Independent Press Award: GAB TALKS with Anita Selzer, author of The Female Gaze
Anita Selzer speaks the female gaze and its impact on the female representation in photography and art.Historically, male artists have re-presented women through their eyes. It shines a light on the work of twenty contemporary women artists and photographers from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and United States of America, placing these creatives and their works centre stage.Listen and see more author interviews at https://thegabtalks.com/The female gaze is not singular; it is multifarious, often based on the creative’s lived experience. NYC Big Book Award: GAB TALKS with Christina Vitagliano
"Sharing one’s entire life story is no easy task; not for me, not for anyone. I grew up in the ’70s, before the age of information, cell phones, social media, and the internet when the deeply personal subject of abuse was rarely mentioned. So, for decades, I felt like this was my secret. My pain. My shame. As I grew older and the free sharing of information became the norm, I realized that I was not alone in this category. So many others had similar secrets and stories, but the endings to those stories were often tragic, even horrific, and at times included self-medication, addiction, and suicide." Christina Vitagliano is an author, entrepreneur, and the founder of the successful Family entertainment concept, Monster Mini Golf. She's also a survivor of childhood abuse. A unique, candid, sincere, straightforward, no-holds-barred story of a young woman’s journey growing up as the victim of child abuse and how she overcame it despite the odds. Shared firsthand from the voice of a 4-year-old child and progresses as she matures into adulthood. Every 9 Minutes is an eye-opening memoir that delves into the depths of abuse and reveals how one woman learned to retake control of her life and emerge victorious. The author will have you feeling her pain, laughing through her coming of age, and, most importantly, raising awareness of something far too many children have endured. Despite dysfunctional relationships and the soul-crushing torment of sexual exploitation, Every 9 Minutes is a testament to the power of perseverance, showing how Christina emerged from her pain and trauma to build a life of purpose and happiness. With an empowering call to action, she encourages other sufferers of childhood abuse to step forward and take control of their lives, channeling their pain into motivation and refusing to let their trauma define them.

NYC Big Book Award: GAB TALKS with G.E. Poole
How could a book challenge nearly everything you have been led or conditioned to believe about life and reality and still confirm what a part of you has always known? You are part of an Experiment of Consciousness and this truth has profound implications for how you can understand your life and live it. Infrequent Frequencies, Rare Resonance presents bold, new and mind-bending perspectives that challenge fundamental assumptions of the natural world and our place in it. This work probes science, mathematics, music, mysticism, and consciousness in the search for truth, revealing unconventional ideas and new ways of understanding. “IF you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking?" --Haruku Murukami "Infrequent Frequencies, Rare Resonance: Untravelled Paths Through Natural, Practical and Alternative Understandings of your Life, Purpose and Meaning" Evolution transcends material beginnings: higher vibrational frequencies resonate from the infinitely small, on through the level of the Solar System and up through vastness of galaxies. Conscience is your inner guidance system: your inner voice is the active force of a superior consciousness. This very different understanding of polarity leads to new insights about how and why the world operates as it does when approximately half of the population remain essentially spiritually dead. Evidence has been hiding in plain sight: within the core truths of each of the major world faiths, within ancient wisdom, through modern science, mathematics, physics, and cymatics, consistent clues to the puzzle are emerging. Advanced superior consciousness has been in plain sight and awareness and knowledge of this challenges our understandings of origins, extending the natural Gaia Principle through to the next logical stages. There are very rare human beings who have attained enlightenment through raising their vibration and transforming their being in ways leading to a much higher resonance. This small group of people have helped humankind along in every generation. During this lifetime you have extraordinary potential to lift your vibration and transform your inner frequencies. This work provides readers with new insights practical steps to help you achieve the aim your aims to understand your purpose and find your own path. About the Author G.E. Poole is a nothing and a nobody. Outwardly leading an ordinary life as a householder, from an early age he was drawn to physics, logic, science, philosophy and the quest for consciousness. At age 22 he entered The Work through the J. G. Bennett line of transmission through Sherborne House and the Claymont Society. In 1982 he migrated from Hawaii to New Zealand to become a pupil of Sufi Shaikh Abdullah Isa Dougan. NYC Big Book Award: GAB TALKS with Kori Reed, author of MEN-IN-THE-MIDDLE: Conversations to Gain Momentum with Gender Equity's Silent Majority
