Episode 27: Could Your Mouth Be Part of Your Chronic Illness Story? - Part 1, with guest Jalil Khan

Could your mouth be contributing to fatigue, pain, poor sleep, or nervous system stress in ways you least expect? In this episode, Dr. Eleanor Stein speaks with quantum dentist Jalal Khan about the overlooked links between oral health and chronic illness. Dr. Khan explains how teeth, jaw structure, tongue position, breathing, cranial rhythm, light exposure, water, mitochondria, and environmental stressors may all influence the body’s ability to heal. For people with complex chronic diseases such as fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, long COVID, chemical sensitivities, and chronic pain, this conversation offers a new way to think about dental health — not as cosmetic, but as whole-body medicine. Learning Points The Definition of Quantum Dentistry: Shifting focus from mechanical tooth repair to the body’s fundamental physics. The "Small Mouth" Epidemic: Understanding why 90% of children now face developmental issues rare in our ancestors. The Systemic Gateway: Why the mouth is central to chronic disease. Genetics vs. Environment: Why have our facial structures changed when our DNA has not changed. Airway and Oxygen: How jaw structure dictates our ability to breathe and oxygenate our cells and our energy levels The Impact of Modern Mismatch: How soft foods and indoor lifestyles alter our physical anatomy Lessons from the Past: How indigenous cultures maintained perfect dental arches without modern intervention The "Body Electric": The role of light and magnetism in guiding biological growth and mitochondrial health Structural Foundation: Why a compromised airway can trigger chronic sympathetic nervous system stress Environmental Mismatch: Why our modern world fuels chronic illness. Episode 26: Don't Just Cope With Pain, Overcome It, with Dr. Daniel Lyman

This podcast episode explores the transformative role of neuroplasticity in treating chronic illness, featuring psychotherapist Daniel Lyman and host Dr. Eleanor Stein. Lyman, a specialist in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), details how the brain can "learn" to maintain symptoms like chronic pain, fatigue and brain fog even after physical healing. The discussion centers on distinguishing between structural damage and neuroplastic "alarms" that keep the body in a state of high alert. By shifting from fear to curiosity through somatic tracking, listeners are offered a science-based path toward empowerment, recovery, and hope. Learning Points: - Defining Neuroplastic Symptoms: Learn how symptoms that shift, move, or occur without clear injury are often generated by the brain. - The "Memory" of Sensation: Understand how the brain is powerful enough to recreate physical sensations unconsciously based on past experiences. - The Safety-Seeker Personality: Explore how traits like perfectionism and people-pleasing can keep the nervous system in a state of hypervigilance. - fMRI Evidence: Discover why chronic pain often registers in the brain's emotional centers rather than traditional pain centers. - The Feedback Loop of Fear: See how responding to symptoms with worry reinforces the neural pathways that sustain them. - The "Two-Column" Tool: A practical method for categorizing evidence to distinguish structural issues from neuroplastic patterns. - Somatic Tracking: Learn the technique of observing sensations with "lighthearted curiosity" to teach the brain that the body is safe. True Recovery vs. Coping: Hear why full recovery is a realistic goal for many people with chronic conditions. Episode 25: Could a Simple Injection "Reset" Your Autonomic Nervous System? with Dr. Richard Nahas

In this podcast episode, Dr. Eleanor Stein interviews Dr. Richard Nahas, a leader in integrative and regenerative medicine, about the "forgotten" field of Neural Therapy. They discuss how physical scars, past injuries, and dental issues can create "blockages" in the nervous system that contribute to chronic conditions like ME/CFS and fibromyalgia.  Dr. Nahas explains how local anesthetic injections can reset the autonomic nervous system, allowing the body to heal from long-standing dysfunction. The conversation highlights a shift from merely managing symptoms to identifying and treating the root physical sources of chronic illness. Key Takeaways The Concept of Blockages: Learn how past physical traumas (scars, surgeries, or injuries) can create persistent "interference fields" in the nervous system. What is Neural Therapy: Understand the history and mechanism of using procaine injections to "re-polarize" and reset nerve membranes. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): Discover how the ANS regulates healing and why "blockages" keep the body in a state of chronic stress. The Role of Scars: Even small, old scars can act as constant irritants to the nervous system, potentially triggering widespread pain or fatigue. Dental Connections: Learn why wisdom tooth scars or dental work can be significant sources of systemic health issues. Beyond Symptom Management: Explore a paradigm that focuses on restoring the body's natural ability to heal rather than just suppressing symptoms. Episode 24 - Why Does Medicine Ignore the Sodium-Potassium Pump in Post-Exertional Malaise? with guest Dr. Klaus Wirth

