Shifting a Design Business in a New Direction [Traffic Talk]

For this episode of Traffic Talk the question is Where should I start when moving my business in a new direction? Here’s some background: Currently Kyle offer icon design. It’s something he's interested in and have had a passion for sharing with others, but I’ve realized two things recently: It’s not the icons that motivate Kyle, it’s the idea of people having an excellent experience. Kyle wants to do more for the world than push the idea of well designed icons. That’s such a small and generally unknown area of experience. Kyle is shifting his business to helping other business owners develop unique and meaningful web experiences that speak directly to the people they serve.   Here’s the problem: Should Kyle focus on the site? New blog posts? It all feels a bit overwhelming.   Kyle Adam's Website: https://kyleadams.me/ Behance Creative Portfolio: https://www.behance.net/ Internet Archive: https://archive.org/ Seanwes: https://seanwes.com/ TheFutur: https://www.thefutur.com/ Blind Agency: https://blind.com/

How Do You Charge for Additional Freelance Work? [Traffic Talk]

Question Charging freelance client for additional work? For some context:I have a loyal freelance client who pays me each month for doing very little work. And the pay is excellent for the little work I do for them. The work is doing in WordPress. I want to suggest they update their WordPress website to a newer WP Theme. How should I go about submitting this idea to them and charging them accordingly? After all, they already pay me monthly for work that hardly any work at all. I don't want to do the work without charging them. But they have been loyal. Perhaps I tell them I will give them a discount rate? Then I must know what rate would be the normal charge for a job such as this.

    061: Reciprocate

If you want to engage people online and build trust with others in your marketing you have to be willing to reciprocate. The internet is becoming reduced to content marketing, email sign ups, and who can use the most growth hacking tactics in order to build an audience they can monetize so that they can continue to tell others why they're the guru of monetization. This is the short term and in the future this will not work. —Looking to level up in your freelance business? 060: Always Be Authentic

The Internet is experiencing a shift and the shift is leaning towards authenticity meaning that who you really are will be exposed. It seems like every week there's a news story brakes that reveals some type of a hidden secret about a celebrity. Some people are shocked but what is really happening is their true character is being revealed. They can no longer separate who they are from how they want people to perceive them. The same goes for building a creative business, to be successful you're going to have to embrace the fact that you have to be completely honest about who you are where you are in your business where you're trying to be on your level of skill. How do you cover payment and banking fees? [Traffic Talk]

Question:  How do you cover payment and banking fees? Answer To directly answer the question, it would be wise to adjust your rate to consider any banking or payment fees. Whether you are using PayPal or some other service a payment processing fee is going to be anywhere between 3% and 8%. Banking fees tend to vary a widely primarily if you're working internationally with your client base and exchange rates come into play. Though you could adjust your pricing to consider payment and banking fees, there's something larger here that is going on. As a creative professional not only do you need to adjust for payment and banking fees, but you also need to consider what you want to take home at the end of the year. When you take into account taxes that will occur at the end of the year, this changes the conversation. Not only do you need to account for banking and payment fees you also need to consider for state tax, country tax, VAT as well as any sales tax that may be a part of the process. This means you have to ask yourself the question: "when I am working with a client what do I want to take home each client?" You can see an example of this in episode 35 of the freelance jumpstart TV podcast called pricing for profit. In this episode, I dive into this specific topic but as a quick and simple here's something to consider. This means if I wanted to take home $80,000 at the end of the year I would need to make $104,000 which is 30% more then initial take amount of $80,000.

    055: Work On Your Business

Episode Notes: http://freelancejumpstart.tv/55 There comes a time in everyone's business where they should take a step back and see if what they are doing is working. For me I've been working so much in my business, that now it's time for me to work on my business. This has been a huge year of learning for me. I've gone to more conferences and online webinars than ever. Now it's time to apply what I'm learning. It's easy to critique other people's Website and make recommendations but what about my own? This year I have given advice to clients in when listening to myself speak I have realized I need to take my own advice.

052: Lessons Learned from Podcasting 1 Year

Episode Notes: http://freelancejumpstart.tv/52 About one year ago I realize that I needed to do a better job of teaching. Often times I would work with clients and I would learn so much during the client process but I would simply finish the project invoice the client and then I move onto the next one. However all of my experiences and everything I've learned simply just sat in my mind. After some time I realized I needed to do something with all of the learning that was taking place and it would be better to share it with others.  This gave birth to starting a podcast and in one year I learned so many things.

This year I've been to more conferences than any other year of my life. If you are working in your business is important to take a step back and work on your business. Running your own business as a creative entrepreneur is not the same as working for an employer at a company. When you are an employee, the thought is if you work hard someone will recognize your work and give you a raise. However, when you're working for yourself, you have to be the person to give yourself a raise.