INCLUSION IN THE OFFICE“Well researched and written, Reed’s work is a ‘call to arms’ for males trying to make sense of the #MeToo movement. Bravo!”—William Carmichael, PhD, MBA,Corporate Training Leader“Packed with quality interviews, quotes, and Reed’s real-life experience, making this book come to life. In addition, the chapter questions and change management application make it a driver of positive change for gender equity.”—Theresa Nordstrom, SPHR, Founder andChief Talent Officer, Talent Company Inc.Nicholas said a conversation about gender equity without men did not meet the criteria for inclusion. Blake said equity is essential and will happen when we acknowledge that men face challenges too.In Men-in-the-Middle, author Kori Reed interviews men across corporate America about gender equity in the workplace. This is a topic men can influence, as they hold nearly 75 percent of C-suite positions, but they don’t talk about it at the office. As it turns out, men have a lot to say! They are aware of the issues and the impacts and, at the same time, unsure of what to do. This uncertainty renders Men-in-the-Middle, even though they may be supporters, on the silent sidelines of gender equity.Combining interviews with insights from secondary research, Reed seeks to provide a framework to understand this “silent majority” and shine the light on new perspectives and topics that often go undiscussed.Men-in-the-Middle: Conversations to Gain Momentum with Gender Equity’s Silent Majority invites men and women to cultivate conversations by providing an orientation on perspective-taking and laying a foundation to move gender equity forward in a new inclusive way. NYC Big Book Award: GAB TALKS with Terence Ang, author of Emerging From the Dark: Stroke...The Untold Stories
“Emerging From the Dark: Stroke...The Untold Stories,” by Terence Ang, is a collection of illustrated stories of people in all stages of stroke recovery. Ang, who himself has experienced a stroke, highlights post-stroke life in an interesting, unique, and powerful way. A stroke survivor himself, Ang’s right hand no longer functions like it used to, and using it is painful and agonizing. This is his second published book, and it is filled with illustrations that he drew himself. However, Ang has shown tremendous courage, grit, and determination in rebuilding his life. What can you gain after losing so much? INTERVIEW PLEASE NOTE: The author has aphasia, a disorder that affects speech as a result of stroke. We have outlined his audio and video responses immediately after Gabby's question, but his full written response is included at https://www.independentpressaward.com/thegabtalks/emerging-from-the-dark...the-untold-stories There are different types of aphasia, which can affect individuals to varying degrees in their ability to speak, write, and understand both spoken and written language. Terence: Hi Gabby, thanks for having me. Gabby: Terence, thank you so much for joining us today! Before we talk about your book, "Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories," can you please share with our listeners your story, beginning with that fateful day in August 2020? Terence (Audio/Video): - That day in August was a turning point in my life - I had a stroke - And ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life - I couldn’t talk and nobody could understand me - It was a dark time - I felt hopeless - But I was determined to redefine my life - And I ended up writing about my journey - To prove that stroke was just a chapter in my story - And not the entire book Gabby: Your debut book, “A Cry in the Dark” was launched in June 2022. It eloquently detailed your journey from victim to survivor. You were subsequently asked by the WORLD STROKE ORGANIZATION to speak at the 14th World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore. What inspired you to write and illustrate Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories? Terence (Audio/Video): - I was angry and frustrated in the first year of my stroke - So I channelled my feelings into writing “A Cry in the Dark” - Many stroke survivors reached out to me after that - Which inspired me to write the next book - And share the stories of other stroke survivors - I wanted to pay tribute to the strength and courage of - those who have walked the same Journey Gabby: “Emerging from the Dark: Stroke…The Untold Stories” is incredibly inspirational. The narratives you've included from both survivors and caregivers are filled with hope, determination and resilience. However, some of the narratives and illustrations are also dark and disconcerting. Why was it important to share this side of recovery? Terence (Audio/Video): I wanted to be honest. So that someone - who has not experienced stroke would - learn about our struggles Each stroke survivor’s experience is unique Some may find their recovery more manageable While others face greater obstacles Through open conversation, I hope people can understand the journeys of stroke survivors And learn more about our unseen struggles Gabby: What is the biggest misconception about strokes? Terence (Audio/Video): - Many people think that stroke only happens to older people - I used to think that too, - Being relatively young and healthy - But, the truth is, - stroke can happen to anyone, at any time. - Even teenagers and young adults can also get it. - So it’s important to learn more about the condition See the full transcript of the audio/video portion here: https://www.independentpressaward.com/thegabtalks/emerging-from-the-dark...the-untold-stories as well as Terence Ang's full written responses. GAB TALKS with Joseph Howse, author of The Girl in the Water