In this conversation, Dr. Klaus Wirth, a medical doctor and pharmacologist introduces his elegant integrative theory about the underlying causes of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).  He details how a loss of homeostasis affects blood flow, blood volume, sodium and calcium regulation and even damages mitochondria. The resulting decrease in energy production maintains ME/CFS as a chronic disease. This hypothesis may explain why avoidance of post exertional malaise (PEM) is so central to recovery. Dr. Wirth uses his extensive background in drug discovery to test a drug that could restore function to the sodium/potassium ATPase and eliminate many downstream symptoms.  Key Takeaways The Role of Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptors: These receptors are critical for regulating blood flow to the brain, heart, and muscles during exercise. Desensitization of these receptors alters homeostasis. Sympathetic Over-activation: Dr. Wirth believes the "fight or flight" system is overactive in ME/CFS patients, leading to exhaustion and a lack of recovery. The Sodium-Potassium Pump: Discover why this vital cellular mechanism fails in ME/CFS, preventing muscles from functioning properly. Mitochondrial Toxicity: Calcium overload inside cells can lead to direct toxicity within the mitochondria. Blood Flow vs. Blood Volume: Explore the dual challenge of reduced circulation and inadequate blood volume in chronic illness. The Power of Integration: Combining diverse research lines (from cardiovascular health to immunology) creates a more complete picture of ME/CFS.   (00:00) Meet Dr. Klaus Wirth: From stroke research to ME/CFS specialist.(01:32) Charity Spotlight: Supporting the MECFS Research Foundation.(04:48) The Discovery: How a TV report changed Dr. Wirth’s research path.(07:11) Loss of Homeostasis: The three pillars of the ME/CFS hypothesis.(11:00) The Science of Fatigue: Why the sodium-potassium pump fails.(15:00) Mitodicure: Is a  new therapeutic on the horizon?(35:00) Evidence-Based Hope: Shifting mechanisms upstream of symptoms.(55:52) Closing Thoughts: Providing hope through medical understanding. Episode 23 Could Your "Mysterious" Symptoms Be a Hidden Vascular Compression? with guest Dr. Robert Hacker

Join vascular surgeon Dr. Robert Hacker and me discussing the often-overlooked world of vascular compression syndromes. Dr. Hacker explains how anatomical variations in which an artery compresses a vein against bone can trigger complex chronic illnesses like POTS, pelvic congestion syndrome, and nutcracker syndrome. These compression syndromes may be much more common among people with complex chronic diseases than previously thought and may explain diverse symptoms from leg swelling, autonomic symptoms and digestive issues. This episode offers a powerful blend of surgical expertise, patient advocacy, and hope for those seeking answers. Key Takeaways - Vascular Compression Defined: These syndromes occur when a high-pressure artery compresses a low-pressure vein against a bony structure, often in the pelvis. - The Acute Condition Surgery Bias: Academic medicine often prioritizes high-stakes arterial emergencies over chronic venous conditions, leading to limited awareness of compression syndromes, even among vascular surgeons. - Dysautonomia Link: There is a significant correlation between vascular compressions and dysautonomia (including POTS). Anyone with dysautonomia will want to learn more. - May-Thurner Syndrome and Nutcracker Syndrome: Learn the symptoms and diagnostic protocols for these two disabling syndromes. - The Vagus Nerve Connection: Compression near the celiac artery can irritate the vagus nerve, potentially leading to symptoms such as bloating, distension, and imbalances in sympathetic tone. - Stenting Strategies: the good news-there are treatments. Dr. Hacker advocates specific stenting techniques, such as avoiding oversizing and extending stents into the inferior vena cava, to improve outcomes and reduce pain. - Mast Cell Considerations: Dr. Hacker suggests that MCAS may be a secondary reaction to prolonged inflammation caused by the compression itself.(00:00) Introduction: Welcome to the Dr. Eleanor Stein Podcast (01:06) The Invisible Condition: Defining Vascular Compression Syndromes (03:24) Shifting Focus: From Academic Surgery to Venous Health (07:51) Anatomy 101: How Bone and Artery "Squish" Your Veins (14:12) Women's Health: Pelvic Congestion and the "Banana" Diagnostic Method (23:54) The Nutcracker: Diagnosing Rare Renal Compressions (33:54) The Nerve Link: Vagus Nerve Irritation and Dysautonomia (51:18) Treatment & Research: Innovative Stenting and Future Data You can find Dr. Hacker at the following places: Website https://stlvascular.com/ Instagram @stlvascular    I’m Dr. Eleanor Stein, a retired medical doctor and psychiatrist with 37 years of lived experience with multiple complex chronic conditions and 25+ years of clinical experience working with people with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, long COVID and more. Episode 21: Is Grief a Psychological Experience or a Full-Body Disease? with Dr. Mary Francis O'Connor

