Self-Love, Healing and Choosing Joy: One Woman’s Story of Starting Over

Some conversations just leave you smiling the whole way through, and this was definitely one of them.In this week's episode I’m joined by the wonderful Ami Yeasmin @ami_bisbrooke_artisans. If you already follow Ami online, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say she brings so much joy into the world. Her energy is infectious. But behind that joy is a story of resilience, heartbreak, healing and learning to truly live in the present moment. Before COVID, Ami and her husband were running a thriving sourdough bakery together after leaving their previous careers. Life was busy, exciting and growing quickly. But in a short space of time everything changed. Her marriage broke down, and soon after Ami was diagnosed with cancer. What followed was one of the most difficult periods of her life. But it also became the beginning of something new.During her recovery, Ami began thinking deeply about joy. Not the big, once in a lifetime kind of happiness we’re often told to chase, but the small everyday moments that remind us we’re alive. The kind of joy we can choose, even when life feels messy or uncertain. One symbol that carried her through that time was a pair of red boots she promised herself she would wear when she was strong enough again. Those red boots eventually led to something unexpected… dancing. What started as a spontaneous moment dancing in public after cancer treatment has become Ami’s way of spreading joy and reminding people that it’s never too late to express yourself, take up space and live fully in the moment. This conversation is honest, uplifting and full of beautiful reminders about self-acceptance, forgiveness and learning to shine as you are.Ami’s journey from teacher to running a successful sourdough bakery• The impact COVID had on their lives and relationship• Navigating separation later in life• Receiving a cancer diagnosis and the emotional toll of treatment• Letting go of people pleasing and learning true self-acceptance• Why Ami believes joy is something we can choose every day• The story behind her red boots• How dancing in public became a powerful act of healing• Why shining as yourself gives others permission to do the same“When you shine from the source of yourself, you give other people permission to shine too.”If you enjoy this episode, please do share it with someone who might need a little reminder that joy can still be found, even in the most unexpected places.Keep being fabulousRachel x

Why Hot Flash is the talk of Yorkshire right now, with Jan Birley.

“Hot Flash” is the talk of Yorkshire right now. It isn’t just a romantic comedy about menopause… it actually feels like a real shift in seeing midlife women being seen on screen. Because how many times have we seen women at this stage of life properly represented on screen? Writer and producer Jan Birley has created something that feels real. Real women. Real stories. Not glossy. Not pretending. Jan shares her journey of creating the film, the importance of representation in the film industry, and the unique challenges faced in bringing this project to life.Hot Flash is a romantic comedy celebrating Yorkshire grit and wit. A failed menopausal hairdresser is sacked from her job. Needing to fund her son's school trip, she discovers the only way to true success is to be true to herself. Even amidst brutal brain fog...One of Yorkshire’s favourite actors Gaynor Faye will be taking the lead and our very own Primed For Life, Christine Talbot will be featuring as herself. You may even spot a few more familiar faces appearing too!Jans own story of how she’s stepped out of her comfort zone to make this film happen is another example of how its never too lat to follow your dreams and you just don' t know what it may lead to.I had the pleasure of attending the press day and took a sneaky peak behind the scenes. The energy on set is amazing, you can tell there is so much passion and love for this film, I can't wait to see come to life.We need more of this. Ever felt like society wants you to be invisible after 60?" Fiona Lambert is here to change that narrative!

Fiona Lambert on Ageism, Reinvention & Why Women Are Far From Invisible After 60In a society where age is too often mistaken for irrelevance,  Fiona Lambert is powerfully rewriting the narrative. In this inspiring episode, Fiona—one of the UK fashion industry’s most influential figures—shares her extraordinary journey of reinvention, confidence, and purpose after 60. After a 37-year career shaping major high-street brands including Jaeger, for Marks & Spencer, Next, and George, Fiona found herself facing redundancy just three months before her 60th birthday. What could have been a breaking point became a defining moment.Fiona opens up about the emotional impact of ageing in an industry obsessed with youth, admitting, “The sound of saying I was 60 felt old in my head.” That feeling will resonate deeply with many women who don’t recognise themselves in society’s narrow definition of ageing. This conversation tackles ageism head-on, including the stark reality that while people over 60 make up a quarter of the population and control over a quarter of the UK’s wealth, they appear in just 3% of advertising. Rather than shrinking, Fiona chose visibility—and action.Determined to explore what her body was truly capable of, Fiona committed to fitness, strength, and health. She went on to share her  personal training and nutrition, with realistic, accessible fitness advice for women with busy lives. What began as a personal challenge soon evolved into a thriving online platform and a renewed sense of purpose. At the heart of Fiona’s philosophy is mindset. Drawing on her background in life coaching, she explains why comparison is never a strong enough motivator and why personal purpose matters far more than chasing someone else’s image. Her bestselling book,  Invincible Not Invisible, reflects this belief—encouraging women not just to change their bodies, but to reclaim confidence, visibility, and self-belief.Fiona also shares the five principles that underpin her approach to life and wellbeing:Purpose. Preparation. Perseverance. People. Positivity. This episode is a rallying call for women to prioritise self-care, challenge outdated narratives around age, and step fully into the next chapter of their lives—with strength, clarity, and confidence. As Fiona so powerfully asks:“Why should women become invisible at 60?”Topics covered:Ageism and visibility • Reinvention after 60 • Women and confidence • Fitness and strength over 60 • Mindset and purpose • Life after redundancy • Fashion industry insights • Personal development • Nutrition and wellbeing • Empowerment at every ageThank you for listening to the Liberté – Free to Be podcast. Menopause for men: Breaking Down the Myths with Author and menopause expert Niki Woods

