An Intrusion Of Unmediated Knowledge Part II

Part 2 of a 5-part suite of granularized, glitched, drone ambient/neoclassical music. The only sound sources are viola and mandolin, recorded via a Shure SM-57 mic. The sounds were manipulated in real time by Kurt Zemlicka.

  11. An Intrusion Of Unmediated Knowledge Part III

Part 3 of a 5-part suite of granularized, glitched, drone ambient/neoclassical music. The only sound sources are viola and mandolin, recorded via a Shure SM-57 mic. The sounds were manipulated in real time by Kurt Zemlicka.

  12. An Intrusion Of Unmediated Knowledge Part IV

Part 4 of a 5-part suite of granularized, glitched, drone ambient/neoclassical music. The only sound sources are viola and mandolin, recorded via a Shure SM-57 mic. The sounds were manipulated in real time by Kurt Zemlicka.

  13. An Intrusion Of Unmediated Knowledge Part V

Part 5 of a 5-part suite of granularized, glitched, drone ambient/neoclassical music. The only sound sources are viola and mandolin, recorded via a Shure SM-57 mic. The sounds were manipulated in real time by Kurt Zemlicka.

  14. The Dissolving Frontier Between Viola And Not - Viola Part IV

This track is part of a four-movement piece recorded with Kurt Zemlicka. The *only* sound source in this piece is viola. No oscillators, samples, nothing like that. Granted, the viola sounds are delayed, pitch-shifted, granulated, reversed, comb-filtered, and otherwise manipulated. The viola part...

  18. Dividing Surfaces

My first song for FAWM 2019; this year I've rented a viola and I'm doing an album centered around it. Viola recorded by clip-on contact mic into looper pedal, then routed into into Eurorack effects: Xaoc Kamieniec phaser, mutable instruments clouds, pittsburgh filter. Various modulation by Maths....

  19. Everything is ours

My 14th (and last!) song for FAWM 2018, for the Eating Cars score. I've had this chromatic melody that forms the basis of this floating around in my head for a few weeks now and I was glad I was able to put it to use. Also heavily used string synth through eurorack modular filter and phaser, with...

  20. Maybe this is best for her (reprise)

Revisiting an earlier theme, or maybe this will be the earlier scene (a preprise?), but in a more twisted, unsettling way. All the sounds here are piano, some played normally, and some played manually with fingers or mallet, directly on the strings.

  21. Do you know who these people are?

Several layers of drones to serve as general background as part of my score for Eating Cars.

  22. Some sort of peace

This scene contains a denouement of sorts with odd reactions to even weirder sequences of events. This one has a brighter tone in contrast with the rest of the score, but definite layers of tension as well.

  23. Maybe this is best for her

From my score for the movie "Eating Cars." This scene is dealing with the aftermath of much tragedy, and the strongly mixed emotions that accompany it. This track is more stripped down than the rest of the score thus far, it loses some interest without the story but still conveys the mood.

  24. Duality Of Light And Dream (with Geoff Cox)

Featuring the incredibly gifted Geoff Cox on tenor sax, this explores a combination of ambient and jazz that has interested me for some time, but I had not had an opportunity to work with an artist like Geoff before. I had put together a very simplistic song bed (just some pads) and sent it to...

  25. Mystic's Longing (with Sean Brennan)

Something very special this time, here is a track I worked on with Sean Brennan from the FAWM site. I laid down some synth layers and he sent me a wonderful viola solo to go with it, very much has a raga feel to it. I love the deep tone of the viola, and Sean's performance is fantastic. My 14th...

  26. The Rapture Of The Deep

It rises rapturously, in fits and starts from the depths. This track is centered around a lapsteel chord progression/melodic line that's been flowing through my fingers for a while that needed to become a song. Surrounding it are Prophet 08 pads and some modular drones/bassline. Sara VCF used in...

  27. Divination by rustling leaves

What can we learn from rustling leaves? Some say they are the footsteps of god. Several layers of ebow guitar drones (acoustic, electric, lapsteel) as well as synth drones and sequences and acoustic and electric solos, swells, and strumming. My 12th track for FAWM 2017

  28. Unholy Conduit

A connection to a place you've never been and should probably never go. Short piece utilizing modular synth drones and modulated filtered noise, plus improvised lapsteel ebow over the top. Effects include Zoom MS-70CDR and VallhallaRoom. My 11th track for FAWM 2017.

