Episode 135: The Lie: If I Were Better, This Wouldn't be so Hard

Hey, Friend! Throughout The Lie series, we've exposed six lies that Christian leaders can quietly believe: I have to say yes to everyone. My worth comes from my work. Everyone has to like me. I can rest when everything is finished. More ministry means more faithfulness. If I were better, this wouldn't be so hard. And underneath all of them is a similar message: Try harder. Do more. Be better. Prove yourself. But the gospel offers us something very different. You don't have to prove your worth. You don't have to earn God's love. You don't have to meet every need. You don't have to be liked by everyone. You don't have to do everything. And you don't have to become a better version of yourself before God can work through you. Jesus invites weary and burdened people to come to Him and receive rest. Lie: If I were better, this wouldn't be so hard. Truth: Hard doesn't mean I'm failing. Maybe you're not failing. Maybe you're growing. Maybe you're grieving. Maybe you're learning. Maybe you're carrying something heavy. Maybe you're simply in a hard season. And maybe God isn't asking you to become someone else before you can be faithful. Maybe He's inviting you to bring your whole, imperfect, sometimes-tired, sometimes-confused self to Him. You can be human and faithful at the same time. And remember: Leadership isn't just about what you accomplish. It's about who you're becoming. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 134: The Lie: Faithfulness is Measured by How Much I Do

Hey, Friend! For many Christian leaders, "more" can become an almost invisible measure of faithfulness. More ministry. More people helped. More programs. More opportunities. More hours. More responsibility. And when we look at our calendars and see that we're doing less than we could be doing, we can begin to wonder: Am I really being faithful? But here's the problem: there will always be more ministry to do. In this episode, we're challenging the lie that more ministry automatically means more faithfulness—and discovering a better question: God, what are You actually asking me to do? Opportunity or Assignment? Not every need is your assignment. Not every opportunity is your calling. Not everything that is good is something God is asking you to carry. Timing matters. Something can be a wonderful opportunity and still not be your assignment in this season. The Leadership Challenge This week, when a new opportunity comes your way, resist the urge to answer immediately. Instead, ask: Is it good? Is it mine? Is it mine now? Then give yourself permission to say no to something good if it keeps you available for something God has actually entrusted to you. The Truth Lie: Faithfulness is measured by how much I do. Truth: Faithfulness is measured by how faithfully I do what God has actually given me to do. And remember: leadership isn't just about what you accomplish. It's about who you're becoming. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 133: The Lie: I Can Rest When Everything is Finished

Hey, Friend! When will you finally allow yourself to rest? After the next project? After the big event? After the crisis is over? After everyone else has what they need? After you finally get caught up? Here's the problem: the work will never be finished. There will always be another email. Another meeting. Another person who needs you. Another problem that needs solving. So if you believe rest is something you earn after the work is done, you may never rest at all. In this episode, we're exposing a lie that many Christian leaders quietly believe: I can rest when everything is finished. We'll look at the way Jesus modeled rhythms of work, withdrawal, prayer, and rest—even when there were still people who needed Him. In Mark 6, Jesus actually invited His exhausted disciples to come away with Him and rest. Rest wasn't a reward for finishing their ministry. It was part of how He taught them to live and lead. And we'll ask a deeper question: What do you believe will happen if you stop? Because sometimes our resistance to rest isn't really about our calendars. It's about identity, control, guilt, or the belief that everything depends on us. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 132: The Lie: Everyone Has to Like Me

Hey, Friend! Have you ever walked away from a conversation and replayed it in your head? Did I say the wrong thing? Is she upset with me? What does he think of me now? Maybe you find yourself apologizing when you haven't actually done anything wrong. Maybe you avoid difficult conversations because you don't want anyone to be disappointed in you. Or maybe criticism hits you harder than it should because, somewhere underneath it all, you believe that if someone doesn't like you, something must be wrong with you. Welcome to one of the most subtle lies Christian leaders can believe: Everyone has to like me. The problem isn't that we care about people. We should. Jesus calls us to love people, listen well, speak truth in love, and pursue healthy relationships. The problem comes when someone else's approval becomes necessary for our sense of security. In this episode, we'll look at what happens when Christian leaders confuse being Christlike with being universally liked—and what freedom looks like when we no longer need everyone's approval. I pray this blesses you! Becky