When menopause enters the conversation, it's often spoken about in whispers or left unspoken altogether, especially when it comes to opening the conversation with the men in our lives.  Niki Woods is a peri/menopause educator and coach of midlife professional women and is bringing a refreshing candour to the topic as she discusses her book, "A Man's Guide to Menopause,".  As a menopause expert , coach and author, Niki's unique perspective on why men should be looped into these discussions—in both personal and professional spheres—could be a game-changer for relationships and workplace dynamics.  Her approach not only offers a lifeline to couples navigating this life phase but also opens up a dialogue that can transform how men support their partners and colleagues. Imagine a workplace where menopause isn't a taboo but a topic of discussion that leads to mutual understanding and support. This week's episode takes you behind the scenes of men-only workshops designed to foster this change. Here, in these pockets of open dialogue, men unravel their concerns, learn how to become allies, and confront the broader issues of gendered ageism. Niki breaks down the barriers to communication, urging a rethinking of how we see ageing, particularly for women, and positioning empathy as a cornerstone of professional and personal growth.  Niki shared some great advice for women interested in the holistic approach to health during menopause. From the subtle power of nutrition and exercise to the complexities of accessing hormonal treatments and the undercurrents of feminism that influence perceptions of women's health, our discussion casts a wide net. With Niki's book as a catalyst, we're championing the message that a deeper comprehension of menopause is more than a women's issue—it's a societal imperative that benefits us all.  Key Points 01:33 - 02:54) Empowering Midlife Women in Work (80 Seconds)  (11:09 - 12:38) Men-Only Sessions for Better Learning (89 Seconds)  (22:35 - 23:27) Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy (51 Seconds)  (31:41 - 32:42) Managing Stress Through Enjoyable Exercise (61 Seconds)  (35:55 - 36:40) Championing Women and Menopause Support (45 Seconds) Find out more about Niki Woods Niki is a former HR Manager turned peri/menopause educator and coach of midlife professional women. The idea that life slows down as we get older is one of the biggest myths we’re taught. In this episode of Liberté – Free to Be, I’m joined by Emma Sayle, founder of the global sexual empowerment brand Killing Kittens, for an honest, thought-provoking conversation about female sexuality, confidence, desire and liberation later in life.Emma launched Killing Kittens in 2005 after recognising a growing demand from independent women who wanted adult spaces that reflected their values — safe, inclusive environments where women were in control of the narrative. What began as a response to that need has since grown into an internationally recognised community, welcoming all genders and sexualities while always centring women’s empowerment.Today, Killing Kittens is a global phenomenon with a thriving online community and events held around the world. Its mission remains clear: to help women feel confident in their bodies, access pleasure without shame, and explore sexuality on their own terms at any age in adulthood. In this candid conversation, Emma and I explore:Why women’s sexual freedom is still judged more harshly than men’sThe importance of female-led spaces in modern sexuality and dating cultureHow confidence and desire can evolve later in lifeBreaking down stigma, shame and double standards around female pleasureWhy inclusivity, consent and safety are central to empowermentHow women can reclaim their narrative after the end of a relationship or marriageThis episode is especially relevant for anyone questioning long-held beliefs about sex, confidence and self-expression, or feeling curious about alternative communities that challenge societal norms. My hope is that this conversation leaves you feeling informed, open-minded and empowered — whether this world feels familiar or completely new to you.(00:01) – Empowering Women Through ConversationChallenging outdated narratives around age, confidence and desire.(06:05) – Female Sexuality & EmpowermentWhy pleasure, agency and self-expression matter at every stage of adulthood.(13:30) – Global Party Culture & InclusivityHow Killing Kittens creates safe, respectful spaces for all genders and sexualities.(18:46) – Breaking Stigma & Sexual Double StandardsAddressing shame, judgment and the imbalance in how men and women are perceived.(28:24) – Navigating Conversations Around Gender & SexualityWhy open dialogue is essential for understanding and respect.(36:42) – Reclaiming Confidence & Sexual FreedomEncouraging women to explore desire without apology or fear.Discover more about Killing Kittens: https://www.killingkittens.comFollow Emma Sayle on Instagram for insights on empowerment, business and sexuality.Thank you for listening to the Liberté – Free to Be podcast. Frightened to Fabulous: A Journey of Resilience, Self-Discovery, and Empowerment

