The Sleep Mistakes Keeping Women Tired, Anxious and Ageing Faster

Sleep is the foundation of every other health intervention, yet it's often the first thing we sacrifice. In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with sleep researcher Dr Jemma King, author of Sleep First, to explore why women are significantly more likely to experience poor sleep, how disrupted sleep accelerates ageing, and the practical changes that can dramatically improve your health. Dr King explains why sleep isn't simply about getting enough hours. It's about getting the right type of sleep at the right time. From the critical deep sleep that repairs your body and cleans your brain to REM sleep that regulates emotions and fear, this conversation unpacks the science behind why sleep influences almost every aspect of physical and mental health. They also discuss why women are particularly vulnerable to sleep disruption through hormonal changes, stress and the invisible mental load many carry, and why so many women wake feeling exhausted despite spending enough time in bed. If you've ever wondered whether your wearable is helping or harming, whether melatonin is worth taking, why alcohol wrecks your sleep, or whether you can ever catch up on lost sleep, this episode has the answers. In this episode you'll discover: Why sleep is the most powerful biohack for long-term health and longevity Why women experience significantly more sleep disturbances than men The connection between sleep, hormones, anxiety and menopause What actually happens during deep sleep and REM sleep Why the two hours before midnight are so important for brain repair The science behind your brain's nightly "cleaning cycle" Why poor sleep affects mood, memory, decision-making and relationships How sleep deprivation changes the way other people perceive you Why waking tired despite eight hours in bed isn't normal The surprising link between poor sleep and dementia risk Why sleep apnoea is often overlooked in women How alcohol, caffeine and sugar sabotage sleep quality The truth about sleep trackers and when they become counterproductive What supplements actually have evidence behind them—and which don't The risks of using melatonin incorrectly Whether blue light glasses really work The impact of phones, social media and late-night news on sleep The ideal bedroom temperature for restorative sleep Why consistency matters more than sleeping in on weekends Whether you can really "catch up" on lost sleep CONNECT WITH DR JEMMA KING Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.jemma.king/  LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-jemma-king-phd-76013328/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BiopsychAcademy  Website: https://jemmakingbio-pa.com.au/  Buy her book: https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/jRW90M   PREORDER MY NEW BOOK! The Woman Who Trained for Mars Shares Her Longevity Blueprint

What can preparing for a mission to Mars teach us about living a longer, healthier life on Earth? In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra Alagic sits down with sustainability expert, researcher, extreme adventurer and astronaut candidate Dianne McGrath to uncover the extraordinary lessons she's learnt from spending eight years preparing for a one-way mission to Mars. From circumnavigating the globe by yacht to training with NASA medical teams, Dianne has spent decades pushing the limits of human performance. But rather than focusing on space, this conversation explores something much more relevant to every woman: how to build resilience, preserve your health through midlife and create a life filled with purpose. Dianne shares the practical biohacks she adopted to prepare for the physical and mental challenges of space—including optimising sleep, preserving bone density, building muscle, improving mental resilience and testing different nutrition strategies—and explains why many of these same principles are essential for women navigating perimenopause and beyond. Together, Azra and Dianne explore why curiosity may be a key longevity tool, why comfort can quietly hold us back, and how challenging what's considered "normal" can transform the way we age. Whether you're fascinated by space exploration or simply want practical strategies to help you live well longer, this episode will leave you thinking differently about your own potential. In this episode you'll learn: Why curiosity is one of the strongest drivers of longevity The three pillars NASA uses to prepare astronauts—and how you can apply them to your own life Why purpose is essential for healthy ageing The surprising similarities between preparing for space and navigating menopause How Dianne trained her mind to build resilience under extreme conditions Why strength training is non-negotiable for women over 40 The overlooked importance of sleep for longevity and recovery How Dianne tested Paleo, Keto and Carnivore diets using blood biomarkers Why personalised nutrition always beats following the latest trend The importance of preserving bone density before menopause How to build resilience by stepping outside your comfort zone Why challenging what society calls "normal" could change your health forever Practical ways to cultivate curiosity, adaptability and purpose at any age CONNECT WITH DR DIANNE MCGRATH Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_damcgrath/  Website:  https://www.diannemcgrath.com.au/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/diannemcgrath/  HELP US SPREAD THE WORD! Everyone's Talking About Peptides. Here's What Women Need to Know

Peptides are everywhere right now. From anti-ageing and glowing skin to muscle preservation, injury recovery and weight loss, they're being hailed as the next frontier in health optimisation. But are they really the miracle solution many claim them to be? In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with peptide educator and former founder of one of Australia's largest peptide clinics BIOV8, Ted McGill, to separate fact from fiction. Ted is now the CEO and Founder of MediHealthcare and SEVYN. Together, they explore what peptides actually are, why they've become so popular, the growing interest among women, and the critical safety considerations that often get overlooked. You'll learn why peptides are not a replacement for healthy lifestyle habits, how they may support recovery, skin health, cognition and healthy ageing, and why the source of your peptides matters more than most people realise. This conversation also dives into the exploding grey market, the risks of unregulated products, the realities of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, and the questions every woman should ask before considering peptide therapy. Why Sauna Could Be One of the Most Powerful Longevity Tools for Women

