Join us for another episode of Hearts of Oak Podcast, where we're honoured to have the return of Petr Bystron, a Member of the European Parliament representing the Alternative for Germany (AfD), as our guest. In this episode, Petr Bystron gives the background to the AfD’s result in Saxony-Anhalt — a win so large, he says, yet the old parties still refuse to govern with them. He walks through the vote, the so-called firewall, Friedrich Merz’s deal with the Social Democrats, and why he thinks the CDU has left the ground it held under Helmut Kohl. He also talks about Merz and Trump, Giorgia Meloni in Italy, and where the AfD goes next. Petr Bystron is the highest-ranking foreign politician of the AfD: He has been Chairman of the AfD in the Foreign Committee of the German Bundestag since 2017. Since 2021 he has been the foreign policy spokesman for his party and its representative in the Council of Europe and the Interparliamentary Union (IPU). He was the first AfD politician to be officially received by an incumbent president (Milos Zeman) and the first European to receive the „Eagle Award “ from the conservative US Phyllis Schlafly Foundation. He was born in the USSR, from which he fled to Germany at the age of 16, where he received political asylum. Thirty years later, he faced similar persecution in Bavaria: during the 2017 election campaign, he was subjected to an illegal house search and it was announced that he was being monitored by the Bavarian secret service. In addition to these state reprisals, he is always the target of attacks by left-wing extremists. Petr Bystron is one of the founding members of the AfD. From 2015 to 2017 he was the state leader of the party in Bavaria. He took over the party in a crisis and led it from 3.5% of the vote to the best election result of all western federal states in the 2017 federal election with 12.7%. He founded and headed his party's National Committee for European and Foreign Policy (2013-2015). He studied political science at the University of Politics and the Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich and has been working as a journalist for years. His articles on business and politics have been published in renowned daily newspapers and magazines in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Ernst J. van Zyl - AfriForum, Afrikaner identity and South Africa’s State Decay Ernst J. van Zyl, head of public relations at AfriForum, joins Hearts of Oak to discuss South Africa’s political and social crisis. He explains AfriForum’s work as a large, member-funded civil-rights and community organisation: court challenges, local problem-solving where the state has failed, and a nationwide safety network. The conversation covers layered identity — why many South Africans, including Afrikaners, put culture and language before national identity — and why a highly centralised state struggles to manage deep diversity.   Ernst describes three decades of state-capacity decay: collapsing electricity, water, roads and rail, cadre deployment, corruption, and policies that enrich a connected elite under the language of empowerment. He details the Expropriation Act, the live court battle over property rights, farm murders, the “Kill the Boer” chant, media reluctance to challenge official narratives, and the ANC-led coalition that has not reversed those policies. The interview also looks at Orania, the limited U.S. refugee option, and AfriForum’s decision to stay and build a future for Afrikaners in South Africa rather than leave. Ernst J. van Zyl is Head of Public Relations at AfriForum, South Africa’s largest member-funded civil-rights and community organisation. After postgraduate work in the Psychology of Religion, he spent 23 years as a university chaplain and senior lecturer, with a PhD on the Oxford Inklings, teaching literature, psychology, and monotheistic mysticism. In the 1980s he smuggled Bibles and medicine to dissident Christians behind the Iron Curtain, including Catholic seminarians in Czechoslovakia, and endured arrests by Communist security services. He served on the Church of England’s General Synod for twenty years, was Chaplain to the Queen for nine years, and presented a BBC Faith and Ethics radio programme for four years. He became a Catholic in 2019 and served as Associate Editor of the Catholic Herald. Influenced by recusant English Catholics, St John Henry Newman, and G.K. Callum Smiles joins Hearts of Oak to report from his recent trip to Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on the North African coast, where he was filming with Fox Populi. Fresh from Gibraltar, he describes a migration situation far larger than expected: thousands of arrivals after the major influx on 31 July, with Moroccan migrants concentrated in the south and sub-Saharan migrants in the north. The Spanish-majority enclave effectively saw its population double in a short period. From above it looked attractive; at street level it was chaotic and unstable. Callum details the military response, overcrowding and fights at facilities built for far fewer people, migrants openly stating they wanted Europe’s wealth and a better life (encouraged by social media and eager to be filmed), and the wider implications for the EU, Schengen, and the necessity of border control. Gary Rabine discusses his early work in tree service and driveway paving in northern Illinois and how he developed that into the Rabine Group of companies.  