Have you ever felt paralyzed by fear, unable to make the leap towards the life you truly desire?   Today's podcast features Heidi Fossali, life coach and author of "Frightened to Fabulous," where she recounts the pivotal moments of leaving an unhappy marriage and the resilience it took to rebuild her life as a single mother abroad. Her journey isn't just a story of personal victory; it's a beacon for anyone searching for the courage to pursue authentic joy and passion.  I first met Heidi at a Noon retreat hosted by Eleanor Mills and we’ve been following each other’s journey ever since. Heidi has an infectious zest for life and is helping other women find theirs too.  Discovering who we truly are is often a journey that intensifies in our midlife years, where change becomes not just a want, but a need. Heidi and I discuss the emotional whirlwinds that accompany these transformations, whether it's navigating the new terrain of divorce, redefining a career path, or adjusting to the empty nest when children leave home.  Heidi shares, with permission, some of her clients’ own transformations, from overlooked to full of confidence is a powerful testament to the strength that lies in every woman. Moreover, we delve into the pressing issues that women in their 40s and beyond face—from the nuances of menopause to the importance of rekindling a relationship with one's body and spirit.  We address the deep-seated topic of nurturing self-worth and the radiance that comes from within. Heidi highlights how true self-confidence is cultivated through internal clarity, nourishment, and physical well-being, rather than superficial makeovers. Whilst a flash of red lipstick might give you a quick lift , it’s the inner work that will make a difference?  Heidi has lived in some fabulous locations, including Los Angeles, London and now South of France and she shares her global insights on aging and self-assurance, urging us to empower the next generation to break free from self-limiting beliefs.  As we close, we tackle the profound impact of authenticity and community support—encouraging listeners to embrace their own narratives, to speak their truth, and connect with a world that thrives on shared stories of empowerment. From Vintage Threads to Sustainable Futures with creative collaborator, Tee Gray

Have you ever pondered the threads that stitch together the story of our lives with the clothes we wear?  Tee Gray, whose roots in Leeds’s historic fashion industry, blossomed amidst the vibrant fashion and clubbing scene of 80's London, takes us on an eclectic journey. As we traverse the city's evolving music and fashion landscape, Tee's transformation from psychiatric nursing to a creative life in fashion embodies the synergy of personal growth and sartorial expression.  Tee shares candid stories of overcoming setbacks and celebrates the pro-aging movement's spotlight at London Fashion Week to an opportunity to shoot with Rankin.  Fashion's fleeting trends often overshadow the pressing need for sustainability and ethical production; this episode challenges the status quo.  Tee's insights spotlight the resurgence of garment altering and ethical consumption, particularly among millennials. Tee shares her own love of collecting preloved jewellery and iconic fashion pieces that she not only incorporates in to her own wardrobe but also sells in her TrueStreetCurator  collection, available at the Red House in York.  This episode is a patchwork of perspectives, experiences, and revelations that promise to leave you inspired to create a wardrobe that tells your unique story, one that's responsibly chic and timelessly fashionable.  I had the pleasure of interviewing Tee in the newly launched Trad Collective store in the heart of Leeds, which was the perfect place to discuss our love for pre-loved and reworked sustainable fashion. I came away with an amazing reworked vintage denim jacket with a fabulous Frida Kahlo print on the back. It’s definitely worth a visit!  I left our conversation feeling not only inspired but even more determined to fight against ageism in the fashion industry because it’s women’s voices like Tee’s that need to be part of the fashion forward conversation. Older women have lived experiences and wisdom to share that the next generation can learn so much from.   To find out more about Tee Gray visit- IG @truestreetcurators X  @truemuse1 Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/tee-gray/  I'll be back in a fortnight but in the meantime.   Keep being fabulous   Rachel x  https://linktr.ee/libertefreetobe

Ep.136 It's time to lift the stigma around Lichen Sclerosus and Vulva Cancer with Kay Binnersley

