Episode 17: The Thing That Changes Everything - Get Support - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 17: The Thing That Changes Everything - Get Support - Dry July, No Drama I asked my membership group what their top tips were for a really great Dry July - one that actually feels good. And every single one of them said the same thing. Community. Getting support. Not doing it alone. I remember what a big deal it felt like to make the decision to spend money on a group program. But it changed everything for me. Because when you are in community: You stay accountable You no longer think it is a you problem You begin to understand that alcohol is an addictive substance to anybody given the right set of circumstances You stop believing it is a personal moral failure - something you just need to try harder at or have more willpower for You realise we are all the same, all navigating the same stuff And everything changes. Whether it is my program or somebody else's - free or paid - I cannot recommend finding support and community in this journey highly enough. It is one of the biggest indicators of how successful your change will be and how long lasting it will be. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. Episode 13: If You Have to Drink to Enjoy It - You Probably Don't - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 13: If You Have to Drink to Enjoy It - You Probably Don't - Dry July, No Drama If you have to drink to do something or enjoy something - you probably don't actually enjoy it. It was only when I took a break from drinking for a year that I realised half the things I was doing in my life I didn't actually enjoy. There was something about them that wasn't really working for me - and alcohol was the thing that made them bearable. My rule of thumb: if I have to drink, it's usually because: I don't like doing the thing I don't like the people involved There is something about myself I don't feel confident enough to show up as I am too tired to be present This is fawning. This is people pleasing. And alcohol is the biggest mask of them all. Because it allows us to do things we don't really want to do - while appearing to be having the time of our lives. Unfortunately it often takes having a break to realise this. And one of the hardest things for people taking a break is: Advocating for themselves Saying no Taking up space Asking to be considered Risking the disapproval of others This can feel very unsafe to our nervous system - and honestly it is the biggest reason people don't get through a month's break. So here is the question worth sitting with: Look at all the things you feel you can't cope with without a drink. Start asking - what would it be like to do them without drinking? What would be hard? More often than not we have to make some changes to our lives to allow us to take a break - and it is worth working out what those changes might be before you start. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. My free watch-on-demand masterclass talks about exactly this - and will help you work out what needs to shift before your break begins. Episode 14: Treat Yourself Like a Sick Child - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 14: Treat Yourself Like a Sick Child - Dry July, No Drama When you are taking a break from alcohol, prepare your evenings like you would for a child who is sick and needs looking after. Your evening preparation list: Get some lovely new pyjamas Make sure you have clean sheets and a bedroom that feels nice to come home to When you get in - shower, bath, clean your teeth Get into your cosiest clothes Make yourself a lovely cup of something warm Get into bed as soon as possible I know what you are thinking. But I am an adult. I deserve to stay up late. I should be able to sit on the couch with a glass of wine like a grown up. Here is the thing - a lot of people drink in the evening because otherwise it doesn't feel like they have given themselves permission to stop. To rest. To be done for the day. Being an adult is also about knowing how to take care of yourself. And treating yourself like a sick child - with gentleness, with warmth, with a really good bedtime routine - is one of the most radical things you can do for your nervous system when you are taking a break from alcohol. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. Episode 12: Get Out of Struggle Speak and Into Choice - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 12: Get Out of Struggle Speak and Into Choice - Dry July, No Drama If you think it's going to be hard, it will be. That's cognitive bias. You know that feeling when you wake up in a bad mood and everything goes to sh*t? People do the same thing with taking a break from alcohol - and it makes everything so much harder. Struggle language keeps you in willpower. Choice language gets you out. It's not "I can't drink." It's "I don't want to right now." It's not "I'm battling this." It's "I'm choosing to explore what I really need when I reach for a wine." It's not stepping into the sludge of trying. It's the clean step of choosing. Think about the difference between these two experiences: When you are lost in something and time disappears - that is flow When you are pushing against something with every ounce of energy you have - that is resistance Flow is connected to presence. Resistance lives in the past or the future. Here's what most people don't know: a craving or a trigger is actually your body desperately trying to ground itself - to come back to the present moment. Struggle language takes you further away from that. Presence brings you home. This is exactly why as part of the Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment this year we are running a present moment awareness breathwork practice alongside the program - to support everyone in learning how to live in presence rather than resistance. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. My Grounding Audio is your first step out of struggle and into presence - and it will help you identify the unmet need underneath the craving before it reaches for a drink. Episode 11: You Are Not the Problem - But You Are the Solution - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 11: You Are Not the Problem - But You Are the Solution - Dry July, No Drama Our culture convinces us from the minute we are born that we are the problem. This is perpetuated by: Everything we see on TV All the stories from AA Families having interventions Our culture's concept of discipline The idea that drinking more than we would like is a sign of weak character - a lack of willpower But the neuroscience shows that is absolutely not true. Alcohol is an addictive substance to anybody who drinks it long enough and often enough. And the amount you have to drink for it to start working in a way that makes you want it even when you prefer not to have it - is actually a very low quantity. The main reason people start drinking more than they want has nothing to do with that. It is because they start associating the relief from discomfort - the relief from emotional or physical pain - with alcohol. The big alcohol companies have done a very good job of convincing us that the problem lies with the person. Their "drink responsibly" campaign runs everywhere and continues to convince people that alcohol is a people problem - not a substance problem, coupled with a cultural and societal problem. Anybody who works in psychology will tell you: a problematic behaviour is always the symptom of the problem - not the problem itself. And this is true when we drink more than we would like. The longer we stay stuck in the cycle of self-recrimination and self-flagellation, the longer we stay stuck drinking more than we want: It stops us being able to look at the data It causes our nervous system to become dysregulated We are attacking ourselves from the inside We cannot make good decisions from that place The thing that changes everything is when we stop blaming ourselves and start looking at the data. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. My Awareness Worksheets are the perfect tool for starting to look at that data without judgement - and without the self-blame that keeps us stuck. Episode 10: Can't Do It Without a Drink? Here's What That's Really About - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With AlcoholEpisode 10: Can't Do It Without a Drink? Here's What That's Really About - Dry July, No DramaStart noticing the places where you don't just want a drink. You feel like you need one in order to do the thing at all. To get yourself to the party when you are already running on empty To sit at the dinner table To push through when every part of you wants to stop To feel confident enough to just show up To tolerate a situation - or a person - that costs you something  If alcohol is what makes those things doable - that is not a drinking problem. That is a sign that somewhere along the way your needs stopped being allowed to matter. And a lot of us have been doing that for so long we don't even know we have needs anymore. This is grey area drinking at its most invisible. It is not about the alcohol. It is about everything the alcohol is doing for you that nothing else has been allowed to do.So the tip here is not to stop drinking. It is to start noticing: Where do you have to drink to do something? What is that something asking you to suppress? What would it mean to let your needs matter in that moment instead? EPISODE 9: How to Finally Commit to a Break from Alcohol - No Willpower Required - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol EPISODE 9: How to Finally Commit to a