We've all heard that saunas are "good for you". But is sitting in the heat actually doing something meaningful for your long-term health — particularly as women move through perimenopause and menopause? This week on the Biohackher Podcast, I sit down with integrative medical practitioner and sauna researcher Dr Joy Hussain for a deep dive into the science of sauna and why heat exposure may be one of the most underrated tools for women's longevity. From cardiovascular health and dementia prevention to hormone regulation, stress resilience and hot flushes, Dr Joy unpacks what's really happening inside the body when you step into a sauna — and why the benefits go far beyond relaxation. We explore why sauna acts as a form of "good stress" for the body, how it supports thermoregulation (something many women struggle with in midlife), and what the research is beginning to reveal about its role in healthy ageing. Dr Joy also breaks down one of the biggest questions in wellness right now: infrared or Finnish sauna — does it actually matter? In this episode, we cover: • What medically happens inside the body during sauna exposure • Why sauna may support cardiovascular health and longevity • The fascinating link between sauna, menopause and hot flushes • Can sauna help reduce dementia risk? • The role of heat exposure in nervous system regulation • Why women may respond differently to sauna than men • The truth about sweating, detoxification and microplastics • Breathwork in the sauna — are we missing an untapped longevity tool? • Sauna vs exercise: can heat mimic some of the same benefits? • Infrared vs Finnish sauna — the pros and cons of each • The most common sauna mistakes that can make it unsafe • Who should be cautious with sauna use and why personalised protocols matter If you're curious about longevity, women's health, hormones, nervous system regulation or simply whether your sauna habit is doing what you think it is — this episode is for you. Listen now and discover why heat might be one of the most powerful tools we have for living well longer. How FemTech Is Changing the Future of Women's Health

For decades, women's health has been underfunded, under-researched and often misunderstood. But a quiet revolution is underway — and technology is at the centre of it. In this episode of The Biohackher Podcast, Azra Alagic sits down with Lindsay Davis, founder of the FemTech Association Asia, to unpack how FemTech and artificial intelligence are reshaping the future of women's healthcare — from fertility and menopause to personalised medicine, diagnostics and prevention. But with innovation comes big questions. Can AI actually improve women's healthcare outcomes? What happens to our privacy and personal data? Is bias already being built into the systems designed to help us? And can technology ever replace the human element of medicine? Lindsay takes us inside the rapidly growing FemTech movement in Asia, sharing why women's health innovation is finally gaining momentum, where the biggest opportunities lie, and why closing the women's health gap requires more than just new apps and wearables. They also dive into the realities female founders face when building health businesses, why funding for women's health still lags behind, and what must change if we want a healthcare system that truly works for women. If you've ever wondered where women's healthcare is heading — and whether technology could finally help bridge the gap — this conversation is for you. In this episode, we cover: • What FemTech actually is — and why it matters • How AI is already changing women's healthcare • The opportunities and risks of AI in women's health • Bias, privacy and inclusivity concerns in healthcare technology • Why women have historically been underrepresented in medical research • How personalised health data could improve care outcomes • Why education and community matter in navigating health technology • The biggest gaps still facing women's healthcare globally • Why funding women's health could create the biggest ripple effect • Advice for female founders building businesses in health and wellness • The rise of FemTech across Asia and what Australia can learn Connect with Lindsay Davis: LinkedIn: Lindsay Davis Website: femtechassociation.com If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, leave a review and share it with a woman in your life who deserves better healthcare. The Longevity Superfood No One Is Talking About (And Why Women Need It)

What if one of the most overlooked longevity tools for women has been hiding in plain sight for billions of years? In this episode of the Biohackher podcast, Azra sits down with algae expert and founder of EnergyBits, Catharine Arnston, to unpack the science behind spirulina and chlorella — and why these tiny green tablets might be one of the most underrated tools for women's energy, brain health, muscle preservation and healthy ageing. If you're in perimenopause or menopause, struggling with fatigue, brain fog, cravings, poor recovery or stubborn energy crashes, this episode explores the cellular and mitochondrial reasons why — and whether algae could be the missing link. Catharine explains why women over 40 experience a "perfect storm" of mitochondrial decline, how hormones impact cellular energy, and why nutrients like chlorophyll, protein and antioxidants may matter more than ever for longevity. You'll also hear the science behind why spirulina and chlorella have been studied for everything from metabolic health and inflammation to detoxification, sleep, muscle maintenance and cardiometabolic health. We cover: Why Catharine calls algae the "first biohack on earth" The surprising reason women lose energy in midlife What mitochondria actually do — and why they matter for longevity The menopause–mitochondria connection Why women experience more brain fog, fatigue and cognitive decline Spirulina vs chlorella: what's the difference? How algae may support energy, focus and blood sugar stability The role of algae in muscle preservation and healthy ageing Why protein becomes increasingly important for women in midlife The science behind chlorophyll and cellular health Could algae help support detoxification and toxin burden? Mold, heavy metals and environmental toxins — what the research says Why sleep, recovery and bowel health matter for longevity How Catharine personally uses spirulina and chlorella daily Whether algae can support cardiometabolic health and healthy ageing Why some professional athletes use spirulina and chlorella for performance and recovery About Catharine Arnston Catharine Arnston is the founder and CEO of EnergyBits and one of the leading educators in algae nutrition. After her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, Catharine began researching alkaline nutrition and discovered spirulina and chlorella — a discovery that changed the direction of her life. Since then, she has spent more than 17 years researching algae, speaking on its benefits and helping translate the science into practical health strategies. He Quit Being a Monk to Create a New Way to Heal Trauma