Kay Binnersley is an award winning hairdresser and bridal hairstylist who has been in the industry for over 37 years. Working for herself from the age of 18, first as a freelancer then the last 26 years in her own salon. But Kay isn't here to talk about hair, she's here to help lift the stigma around open up the conversation around Lichen Sclerosus and Vulva cancer. If you're sat there thinking you've never heard of Lichen Sclerosus, neither had Kay until she was diagnosed with the condition recently. She is now on a mission to help educate other women especially as it's a subject no one wants to talk about. Conversations around breast cancer are now positively shared, Deborah James did an amazing job at lifting the taboo around bowel cancer yet mention the 'Vulva' word and we still find it uncomfortable. So what is Lichen Sclerosus? Lichen sclerosus is a long-term (chronic) skin condition. It causes the skin to become thin, white, and wrinkly. Lichen sclerosus may occur in men, women, and children at any age. But it is most common in women older than age 50, which is even more reason for us to be talking about it! The symptoms of vulval LS vary from person to person. Sometimes, it causes no symptoms and is discovered during tests for other health problems. The affected area of the vulva may: be very itchy and sore, which may be worse at night change colour, becoming pale or white develop small areas of bruising that look like blood blisters be more fragile than normal skin and possibly split The causes of vulval LS are not known. It is not possible to get LS through sexual contact. It is not a sexually transmitted disease and is not infectious. LS is also not caused by hormonal problems or an allergic reaction. Women over 50 are often struggling with other issues like cystitis, vaginal dryness and thrush which can all masque these symptoms and as not enough is known about the condition it can often be left undiagnosed. If left there is a chance it can lead to vulva cancer so it's so important we are made aware of these symptoms. Knowledge is power! Topics covered- Who is Kay Binnersley? Passion for hair First symptoms- diagnosis Dealing with pain The impact it had on Kay's confidence and daily life Knowledge is power Statistics (1 in 100 women will be diagnosed with it and 5 in 100 will turn cancerous) Why do we find it so difficult to call our vulva by it's real name? How can we lift the stigma around this The petition to gain funding for research for a cure and support for those diagnosed. Why Kay is using her voice to create awareness around this condition Don't put off going to the doctors if you are worried about any symptoms Kays positive attitude to life There is currently no cure, no remission, for Lichen Sclerosus only strong steroid ointments which put condition into remission at best. There is some evidence to suggest it may be an auto immune disorder and whilst it can affect men , it is mainly seen in women. Sufferers can live in pain and be affected physically and mentally, but it can be misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and can increase the risk of certain cancers. Sign the petition There is currently no funding available for research to find a cure , support patients and help raise awareness. If you'd like to sign the petition to get this conversation on the table here's the link, your support is much appreciated. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/632780 What does Free to Be mean to Kay? Ep.134' Self compassion is Key' with award winning mental health activist Miranda Arieh

I first met this week’s guest , Miranda Arieh as we both stood nervously outside BBC Radio Leeds station before we entered another round of the BBC Leeds radio “New Voices” presenter competition. I managed to make it to the final 5 but they were only taking 2 presenters, so it wasn’t meant to be. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the world of radio and presenting and whilst some may have seen it as a failure, I saw it as a great opportunity and as this is my 134th podcast interview I think it turned out ok. Miranda is now regularly heard on Radio Leeds sharing her work around mental health and I have loved following her ever since.*take a look at some of Miranda’s extensive media/radio coverage Miranda Arieh is an award-winning mental health activist, public speaker and spiritual coach from Leeds, UK. Following a lengthy stay in an adolescent psychiatric unit at 14 years old, Miranda learned first-hand, how cold the medical model of mental health treatment can be and set out to learn a better way to alleviate my suffering. She went on course after course, ate up books of spiritual teachers, and decided to dedicate her life to transforming my attitudes, trigger reactions and life-long patterns. Sure enough, she started to recognize that all the triggers she felt were an opportunity for spiritual growth and began to enjoy the process of learning. Of getting to know herself, befriend herself, hold herself… Miranda felt let down by a mental health system where many patients were set up to fail. A system that is not recovery-focused; a system that puts ‘managing symptoms’ above healing. An in-built culture of ‘survive’ not ‘thrive’, awash with a river of stigma flooding through the system. So, she decided to go look from the inside. After over a decade of finding her feet and securing roles at some of the leading mental health charities, including Mind, Community Links and Time To Change, Miranda started to be invited to share her story up and down the country at mental health conferences, awareness-raising events, on the radio and television. Now, working as Network Mental Health Lead for the NHS BHR Primary Care Network in her hometown of Leeds, Miranda founded The HEROES (Healing, Education and Recovery of Emotional Strength) Groupwork Programme. This is an 8 week/20-hour educational therapeutic treatment programme that she has designed from scratch for patients from some of the most deprived areas in Leeds to join.  Looking to expand this service throughout the NHS in 2023 and create a movement, not just a treatment. The foundation of all the work that Miranda does has self-compassion at the core as a ‘bridge’ to practising presence and being able to live in the present moment. Practising presence is the essence of inner peace. You may even start to realise that the present moment is, in fact, all that really exists…  ‘The most important relationship you will ever have in your life is the one you have with yourself’. Ep.133 Don’t Fear the Queer with Beyond the Binary founder Alex Jay Lynam