Break from Alcohol - No Willpower Required - Dry July, No Drama There is an Afrikaans word - soutpiel - which literally translates to salt willy. It describes someone with a foot in two places, not fully committed to either. One foot in South Africa, one foot in Britain - leaving their willy in the ocean. Trying not to get banned on IG. It is a long-winded but perfectly apt description of trying to cut back on drinking without making a firm decision. A maybe is always a yes. As Yoda says - there is no try, just do. Trying, by its very nature, holds failure in its raison d'etre. Try and stand up right now. You can't - you either stand up or you don't. A decision does something completely different: It gets you out of willpower and into choice It frees your brain up for more interesting things to hyper-focus on It stops the exhausting daily negotiation with yourself about whether you are going to drink tonight If you are struggling to make the decision to take a sober curious break, sit with this question: What is not making that decision keeping me safe from experiencing? I would love to hear your answer. EPISODE 8: The Real Reason You Keep Reaching for a Drink - It's Not What You Think - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol EPISODE 8: The Real Reason You Keep Reaching for a Drink - It's Not What You Think - Dry July, No Drama You have heard of fight, flight and freeze - the nervous system safety responses. There is a fourth: fawning - or masking. And alcohol is the biggest mask of them all. The body and brain very quickly learn that drinking allows us to mask and pretend to be the human that society told us we should be - rather than the human we actually are. This is one of the most overlooked reasons people struggle to cut back on drinking. I hear this from clients all the time: I don't know why I drink. I know it's hurting me but I just keep choosing it. Like children, people do well when they can. When they feel safe to. These are not moral failings. They are very valid reasons for reaching for a drink: Not feeling confident socially without the bravado barrier of wine An inner critic that makes being with yourself feel unbearable Needing to push through exhaustion and overwhelm Drinking as the only way to give yourself permission to stop and rest This is grey area drinking at its core - and it is far more common than anyone talks about. The job here is not to solve any of this tonight. It is simply to notice - and to hold yourself with the same compassion you would give a scared child. That is where the freedom begins. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. EPISODE 7: The Sober Curious Secret - Stop Trying to Stop Drinking - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol EPISODE 7: The Sober Curious Secret - Stop Trying to Stop Drinking - Dry July, No Drama I know this sounds counterintuitive. Stick with me. All that stopping and starting - the trying, the failing, the trying again - plays havoc with our hearts and nervous systems when we are trying to cut back on drinking. In the methodology I teach, we call it The Pause. It is the very best preparation for taking a successful break from alcohol. Not white-knuckling it. Not battling. Pausing - and getting genuinely curious. If you are breaking your own heart on a daily basis - stop trying and start learning: Notice your routines, rituals and triggers around drinking Notice the actual physical and emotional experience of drinking - without judgement Become a data gatherer, not a failure counter Stop breaking your trust in yourself. Get into choice. This is how a sober curious 30-day break starts to feel effortless - and how alcohol becomes a genuine non-issue rather than something to white-knuckle your way through. EPISODE 6: How to Say No to Alcohol Without Going to War With Yourself - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol EPISODE 6: How to Say No to Alcohol Without Going to War With Yourself - Dry July, No Drama This goes against everything we have been taught about cutting back on alcohol. Instead of going into battle - lean in. A craving is not your enemy. It is just a trigger - a way of your body letting you know that something is not OK. So rather than fighting your body in distress, the invitation is to get curious and ask: Would I be having to do something I don't want to do? Would I be pushing through beyond my exhaustion? Is my busy brain driving me bananas? Is drinking the only way I can give myself permission to stop and sit down? Your body is not broken. It is resourceful. It found a solution. Our job is to find a better one - together. Part of changing our relationship with alcohol involves working out how to create those experiences the way we want them - without using alcohol. But the first step is always curiosity and awareness. Not warfare. EPISODE 5 : Why One Day at a Time Keeps You Stuck - And What to Do Instead - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 5: Why One Day at a Time Keeps You Stuck - And What to Do Instead - Dry July, No Drama I know this one is controversial. I am speaking from my own experience. For me, one day at a time meant I had to keep making decisions - which kept me in decision fatigue, which kept me in willpower. And willpower is a finite strategy for cutting back on alcohol. It also reinforces struggle, battling and hard. It ties into good and bad - binary thinking - all of which keeps us in resistance and out of choice. The alternative? Make one firm decision: I am not going to drink for 30 days. A maybe is always a yes A data point is not a failure - it is something to learn from Go into your sober curious break with the decision made and your brain freed up for more interesting things There is no try. There is only do - or do not. Thanks, Yoda. EPISODE 4: Why Thinking About Your Hangover Won't Help You Cut Back on Drinking - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Why Thinking About Your Hangover Won't Help You Cut Back on Drinking - Dry July, No Drama When we are taking time of alcohol we tend to spend a lot of time focusing on the hangover and anxiety post-drinking, and not enough time focusing on the issues in the moment. Our craving doesn't care about tomorrow. It just wants to ease our discomfort right now. If you start trying to sell tomorrow's hangover as a reason not to drink, you’ve lost it - that’s a future you problem. Whereas if we start to think about the impact in the here and now, and in the few hours after the first drink, that can be really convincing. Fear of the future, a bit like willpower and restriction, is a short-term strategy and will only last so long. What we need to is: 1. Start to become the craving, need and trigger investigator. 2. Understand what is going on in the moment. For example, if we want excitement, confidence, fun, what do we believe we or the situation will be like without that? This is the shift that makes reducing your alcohol intake feel natural rather than like white-knuckling it through the evening. This episode is part of Dry July, No Drama - a daily MidlifeAF podcast mini series with tips for cutting back on alcohol without willpower, labels or forever. EPISODE 3: The One Thing That Makes Dry July Actually Work - Especially If You Have ADHD - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 3: The One Thing That Makes Dry July Actually Work - Especially If You Have ADHD Just don't drink for 30 days. That's it. Just one thing. Don't try - as we ADHDers are prone to do - to also get fit, go FODMAP or vegan, and declutter the house. It's too much restriction and you will come undone. For those of us who are demand avoidant or prone to black-and-white perfectionist thinking, piling on extra rules will push us straight into a nervous system safety response - and we'll be pouring a glass of Chardonnay before our conscious brain has time to remind us we are taking a break. Your permission list for the next 30 days: The comfort food The rest The social media and the Netflix binge The care you would give a sick child Nothing else matters but your firm no for 30 days. And if you have a slip-up? A data point is just a sign that your body hasn't learnt how to manage something yet. Treat it with curiosity, not judgement - there is so much to learn from that. A maybe is always a yes. One thing. That's all. EPISODE 2: How to Reduce Your Drinking by Stopping Thinking About Drinking - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 2: How to Reduce Your Drinking by Stopping Thinking About Drinking - Dry July, No Drama The best way to set yourself up for success with a 30-day break from alcohol is to start noticing YOUR behaviours, thoughts, beliefs and physical experience of alcohol. You need to become a need hunter. Don't spend too much time on the after-alcohol experience - that's what people get wrong. The after experience sends us into judgement and self-flagellation, which distracts us from gathering the data we actually need to cut back on drinking for good. Instead, start noticing what was happening immediately before you got a craving: What need is being met by alcohol? What is alcohol giving you? What is it taking away? Is it like slipping into a warm bath? Do your shoulders relax? Do you sigh? What thoughts change when you drink? Note for our ND friends: noticing physical sensations can be hard - share anything that comes to mind, however small. This is the kind of super-sleuth behaviour that moves us to a take it or leave it relationship with alcohol - and makes for a really enjoyable sober curious 30-day break. Episode 1 - Why Cutting Back on Alcohol Has Nothing to Do With Willpower - Dry July, No Drama