  29. Mirror in mirror

Week 2 of FAWM the official challenge was "transform a classical piece." I didn't do it then, and I have been regretting it, so here we have my electronic take on "Spiegel Im Spiegel" by Arvo Pärt. It's a gorgeous piece and I don't really feel that I did it justice, but I do think this is a…

  30. Standing On The Edge Of Your Own Existence

My 9th track for FAWM 2017. I realized that at the rate I'm going I'm going to have a stupidly long album so I need to do some more short tracks. This one is just electric guitar and Prophet 08, with software effects (Eventide Blackhole, Izotope Trash, Arturia MiniFilter).

  31. Overcome With Ecstatic Effulgence

Featuring layers of modular synth, plus electric guitar processed by Mutable Instruments Clouds and ValhallaShimmer reverb. Dedicated to my divine wife, Sarah, this song attempts to convey the awe, wonder, and intense light she brings to me, as my shining beacon of hope. This is my 8th FAWM song…

  32. It Hides Itself Even As It Is Revealed

The more you glimpse, the less you understand, as it is mysterious and incomprehensible and occluded by other things blocking your view. I used the looper in my Eventide Timefactor, which I've only used a few times before. I finally used acoustic guitar on this one, though it's processed by a BBD...

  33. The Entrancing Aroma And Luminosity Of The Flickering Sanctuary Lamp

Living drones, atmosphere creating a sacred space with mysterious drips punctuating the flickering aura. Pure sonic exploration, including experiments with the new-to-me Sara VCF, a unique dual filter with opposing poles that also sounds wonderful. Drips courtesy of Pittsburgh Filter being pinged...

  34. Seized By Cometic Patterns

Feeling the influence of comets. My 5th track for FAWM 2017, this features guitar heavily processed with effects pedals and heavily modulated Mutable Instruments Clouds, which also plays some percussive parts. Other modular synth parts and Prophet 08 pads/drones/filter sweeps provide additional...

  35. Tokens of the Divine

A taste of something from beyond the earthly realm. This is my third track for FAWM 2017, and this one is mostly electric guitar, with modular drones and Prophet 08 pads running throughout.

  36. Techno Album track 01

A bit of techno, more upbeat than my usual stuff. I'm hoping to make a whole album in this kind of style. Hybird hardware/software/modular techno with beats from Arturia Spark LE. Mutable Instruments Clouds on the background part. Korg MS-20 mini lead. Modular bass. Novation Ultranova pads.

  37. Cyclic Ambient3 Modular Qunexus Ms20 Ultranova

Sequenced using Cyclic software sequencer. Lead played with Qunexus controller on Pittsburgh Modular synth box -- allowing sort of vibrato, only applied to the filter. Very expressive. Drone and LPG percussion running through Clouds for some otherworldly sounds. Ultranova pad sound. Eventide...

  38. 14 Violin Drone Solo Clouds Remix

A "remix" of sorts of my last FAWM track using the Mutable Instruments Clouds module

  39. 14 Violin Drone Solo

My 14th (and last) song of February for February Album Writing Month (FAWM) 2016. I'm feeling contemplative tonight so I laid down some drone work and improvised some loose violin soloing over it, as well as an improvised harmony synth line (MS-20 Mini) that interacts with the violin part. Some...

  40. 13 Violin Lpg

Abstracted, rhythmic violin and synth sounds playing against one another and an ambient atmosphere. The plucky sounds are a violin, played arco (with the bow), run through one channel of a Make Noise Optomix LPG which is gated by an Arturia Beatstep. A Wiard Anti-oscillator lays through the other...

  41. 12 Seq Violin Ep Big Space Creek

Another blissful violin/synth ambient track, violin sounding through layers of reverb, sequenced synth counterpoint, droning accompaniment. All flowing across a recording I made at my favorite creek. Sequenced Synth: Pittsburgh Modular Synth Box Sequencer: Korg SQ1 Drone: Pittsburgh bender +…

  42. 11 Violin Big Space

A very slow, free flowing ambient track featuring violin run through reverb, then through modular synth (filtering, S&H bit reduction), then two more reverbs. Additionally, a low drone sound comes and goes. For this, the MS-20 mini tracks pitch and, slewed by Maths, controls the pitch of a Wiard...

  43. 10 Space Ambient Violin2

3/4 Time. C Minor. Violin swimming in pads and sequences.

  44. 06 Valentine's Day Violin For Sarah

Now for something a bit different -- in light of Valentine's day I wanted to write a song for my lovely wife, Sarah. This one I wrote out completely with notation before performing it on violin and synths. I recorded the violin on this one with a Blue Bluebird mic. Reverb is a combination of...

  45. 05 Violin Phaser Arp

Layers and layers of violin, pads, analog synth arpeggios and bass. Arpeggios: stereo panned minibrute and microbrute run through Eventide Timefactor delay. Bass: Pittsburgh modular synth. Pad: Novation Ultranova. Reverb: ValhallaRoom.