Episode 131: The Lie: My Worth is Something I Earn

Hey, Friend! Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to stop working? You finish one project, and instead of feeling satisfied, you immediately start thinking about the next one. You tell yourself you'll rest after one more meeting, one more event, one more email, one more accomplishment. Why? Because many of us have unknowingly believed a subtle lie: My worth is something I earn. As Christian leaders, we know salvation is a gift of grace. But too often, we live as though our value depends on our productivity. We confuse being faithful with being busy. We measure ourselves by what we accomplish instead of remembering who we already are in Christ. In this episode, we're exposing that lie and discovering the freedom that comes from receiving our identity instead of striving to achieve it. I pray this blesses you! Becky

  6. 131

Episode 130: The Lie: If I Say No, I'm Selfish

Hey, Friend! Have you ever said "yes" when everything inside of you wanted to say "no"? Maybe you volunteered for one more ministry, answered one more late-night text, or took on one more responsibility because saying no felt...wrong. After all, aren't Christians supposed to serve? Aren't leaders supposed to sacrifice? In this episode, we're exposing one of the most common—and most exhausting—lies Christian leaders believe: If I say no, I'm selfish. The truth is, Jesus never said yes to everyone. He didn't meet every need, accept every invitation, or heal every person who came looking for Him. Instead, He modeled something even more important: complete obedience to the Father. If you've ever struggled with guilt when setting boundaries, felt responsible for everyone's happiness, or wondered how to love people without losing yourself, this conversation is for you. I pray this blesses you, Becky

Episode 129: The Leader Sets the Tone

Hey, Friend! Leadership is about more than vision, strategy, and decision-making. Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly shaping the emotional climate of the people around us. Our teams watch how we respond to pressure, uncertainty, criticism, setbacks, and success. They often take their cues from us. In this week's episode, we're exploring a powerful leadership principle: The Leader Sets the Emotional Tone. Through stories from Scripture, we discuss how emotions spread through organizations and why healthy leadership begins with inner health. One of the key ideas from this episode is simple: What leaders carry, teams often catch. I hope this conversation encourages you as you seek to lead with wisdom, courage, and faith. Becky

Episode 128: Healthy Leaders Create Healthy Cultures

Hey, Friend! Every organization has a culture and a climate, and both are heavily influenced by leadership. Culture is what matters here. Climate is what it feels like to work here. In this episode, we explore the connection between personal leadership health and organizational health. Healthy leaders create environments marked by trust, clarity, accountability, emotional safety, and growth. Unhealthy leadership, on the other hand, often produces anxiety, confusion, defensiveness, and dysfunction. You'll learn why leadership is contagious, how leaders shape culture through everyday behaviors, and why personal formation may be the most important leadership work you'll ever do. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  9. 128

Episode 127: What Healthy Teams Feel Like

Hey, Friend! What does it actually feel like to be on your team? In the previous episode, we explored the difference between culture and climate. Culture is what matters here. Climate is what it feels like to work here. In this episode, we take that conversation one step further by exploring the characteristics of healthy team climates. Healthy teams are not perfect teams. They experience conflict, make mistakes, and navigate challenges just like every other team. The difference is that healthy teams create environments where people feel safe enough to be honest, accountable, and willing to repair relationships when strain occurs. We'll discuss emotional safety, trust, accountability, consistency, and why talented people often leave unhealthy environments. Most importantly, we'll explore how leaders can cultivate team climates where people flourish rather than merely survive. I pray this blesses you! Becky

  10. 127

Episode 126: What You Tolerate becomes the Culture

Hey, Friend, Most leaders focus on vision, strategy, and execution. Far fewer realize that culture is often shaped by something much more subtle: what leaders are willing to overlook and even tolerate. Organizations rarely drift into unhealthy cultures because someone intended it. More often, they arrive there through a series of avoided conversations, unchecked behaviors, and exceptions that gradually become expectations. In this episode, we explore one of the most challenging truths in leadership: every tolerated behavior teaches people what is acceptable. Whether you're leading a church, ministry, nonprofit, business, or team, the standards you enforce—and the ones you ignore—are constantly shaping your culture. We'll discuss why good leaders avoid difficult conversations, how fear can undermine healthy leadership, and why accountability is not the enemy of grace but often an expression of it. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  11. 126