What happens when a man spends seven years as a monk chasing enlightenment… only to walk away and question everything he was taught? Azra sits down with former monk and trauma educator, Matthew Zoltan, to explore his extraordinary journey from shearing sheds in rural Australia to monastic life in India and Australia — and the pivotal experience that led him to leave it all behind. Matthew opens up about becoming a monk at just 18, why he walked away from conventional spirituality, and how his own lived experience shaped a radically different perspective on trauma, healing and the body. Did you know that autoimmune conditions affect women at nearly four times the rate of men? In this eye-opening episode, host Azra Alagic sits down with functional medicine health coach Jo Brownlow to unpack why autoimmunity is on the rise, why women are disproportionately affected, and — most importantly — what you can actually do about it. From Guesswork to Precision: The Rise of AI-Driven Health

We're generating more health data than ever before… But are we actually healthier? In this episode, I sit down with Jasmine Smith, CEO of Rejuve AI, to unpack what's really happening at the intersection of artificial intelligence, personalised health, and longevity. Because behind the sleek wearables and endless tracking apps is a much bigger question: Who actually owns your health data — and who is it really serving? Jasmine brings a rare insider perspective from both healthcare systems and AI development, revealing why most of today's health data is fragmented, underutilised, and in many cases, benefiting companies more than individuals. We go beyond the hype to explore what AI-driven health actually looks like in real life — from personalised protocols and real-time feedback loops to the emerging ability to run your own "N=1" longevity experiments. But this conversation isn't just about optimisation. It's about power, ownership, and the future of how we make decisions about our bodies. We also dive into: Why more data isn't automatically leading to better health outcomes The behavioural gap — and why knowing what to do still isn't enough How AI could radically accelerate longevity research and clinical trials The ethical tension between data monetisation and personal health agency Why most health tech still isn't truly built for women The shift from standardised medicine to deeply personalised care And what it will actually take to move from reactive healthcare to proactive healthspan optimisation One of the most compelling ideas? That your health data — when fully leveraged — could become one of your most valuable personal assets. But only if it's working for you. This episode will change the way you think about your data, your doctor, and your daily decisions. Because the future of health isn't about more information. It's about precision. The Silent Signals Women Are Missing Before a Heart Attack

Heart disease doesn't always arrive the way we expect—especially for women. It's not always the dramatic, chest-clutching "Hollywood" moment. More often, it's subtle. Easy to dismiss. Fatigue you explain away. Breathlessness you ignore. A quiet signal your body is sending… that no one has taught you to recognise. In this episode, I sit down with leading cardiologist Dr Ross Walker to unpack why so many women are still missing the early warning signs of heart disease—and what's driving this disconnect. We go deep into the biology, the blind spots in modern medicine, and the everyday habits quietly shaping your long-term cardiovascular risk. Because the truth is—most heart disease doesn't start in a hospital. It starts years earlier, in ways most women never see coming. 🎧 Episode Chapters 00:00 — The Question That Changes Everything Is modern medicine making us healthier… or just better at managing disease? 01:45 — The Prevention Gap No One's Fixing Why we're still reacting to disease instead of stopping it early 04:30 — The 5 Keys That Determine 80% of Your Health Simple, overlooked, and rarely followed 08:10 — Why Most People Ignore Their Health (Until It's Too Late) The psychology behind self-sabotage 12:00 — Stress: The Hidden Trigger Behind Heart Attacks Why your risk can spike dramatically in moments of stress 16:30 — The Different Types of Stress Damaging Your Heart Emotional, physical, chemical—and why they all matter 20:30 — Why Women Experience Heart Disease Differently The symptoms that don't fit the "textbook" 24:20 — The Silent Signals Women Are Missing Fatigue, breathlessness, and subtle warning signs 28:00 — Menopause & The Sudden Shift in Risk What changes after 35—and accelerates after menopause 32:10 — Cholesterol: What You've Been Told Is Incomplete Why total cholesterol means very little 36:40 — Inflammation: The Real Driver of Disease? The Menopause Brain Fog Fix No One Is Talking About

If you've ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went there, lost your train of thought mid-sentence, or felt like your brain just isn't working the way it used to, this episode is for you. In this conversation, I sit down with Lauren Dewsbury, who is currently completing her PhD in brain health and dementia risk reduction, to unpack the emerging research on creatine for brain fog, mood, sleep, and cognitive resilience in midlife women. Most of us have only ever heard creatine spoken about in the context of the gym to support muscle, strength and performance. But the science Lauren is exploring goes far beyond that. We talk about why menopause is not just a hormonal shift, but a major neurological transition, and how changes in oestrogen can alter the way the brain produces and uses energy. That's where creatine becomes so interesting. Lauren shares how this simple, accessible supplement may help support memory, word recall, emotional regulation, sleep-deprived cognition, and the mental sharpness so many women feel slipping during perimenopause and post-menopause. We also go deep into her Australia-wide clinical trial currently studying creatine in post-menopausal women with subjective cognitive decline and elevated dementia risk. CHAPTERS 00:00 – Why creatine for the brain, not just muscle 01:31 – How creatine supports cognitive function and ATP production 04:11 – Why menopause is a neurological transition 08:24 – Is HRT enough for brain fog and cognition? 10:15 – Why post-menopausal women with cognitive decline are the focus 11:45 – Can creatine help reduce future dementia risk? 13:14 – The global impact of menopause-related brain fog 16:02 – Why workplaces need to better support midlife women 18:16 – Inside Lauren's clinical trial: what cognition markers she's measuring 20:48 – Creatine for emotional regulation and mood 22:20 – How creatine helps after a bad night's sleep 23:59 – Why women may respond better to creatine than men 26:52 – Why midlife women may benefit more than younger women 28:40 – The brain-muscle longevity connection 30:22 – What to look for in a creatine supplement 32:02 – The biggest creatine myths: kidneys, bloating, and "gym bros" 34:30 – Brain health dosing: 5g vs 10g vs 20g 38:09 – How participants qualify for the trial 40:26 – Why the study is Australia-wide and fully remote 42:21 – What positive findings could change for women's healthcare 43:24 – What women can do right now for brain fog 49:11 – Final thoughts: should every midlife woman try creatine? Are You Truly Resilient… Or Just Running on Trauma?

