Finding Joy in the Smallest Moments with “Grandfluencer” Diane Shiffer, Your Chubby Vintage Nana
WELCOME TO SEASON 8! If you are joining our community for the first time. we are thrilled to have you join us. Hot Flashes & Cool Topics podcast talks about everything for women over 50. In the heartfelt first episode of this season, we welcome Diane Shiffer, the beloved social media creator known as “Your Chubby Vintage Nana,” to discuss finding joy, embracing authenticity, aging with confidence, kindness, and creating a meaningful life through everyday moments. Diane shares the unexpected story of how she became a social media sensation during the early days of the pandemic. What began with a simple video of a lavender lemonade and an accidentally time lapsed hair tutorial quickly grew into a massive online community. Today, Diane’s storytelling, vintage aesthetic, soothing voice, and messages of kindness resonate with millions of followers. The conversation also explores Diane’s book, The Smallest of Joys: How to Create Your Own Magic, Let Your Best Be Enough, and Find Contentment Exactly as You Are, which encourages readers to recognize and savor the everyday moments that bring meaning and happiness. Diane discusses her approach to dealing with negativity online, including assuming positive intent while maintaining firm personal boundaries. She explains why kindness does not mean allowing unkindness into your life and how setting boundaries can create a safer, more welcoming community. A major theme of the episode is finding joy in difficult circumstances. Diane also introduces listeners to her concept of “happy traps”: small, intentional pleasures designed to give yourself something comforting to anticipate during stressful periods. From saving a favorite video to discovering a surprise note or treat, these simple practices can help interrupt an anxiety spiral and create moments of peace. We also talk about the importance of noticing beauty in everyday life, whether it is rain on a windshield, a warm cup of coffee, a favorite vintage object, or a kitten curled up on a pillow. Diane describes these fleeting moments as links in a “joy chain,” reminding us that a fulfilling life is often built from countless ordinary moments rather than a handful of major milestones. Ultimately, Diane’s message is simple but powerful: you do not have to change who you are to create a joyful life. By embracing your authentic self, setting healthy boundaries, practicing kindness, noticing beauty, celebrating everyday moments, and allowing yourself to rest, you can find contentment exactly where you are. Reinventing Life After 60: Elizabeth Perkins Talks Menopause, Women’s Health & Finding Herself Again (Replay)
SEASON 8 STARTS NEXT WEEK! In our final replay episode of Season 7, we revisit our conversation with actress and advocate Elizabeth Perkins. Elizabeth shares her personal experiences with reinvention, motherhood, menopause, women’s health, and the freedom that comes from finally putting yourself first. After four decades as an actress and nearly four decades as a mother and caretaker, Elizabeth explains why she ultimately left Los Angeles and moved across the country to Western Massachusetts. She describes the liberating experience of driving cross-country alone, building a close-knit community, reconnecting with creativity, and creating a dedicated art studio for her mixed-media collage work. Elizabeth also speaks candidly about what it means to enter a new chapter of life after raising children and caring for aging parents. She reflects on the pressure women face to remain caretakers, the guilt that can accompany putting yourself first, and why the years after 60 can become an opportunity for profound reinvention rather than a period of slowing down. Elizabeth recounts years of being dismissed while experiencing severe symptoms, ultimately discovering dangerously high blood glucose and being diagnosed with late-onset autoimmune diabetes shortly before undergoing a full hysterectomy. She also discusses the challenges of navigating menopause and surgical menopause, the importance of listening to women's symptoms, and the need for better research, education, and individualized healthcare. This episode is ultimately about finding your voice, reclaiming your identity, embracing creativity, building community, and giving yourself permission to dream again.

