We open the doorway with Dickey Betts and a cut from Highway Call—Betts’ masterpiece of country rock, Texas swing, and Southern musicianship. With Chuck Leavell, Vassar Clements, and an extraordinary collection of players surrounding him, Highway Call remains one of those records that deserves to be heard from beginning to end. From there, we move into one of my favorite Greg Lake performances with Emerson, Lake & Palmer, before returning to the unmistakable guitar mastery of Dickey Betts, carrying that beautiful second harmony through “Melissa.” Then we head into progressive territory with Yes and “Starship Trooper,” followed by a memorable tune from the Lads from Liverpool. Justin Hayward in his prime with The Moody Blues leads us into a stretch where harmony takes center stage—The Grateful Dead and “Sugar Magnolia,” Poco, and a wonderful helping of the blues. The signal keeps moving with The Youngbloods and “Come Together,” followed by Poco's terrific “You Better Think Twice.” Then we settle in with Stephen Stills and explore some of the remarkable music surrounding his years with Manassas, Buffalo Springfield, and CSN&Y: “So Begins the Task” “Four Days Gone” “4 + 20” Three songs, three different moments, and one of the unmistakable voices of an extraordinary era in American music. Later tonight, we turn toward the sophisticated side of rock and roll with Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and an extended dose of some excellent Steely Dan material. Nobody quite blended jazz, rock, studio perfection, strange characters, and razor-sharp songwriting the way those two did. And when it's finally time to bring the ship home, we'll lower the lights and close things out with some beautiful, mellower music from James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Joni Mitchell. Southern rock.
