Support the show

Ep. 8 — The Religious Beliefs of the Circassian Nation: Their Characteristics, Origins and Development
Before Islam, before Christianity, the Circassians already had a name for what they believed. Tha khabza. The divine customs. In this episode we follow faith across six stages of Circassian history, from the totems of the mother clans to the day a Tsar handed a nation three choices. We get into Shortanov's catalogue of the Circassian gods, cosmic, local, female, protective, and mythical, and why Tlipsh, the god of iron, outlived every empire that came after him. We look at the Byzantine missionaries who raised churches along the Kuban and the Teberdi, and at the young Circassian nobles who rode to the church door, prayed from the saddle, and never once dismounted. Then the crescent arrives. Derbent falls in 642. The Circassian Mamluks, the Crimean Khans, the Naqshbandi Sufis, and Imam Shamil's deputy Muhammad Amin each leave their mark. In 1717 the priests are killed and their books are burned. In 1725 the Kabardians answer. And in 1861, Tsar Alexander II offers death without graves, exile, or the cross. An old man stands up and answers him.Drawn from the Historical Encyclopedia of the Circassian Nation by Dr. Muhammad Khair Mamser. Volume 1, Section 2, Chapter 3.Support the show

Support the show

Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 7 — Fifteen Centuries of Silence: The Circassian Language and How It Refused to Die
Burn every book a nation owns and you can erase it. Unless that nation keeps nothing in books. The Circassians wrote for two thousand years, and then stopped, writing not a single line from the 4th century CE until the 19th. The language survived anyway, carried in the mouth, house to house, generation to generation. This episode traces Adyghabze across seven stages, from the Nart sagas of the fourth millennium BCE through pictorial writing to the syllabic script that linked Sukhumi and Maikop under a single language by 1300 BCE, a system the Austrian scholar Irko argued reached the Phoenician coast. We unpack what a syllabic language actually does to meaning. Thamada, the word for an elected leader, opens into Tha (god) and ad (tool): the instrument of God, a theology folded inside a job title. Then the Caucasus as the Mountain of Tongues. Strabo counts seventy languages in the Black Sea trading town of Dioscurias. Pliny raises it to three hundred and notes the Romans working through a hundred and thirty interpreters. We follow the scholarship, from Güldenstädt, Klaproth, Dumézil, Yakovlev and Marr, down to Turchaninov decoding a Maikop slab written in Phoenician characters in the Abazgo-Circassian tongue, and Mészáros finding Ubykh and Hittite grammar so aligned he called them one language. And we confront how counting was weaponized: Russian administrators reclassifying every dialect as a separate national language, handing each its own local administration, feeding tribal division. Divide and rule, applied to grammar. We close on Naghmoka Shura Bakmirza, who in 1840 sat down to give a spoken language its alphabet back, and on the dialects that didn't make it: Mokhosh, Jana, and the Abkhaz tongues no one speaks today.Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 6 — The Word That Wasn't "Slave": Class, Councils and the Circassian Social Order
For two hundred years European travelers looked at a Circassian class called the Pshitl and wrote down one word: slaves. But the Pshitl carried weapons, fought in the ranks, kept their own homes, land and livestock, and held the right to take their own master to court. In this episode we open Part Two of Volume One and go inside the machinery of Circassian society itself. We start in the middle of the second millennium BCE, when the plough arrives and quietly invents private property, wage labour, and the first division between those who own land and those who work it. From there we reach what Barzaj called the war democracies, where tribal alliances forged organized authority out of necessity. Then the fork: from the 4th century CE the nation runs two systems side by side. The hereditary system of princes among the Kabardians, Besleney and Bjedugh, and the system of equality, ruled by popular councils under elected Thamadas, where no law became binding until a general assembly approved it.We walk the full hierarchy. The Pshih, the Warq retainers, the Tlaqotal free peasants who were the overwhelming majority and who among the Abzakh and Shapsugh answered to almost no one, down to the Wona-ot house servants. We sit inside the madafa, the guest house, where prince and follower alike had the right to walk through the door. And we test the classifications outsiders imposed, from Danilevsky, Lapinsky and Bell, against Circassian historians like Khan Kray and Shura Naghmoka. Then the ending most people don't know. In 1767, ten thousand peasants rise against the Kabardian lords and lose. In 1770, revolt becomes civil war lasting twenty years. Between 1790 and 1810, running almost exactly parallel to the French Revolution, the Circassian people dismantle their own feudal system from the inside. Not conquered out of it. They ended it themselves.Support the show