One more replay to go until Season 8 starts! On this replay episode, we talk with DeeDee Moore, founder of More Than Grand. DeeDee explains that being a successful parent does not automatically prepare someone to be a successful grandparent. Ozempic, Wegovy & GLP-1 Medications Explained: Cost, Side Effects, Insurance Coverage & Long-Term Weight Loss: REPLAY
In this replay episode, we interview obesity medicine specialist Dr. Alexandra Sowa, author of The Ozempic Revolution. The discussion demystifies GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, semaglutide, and tirzepatide, explaining how they work, who they are designed for, and why they represent a major shift in the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease. Dr. Sowa emphasizes that obesity is not a failure of willpower, but a complex chronic disease driven by genetics, hormones, metabolism, and environmental factors. Our discussion moves beyond the basics of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and semaglutide to explore practical questions many patients have: *How much do these medications cost? * Will insurance cover them? * What are the side effects? * How long do you need to stay on treatment? * And what lifestyle changes are essential for lasting success? Dr. Sowa explains that GLP-1 medications are powerful tool, but they are not a magic solution. Sustainable weight loss and improved metabolic health require proper nutrition, strength training, medical supervision, and a long-term commitment to healthy habits. Moon Unit Zappa on Earth to Moon: Family Trauma, Healing, and Living Her Best Midlife (Replay)
In this intriguing replay episode, we welcome writer, actress, comedian, artist, podcaster, and author of the deeply personal memoir Earth to Moon, Moon Unit Zappa. Moon shares what it was really like growing up as the daughter of legendary musician Frank Zappa and Gail Zappa, revealing a childhood marked by emotional neglect, family dysfunction, fame, resilience, and ultimately, healing. Moon explains that writing Earth to Moon became an act of survival after her mother's death in 2015 forced her to reevaluate everything she believed about family, trust, loyalty, and love. Drawing from journals she had kept throughout her life, she revisits defining moments that shaped her identity while reclaiming the phrase "Earth to Moon" (once used by her mother as criticism) as a symbol of finally telling her own story from her perspective. The conversation explores Moon's complicated relationship with both parents. She shares how she idolized Frank Zappa while longing for his attention during his years of constant touring. Listeners hear the touching story behind the creation of the iconic hit "Valley Girl," which began with a note Moon slipped under her father's studio door asking if they could collaborate. What she thought was simply a fun father-daughter recording session unexpectedly became a cultural phenomenon that launched her into the spotlight while creating new tensions within her family. Moon also reflects on growing up with a mother she describes as emotionally difficult to please. She discusses years spent believing she was somehow responsible for their fractured relationship before eventually accepting, through therapy, yoga, and years of personal work, that some relationships cannot be repaired by one person alone. Looking back, she wonders whether her mother may have struggled with undiagnosed mental health or neurodivergent challenges, while acknowledging that she can never know for certain. Throughout the interview, Moon candidly discusses the lasting impact of emotional neglect, perfectionism, hypervigilance, and low self-worth. Despite public perceptions that she was effortlessly cool during the height of her fame, she reveals the insecurities that accompanied growing up in an emotionally unpredictable household. She shares the "kid math" she unconsciously performed, believing that if her father devoted time to people he claimed meant nothing to him instead of spending time with her, then she must somehow matter even less. The discussion also examines several painful moments detailed in Earth to Moon, including her mother's controlling influence over her early acting career, pressure to leave home while still a teenager, financial demands placed upon her as a young adult, and the emotional toll of constantly seeking approval that never seemed to come. One of the most moving parts of the conversation centers on grief and forgiveness. Moon recounts learning that her father, after being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer, was unwilling or unable to have the heartfelt conversations she desperately hoped would bring closure. Years later, when Gail became terminally ill, Moon chose compassion over confrontation, offering forgiveness before discovering difficult truths about her mother's handling of Frank Zappa's estate and final wishes. She openly discusses the complicated legal disputes surrounding the Zappa family estate, emphasizing that the deepest wounds were never about money but about feeling excluded from her father's legacy and emotionally devalued by those closest to her. Moon reflects on how each of her siblings experienced a different version of their parents, illustrating how birth order, family dynamics, and changing circumstances shape childhood in unique ways. She explains that while the legal battles fractured family relationships, writing Earth to Moon allowed her to process those experiences without turning the memoir into an exercise in blame. She reveals that her earliest draft was fueled by anger before she intentionally rewrote the book with greater compassion, humor, and understanding. The conversation concludes with Moon's reflections on marriage, parenting, and breaking generational cycles. She candidly admits she entered adulthood without healthy relationship models but became determined to create something different for her own child. Through parenting research, emotional honesty, and open communication, she has embraced opportunities to apologize, grow, and model the kind of unconditional love she longed for as a child. For Moon, parenting has become proof that family patterns do not have to be repeated. Whether you're a longtime Frank Zappa fan, interested in celebrity memoirs, or navigating your own family relationships, Moon Unit Zappa's story offers powerful insights into healing from the past while creating a healthier future.

The Thyroid Fix: Hormones, Weight Gain & Tests Your Doctor May Be Missing
In this episode, Dr. Amie Hornaman, the “Thyroid Whisperer” and author of The Thyroid Fix, breaks down the complexities of thyroid health, explaining why millions of people continue to struggle with symptoms despite being told their thyroid is "normal." She explores the key differences between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, with a special focus on Hashimoto's disease, the autoimmune condition responsible for the vast majority of hypothyroidism cases. Dr. Hornaman explains why comprehensive thyroid testing goes far beyond measuring TSH alone. She discusses the importance of evaluating Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies to uncover hidden thyroid dysfunction that standard lab work often misses. The conversation also highlights why many patients continue to experience fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, hair loss, depression, and low energy even after beginning traditional thyroid treatment. The episode examines the relationship between thyroid dysfunction and perimenopause, menopause, and hormonal changes, emphasizing how thyroid disorders are frequently overlooked in women during midlife. Dr. Hornaman also discusses how an underactive thyroid can reduce the effectiveness of GLP-1 weight loss medications, making proper thyroid optimization essential for successful weight management. Listeners will learn when lifestyle changes, nutrition, and targeted supplementation may help support early thyroid dysfunction, as well as when thyroid hormone replacement therapy becomes necessary. Dr. Hornaman explains why thyroid hormone replacement is generally a lifelong treatment once significant thyroid damage has occurred, distinguishing it from other forms of hormone replacement therapy. Whether you're experiencing unexplained symptoms, have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, or are seeking better answers about hormone health, this episode provides practical, evidence-informed insights into diagnosis, treatment options, and long-term thyroid wellness.