What high-achieving women need to know about nervous system safety, burnout, and the trauma stored in the body In the biohacking world, we often talk about optimisation—better sleep, sharper focus, hormone balance, longevity protocols, and peak performance. But what if the real foundation of all of it isn't discipline… it's safety? In this deeply important conversation, Azra sits down with Cate Zoltan, co-founder of Quiet Retreats, Undo app, and practitioner in body-based, trauma-informed meditation, to unpack the difference between true resilience and nervous system overdrive. Together, they explore why so many high-achieving women mistake drive for strength, when in reality it may be a trauma response rooted in unresolved fear, grief, burnout, or chronic stress. This episode dives into how trauma lives in the body, why traditional meditation can sometimes feel activating rather than calming, and how body-based stillness may be the missing link in healing. If you've ever felt like you can't switch off, constantly override your body, or wear resilience like a badge of honour while secretly feeling exhausted—this conversation will land deeply. ABOUT CATE Cate Zoltan is an entrepreneur and wellness innovator with more than 25 years' experience across wellness, hospitality and technology. The co-founder of Quiet Retreats and the Undo app she works at the intersection of longevity and mental health. Her body-first approach to wellbeing through Natural Meditation is informed by decades of personal practice and trauma recovery. Cate advises Boutique Luxury Hotels & Spas on silence-led wellbeing to support deep renewal and preventative health. CHAPTERS 00:00 — Why nervous system safety comes before optimisation Azra opens on grief, trauma, and why no protocol lands when the body doesn't feel safe. 01:06 — Why traditional meditation didn't work Cate shares the personal moment she realised conventional meditation wasn't resonating. 03:32 — The body-mind connection and how trauma lives in the body How physical pain, deep tissue work, and unresolved memory patterns led to body-based healing. 07:24 — Why meditation starts in the body, not the mind The key distinction between thought-based meditation and feeling-based stillness. 11:22 — Body scanning vs true embodied meditation Why technique can sometimes keep people disconnected from what they actually feel. 14:19 — Why people sit for hours in body-based meditation The surprising reason stillness becomes something the body craves rather than resists. 18:25 — What to do when meditation brings up overwhelm or trauma How people move through the "stuck" point when painful sensations arise. 21:59 — True resilience vs nervous system overdrive A must-listen section for high-achieving women who pride themselves on pushing through. 26:27 — Is ambition sometimes a trauma response? The hidden role of drive, distraction, and suppressed emotional memory. 31:35 — Why most people have forgotten how to listen to the body Azra shares trauma statistics and why stillness can feel threatening. 33:04 — When fear in meditation is actually trauma resurfacing Cate explains why the body remembers distress long after the mind moves on. 38:30 — Are there different degrees of trauma? A nuanced conversation around childhood trauma, fear, shame, and emotional memory. 43:35 — How silent retreats create a safe space for healing What makes trauma-informed retreat environments so effective for nervous system repair. 47:00 — What it feels like when the body finally feels safe The emotional reward of facing sensations without the story.   CONNECT WITH CATE ZOLTAN LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cate-zoltan/  Website: https://bit.ly/4upNOuM https://www.undoapp.com/  JOIN OUR LIVE WELL LONGER WOMEN'S BIOHACKING RETREAT 1–6 May 2026 | Revīvō Wellness Resort, Bali Live Well Longer Retreat has been named Group Retreat of the Year 2025 by the prestigious Destination Deluxe Awards. DNA Repair, Cancer & the Ageing Switch: Dr Derek Richard on the Future of Longevity

What if the reason we age isn't simply "getting older," but a biological switch that deliberately turns down our DNA repair systems around midlife? In this mind-expanding conversation, I sit down with longevity researcher Dr Derek Richard to unpack the emerging science behind DNA damage, inflammation, cancer risk, and why age itself remains the number one driver of chronic disease. We explore the provocative idea that many of us begin to downregulate key DNA repair pathways around age 40, while centenarians may never experience this switch at all. Dr Richard shares the breakthrough research behind human SSB1, the guardian of genomic integrity, and the biotech work underway to develop a therapeutic that may help switch DNA repair back on. We also go deep on: the DNA damage–cancer connection why ageing is still not classified as a disease rapamycin, metformin, NAD, NMN and the longevity supplement debate the role of lifestyle versus therapeutics why healthspan—not just lifespan—is the real goal If you've ever wondered whether we can truly influence how we age, this episode will change the way you think about your biology. Are We Addicted to Stress? The Truth Most Women Ignore

Women are exhausted and they think it's because they're doing too much, but what if it's more about what's happening in our minds?  In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with mindset coach, author and host of The Life of Greatness podcast, Sarah Grynberg, for a conversation about stress, burnout, and the silent beliefs that keep women stuck in cycles of overdoing and under-nourishing themselves. Sarah shares the story of her own turning point — walking away from a high-pressure media career after burnout forced her to confront a difficult truth: everything in her life looked successful from the outside, yet it felt deeply misaligned on the inside. They discuss the psychology of stress, why so many of us unconsciously stay in it, and the belief Sarah sees most often keeping women trapped: "I'm not enough." Together, Azra and Sarah explore the deeper drivers behind burnout, why boundaries feel so hard to set, and how midlife often becomes the moment women finally stop and ask: Is this actually the life I want? This episode is a powerful reminder that living well longer isn't just about physical health. It's about learning how to step out of the stress patterns we've normalised and building a life that feels aligned, purposeful and deeply energising. Comfort is killing us (and why doing hard things can improve our healthspan)