I first heard Alex Jay Lynam speak at Dani Wallace’s Bee Inspired event in March and I was so struck by their Don’t Fear the Queer talk which left a powerful impression on me. Since then I started to question myself and the work I do on my podcast. Was I really showing up and creating a fully inclusive space for women on my platform, and if not why?  Looking over the 130 guests I’ve invited on the show so far, I don’t think I’ve ever had an open conversation with someone from the gay or queer community. I’m holding myself accountable as I think I’ve been avoiding the topic for fear of getting things wrong, not wanting to offend people, saying the wrong thing, and upsetting somebody. Listening to Alex made me realise that we all have an opportunity in whatever work we’re doing to include and show our support for people from the LGBTQ community. From the age of 5 Alex had a love of musical theatre and they had the opportunity of working with a range of celebrities in theatre and TV.  From the age of 10 they were determined to be in the West End, you would even have watched them on Coronation Street. By the time they were 12 Alex begun questioning their identity and sexuality and when auditioning for Masculine roles and being knocked back, the question came up, ‘Am I a boy or girl.’  Alex came out in high school as a cis female lesbian, a decision they thought would ease the uncertainty of how they felt about their body, but it got worse as they were then bullied in high school and also into college.  Not fitting the ‘stereotype’ of a musical theatre female, feeling isolated and shamed, Alex dropped out of college.   The following years saw Alex hit the party life in Manchester hard, into alcohol and substance misuse.  Their mental health declined further, falling into abusive and toxic relationships.  Alex felt there was no light at the end of the tunnel, with little support and guidance around the questions of gender and self-discovery, they felt alone. Hearing their story really hit home just how important our role is in showing up and  supporting anyone we know that may be coming out. It’s easy to assume once they’ve taken that brave step then the weight drops off their shoulders, but if there isn’t that open acceptance from society how do they feel valued?  Alex’s life was spiralling out of control and at the age of 22 they were arrested; they were given the option to change their path or go to prison. Thankfully Alex chose the latter and completed a journey of rehabilitation, learning how to find and build their self-love.  They finally got to place when they could embrace their true self and came out as non-binary. Alex has used their life experience along with their previous work with young people and vulnerable adults in all different settings, to create Beyond the Binary. With a passion to help schools, companies, families, and individuals around LGBTQIA+ inclusion through training, consultancy, and public speaking, so that everyone can be seen and heard unapologetically as themselves.    We all have a responsibility to make sure no one is left out of the active inclusion conversation. Alex reminds us that it’s ok to get things wrong, use the experience to learn and have honest and open conversations. What does Free to Be mean to Alex? “Free to be means for me to be my whole self and be my whole self in the spaces that I take up and being able to be safe in the spaces that I am. Being able to be visibly queer and not have to worry that I’m going to be hit with discrimination or abuse”. Whilst it’s great that June is Pride month this should not just be a token gesture so I’m making a commitment today to make sure I include and seek out more midlife stories from those in the LGBTQ community who want to share their stories. https://beyondthebinarywithalex.co.uk/about-alex-inclusivity-advocate/ https://www.instagram.com/beyondthebinary4/ Keep being fabulous   Rachel https://linktr.ee/libertefreetobe

EP.132. The 9 to 5 Menopause with Fay Reid

I first met Fay when we were both shooting with Refinery29 for an Avon campaign and I adore her energy and attitude to life. Fay Reid is the founder of 9 to 5 Menopause - which she set up on Instagram after starting the menopause and finding there were no women she could relate to, when researching her symptoms. Fay launched 9to5menopause on social media, initially just to share tips and present menopause in a more realistic light (not old, white, and grey haired as usually depicted online). When Fay started going through the menopause there was a lack of information –  “I started having symptoms at the age of 46 but the people who were talking about menopause were White, affluent women who didn’t have a job. They recommended private clinics, nutritionists, and yoga. That is not my life, I’ve got a job to go to. So, I started 9 to 5 Menopause, because there were no women in the workplace talking about menopause. I wanted to champion the average woman who’s got to run for a train in the morning and has to sit through a meeting having hot flushes" Fay’s aim is to highlight and inform women of all ages and ethnicities that the menopause is nothing to fear and to share her tips for navigating this transition in a woman's life.  I’ve been a big fan of the work Fay is doing and I’m also inspired be her new found love of weight training, which she shares on her instagram account. Gyms and exercise classes can often feel a bit intimidating as an older woman, but Fay has really embraced the challenge and her progress is amazing. Another example that it’s never too late to try a new sport or activity!   Subjects covered- ·      Who is Fay Reid? 3 words that describe Fay and why she chose them. ·      Behind the scenes of our Refinery29 shoot day. ·      Fay shares her own experience of the peri and menopause. ·      Lack of representation for black women going through the menopause. ·      Keeping it real on social media. ·      Grieving for the loss of her mum.  ·      The challenges of midlife.  ·      Bouncing back and changing direction later in life. ·      The menopause comes in all ages , sizes and colours. ·      Discovering weight training and the positive impact it’s had on her life. ·      Representation and inclusivity matters. ·      What’s next?   What does ‘Free to Be’ mean Fay Reid? Raising Body-Confident Children: Supporting Positive Body Image with Anupa Roper