Grief is not only an emotional experience, it is a biological one. In this episode, Dr. Eleanor Stein speaks with grief researcher Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor. Dr. O’Connor is ideally placed to interpret this research for people with complex chronic disease due to her decades-long personal experience with multiple sclerosis. Drawing on neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, and clinical research, they explore how grief, irrespective of the cause, can drive inflammation, disrupt sleep, impair cognition, and increase vulnerability to chronic illness.  This conversation gently challenges the cultural myth about “moving on” and offers a more compassionate, science-based understanding of grief, particularly for people living with complex chronic disease, long-term loss, or invisible illness. Key Takeaways  Grief is a biological process, not a personal failure. Why the brain struggles to update after loss. How grief and chronic illness can amplify each other. Episode 20: Is “Calming the Nervous System” Actually Making You Worse? with guest Irene Lyon

Chronic illness is often treated as a purely physical problem—but what if that’s a dangerous oversimplification? In this deep, science-informed conversation, Dr. Eleanor Stein speaks with nervous system expert Irene Lyon about how unresolved trauma, stress, and early life experiences can dysregulate the autonomic nervous system and drive chronic symptoms years later. Together, they unpack why fight-flight-freeze patterns persist, why quick nervous system “hacks” can backfire, and what true healing actually requires. This episode offers education, nuance, and genuine hope for anyone living with complex chronic illness. Key Takeaways • Chronic illness may arise from nervous system dysregulation, not just disease. • Fight, flight, freeze, and shutdown can coexist—creating chronic symptoms. • Many “calming” techniques suppress symptoms without resolving root causes. • True healing requires capacity building, not quick fixes. • Co-regulation (early and adult) is foundational to self-regulation. • Slow, titrated healing is safer and more effective than aggressive approaches. Episode 16: How Cleaning the Blood Could Help Chronic Illness—The Science of Plasmapheresis with guest Dr. Eric Gordon

In this episode, I explore a cutting-edge yet often misunderstood treatment, plasmapheresis, with physician and researcher Dr. Eric Gordon. This therapy, sometimes described as “cleaning the blood,” is being studied for its potential to help those with chronic complex diseases, long COVID, autoimmune conditions, and even cognitive decline. We dive deep into• how plasmapheresis removes inflammatory proteins, antibodies, and toxins from the blood.• why toxic load from sources like heavy metals, glyphosate, plastics, and PFAS might be silently driving chronic illness.• the fascinating biology of senescent cells (SASP) and how they keep the body “stuck” in an unhealed state.• why some patients experience dramatic improvements and others don’t.• the real-world limits of expensive protocols versus low-cost, sustainable approaches that promote self-management and resilience. This conversation isn’t just about one treatment—it’s about rethinking what healing truly means. It’s about viewing the body as a dynamic symphony that can be retuned rather than suppressed. Plasmapheresis sits within the emerging field of regenerative medicine, where the goal is not merely to manage symptoms but to restore balance, function, and vitality at the system level. Episode 15: The Little-Known Cancer Cure? with guest Dr. Gábor Somlyai