“A resilient coming-of-age story … The author includes emotional, compelling scenes with every character, as each one has been dealt a vastly different hand of cards. … It feels very down-to-earth and includes necessary comical moments throughout. I did not know much about the events or places in this book before, but after finishing it and doing a little extra curiosity research, I’m thankful to have learned something new in such an engaging way.” —Audrey Davis, IBR Winner of the 2023 Independent Press Award for Literary FictionThe Girl in the Water is the story of a multiethnic group of young friends, coming of age in Estonia and Ukraine in the last days of the Soviet Union. Their lives are shaped by an Afghan war, the Chernobyl disaster, and the collapse and legacy of a suffocating society. The novel examines life and choice in the aftermath of trauma and has garnered praise as both a lifelike family drama and a literary statement in the tradition of the Russian classics. Scenes of shortwave listening and roaming the hinterlands provide a backdrop to the young characters' search for themselves within a failing civilization that sees non-cooperation and unhappiness as a disease. At the centre of this multilayered story of family, society, and nature is a Soviet girl, Nadia, who, one day on a remote beach, looks up from her book to see that her friend is drowning. Nadia is an abstract thinker growing up in an era of endgames. She is a bookworm, an architect of reckless pranks, a day-and-night wanderer, a compulsive witness, and a note-taker. All around her she sees people quietly gambling with life and soul for little apparent gain. As her illusions unravel, she asks herself, what is to be done? The Girl in the Water is a tragicomedy. It is an intricate study of beauty and futility in everyday life and a call for compassion and humour in a cruel world.

GAB TALKS with Alan Sidransky, author of Incident at San Miguel
Incident at San Miguel: release date: May 19thHavana, Cuba. December 1958. Two brothers find themselves on opposite sides of Castro’s revolution. One dark night, after rescuing a leader of the revolt under house arrest, one brother finds himself hunted. The other, an influential attorney, must make a choice. Help his brother, placing the whole family at risk, or let Batista’s forces capture him. His decision will haunt them both for the rest of their lives. How far will we go to protect those we love? Based on a true story, Incident at San Miguel takes us there.---Alan has penned numerous articles, short stories, and historical fiction novels including his debut, Forgiving Maximo Rothman, which is Book One in the Forgiving Series, and The Interpreter, Book One in the Justice Series.Alan is fluent in Spanish and considers the Dominican Republic his second home and an inspiration for many of his stories. A Bronx native, Alan is a longtime resident of Washington Heights where he lives with his wife, a digital advertising consultant.Incident At San Miguel is set in 1959 Havana Cuba, during the Cuban Revolution and its aftermath. The story focuses on a Jewish Cuban family. Specifically, we follow two brothers Aaron and Moises Cohan who are on diametrically opposed sides of the political spectrum. The Cohan brothers have little in common other than a shared Jewish heritage. For this impressive historical fiction piece, Alan collaborated with Miriam Bradman Abrahams, a storyteller and Cuban born daughter of Cuban Jewish refugees. The Cohan brothers were inspired by the true story of her father Juan Bradman and her uncle Soloman Bradman. The main theme of the story is love, loyalty, and responsibility to family. Alan likes to write stories that focus on ordinary people who face real struggles “I hope to bring to light the stories of those who have triumphed over oppression”.“I focus on the personal experience of everyday people faced with extraordinary circumstances. What does one do when faced with events beyond their control? As a member of a family ravaged by the Holocaust, I am determined to tell the stories of refugees and survivors I’ve known.” An avid reader and history buff, Alan was inspired and influenced by many writers including Boris Paternak (Doctor Zhivago) and Hemingway.Unlike a memoir or a nonfiction book, Alan appreciates how broad a fiction work can be. A work of fiction allows the reader to get very close to the character, feel their emotions, and understand their circumstances, according to Alan.To learn more about Alan, his current work, and purchase his books visit ajsidransky.com.