Raising body-confident children. Anupa Roper shares practical advice on supporting positive body image and self-worth on Liberté – Free to Be.I spend a lot of time talking about body confidence in women over 40 — but what about the next generation? In this episode of Liberté – Free to Be, I’m joined by Anupa Roper, also known as Sparrowlegs — a former primary school teacher, children’s author, body image educator and mum of two — to explore how we can support children and young people to grow up with healthier body image and self-worth.Do you worry about your child’s body image?Do you sometimes struggle with what to say — or not say — about bodies, food and appearance?Anupa understands this deeply. For years, she allowed the label “skinny” to shape her confidence, choices and sense of worth. Constant comments about her body — being told how small she was, questioned about whether she ate enough — left her feeling uncomfortable in her own skin. Today, she uses that lived experience to empower children and families to break free from body image pressures. In our conversation, Anupa shares:How body image issues can affect children of all body typesWhy comments we think are “harmless” can have lasting impactHow parents, carers and grandparents can model healthier languageThe importance of body neutrality and self-acceptance from an early ageHow to help children feel confident without focusing on appearanceWe also talk about the power of reclaiming labels. Anupa was nicknamed “Sparrowlegs” as a child — a name she once found hurtful, but now owns with pride. That journey inspired her beautifully illustrated children’s book Sparrowlegs, aimed at under-7s, about a young sparrow learning to love the feathers she’s in.It’s a gentle, powerful reminder that confidence isn’t about changing our bodies — it’s about changing the story we tell about them.Women like Anupa are creating a positive ripple effect for future generations. And all of us have a role to play — through awareness, compassion and the language we use every day.For Anupa, Free to Be means:“Being happy in our own skin — on the outside and inside. Learning to be comfortable with who we are, without pressure to be anyone else.”What does Free to Be mean to you?Visit Anupa’s website: www.sparrowlegs.comThank you for listening to the Liberté – Free to Be podcast. Ep.125.The Big Rebrand and why I'm saying goodbye to Out of the Bubble !

Going solo for a quick catch up and to tell you all why I'm saying goodbye to Out of the Bubble and hello to Liberté-Free to Be! Don't panic, I'm not going anywhere but I am having a big rebrand and embracing change. Since I first started the podcast in 2018 I've been on my own journey of growth alongside the 124 women I've interviewed. I started Out of the Bubble because when I first started modelling at 46 I was often overwhelmed with imposter syndrome, had wobbles of insecurity and self doubt and I gained great strength and inspiration from other women's stories on social media. I wanted to create a platform for these women to create a positive ripple effect on other women in midlife. The name came from my own life changes, such as divorce that took me to a new stage of life where I just had to step out of my own bubble and I've never looked back. I'm 53 this May and I feel the most aligned and confident now than at any stage of my adult life and that's exciting. It's a liberating feeling to stop worrying about if you fail, to stop caring what others might be thinking of you and to embrace all of you, flaws and all. Which is what's led me to the rebrand decision, I started feeling like I'd stepped out of the bubble and was ready to move on, I hope I've taken lots of you with me! The podcast will now be called Liberté- Free To Be and It will be business as usual just with an extra sparkle of my new vava voom! My new logo reflects where I'm at right now in life and it feels good to be showing up this way. I will be launching the next series 6, on Tuesday 2nd May. Don't worry I'll be back before then to keep you update with all the details! What does Free to Be mean to you? Back soon but in the meantime... Keep being fabulous Rachel x

Ep.124 Are you ready to ditch the alcohol? Meet Claire Owen the Soberholic

Are you one of the many that ditched the alcohol for a dry January this year, only to go straight back on it February?  One of the things I've noticed now I'm going through the menopause is the effect alcohol has on my mental wellbeing, it increases my anxiety levels and zaps my energy so I've cut right back. I still have the odd G & T but I can imagine ditching it all together at some point so I was very interested to talk with Claire Owen. Meet Claire Owen , aka the Soberholic. Claire went from drinking 100 units a week (10 bottles of wine) to quitting and has never looked back! I know lots of women like myself that are going through the menopause or peri-menopause and alcohol is no longer working for them. So many of us continue to drink , partly out of habit and perhaps because it's so ingrained in our culture but what would it feel like to stop?  After volunteering in a recovery clinic, Claire retrained as a life coach; after being inspired to question her own relationship with alcohol after watching her good friend's health decline. She now supports women worldwide to take back control without judgement, shame or fear.   Claire's mission is to rebrand sober as the goal-seeking choice for women who desire more than a bottle of wine after another stressful day. Her service inspires women to put down the glass and aim for the life of their dreams.   Claire is now 4 years alcohol free and her husband's joined her too with almost 2 years alcohol free and she had no idea life could be so good without wine!   Food for thought! Ep.123 Out of the Bubble- Special Mothers Day episode- It's time to meet my mum