Episode 125: You Already Have a Culture

Hey, Friend! It’s a fact. Every organization has both a culture and a climate. Culture is what matters here. Climate is what it feels like to work here. The challenge for leaders is that these two realities are not always aligned. A ministry may say it values collaboration, but people may experience fear. A church may say it values people, but staff and volunteers may feel unseen. A team may value innovation, but the climate may discourage risk-taking. This episode explores the important distinction between culture and climate and why healthy leaders intentionally shape both. You'll learn how leaders influence climate every day through communication, consistency, emotional steadiness, and trust-building behaviors. You'll also discover practical questions to help you assess the emotional atmosphere of your team and identify gaps between what your organization says matters and what people actually experience. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  12. 125

Episode 124: Every Hire Changes a Culture

Hey, Friend! Did you know that every person who joins or leaves a team changes the culture of that organization? In this episode, we explore how culture is shaped more by behavior than by vision statements — and why emotional health, trust, and accountability matter so deeply in leadership. We discuss: what actually creates culture emotional contagion on teams how one unhealthy person can destabilize an environment why transitions are harder than leaders admit rebuilding trust after unhealthy leadership protecting emotional safety and accountability what leaders must protect at all costs If you lead teams, staff, ministries, or organizations, this conversation will help you think more intentionally about the environments you are creating. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  13. 124

Episode 123: The Myth of Unlimited Availability

Hey, Friend! In today’s episode, we explore what happens when leaders confuse availability with faithfulness and why healthy boundaries are essential for long-term ministry and leadership. We'll discuss: Why boundaries are not selfish but an act of stewardship The difference between accessibility and availability The hidden costs of the myth of unlimited availability How burnout, resentment, and emotional exhaustion often grow from unhealthy expectations Why Jesus regularly withdrew from crowds, protected His time with the Father, and did not meet every demand placed upon Him The fears that often drive weak boundaries, including fear of rejection, conflict, and disappointing others Practical boundaries for volunteers, staff, congregants, technology, and communication How healthy leaders serve from sustainability rather than exhaustion I pray this blesses you, Becky

  14. 123

Episode 122: Having the Courage to Disappoint Others

Hey, Friend! Many leaders get caught up in people pleasing because they don’t have the courage to risk disappointing anyone. In this episode, we explore: why people pleasing develops how ministry culture can reinforce unhealthy patterns the emotional cost of over-functioning boundaries, honesty, and emotional health how leaders can serve people without losing themselves If you constantly feel responsible for everyone’s emotions, struggle to say no, replay conversations, or fear disappointing people, this conversation is for you. I pray this blesses you, Becky

  15. 122

Episode 121: Leading from the Second Chair

Hey, Friend! Some of the most influential leaders never sit in the first chair. They aren't the senior pastor, CEO, executive director, or final decision maker. Yet they carry enormous responsibility, shape culture, support vision, absorb tension, and influence outcomes every day. In this episode, "Leading from the Second Chair," we explore the unique realities of leadership without final authority. We'll discuss: the emotional tension of second-chair leadership influence versus control loyalty and honesty resentment, over-functioning, and burnout how emotionally mature leaders shape healthy cultures Drawing from the stories of Aaron, Jonathan, Barnabas, Abigail, Timothy, and Nehemiah, we'll discover that some of Scripture's most influential leaders led faithfully from supporting roles. If you've ever carried responsibility without authority, felt overlooked, struggled to speak honestly, or wondered whether your influence really matters, this conversation is for you. One of the key reminders from this episode: "You do not have to sit in the first chair to shape the room." Listen now and share with a leader who needs this encouragement today. Becky

Episode 114: When You are Criticized and it Gets Inside You (Leadership that Doesn't Lose You Series)

There’s a kind of criticism that’s easy to move past. And then there’s the kind that lingers. The kind you replay in your mind… the kind that quietly chips away at your confidence… the kind that makes you second-guess yourself in moments you used to feel clear. Episode 88: Why Authentic Leadership Feels Risky

Hey, Friend! Authenticity in leadership is one of those buzzwords that everyone loves to praise—until they see what it really costs. We’re told: “Be an authentic leader.” But no one tells us how risky it feels. Because true authenticity isn’t about oversharing, being liked, or saying whatever’s on your mind. It’s about: Admitting you were wrong—fully. Holding to your values when it costs you. Saying the hard truth when it would be easier to stay quiet. Choosing trust over approval. That doesn’t always feel comfortable. In fact, it often feels lonely. But here’s the reward: authenticity builds trust, not just popularity. And trust is what endures. I unpack all of this in my latest podcast episode: “Why Authentic Leadership Feels Risky.” Because the next time you’re tempted to polish, perform, or self-protect, you may find that the most powerful thing you can do is simply be real. I pray this blesses you, Becky