We've built a world designed for comfort — climate-controlled homes, sitting for long periods of time, ultra-processed food, instant gratification, endless scrolling. And it's quietly destroying our health. In this episode, Azra sits down with functional Functional Medical Pracitioner Richard Game to unpack why modern life is biologically mismatched to our evolution and how doing hard things might be the ultimate biohack for longevity, stress resilience and cognitive health. From gut dysfunction and burnout to VO₂ max, peptides and preventative full-body MRIs, this conversation goes deep into what it really means to live well longer. From Burnout to Purpose: Why Inner Work Matters

What if burnout isn't a failure of discipline — but a failure of alignment? In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with wellness architect and retreat founder Damian Chaparro for a deeply honest conversation about burnout, purpose, emotional fitness, and why most people are chasing longevity in completely the wrong way. Damian shares his unconventional journey from corporate tech into the wellness world, the imposter syndrome that followed him across industries, and the moment he realised that no amount of optimisation could fix a life that felt disconnected from meaning. Together, they explore why true longevity has far less to do with supplements and far more to do with how you relate to yourself, your work, and your inner world. This is a conversation about unlearning, not adding more to your wellness stack. In this episode, we explore: Why burnout is often driven by misalignment, not overwork The belief patterns that quietly run productivity, perfectionism and self-worth Why emotional fitness is foundational to longevity — and why most people avoid it The difference between wellness as escape versus wellness as regeneration How retreats create change when habits and hacks fail The hidden cost of "success" when purpose is missing Why inner work is the most underrated longevity intervention A simple 20-minute daily reset that actually works How to stop letting fear-based beliefs dictate your career, health and life decisions Key takeaways: You can optimise your biology and still feel exhausted if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode Productivity driven by fear, anger or "not good enough" beliefs eventually backfires Longevity isn't about doing more — it's about removing what's weighing you down Sustainable change happens when perspective (your "lens") shifts first Wellness tools work best after inner alignment, not before Why this episode matters: If you've ever felt successful on paper but depleted in real life… If you're doing all the "right" things but still feel off… If you suspect that another supplement, habit or protocol isn't the answer… This conversation will land. It's not about abandoning ambition, it's about redefining what a well-lived, long life actually looks like. 🎧 Listen now and rethink what longevity really means. Protein, Gut Health & the Longevity Equation with Sarah Di Lorenzo

In this episode of Biohackher, Azra sits down with Australia's most loved clinical nutritionist, Sarah Di Lorenzo, for a no-nonsense conversation about food, protein, gut health, menopause, muscle, and why so much mainstream nutrition advice is failing women — especially as we age. Sarah shares insights from decades in clinical practice, working with everyone from women in menopause to patients on the brink of serious chronic disease. Together, they unpack why the Western diet is driving insulin resistance and disease, why women are under-eating protein, and how gut health plays a central role in hormones, metabolism and longevity. This is a grounded, practical conversation about eating well without extremes, why what worked in your 30s stops working in midlife, and how to build a body that supports you for decades to come. In this episode, we explore: Why food truly is medicine — and why nutrition doesn't need to be complicated The hidden ways the Western diet drives chronic disease Why gut health sits at the centre of hormone balance, metabolism and longevity The real reason belly fat appears during menopause Why women are chronically under-eating protein — and how much you actually need How muscle mass protects your metabolism, bones and independence as you age The truth about protein, weight gain and "bulking up" myths How menopause symptoms are often worsened by under-fueling, stress and poor sleep Why what worked before menopause no longer works — and how to recalibrate The role of exercise, muscle and movement in staying out of aged care Reframing ageing as freedom, strength and self-respect — not decline Sarah also shares real clinical stories — from reversing advanced metabolic disease to helping women rethink menopause, body composition and what a healthy body actually looks like later in life. 🎧 Listen now and start building a body that supports you for life. PEMF Therapy Explained: The Science of Cellular Energy

In this deep-dive episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra is joined by PEMF expert Candice Johnston, founder of BEST CELLF, to unpack the science, safety, and real-world benefits of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy — particularly for women. PEMF is one of the most researched yet misunderstood biohacks in the longevity space. Together, Azra and Candice cut through the noise to explain how PEMF works at a cellular and mitochondrial level, how it differs from harmful EMFs, and why it's showing such promising results for energy, sleep, pain, bone density, inflammation, nervous system regulation, and healthy ageing in women. If you've ever felt curious but sceptical about PEMF, this episode gives you the science-backed clarity you need. What You'll Learn in This Episode What PEMF therapy actually is and how it mimics the Earth's natural electromagnetic fields Why PEMF is not the same as EMF, and how to tell a high-quality device from a risky one How PEMF supports cellular voltage, mitochondrial function, and ATP production The role of PEMF in fatigue, burnout, brain fog, and low energy How PEMF influences microcirculation, nitric oxide, inflammation, and pain pathways The powerful evidence behind PEMF for bone density, joint health, and post-menopausal women How PEMF supports sleep quality, deep sleep, and nervous system regulation through brainwave entrainment Practical protocols: how often, how long, and when to use PEMF PEMF for athletes, high performers, travellers, and biohackers Common myths and misconceptions about PEMF (and what the science really says) Key Topics & Timestamps What is PEMF therapy? Gut Health, Hormones & Longevity: Why Your Microbiome Shapes How You Age