What better way for me to celebrate Mother's Day this year than to invite my own mum along for a chat. I started this podcast because I wanted women over 40 to have a platform to share their stories , to be heard and feel seen so I couldn't think of a better way to show my mum some love than to include her in this conversation.  How often do we really sit down and listen to older members of our family and friends , It's easy to forget they had a life before being a parent and I loved this weeks chat with my mum. To say that my mum has had her share of battles along the way is an under statement yet her attitude to life has always remained positive and she has shown my sister Deborah and I such strength of character.  My mum has suffered with Multiple Sclerosis since I was 2 years old and has had a rollercoaster life with remissions and long periods of illness but her upbeat attitude has helped carry her through. Unfortunately she now has a rare blood cancer to cope with and as we expected she is tackling this with her usual tenacious and pragmatic attitude. Glenda will be 78 this year and there's been many times when she was told she wouldn't make it so every moment spent together is even more precious.   Subjects covered-  - Adoption  - Leaving home at 16 an moving to another place solo  - Music & Life in the 60's   - Being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 27 - the impact that had her life and our the family   - Multiple Sclerosis Society charity It is estimated that more than 130,000 people live with multiple sclerosis in the UK. MS damages nerves in your body and makes it harder to do everyday things like walking, talking, eating and thinking. It can be relentless, painful and disabling. Across the UK more than 240 local MS Society groups provide support and information to anyone living with MS. The groups, all run by volunteers, offer a brilliant way to meet others affected by the condition and help reduce isolation. A wide range of services and support are available, from social activities and exercise classes, to therapies like physio and massage. The free MS Helpline receives thousands of calls every year from people with MS or their friends, family and carers. Specially trained staff and volunteers provide confidential and free emotional support and information on anything to do with MS, including symptoms, treatments, disability benefits and exercise. Ep.121 Representation Matters. "Celebrate the Grey" with Stephanie O'Dell.

Those that have followed me for awhile will already know how passionate I am about representation of older women in the fashion and beauty industry. We all need to see women that we can relate to, no matter what age, shape or size and it matters for our mental wellbeing. So I already knew that this weeks guest and I would have a LOT to talk about! When Stephanie O Dell started her 'Celebrate the Gray' blog little did you know she know what she was creating. Stephanie is the founder of Celebrate the grey agency, representing grey models, influencers and women over 50 to help change the ageist narrative in the fashion industry. Like me, Stephanie is passionate about updating the age of models used in marketing and giving women their power back in their ageing journey. She has built a strong following and community of like-minded women who want to change the face of aging. Celebrate The Gray Collective represents over 200 gray/silver haired “real” models. It has access to 100s of ambassadors 50+ and offers age inclusion consulting for brands and companies. Women want to be seen as they age in marketing and want their faces, bodies, voices and opinions valued and authentically represented. “We are a strong, engaged collective of women who are passionate about updating the way women are viewed as we age,” O’Dell says. “We want our facies, bodies, voices, and opinions valued and authentically represented. I believe that being a woman today means not letting anyone define you. You define you!” Stephanie is a national speaker and thought leader on age inclusion. Ep.120. How to be a happy introvert with Sarah Bryer, founder of Show Girl Coaching.

Have you ever been told you're the shy one? Or felt like you've been written off as the quiet one? I was always labelled as being ‘shy’ when I was younger and not in a positive way. The more you hear it the more you retreat but those that knew me well enough would always see the real me. For years I struggled to show my inner confidence but I could feel it in there waiting to burst out. I like my own space and I’m quietly confident but it doesn’t mean I can’t roar like a lion when needed! Confidence comes in all different shapes and sizes, loud, quiet, big, small and it’s never too late to find yours! #staytruetoyourself  Sarah Bryer worked for a well-known Insurer, looking after a team of introverts. Clever, capable women, who were being held back because they didn't shout about their achievements, they didn't network or small talk by the coffee machine. As Sarah started one of the women had just returned from stress leave. Visibly shaking as she met her. Sarah worked with these women on internal bureaucracy and navigating the company politics, manager ego's, networking and how to manage upwards. Sarah protected them until they were strong enough to do it all themselves. They managed difficult people, hosted project meetings like a boss. Picked up the phone to call people they'd only ever emailed as she watched on, knowing the research that had gone into them and the work they had done was paying off. Sarah saw first hand how their confidence was rebuilt and then her role was made redundant. This was the point where she found her purpose, to build these women up. Show Girl Coaching has been created for Introverted Women. To increase their confidence and self-awareness. Show Girl is a non-judgemental coaching practice that is 100% focused on increasing confidence and enhancing a positive mindset in smart Introverted Women. Ep.119 Out of the Bubble- I love drama in my clothes not in my life! with Rebecca Rodden, founder of Eluroom.