Dry July, No Drama: Daily Tips for a Take It or Leave It Relationship With Alcohol Episode 1 - Why Cutting Back on Alcohol Has Nothing to Do With Willpower There are not two types of people - those who can drink and those who can't. Anyone can start to use alcohol problematically if they are drinking regularly and begin associating it with relief from emotional or physical pain. These kinds of sayings shame people and put the blame squarely on the individual - rather than understanding the truth: Alcohol is the solution to the problem of a person's pain. Not the problem itself. This means: Problematic alcohol use is not a morality issue It is often a valid nervous system safety response to a world that doesn't have our best interests at heart The goal is not to shame ourselves into stopping - it is to find a different solution Our job is to learn how to hold ourselves in our distress. To find a way to be with this world that doesn't hurt our heart and soul even more in the process. If you are sober curious, tired of the back-and-forth about drinking, or simply want a take it or leave it relationship with alcohol - you are in the right place. #123 Rise AF

In this episode, I guide you through my “Rise” framework for changing your relationship with alcohol. We explore why your drinking is never about “willpower” or “moral failure” and is almost always about unmet needs, nervous system overwhelm, and outdated beliefs you’ve carried for years. I share how grounding, visualisation, and gentle self‑inquiry can help your brain feel safer with change, so you’re not constantly “white‑knuckling it” around booze. I walk you through core concepts I use in my programs - like curiosity over judgment, understanding dopamine and why we chase it, building a compelling vision for an alcohol‑light life, and using awareness tools instead of shame. We also talk about the power of immersion (podcasts, books, social media), why community is so vital, and how to start making a practical plan that fits your real life - not some perfect, imaginary version of you. Throughout, I share stories from clients who’ve gone from anxious, exhausted and stuck to feeling grounded, self‑trusting and genuinely indifferent to alcohol - more like a “cheese sandwich” than a magical elixir. If you’re a midlife woman (especially neurodivergent like me) who’s drinking more than you want to and is tired of feeling like the problem, this conversation offers a kinder, more compassionate way forward. Key Takeaways I always start with grounding (breath, body awareness, connection to the earth) because getting out of your head and into your body makes change feel safer to your nervous system. You are not your thoughts; you are the thinker of your thoughts - this gives you space to question old stories about alcohol, yourself and the world. Many women drink more than they want to because nobody says “thank you,” “well done,” or “good job” - booze becomes a shortcut to relief and recognition. My work is about taking a break from taking a break - stepping out of judgment and resistance and into curiosity and inquiry rather than focusing only on stopping. We examine three levels of belief:Beliefs about the substance (alcohol itself)Beliefs about society (what’s “normal,” social expectations)Beliefs about self (worthiness, competence, identity) Dopamine isn’t a moral issue; it’s biology. We’re wired to seek it, and alcohol gives us an unearned, easy hit, which can distort how good we think it is. Craving is usually your body saying “I’m not okay”, not that you’re weak - often it’s about tiredness, loneliness, overwhelm, social anxiety, or people‑pleasing. Alcohol is almost always a solution to a problem, not the problem itself. Until we understand the underlying need, change won’t stick. Awareness worksheets and mindful tracking turn “slip‑ups” into data points, so we can ask: What happened? What was I feeling? What did I really need? Self‑compassion is non‑negotiable: I ask, “What would I say to me if I were someone I loved?”-especially when things don’t go to plan. Visualisation tools like the North Star exercise help your brain feel safer, because it gets a clear picture of what an alcohol‑light day could actually look and feel like. Our culture gives alcohol a huge amount of power; I want you to feel about booze the way you do about a cheese sandwich - neutral, take‑it‑or‑leave‑it. We’re taught that being alcohol‑free is boring and miserable; in reality, for many women it’s a massive upgrade in energy, joy, and self‑respect. Immersion works: podcasts, “quit‑lit,” and social media accounts that reflect your values can rewire your beliefs and show you what’s possible. Don’t go to Bunnings for milk - talk about your alcohol journey with people who get it and won’t minimise, shame, or sabotage you. There is no “failure” in my methodology - only learning. The only “fail” is disappearing and not coming back to look at what happened. “Maybe” about drinking is almost always a yes. Setting a clear intention for the day around alcohol is far more powerful than vague hopes. Change involves choosing your hard: the discomfort of staying stuck versus the discomfort of growth and honest self‑reflection. You were never broken; this work is not about fixing you, it’s about understanding your conditioning so you can choose differently. Support and community are essential. We’re not meant to do this alone, and shame thrives in isolation but dissolves in safe, validating spaces. 👉The 3-Day End of Jan Alcohol Reset - Reconnect · Rewire · RiseFREE - My Back to School Gift To You27th-29th January 2026Live on zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82540254435 or in Midlife AF Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1AmoBDBtzB/  or at 6 PM Melbourne - AEDT To join live register here https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset  Once registered you can access the replays, resources and work books in the RESET Hub link is here https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/jan-3-day-reset-hub 👉The Link For the 30 Day Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Starting Monday Feb 2nd 2026 is:  https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment Special RESET Discount Codes for the Feb 2nd edition of the 30 Day Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Live - Gives you $200 off the Upfront Price or $50 off each payment from the 4 * monthly Payment Plan instalments. #122 Rewired AF