Did you know your gut plays a critical role in your overall healthspan? In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with Dr Craig Haifer, clinical gastroenterologist, microbiome researcher and one of Australia's leading voices bridging medicine and preventative wellness, to unpack why gut health is the master regulator of ageing, hormones, immunity and inflammation. From bloating and brain fog to menopause, mood and longevity, this conversation goes far beyond "eat more fibre" — diving into the real science of the gut–brain–hormone axis and what women need to know to age well. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why the gut is the control centre of the body — influencing immunity, hormones, mood, metabolism and ageing The underrated estrogen–gut connection and how your microbiome acts like a natural form of hormone therapy Why bloating isn't always about food — and how pelvic floor dysfunction and "gut flow" play a major role The surprising reason many gut issues begin in adolescence, not adulthood Why restrictive diets (including long-term low-FODMAP) can backfire — and how to think about diet like a prescription How stress, sleep and the nervous system shape your microbiome more than most supplements What centenarians' guts reveal about healthy ageing and longevity microbes The truth about probiotics vs prebiotics — and why feeding your own gut ecosystem matters more than chasing trendy strains What gut hypnotherapy is, how it works, and why it's backed by clinical trials The science behind faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) — from inflammatory bowel disease to cancer and longevity research Why you can't "supplement your way out" of a poor lifestyle — even with cutting-edge microbiome therapies Key takeaway Your gut isn't just about digestion — it's a dynamic ecosystem that talks constantly to your brain, hormones and immune system. Supporting it isn't about extremes or detoxes, but about flow, fibre, nervous system regulation and sustainable habits that help you live well longer. About Dr Craig Haifer Dr Craig Haifer is a specialist gastroenterologist at St Vincent's Public Hospital in Sydney and runs a busy private practice at St Vincent's Private Hospital. In addition to his clinical work he is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UNSW where his team explores how the microbiome influences disease and how interventions like diet, probiotics, and FMT can enhance outcomes, particularly when combined with traditional pharmaceuticals and immunotherapy.  Dr Haifer completed his PhD at The University of Sydney, focusing on the gut microbiome and faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). He led national FMT guidelines and has overseen the world's first clinical trials using capsule based FMT for ulcerative colitis and in patients receiving cancer immunotherapy.    Dr Haifer's research has received over $2 million in funding and is published in top journals including Nature, Gut, and The Lancet: Gastroenterology & Hepatology. A strong advocate for holistic care, he integrates psychology, exercise, meditation, gut hypnotherapy, and nutrition into treatment. He is a regular speaker in the wellness industry where he endeavours to bring the medical and wellness worlds closer together.   CONNECT WITH DR CRAIG HAIFER INSTAGRAM: @drcraighaifer   LINKEDIN:https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-haifer/ JOIN OUR LIVE WELL LONGER WOMEN'S BIOHACKING RETREAT 1–6 May 2026 | Revīvō Wellness Resort, Bali Live Well Longer Retreat has been named Group Retreat of the Year 2025 by the prestigious Destination Deluxe Awards. How to achieve extreme wellness

What if the most powerful biohacks for longevity weren't supplements, devices or expensive treatments — but stillness, water, heat, cold and rhythm? In this episode of the Biohackher Podcast, I'm joined by one of Australia's true pioneers in integrative medicine and wellness, Dr Marc Cohen — medical doctor, professor, researcher, poet and founder of Beautiful Water. Dr Cohen introduces his powerful philosophy of Extreme Wellness — not about pushing harder, but about using intentional contrast to find balance, resilience and deep homeostasis. We explore why stillness may be the ultimate biohack, how hot and cold therapy activates detoxification and stem cells, why water quality matters more than we realise, and how simple, accessible daily practices can profoundly improve longevity, immunity and nervous system regulation. This is a conversation that blends science, ancient wisdom and practical biohacks — and reminds us that living well longer starts with getting the basics right. CHAPTERS 00:32 — What Is Extreme Wellness? Dr Cohen explains intentional contrast, the Five Elements of Life, and why balance requires knowing your limits. 02:30 — Stillness as the Ultimate Biohack Why stillness, not stimulation, is where true homeostasis and resilience are found. 05:06 — Is Homeostasis Different for Women? Why biohacks must be individualised, rhythmic, and responsive — not prescriptive. 06:40 — Small Biohacks, Big Results What "biohacking" really means: low effort, high return practices. 07:20 — The Way to Wellness (Poem) Dr Cohen shares his powerful wellness poem outlining 50 accessible daily practices. 09:18 — Why Getting the Basics Right Matters Permaculture, simplicity, and why wellness doesn't need to be expensive. 10:51 — Why Water Is the Most Important Biohack The role of water in ageing, hydration, skin health and detoxification. 13:39 — Chlorine, Microbes & Modern Water Problems How chlorinated water disrupts the skin barrier and microbiome. 14:55 — Why Bathing Water Matters More Than Drinking Water The science of chlorine absorption through skin and lungs. 17:02 — Toxins, Microplastics & Endocrine Disruptors How modern water exposes us to plastics, PFAS and hormone-disrupting chemicals. 18:23 — The Recipe for Wellness (Poem) A simple framework for living well longer, starting with "bathing in beautiful water". 19:27 — Travel Hack: Reducing Chlorine Exposure in Hotels A simple way to outgas chlorine when travelling. 21:33 — Why Plastic Water Bottles Are a Health Disaster Environmental impact, endocrine disruption and safer alternatives. 23:54 — Detoxification: What Actually Works Hydration, flushing, sweating, and why water is foundational to detox. 25:22 — Fat, Toxins & the Female Body Why toxins accumulate in fat tissue and what this means for women and infants. 27:42 — Whales, Earwax & Environmental Toxicity A fascinating story revealing long-term pollution exposure. 29:05 — Is Body Fat a Protective Mechanism? Why Horses Are the Ultimate Nervous System Regulators