He describes expanding into parking lot paving, trucking, and other construction and facilities services, while incorporating technologies such as AI, robotics, and drones.  Gary explains his method of identifying capable people and building businesses around them, along with his views on leadership and long-term planning.  He also talks about the role of his Catholic faith in his personal and professional life, the work of the Cheryl Rabine Foundation, and the origins of his Ditch Digger CEO podcast.  Additional topics include his early support for Charlie Kirk, his involvement in local and national political matters, a lawsuit concerning federal vaccine requirements that reached the Supreme Court, and his current focus on infrastructure development through Rabine Global and Sight Technologies. Acclaimed sculptor Sabin Howard returns to Hearts of Oak to discuss his ambitious new project, the Grand Liberty Arch — the monumental follow-up to his National World War I Memorial, which was unveiled in Washington, D.C. in September 2024. Sabin shares how the Grand Liberty Arch, designed for America’s 250th anniversary and slated for unveiling before the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah, celebrates freedom, liberty, personal agency, and self-responsibility.  He explains why he chose to create the work independently in Utah after being granted land at the state capitol, and how raising over $2.3 million through a charitable foundation has allowed him to move forward with this massive bronze sculpture — three times the size of his previous memorial. Sabin also dives deep into his artistic philosophy, contrasting his classical, Renaissance-inspired approach — which elevates human dignity and tells a story like a “bronze movie” — with much of today’s modern art.  He speaks openly about the spiritual dimension of his work, the role of faith in giving him courage as an artist, and why he believes art should be public, purposeful, and rooted in the belief that human beings are made in the image of God. A compelling look at one artist’s mission to restore meaning, beauty, and heroism to public sculpture in America. Sabin Howard grew up in New York City and in Torino, Italy. He studied art at the Philadelphia College of Art and then earned his MFA from the New York Academy of Art.  For twenty years, he taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has been elected to the board of the National Sculpture Society.  He has received numerous commissions and has showed his work at more than fifty solo and group shows. After 72,000 hours of working from life models in the studio, Sabin designed and created the hero’s journey that memorializes the courage and sacrifice of our veterans in WWI, and in all wars, in A Soldier’s Journey. He has created an illustrious body of work, including three heroic scale pieces, HERMES, APHRODITE, and APOLLO, as well as many smaller pieces.  His works are owned by museums and private collectors all over the world, and they have been favorably reviewed by USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Epoch Times, American Artist, Fine Arts Connoisseur, American Arts Collector, and The New Criterion, as well as many other journals internationally.  He is an accomplished public speaker and is the subject of several television profiles. Rupert Lowe’s Rape Gang Report: The Truth About 250,000 Abused British Girls and Failed Multiculturalism This episode Peter delivers a detailed overview and review of Rupert Lowe’s independent, survivor-led Rape Gang Inquiry Report — a 219-page investigation into organized child sexual exploitation across the United Kingdom. Drawing on testimonies from survivors, whistleblowers, experts, campaigners, and former professionals, the report examines the scale of grooming and group-based child sexual exploitation that has affected dozens of local authority areas (149 out of roughly 380) over decades.  It presents the abuse as a widespread national problem rather than isolated local scandals, with strikingly similar methods used in towns and cities across the country: targeting vulnerable girls as young as 11 with gifts, alcohol, and drugs, followed by taxi transport to flats, hotels, and houses for repeated rape, trafficking, violence, blackmail, and in some cases forced conversion to Islam. Peter explores the report’s findings on catastrophic institutional failures. Police, social services, schools, the NHS, taxi licensing bodies, and local authorities repeatedly ignored clear warning signs, treated victims as prostitutes or “consenting,” closed cases prematurely, destroyed or lost evidence, and returned children to their abusers.  A central theme is how fear of accusations of racism or Islamophobia paralyzed action and contributed to the cover-up that allowed the abuse to continue for years. Peter also covers the report’s analysis of the perpetrators and context, including the strong over-representation of Muslim Pakistani men among those convicted in group-based cases (over 90% bearing distinctively Muslim names, overwhelmingly of Pakistani heritage), and the failure of authorities to properly record or discuss ethnicity and religion.