Is deuterium depletion a cancer cure—or a powerful add-on to conventional treatment? In this episode, I speak with Gábor Somlyai, PhD, a molecular biologist and pioneer in deuterium research. His groundbreaking work suggests that lowering deuterium with deuterium-depleted water (DDW) may transform how we approach cancer treatment and metabolic health. Could adjusting something as simple as the water we drink make a measurable difference in cancer survival, energy production, or chronic illness? Have you heard of this? Let me know your thoughts below! In this episode, we discuss • How deuterium shapes cell growth and mitochondrial function • Why gene expression shifts with changes in deuterium levels • What clinical studies reveal about DDW and cancer outcomes • How diet and environment influence deuterium load • Lifestyle approaches that may naturally lower deuterium (02:02) Guest introduction: Dr. Gábor Somlyai and his research on deuterium and cancer (08:40) Early experiments with deuterium-depleted water and effects on cell growth (10:43) Breast cancer mouse studies and surprising results (16:04) Energy production as a hallmark of cancer (20:19) Impact of deuterium-depleted water on healthy vs. cancer cells (31:26) Clinical cases: cancer patients using deuterium-depleted water (35:37) Large patient database study and key findings (42:04) Brain cancer (glioblastoma) studies and survival outcomes (44:22) Reducing cancer mortality by 80% with combination therapy (57:03) Lifestyle strategies: ketogenic diet and lowering deuterium naturally  Explore Dr. Somlyai’s scientific work and resources: Published study on deuterium depletion: https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9059/13/4/876 Full list of Dr. Somlyai’s research papers: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Gabor-Somlyai/research Scientific background and ongoing projects: https://hyd.hu/ Order Preventa deuterium-depleted water: https://preventa.hu/en/Book–Deuterium Depletion: A New Way of Curing Cancer and Preserving Health: https://www.amazon.ca/Deuterium-Depletion-Curing-Cancer-Preserving/dp/6150143864    Welcome to my podcast! Episode 14: The Real Cause of Medical Gaslighting—It's Not What You Think with guest Dr. Efrat LaMandre

In this episode of the Dr. Eleanor Stein Podcast, we explore the science and lived experience of medical gaslighting with Dr. Efrat LaMandre, also known as Dr. E. What happens when knowledge and protocols cannot explain why patients still feel unwell? Dr. E explains why medical gaslighting happens and how to lessen it.   This conversation blends evidence-based insights with real-world experiences and raises essential questions about the future of care. Instead of rejecting medicine, Dr. E invites us to see it as one tool among many—and to ask ourselves what it means to listen to the body truly. In this conversation, you will discover the following: • What was the turning point that changed Dr. E’s entire approach to health care? • Why do protocols work for certain diseases yet fall short for those with complex chronic conditions? • Could your symptoms of “I don’t feel good-itis” be part of a larger pre-disease state? • What does a leaking toilet have to do with understanding medical limitations? • How can patients validate their own symptoms without waiting for external approval? • What simple phrase can clinicians use that shifts everything for patients who feel dismissed?   (04:48) Realizing unintentional medical gaslighting in practice (07:10) How diet and functional approaches changed Dr. E’s perspective (11:03) Mission to end medical gaslighting, especially for women (12:33) Defining medical gaslighting clearly (20:16) The leaky toilet metaphor: limits of conventional medicine (28:05) How funding and pharma shape medical protocols (35:05) Advice for women who feel dismissed but not “sick enough” (41:00) “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence” (42:11) Why hearing “I believe you” matters for patients (47:44) Final message: don’t give up, find someone who believes you Dr. Efrat LaMandre, NP, PhD, is a best-selling author, speaker, and founder of multiple health care initiatives, including EG Healthcare and The Knew Method. Episode 13: The Science of EMF: Health Risks, Electrohypersensitivity, and Practical Ways to Reduce Exposure with guest Dr. Paul Héroux

Many people are quick to change their diet, try supplements, or pursue costly treatments, yet often ignore the health risks of electromagnetic radiation (EMF). Why? Because for decades, industry and governments have focused on making the public believe the risks are smaller than they are, instilling doubt so that we will not press for safer technologies.  In this episode of the Dr. Eleanor Stein Podcast, Dr. Paul Héroux, professor at McGill University and expert in the biological effects of EMF, shares insights into how everyday exposures to electricity and wireless technologies may influence health, chronic disease, and ecosystems. He explains why our cells are vulnerable to interference from EMFs, how this relates to energy production and inflammation, and why some people experience electrohypersensitivity more severely than others. We also touch on research about fertility, neurological conditions, and ecological concerns.  Dr. Héroux also shares five effective strategies you can use right away to reduce your exposure and protect your health. He notes that industry-level solutions exist but have not been implemented because they are not considered convenient. This conversation examines the science, the policies that shape public perception, and the reasons many people still overlook the risks of EMF.   (0:03:15) Why People Ignore EMF Risks (0:06:14) Dr. Héroux’s Background and EMF Research Experience (0:09:02) Electrification, Wireless, and Society’s Rapid Change (0:17:47) How EMF Affects Living Cells (0:27:00) EMF’s Impact on Water, DNA, and Biological Molecules (0:36:06) Digitization, Modern Wireless Tech & Health Impact (0:46:52) Electrohypersensitivity: Who’s Affected, and Why?