In this deeply moving and eye-opening episode of the Biohackher Podcast, Azra sits down with Australia's pioneering wellness leader and equine-assisted learning practitioner, Sharon Kolkka, to explore the powerful, science-backed ways horses help humans heal. Sharon unpacks why horses — as prey animals with extraordinary energetic sensitivity — can read our nervous systems more accurately than we can. The Midlife Reset: Hormones, Health and Hope with Dr. Ceri Cashell

Menopause has been surrounded by misinformation for decades — and too many women, myself included, have been left to suffer in silence. That's why I invited Dr. Ceri Cashell onto the Biohackher Podcast. Ceri is not only a physician but also a passionate advocate for women's health, and in this conversation we go deep into the truths about hormones, ageing, and what women really need in midlife. We unpack the flawed study that scared a generation of women away from hormone therapy, and explore why body identical hormones are not only safe but essential for protecting our hearts, bones, brains, and overall wellbeing. We also dive into the symptoms of perimenopause that no one warns you about — from anxiety and insomnia to vaginal dryness and brain fog — and how lifestyle shifts plus the right hormone support can be absolute game changers. This episode is full of empowering insights, practical takeaways, and the kind of real talk we need to reclaim our health and our power as women. In This Episode, You'll Hear Us Talk About: Why women have been misled about hormones — and the truth behind the science. The difference between synthetic, bioidentical, and body identical hormones. How perimenopause can start earlier than you think, and the signs to look out for. Why suffering through symptoms isn't a badge of honour — and how it accelerates ageing. Vaginal health, libido, and why local hormone therapy is the simplest, safest fix most women never hear about. The connection between hormones, weight gain, metabolic health, and sleep. Why midlife is not the end but a powerful reset — if we support our bodies in the right way. If you're in perimenopause, menopause, or simply curious about how hormones impact women's health and longevity, this is an episode you don't want to miss. 📌 Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome & Introduction Azra introduces Dr. Ceri Cashell and sets the stage for a frank conversation about menopause, hormones, and midlife health. 01:00 – The Misinformation Era How a single misreported study in the early 2000s created decades of fear around hormone therapy. 07:00 – Hormones & Breast Cancer: The Truth Ceri breaks down the real data on estrogen, progesterone, and breast cancer risk — and why fear persists among women and doctors. 12:00 – Body Identical vs. Synthetic Hormones The difference between hormone types, what's safe, and what women should know when weighing their options. 18:00 – Why Breast Cancer Risk Increases with Age Ageing, cellular health, and inflammation: how biology makes breast tissue more vulnerable over time. 20:00 – Putting Menopause on the Big Stage Ceri shares the story of co-founding So Hot Right Now and putting menopause on the Sydney Opera House stage. 24:00 – Symptoms of Perimenopause From hot flushes and mood swings to brain fog and palpitations — the wide range of signs women may not realise are hormone-related. 30:00 – What Best Practice Looks Like Lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, psychological support, and hormone therapy — a personalised approach for each woman. 38:00 – How Long Should You Stay on HRT? Should women stop at 60, 70, or 80? The surprising data on long-term use of hormone therapy. 42:00 – Hormones & Longevity Why estrogen is protective for bone, brain, and heart health — and why many women should stay on HRT for life. 44:00 – The Weight Gain Struggle Understanding visceral fat, insulin resistance, and the lifestyle shifts that really make a difference. 48:00 – Sleep, Snoring & Mouth Taping Why women lose airway tone post-menopause, and whether mouth taping and breathwork can help. 50:00 – Why Sleep is Everything How hormones, melatonin, and cortisol interact to disrupt sleep — and what actually works to improve it. 53:00 – Vaginal Health & UTIs Why vaginal dryness, UTIs, and painful sex are "the lowest hanging fruit" in medicine, and how simple treatments change lives. 57:00 – Libido & Intimacy The complex mix of biology, psychology, and connection when it comes to desire — and the role of testosterone and other tools. 1:02:00 – Brain Fog & Cognitive Function How hormone decline, inflammation, and sleep all impact memory and focus — and what helps bring clarity back. 1:05:00 – Ceri's Longevity Vision Her personal goals for ageing well — from surfing in her seventies to being a fit and active grandmother. 1:07:00 – Closing Thoughts & Next Steps Final reflections, gratitude. Can you actually change your genes? Spoiler: yes, you can. Most of us grow up thinking our genes are like our eye colour — unchangeable, fixed, and totally out of our hands. But today's guest on the Biohackher Podcast, Chris Barnes, is here to flip that script. And he's not letting anyone else go down that road without a fight. In this episode, we dive into the wild world of epigenetics — basically, how your lifestyle, environment, and nutrition can actually influence how your genes behave. It's next-level biohacking, and yes, it's especially relevant for women. 🔥 We unpack: Why your DNA is not your destiny The sneaky ways your daily habits are impacting your genes How to use genetic testing to take the guesswork out of your health decisions What kind of exercise your body actually responds to (hint: it's not the same for everyone!) Personalised health is crucial, as everyone's biology and needs are unique. Understanding your own body and experimenting with different biohacks can lead to better outcomes. The state of health and wellness in Australia (and globally) is concerning, with rising rates of obesity, chronic diseases, and mental health issues. More needs to be done to educate and support people in achieving optimal health. Access to healthcare and affordable, nutritious food is a major issue, with big food companies often prioritising profits over public health. Simple biohacks like hydration, fasting, sauna, cold showers, and supplements like NMN and magnesium can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being. Women's health and hormones play a crucial role in biohacking, and there is a need for more research and education in this area. Biohacking should not be extreme or obsessive, but rather a balanced approach to optimising health and longevity. The future of medicine lies in personalised medicine and precision health, where treatments and interventions are tailored to individual needs and genetics. Quality supplements are important, and it's crucial to do blood work to understand one's deficiencies before taking supplements. Some biohacks may have potential risks, so it's important to research and consult with professionals before trying them. Nutrition plays a significant role in overall health, and it's important to focus on eating real, quality food. Stress management is essential, and finding techniques like exercise, breathwork, and nature can help regulate the nervous system. Creating a low-tox environment by using air and water filters and choosing natural, chemical-free products is important for overall health. Prioritising self-care and putting oneself first is crucial for long-term health and well-being. The Longevity Revolution with Professor Nir Barzilai