GAB TALKS with Don Berg, author of Schooling For Holistic Equity: How To Manage the Hidden Curriculum for K-12
What Is Schooling for Holistic Equity About? There is no question that the American education system is in crisis. There is a significant risk that the mainstream school system will cheat children out of some – if not all – of the education they deserve because a pervasive, hidden curriculum utterly fails to support the well-being of students and educators. Students are expected to act like data-processing machines, but real human beings do not act like machines. In his groundbreaking book “Schooling for Holistic Equity,” Don Berg explores the reasons for current high levels of student and teacher disengagement, the disconnect between educational goals and results, and the “fauxachievement” and shallow learning that prove woefully inadequate in preparing students for higher education or the workforce.FIND OUT MORE on HolisticEquity.org Presented by IndependentPressAward.com To listen and see more author interviews and videos, visit www.theGABTALKS.com

GAB TALKS with Timothy J Brown PH.D., author of No One Cheers for Goliath: My Leadership Story
NYC Big Book Award: GAB TALKS with Timothy J Brown PH.D. No One Cheers for Goliath chronicles the obstacles overcome and the leadership lessons learned by Timothy J. Brown from his journey as a first generation African American college student to academic dean. As the son of a steel worker, his path took him from the small steel mill town of Coatesville, PA through his improbable ascension into leadership positions in higher education. His story, however, started inauspiciously as he landed on academic probation after his first semester at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He would rebound to earn two degrees in Communication Studies from West Chester University, and complete his Ph.D. in Rhetoric at Ohio University. From Ohio, he would take his first faculty position at Buffalo State College, before returning to West Chester University as a faculty member in the same department in which he was a student. After five years, he would succeed his mentor and the person who first encouraged him to go to graduate school, Dr. Denny Klinzing, as department chair (Denny served 26 years as chair of the department). Dr. Brown would serve 10 years as department chair of the Department of Communication Studies at West Chester University-a program that had over 500 majors and over 35 faculty members before being named the Dean of the James L. Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte. The Knight School of Communication is the only school in the nation that carries the Knight Foundation name. Currently, Dr. Brown serves as the Dean of Liberal Arts at Montgomery County Community College where he oversees 15 departments that span the arts & humanities and social sciences. As Dr. Brown excelled as a teacher/scholar, he became a leader on his campus and in the discipline of communication. Among his many honors includes being named a Distinguished Teaching Fellow and a Distinguished Research Fellow by the Eastern Communication Association, and being honored as a Drum Major for Justice by West Chester University's Frederick Douglass Society. No One Cheers for Goliath revisits Dr. Brown's leadership journey in higher education through personal reflections, life experiences, and memories of the people and events that shaped his leadership philosophy of being a servant-leader. Dr. Brown's servant-leadership approach is forged upon building authentic relationships and providing individuals with opportunities and support in order for them to succeed. Through powerful personal examples and stories, Dr. Brown captures what he learned as a leader in higher education. He believes in people because others had believed in him. He supports people as others supported him. He connects with people as others have connected with him. His ability to see people through their challenges, is reflective of the challenges that he had to overcome. The people, events, and circumstances that Dr. Brown discusses in No One Cheers for Goliath are meant to motivate, to encourage, and inspire leaders and aspiring leaders. As a result, effective leadership is a transformative process where the leader comes along side others to unlock their potential in order for them to reach goals that might have otherwise seemed unobtainable.