So many women over 40 are left feeling invisible on the high street which showed in the results in my Midlife Body Confidence survey last year when 70% of the 200 women reported feeling invisible. I will be focusing more on those small independent brands that are showing up for women of all ages, shapes and sizes this year on the podcast as we need to shine a light and support them.  Rebecca Rodden is the founder of Eluroom, offering a beautiful collection of key wardrobe pieces that you return to time and time again as you look and feel amazing in them.  Chic yet comfortable, versatile enough to travel easily with you for those 'life on the go' moments. Ep.118- Changing the age narrative in beauty with Jenni Retourné, founder of Willowberry Natural Skin.

Happy New Year!  Jenni Retourné has worked in beauty for nearly 20 years, as a beauty editor and marketing manager before launching Willowberry skincare in 2017.   Championing Age Without Apology, Willowberry was born from Jenni’s desire to provide natural skincare designed especially for the needs of grown-up skin, without telling women to 'reverse' their faces.    Jenni campaigns for better age diversity in beauty and launched the Age Without Apology Pledge, with the goal to change the perception, representation and language of age and ageing in beauty and ensure that age is celebrated and revered, not feared.   Willowberry's work towards this has been featured in the national media and recognised by the British Beauty Council Jenni is also on the Diversity and Inclusion committee to represent age diversity in the beauty industry.    Willowberry carried out a survey with 1000 women and 97% wanted to see more older women in beauty campaigns, Let’s hope that conversations like these can create a ripple effect for change in the beauty industry.   One thing for sure is Jenni’s passion and commitment to be part of the conversation.   https://www.willowberry.co.uk   Don't miss any of the inspiring Out of the Bubble women, you can go and subscribe at www.rachelperu.co.uk and come and say hello on Instagram! @rachelperu1    I'll be back in a fortnight but in the meantime   Keep being fabulous   Rachel x   https://linktr.ee/outofthebubble

Ep.116 Going solo- Sharing my thoughts on the Midlife Body Confidence survey results

I decided to carry out this Midlife Body Confidence survey to gauge how women over 40 really feel about their bodies and what impacts, positive or negative, may alter their body confidence, as this age group so often get left out of the equation. I'll be sharing my thoughts on the results over 2 podcast episodes , as you know it's a subject I am very passionate about so I had a lot to say!  What does it mean to be body confident? Body confidence is feeling good in your own skin, no matter your size, shape, or age. It's about accepting and loving yourself, just as you are. And while that might sound easy enough, achieving body confidence can be a real challenge—especially for women over 40. Think about it: By the time we reach our 40s, we've been through a lot. We've borne children, weathered breakups, and divorce, and dealt with job losses and financial setbacks. We've also been bombarded by society's unrealistic standards of beauty. As a result, it's no wonder that so many of us struggle with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. It is possible to overcome negative feelings and achieve true body confidence at any age. Here's some useful tips: 1. Accept your age One of the best things you can do for your body confidence is to accept the fact that you are no longer in your 20s (or 30s). That doesn't mean resigning yourself to a life of frumpy clothes and taking it easy on the weekends. Rather, it means accepting that your body has changed and that those changes are perfectly normal. 2. Don't compare yourself to others It's human nature to compare ourselves to others, but when it comes to body confidence, comparisons are always going to leave us feeling worse about ourselves. Instead of dwelling on what you don't have, focus on what you do have—and be grateful for it. 3. Focus on health, not looks Oftentimes, we become so focused on how we look that we forget about how we feel. But true body confidence comes from feeling our best—mentally and physically. In other words, worry less about fitting into those skinny jeans and more about eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. When you take care of yourself, you'll feel better both inside and out—and that will show in your appearance as well as in your overall sense of well-being. 4. Find something to love about your body We all have aspects of our appearance that we're self-conscious about—but instead of fixating on those things, try to find one thing that you love about your body for every aspect that you're not crazy about. For example, if you don't like your arms, think about how strong they are from all those years of carrying around kids or grocery bags. If you're not thrilled with your hips, remember how feminine they make you look. Focusing on the positive will help you see yourself in a whole new light—and feel more confident as a result." The most important thing to remember is that everyone's definition of body confidence is different—and there's no "right" way to achieve it. Just do what feels right for you—and don't be afraid to ask for help along the way! If you're struggling to love your body just as it is, consider reaching out to a therapist or counsellor who can help you learn to appreciate all that YOU are—inside and out *Data was collected anonymously, via google from between June and October 2022.