In this episode, I walk you through my “third way” approach: a compassionate path that sits between white‑knuckling sobriety and feeling stuck in a shame spiral with alcohol. We explore how to get out of resistance and into curiosity, begin reconnecting with our bodies, and gently question the stories we’ve carried for decades. If you’ve ever thought, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just stop at one?” this conversation is for you. You’ll also hear how I work with women in my Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment, why grounding and self‑compassion matter so much, and how shifting beliefs can make alcohol feel more like a cheese sandwich - something you can truly take or leave. Episode Highlights: I encourage you to celebrate yourself simply for being here and examining your relationship with alcohol - most people never do this work. One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is: “Why do I like to drink?” answered without judgment. Everything we believe about booze, and much of what we believe about ourselves, is shaped by conditioning, not truth. There are three levels of belief:- Beliefs about the substance (what alcohol “does” for us)- Beliefs about society (what’s normal, social, fun)- Beliefs about self (am I lovable, acceptable, fun without alcohol?) Beliefs about the substance are often the easiest to shift once we understand how alcohol actually affects our brain and body. Alcohol doesn’t truly relax us - it spikes dopamine briefly, then floods us with stress chemicals like cortisol, adrenaline, and dynorphin. Our struggle with alcohol is not a moral failing or lack of willpower; it’s about biology, nervous system regulation, and learned coping. Many of our traits and patterns are actually protective adaptations, not our “true personality.” We didn’t make ourselves - family dynamics, culture, and marketing (like “drink responsibly”) all shape our shame and silence. Shame keeps us alone, and when we’re lonely, we’re more likely to drink. Breaking the shame is part of healing. Dopamine’s job is to make us seek; it shows us alcohol through “rose‑tinted glasses,” which keeps us chasing the “buzz.” Starting with knowledge and awareness - then feelings - then behaviour is far more effective than trying to change behaviour with willpower alone. My “third way” is about building a take‑it‑or‑leave‑it relationship with alcohol, grounded in self‑compassion, nervous system tools, and deeper understanding - not harsh rules. 👉The 3-Day End of Jan Alcohol Reset - Reconnect · Rewire · RiseFREE - My Back to School Gift To You27th-29th January 2026Live on zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82540254435 or in Midlife AF Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1AmoBDBtzB/  or at 6 PM Melbourne - AEDT To join live register here https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/3-day-reset Once registered you can access the replays, resources and work books in the RESET Hub link is here https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/jan-3-day-reset-hub 👉The Link For the 30 Day Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Starting Monday Feb 2nd 2026 is:  https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment Special RESET Discount Codes for the Feb 2nd edition of the 30 Day Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Live - Gives you $200 off the Upfront Price or $50 off each payment from the 4 * monthly Payment Plan instalments. #121 Reconnected AF