It's great to be back for Season 2 of the Biohackher Podcast! I have a great line-up of guests this season for you, and first up is Professor Nir Barzilai. Professor Nir presented at the Unlock Healthy Longevity Conference at the National University of Singapore in March, and when I heard him speak I knew I had to have him on the pod to share more broadly the work he is doing in spearheading the campaign to lobby the FDA to approve drugs targeted at treating ageing.    Professor Barzilai holds the distinguished positions of Director of the Institute for Ageing Research, Director of the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Ageing, and the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research. His groundbreaking work has led to the discovery of the first "longevity gene" in humans, providing a genetic key to understanding healthy aging and extreme longevity. This discovery has paved the way for the development of treatments for age-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, currently being tested in clinical trials. In addition to his research on longevity genes, Professor Barzilai's work encompasses studying the biological mechanisms of aging, including the role of nutrients and genetics in lifespan, and investigating the declines in physical and mental capacity associated with aging. He serves as a Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and of Genetics, contributing significantly to our understanding of how these factors affect longevity. Professor Barzilai's contributions to science and medicine are widely recognised. He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Beeson Fellow for Ageing Research, the Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar in Ageing Award, and the Paul F. Glenn Foundation Award, among others. His leadership extends beyond research, as he spearheads international efforts to approve drugs targeting aging. A key initiative, Targeting Agieng with METformin (TAME), aims to demonstrate that aging-related multi-morbidities can be delayed, potentially revolutionising how we approach aging and its associated diseases. Beyond his scientific achievements, Professor Barzilai's life is marked by remarkable experiences, including serving as chief medic and physician in the Israel Defense Forces, and his humanitarian work in Cambodia and with the Zulu in South Africa.  In exciting recent news, Professor Nir Barzilai has been named president of the Academy for Health and Lifespan Research.     Today we cover: 00:30 The Longevity Genes Project 05:17 Chronological Age vs Biological Age 08:57 Metformin and Longevity 13:41 Takeaways for Middle-Aged Women 22:47 Barriers to Aging Research 25:36 Exciting Prospects in Ageing and Longevity 39:02 Advice for Middle-Aged Women 46:36 Living Well Longer   HELP US SPREAD THE WORD! Living well with MS with Rhea Fawole

Living with an auto immune condition isn't easy. It impacts not just your body, mind, and spirit but your whole life. Today Rhea Fawole joins host Azra Alagic to chat about living well with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Rhea Fawole is the CEO & Founder of SOLVi Migration – an Immigration Law headquartered on the Gold Coast. Her passion to create SOLVi Migration came from 12 years of working in senior roles at the Australian Immigration Department, and seeing the challenges faced migrating to Australia.  When Rhea was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2010 at the age of 32, she felt grief for the life she thought was all but over as she learned to navigate changes in her body, mind and spirit. But like the Phoenix that she is, she has risen to self-educate, embrace, and thrive living with this condition. Rhea discusses: What her symptoms were before she was diagnosed with MS How long it took to get diagnosed and how she grieved about her condition What causes MS it's like to live with How mindset and surrounding herself with a postive network helps manage her condition The treatments that worked and didn't work for her How nutritious food and exercise is critical for managing her condition Her top tips for living well with MS To ensure she managed her health well, Rhea has built a remote legal practice that operates four days per week; a successful operating model she says never would have been borne without her learning how to balance a rewarding career with a chronic health condition. Her vision for SOLVi is to make navigating the migration process to Australia more fun and simple for clients, and the benefit of her remote 4-day structure means that she has been able to attract a team who all value being able to work to help businesses and overseas workers plan their migration pathway to Australia, and have the space to prioritise their own health and wellbeing too. To find out more about SOLVi Visit Here Or tune into to Rhea's Podcast – Making Australian Migration Easy – Listen Here – Watch Here Hosted by Azra Alagic, the Biohackher Podcast will introduce you to Azra's biohacking techniques, and interviews from leading health experts and every day people that will help you optimise your health to live well longer.   HELP US SPREAD THE WORD! Reasons to rethink your next drink

Most of us enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two but we put little thought into whether that occasional drink with our friends is doing us any harm. In this episode, I take a look at the latest research on the health impacts of consuming moderate amounts of alcohol. I discuss how the body processes alcohol, and what it does to the brain and body, from neurodegeneration to hormonal imbalances and impacts in women, and cancers.