Ep. 5 — The Homeland: Elbrus, the Golden Rivers, and the Land That Was Lost
The Greeks called it the land of the Golden Fleece, and they were not being poetic. Villagers really did sink sheepskins into mountain streams to catch the gold dust carried down from the peaks. In this episode we travel the Circassian homeland itself: a mountain chain running thirteen hundred kilometres from the Caspian to the Black Sea, forty one peaks above four thousand metres, Elbrus standing at 5,633, hundreds of rivers, mineral springs, and soil worked since the eighth millennium before Christ. Then comes the hard arithmetic. Circassia once covered roughly 250,000 square kilometres. After 1864 what remained to the Circassians was about 42,000, barely twelve percent of the original homeland. This is the land itself, and the story of how most of it was taken.Support the show

Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 4 — Adyghe or Circassian? The Story Behind a Nation's Name
They call themselves Adyghe. The world calls them Circassian. So where did that second name come from, and why did it stick? In this episode we follow a single word across three thousand years of records, through Greek Kerket and Zikh, Arab and Ottoman Jarkas, Russian Cherkess, and the European Circassian, and we look at the competing explanations offered by Interiano, the Encyclopedia of Islam, Noah al Murtuqi and the Circassian historians who pushed back. We also come right up to the present, to the 2010 conference in Cherkessk where Adyghe Khase organisations from Adygea, Kabardino Balkaria and Karachay Cherkessia proposed uniting into a single republic called Greater Circassia. Names are never only names, and this one carries a nation's argument with history.Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 3 — Mapping a Nation: The Circassian Tribes from the Middle Ages to 1864
Shapsugh. Abzakh. Natukhai. Bjedugh. Temirgoy. Ubykh. Kabarday. This episode is the full atlas of the Circassian nation: every major tribe, the river valley it held, and the story behind its name. We work through the accounts of the travellers who mapped them, including Güldenstädt, Pallas, Klaproth and Bell, along with the errors they made and why those errors still matter. We unpack the great Kabardian split of 1759 between Greater and Lesser Kabarda, the position of the Ubykh as the bridge between Adyghe and Abkhaz, and the tribes who carried the heaviest weight in the final years of the war with the Russian Empire. If you have ever wondered how one nation carried so many names, this is the map.Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 2 — Before the Name: The Ancient Peoples of the North Caucasus
Long before anyone said the word Circassian, the North Caucasus was crowded with peoples whose names survive only in Greek and Roman geography: the Maeotae, the Zikh, the Sanigoi, the Abasgi, the Kerkets, the Ants. In this episode we trace each of these ancient groups, where they lived, what the Greeks wrote about them, and how their names quietly echo into modern Circassian family names, tribes, and even a traditional drink still served today. We follow the Kuban and the Terek, read the maps of Ptolemy and Pliny, and arrive at the Nart nation, the people whose legends stretch from the Don River to the Black Sea. This is the deep foundation layer: the North Caucasus as a living museum of ancient peoples.Support the show

Support the show

Ep. 1 — The Origin Mystery: Who Were the Ancestors of the Circassians?
Hittites. Sumerians. Cimmerians. Even Arabs from the Peninsula. For over two thousand years, historians have argued about where the Circassian people actually came from, and they still have not agreed. In this opening episode we walk through every major theory, from Herodotus and Strabo to the modern Circassian historians Aytek Namitok and Barzaj Semkug, and we test each one against the evidence: physical anthropology, language, place names, and the Nart sagas themselves. Along the way we meet the Maeotae, the Kassites, and a people called the Narts whose stories are shared by Circassians, Abkhaz, Chechens, Ingush and Ossetians alike. It is the oldest unsolved question in Caucasian history, and the answer is far more interesting than any single theory.Support the show

Support the show