In this episode, I invite you into Day 1 of my three-day end-of-January Alcohol Reset, where I share the “third way” of being around alcohol—beyond the old binary of either “miserably sober” or “happily drinking with constant regret.” Speaking from both my professional training and my lived experience, I talk about how I went from a chaotic, booze-fuelled life to a genuinely take-it-or-leave-it relationship with alcohol, where it now has no emotional pull and feels about as interesting as a cheese sandwich. I walk you through why this unique time of year—especially here in Australia, with kids going back to school and summer socialising still in full swing—is actually a powerful moment to pause and reflect before the rest of the year sweeps you away. Rather than pushing you to “just stop drinking,” I introduce the concept of the Pause: taking a break from taking a break, staying curious, and using your current drinking as valuable data instead of a reason to beat yourself up. We explore how self-trust, self-awareness, and self-compassion sit at the heart of sustainable change. I share stories from my own life—from wild nights in London media culture to exhausted contract work, neurodivergent parenting, and those 3am shame spirals—to show you that the real issue isn’t alcohol itself, but why we’re using it. You’ll hear how I now live happily alcohol-free by choice, while still holding space for a million different ways to be around alcohol for others. If you’ve ever felt like alcohol is your reward, your way to decompress, your “me time,” or simply something that has more control over you than you’d like—this episode will help you feel less alone, more understood, and much better equipped to start changing your relationship with alcohol in a kind, non-judgmental way. Key Takeaways (from Emma) I don’t teach “quit or fail”; I teach a third way of being with alcohol that’s based on curiosity, not willpower or white-knuckling. A take-it-or-leave-it relationship with alcohol is possible—where booze has no pull, no drama, and becomes a genuine non-issue. The real problem usually isn’t alcohol itself; it’s the underlying needs we’re trying to meet—stress relief, social ease, escape, rest, sensory regulation, or “me time.” The Pause means taking a break from taking a break: you can keep drinking while you learn, observe, and gather data about your patterns instead of attacking yourself. Beating ourselves up (“I’m weak, I have no willpower”) doesn’t create change; it just dysregulates our nervous system and makes us more likely to drink again. Everything shifts on the other side of awareness: noticing when you first think about alcohol, your rituals, how it tastes and feels, and the true after-effects. My awareness worksheets help you track your thoughts, feelings, routines, and the aftermath of drinking with a non-judgmental, “Martian researcher” mindset. Self-compassion is the antidote to shame and the heart of sustainable change:- Self-kindness instead of self-attack- Common humanity (“I’m not the only one who struggles like this”)- Mindfulness instead of catastrophising and over-identifying with every feeling Many of us drink because being inside our own heads feels like an abusive relationship; the work is to become a soft place to land for ourselves. You do not have to stop drinking to start this work. If you’ve already stopped, great—stay stopped. If you haven’t, you’re still in exactly the right place. My Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment builds on these ideas in a small, trauma-informed, neuro-affirming group, helping you move from “stuck in the cycle” to genuine freedom and choice around alcohol. #120 Refreshed AF

In this final session of my three-day Festive Alcohol Reset, I walk you through exactly how to move into a “third way” relationship with alcohol - one that isn’t miserable, all‑or‑nothing, or based on shame and willpower. I share how we can step into the New Year feeling refreshed, resourced, and connected to our original, unhurt selves, instead of chasing a “new me” from a place of self‑blame. I talk about why slip‑ups are data, not moral failures, how dopamine and our beliefs keep us stuck, and why self‑compassion is non‑negotiable if we want lasting change. We explore painting a vivid vision of a life where booze is a genuine non‑issue, and I walk you through the core pillars I teach in my programs: knowledge, positive emotion, and aligned action - all wrapped in community, curiosity, and kindness. If your intuition is whispering (or yelling) that alcohol is taking more than it’s giving, this episode will help you see that you are not broken, you are not alone, and there really is a way to make this feel lighter, easier, and even joyful. Episode Highlights I explain my “third way” approach to alcohol - neither white‑knuckled sobriety nor stuck, unhappy drinking. I share why I rarely use the word “sober” and why language matters so much in how we see ourselves and our choices. I reframe slip‑ups as data points, not proof of failure or lack of character. I walk through the three levels of belief that keep us stuck: Beliefs about the substance (“Alcohol relaxes me”) Beliefs about society (“You can’t have fun without booze”) Beliefs about the self (“There’s something wrong with me”). I talk about dopamine - why the first drink feels so good, how alcohol hijacks our reward system, and what that means for cravings. I emphasise that problematic drinking is a normal human response to an addictive substance, not a personal defect. I show how real change comes from knowledge → positive emotion → action, not from goals and willpower alone. I guide you to define how you want to feel in your future relationship with alcohol (e.g. free, relieved, fearless), rather than just how much you want to drink. I invite you to paint a detailed day‑in‑the‑life where alcohol is a non‑issue and you wake up clear, present, and proud. I talk about returning to the “OG” you - the original, unmasked, unprotected self beneath the coping strategies. I explain why blame (of self or others) keeps us out of change and steals our power. I encourage using curiosity over criticism whenever a craving or slip shows up: “What need is unmet here?” I highlight how planning and preparation make social and high‑risk situations far easier to navigate. I share why community and group coaching are so powerful for dissolving shame and showing us we are not alone. I invite listeners into my Aussie Alcohol Experiment, explaining how it helps you cultivate a genuine take‑it‑or‑leave‑it relationship with alcohol, on your own terms. 👉 Join the 3-Day Festive Alcohol Reset (Dec 27–29)Repair · Reconnect · Refresh (Free)https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/3-day-reset 👉 Join the January 2026 Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Starts January 1https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment

    #118 Repaired AF

In this special episode of Midlife AF, I guide you through the first part of my three-day Festive alcohol reset designed especially for the wild, wobbly space between Christmas and New Year. I share how I went from looking “fine” on the outside - successful career, running half marathons, oysters and champagne - to feeling utterly broken inside, waking at 3am gripped by shame, anxiety, and promises to myself I couldn’t keep. I introduce a different, deeply compassionate way to change your relationship with alcohol - one that doesn’t rely on willpower, punishment, or labels, and doesn’t even require you to stop drinking to begin. We explore grounding, awareness, and self‑trust, and I explain why you drink for very valid reasons, how dopamine hijacks your brain, and why self‑compassion (not self‑criticism) is the heart of sustainable change. You’ll also hear about my work with women in midlife, my own journey through burnout, bullying at work, neurodivergence, and parenting quirky teens, and how becoming alcohol free has allowed me to become the calm space in my family’s chaos. This is an invitation to pause, get curious, and start gently repairing your relationship with alcohol - and with yourself. Episode Highlights I created this three‑day Festive Reset as a gentle space between Christmas and New Year to repair, reconnect, and refresh your relationship with alcohol. You absolutely do not need to stop drinking to start this work; you can change your relationship with alcohol while still drinking. My approach goes deeper than “top 10 tips” and willpower - it’s built on neuroscience, psychology, and compassionate inquiry. I share my own story: from high‑functioning, overachieving, “healthy” drinker to burned‑out, anxious, and waking at 3am full of shame. On the outside I looked like I had it all together; on the inside I felt like a terrible mum, partner, and person constantly failing herself. Alcohol was my off‑switch from a life crammed with caregiving, a demanding corporate job, neurodivergent kids, and zero bandwidth. Discovering my own and my children’s neurodivergence reframed so much of my past drinking as a coping strategy, not a moral failing. Today I’m happily alcohol free, and far more able to be the “calm space” in my world - even when life is still messy and hard. We start this episode with grounding and breathwork to show how regulating your nervous system can give you what you’re seeking from that first drink. A key goal is rebuilding self‑trust after years of making and breaking promises to yourself about when and how much you’ll drink. Awareness work (like my awareness worksheets) helps you see your triggers, patterns, routines, and the real reasons you drink. Everything you do with alcohol, you do for a reason - usually to escape suffering (loneliness, stress, overwhelm, boredom, pain). Self‑compassion is the core of this methodology: we swap judgment for curiosity and punishment for kindness. I lean on Kristin Neff’s three components of self‑compassion: self‑kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness (you have experiences; you’re not your experiences). Shame and willpower‑based approaches often keep people “white‑knuckling” sobriety for years without real freedom. Dopamine is a survival chemical: your brain thinks alcohol is vital because it delivers a fast, powerful dopamine hit when you’re dysregulated. When you “slip,” instead of spiraling into blame, you can ask, “What was going on for me? How was I feeling? What did I need?” Community - especially among women who “get it”—is incredibly healing; you realize you’re not uniquely broken, you’re completely human. The ultimate aim is a take it or leave it relationship with alcohol and a much more loving, trusting relationship with yourself. 👉 Join the 3-Day Festive Alcohol Reset (Dec 27–29)Repair · Reconnect · Refresh (Free)https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/3-day-reset 👉 Join the January 2026 Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Starts January 1https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment

She asks in a way that feels gentle and safe. Over the month I was able to remove the layers, look inward, and reframe my future choices using the tools Emma helped me develop. The sense of community and not feeling alone or broken was a huge bonus.”Clare“Having taken part in other alcohol programs, Emma’s was a breath of fresh air. She brings a wealth of knowledge and looks at you as a whole person, not just your drinking. She helps you understand where your triggers come from and supports you to work with them in a safe and compassionate environment.”Toni“Emma is like a ray of sunshine. This experiment meets you wherever you are. She taught me that it’s okay to be unapologetically imperfect and reminded me of the importance of self-love. I finished the experiment with the skills and confidence to trust myself again.”P.S.You don’t need to label yourself. You don’t need to decide anything forever. If alcohol has been taking up more space than you’d like, this is a very kind place to start.

    #119 Reconnected AF

In this session, I guide you through grounding practices, explore why so much of what we believe about alcohol (and ourselves) simply isn’t true, and share how shifting your beliefs can change your relationship with drinking without willpower, shame, or self‑punishment. I talk about the myths around alcohol “relaxing” us, why we reach for the buzz when life feels overwhelming, and how dopamine and dinorphin actually keep us stuck in a cycle of stress, anxiety, and disappointment. We also look at how cultural conditioning, patriarchy, trauma, and people‑pleasing shape our drinking, and why self‑soothing with alcohol is an intelligent adaptation, not a moral failing. This is an invitation to step out of fear and scarcity and into choice, abundance, and deep self‑compassion as you move toward a take‑it‑or‑leave‑it relationship with alcohol. Episode Highlights This series is a reset, not a reprimand - it’s designed for the wobbly space between Christmas and New Year to help you repair, reconnect, and refresh before stepping into 2026. Grounding is essential, not optional - simple practices like feeling your feet, placing a hand on your chest and tummy, and breathing slowly can regulate your nervous system and bring you back into your body. Beliefs run the show - most of our drinking is driven by unconscious beliefs at three levels: Substance: “Alcohol relaxes me,” “It’s a treat,” “It helps me switch off.”Society: “You can’t celebrate or socialise without booze,” “A proper meal needs wine.” Self: “There’s something wrong with me,” “I’m weak,” “I should have more willpower.” Much of what we believe about alcohol is the opposite of the truth - science shows alcohol floods us with dopamine once, then leaves us with cortisol, adrenaline, and dinorphin, increasing anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, and the urge to drink again. The ‘buzz’ isn’t what you think - it’s not calm or happiness; it’s a dopamine‑fuelled seeking state that makes us chase more, even when the drink doesn’t actually taste or feel that good. You didn’t “make” yourself - your patterns are intelligent adaptations to your upbringing, culture, trauma (big T and small t), and the roles society expects midlife women to play. Compulsive drinking is self‑soothing, not lack of character - as the holistic psychologist says, soothing is instinctual, not moral. You drink because it works… until it doesn’t. Alcohol keeps us small and compliant - it helps us tolerate the intolerable: over‑functioning, people‑pleasing, exhaustion, loneliness, and suppressing our true needs and desires. Real rebellion is going against the drinking norm - in a culture that normalises a toxic substance, choosing to question alcohol and listen to your intuition is deeply counter‑cultural. Dopamine needs to be scaled to effort - quick, high dopamine hits (like alcohol) come with a cost; joy and contentment grow from effortful, value‑aligned actions and genuine connection. Shame and drill‑sergeant tactics don’t create sustainable change - research shows long‑term change comes from kindness, curiosity, and self‑compassion, not punishment and fear. The path to change is threefold: knowledge → emotion → action  Learn how alcohol truly affects your brain, body, and nervous system. Imagine how you want to feel (freedom, peace, self‑trust, ease) and let that pull you forward. Then experiment with behaviour (pauses, breaks, new rituals) from a place of choice, not deprivation. A take‑it‑or‑leave‑it relationship with alcohol is possible - when your beliefs shift and the desire softens, you’re no longer fighting yourself; you’re simply choosing what genuinely serves you.  👉 Join the 3-Day Festive Alcohol Reset (Dec 27–29)Repair · Reconnect · Refresh (Free)https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/3-day-reset 👉 Join the January 2026 Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment - Starts January 1https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment

    #116 Bored AF

Let’s get real about boredom, especially when you’re taking a break from alcohol. In this week’s episode, I’m unpacking why “I’m bored” can feel shamey, why stillness can spike dread for trauma survivors and neurodivergent brains, and how comparison pours petrol on the fire. We talk Peter Levine, Internal Family Systems, Kristin Neff, Tara Brach, and Brene Brown, but keep it super practical for real life. If “busy” has been your personality, this one’s a deep exhale and a warm reminder that you’re not broken; you’re human. What we cover: The sneaky origins of boredom shame from childhood and why it sticks. Boredom ≠ lack of stimulation for trauma survivors and ND folks, it’s the threat of being with ourselves. The “second arrow” of self-judgment and how it multiplies pain. Why our nervous system sometimes tries to discharge stored stress in the quiet. How neurodivergent masking leads to crash cycles, comparison, and coping. Practical reframes: becoming the observer, stopping the second arrow, and meeting real needs. Radical acceptance and the beauty of a “nice little life.” Small, doable ways to build capacity for stillness without reaching for a drink. Listen if: You’re alcohol-free or AF-curious, you identify as “always busy,” or you’re tired of comparing your Tuesday to someone else’s highlight reel. #115 Moderation or AF

In this episode, I dive deep into the question I hear most often: “Can I just drink like a normal person?” I share my own journey with alcohol, the challenges of moderation, and why so many of us are drawn to the idea of having “just two glasses of wine.” We’ll explore the powerful influence of the alcohol industry, the real risks of drinking, and why the desire to moderate is often rooted in deeper emotional needs. I’ll also discuss my unique, non-fear-based approach to changing your relationship with alcohol, and why true transformation is about unmasking and self-acceptance-not just willpower. If you’ve ever wondered why moderation feels so hard, or if you’re ready to look beneath the surface of your drinking habits, this episode is for you.Episode Takeaways: Most people who work with me want to “drink like normal people”, but moderation is much harder than it seems. The alcohol industry and societal norms have convinced us that being able to drink moderately is a sign of being acceptable and in control. There is no truly safe amount of alcohol; even small amounts increase health risks, especially for women. The desire to moderate is often about wanting to fit in, avoid rejection, and mask deeper emotional pain. My approach is not fear-based; it’s about understanding your relationship with alcohol and making choices that feel right for you in the moment. Moderation requires constant vigilance and self-control, which can be exhausting and unsustainable for many. True change comes from addressing the root causes of why we drink—not just the behavior itself. Self-acceptance and unmasking are at the heart of my coaching; it’s about learning to love yourself as you are, not fixing yourself to fit an ideal. If you’re feeling stuck, know that it’s a hopeful sign of change, awareness is the first step. #114 Alchemised AF

In this episode, I share my personal journey as a late-diagnosed autistic ADHD counselor, psychotherapist, and alcohol coach. I open up about my struggles with busy brain, masking, and the coping mechanisms I used - including alcohol - to manage overwhelming thoughts and emotions. I discuss how societal expectations, trauma, and neurodivergence shaped my identity, and how self-compassion became the key to transforming my relationship with myself and with alcohol. Episode Takeaways: I learned that “busy brain” is not a personality flaw, but a symptom of deeper issues like trauma, neurodivergence, and societal pressure. Alcohol and other coping mechanisms are often solutions to discomfort, not the root problem themselves. Self-compassion, not willpower or harsh self-judgment, is the most effective path to healing and change. Masking and trying to fit in led me to lose touch with my authentic self; unmasking is a gradual, ongoing process. Our inner critic and need to control are often protective strategies developed in response to feeling unsafe or unacceptable. Burnout, stress, and self-sabotage are common among neurodivergent and sensitive people, especially when we ignore our needs. Sharing our stories and struggles helps break the cycle of shame and isolation. True transformation - alchemy - comes from understanding and repurposing our coping strategies, not just suppressing them. #113 Not That Bad But Bad Enough

In this episode, I share my personal journey with alcohol: how I navigated the confusing space between “not that bad” and “bad enough.” I open up about the subtle red flags that accumulated over time, the impact my drinking had on my family, and the pivotal moments that led me to question my relationship with alcohol. I talk about the challenges of letting go of an identity built around drinking, the power of self-compassion, and the freedom I discovered on the other side. This conversation is for anyone quietly wondering if something needs to shift, and I hope my story offers both comfort and inspiration.Key Takeaways: I never hit a dramatic “rock bottom,” but a series of small red flags made me realize my drinking was “bad enough” for me. My children’s reactions to my drinking were wake-up calls that I couldn’t ignore, even if I tried to minimise them at first. Leaving a high-pressure job and facing my own mental health struggles made me more aware of how I used alcohol to cope. I learned that self-compassion is essential for lasting change, beating myself up never worked. Education was empowering: understanding how alcohol affects the brain and body helped me shift my mindset. Letting go of my “fun wine-lover” identity was hard, but it ultimately brought me relief and a sense of freedom. Taking a year off alcohol gave me the space to rebuild trust in myself and discover who I am beyond drinking. My story isn’t about labels or shame, it’s about listening to your own signals and making changes that feel right for you. This conversation is about breaking silence, normalising challenging experiences, and creating supportive spaces for neurodivergent families. #112 Isolated AF

In this intimate episode, I sit down with Tanya Valentin, a parenting coach specialising in supporting parents of neurodivergent children through burnout. We dive deep into the unspoken challenges of parenting neurodivergent kids, the impact of masking, and the emotional journey of finding safety and authenticity.Key Takeaways: Parenting neurodivergent children can be an incredibly isolating experience, often shrouded in shame and judgment Burnout is a complex, non-linear process that requires compassion and understanding Neurodivergent parents often struggle with people-pleasing, masking, and suppressing their own needs Building emotional safety is a gradual process of micro-moments and learning to trust oneself Advocating for our children requires first creating nervous system safety for ourselves Society often shames parents and children for expressing difficult emotions, which can lead to long-term psychological impacts The journey of healing involves recognizing survival mechanisms and learning to support ourselves differently There's a strong correlation between suppressed emotions, masking, and coping mechanisms like alcohol use This conversation is about breaking silence, normalizing challenging experiences, and creating supportive spaces for neurodivergent families. #111 Decided AF

This week I dive deep into the concept of "flow over force" when it comes to changing habits, particularly around alcohol use. I share my approach that moves away from shame-based, punitive methods and instead focuses on understanding our triggers, building self-compassion, and creating safety within ourselves. Drawing from my experience as a neurodivergent mum, I explore how traditional recovery models often fail and introduce my "third way" method of approaching behavioural change.Key Takeaways: Punitive and shame-based approaches to habit change don't work, especially for neurodivergent individuals and those with trauma Alcohol is often a coping mechanism that helps people feel safe or escape difficult emotions Neurodivergent parents, particularly mothers, face unique challenges that can lead to using alcohol as a way to find space and relief True change comes from understanding your triggers and learning to be compassionate with yourself The goal is not to "fight" against a behaviour, but to understand why you're using it and create alternative ways to meet those needs Interceptive awareness and learning to recognise and sit with emotions is crucial for sustainable change My 30-day Aussie Alcohol Experiment offers a supportive, non-judgmental approach to exploring your relationship with alcohol Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs: Join The GREAT Aussie Alcohol Experiment - LIVE June 2025 here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment Join Emma's VIP ELITE experience here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/offers/k7AXMNPG  Join Emma's Be The Lighthouse membership here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/bethelighthouse  Get Emma's Visualisation audio download at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/northstarvisualisation  Emma's Awareness worksheets for people wanting to prepare prior to taking a break from drinking or reduce their drinking by being more mindful about what and why they drink https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/awareness-worksheets-opt-in  Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset for people looking to take a quick reset https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset  Join The Self-Paced Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/aae  Loved this episode? #110 Fierce AF

In this episode, I discuss the importance of fierce self-compassion and being fiercely alcohol-free, especially in the current challenging times we're facing. I share my thoughts on how self-compassion is a key pillar for living an alcohol-free life and not wanting to escape from our experiences. I also talk about the societal stigma around alcohol use and how it prevents many people from addressing their relationship with it. Key Takeaways: Self-compassion is essential for creating sustainable change and lasting sobriety, as it allows us to approach our struggles with kindness rather than harsh self-judgment. The societal stigma around alcohol use prevents many people from seeking help or even acknowledging their relationship with it, perpetuating the problem. We often use alcohol to suppress, escape, and numb our difficult emotions and experiences, rather than learning to sit with and process them. Developing self-compassion has two key aspects: the nurturing, comforting "yin" side and the fierce, boundary-setting "yang" side. Being fiercely alcohol-free means not only caring for ourselves with compassion but also being willing to stand up and take action against the forces that perpetuate harmful drinking behaviors. In these challenging times, we need clear-headed, compassionate individuals who are willing to fight for what's right and create the change we need to see in the world. #109 Unbroken AF

In this episode, I discuss the important concept of not being "broken" and the harmful societal narratives that tell us we need to fix or control ourselves, especially when it comes to our relationship with alcohol. I share my personal journey of overcoming these beliefs and how my programs are designed to help people build emotional safety, self-compassion, and an authentic connection with themselves - rather than focusing solely on abstinence. Key Takeaways: Society has conditioned us to believe that if we have an issue with alcohol, it is our personal fault and we are "broken" - this narrative is harmful and untrue Alcohol is chemically designed to make us want more, exploiting our natural reward systems, yet the alcohol industry shifts the blame to the individual Many of our insecurities and feelings of unworthiness stem from childhood conditioning and the concept of "original sin" - the belief that there is something inherently wrong with human beings True healing and change comes from building emotional safety, self-compassion, and an authentic connection with ourselves - not from a focus on abstinence or "fixing" ourselves My programs are about so much more than just alcohol; they guide people to unpack their core wounds, triggers, and unhealthy coping mechanisms to rediscover their essential, worthy selves Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs: 'From Crappy to Happy’ Join The Great Aussie Alcohol - LIVE 30-Day Experiment for a HAPPIER, HEALTHIER YOU - without sacrificing, struggling, or feeling like you're missing out.3rd March-1st April: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment

    #108 Present & Regulated AF

In this episode, I discuss the powerful insights I gained from a recent talk by author Liz Gilbert. I explore Liz's message about the importance of being the "calmest person in the room" and how this can be a source of true power, especially for women navigating the challenges of midlife. I delve into the pressure many of us feel to be constantly reactive, and how learning to pause, ground ourselves, and respond from a place of presence can transform our experiences - both personal and professional. This episode is a reminder that sometimes the most impactful change comes not from frantic action, but from the wisdom of self-regulation and inner calm.Key Takeaways: Liz Gilbert's insight that the "calmest person in the room" often holds the most power, and how this relates to women's experiences The importance of learning to pause, ground ourselves, and respond from a place of presence rather than reactivity The role of self-care practices like exercise, time in nature, and nervous system regulation techniques in cultivating inner calm Recognizing when our fight-or-flight responses are not serving us, and developing the skills to navigate challenging situations with more equanimity The ways that alcohol can contribute to a lack of emotional regulation, and how sobriety can create more space for presence Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs: 'Feel healthier, sleep better, get more done!’ Discover the secret to a ‘take it or leave it’ relationship with alcohol with my 5 Days To Freedom - Virtual Retreat - 17 February - 21 February @ 7:00pm-8:00pm nightly (live & recorded): https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/5day-vr 'From Crappy to Happy’ Join The Great Aussie Alcohol - LIVE 30-Day Experiment for a HAPPIER, HEALTHIER YOU - without sacrificing, struggling, or feeling like you're missing out.3rd March-1st April: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/the_great_aussie_alcohol_experiment Join Emma's VIP ELITE experience here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/offers/k7AXMNPG  Join Emma's Be The Lighthouse membership here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/bethelighthouse  Get Emma's Visualisation audio download at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/northstarvisualisation  Emma's Awareness worksheets for people wanting to prepare prior to taking a break from drinking or reduce their drinking by being more mindful about what and why they drink https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/awareness-worksheets-opt-in  Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset for people looking to take a quick reset https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset  Join The Self-Paced Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/aae  Loved this episode? #107 Lovingly Attached AF

In this episode, I sit down to have a conversation about the importance of developing a loving, compassionate relationship with ourselves. As someone who has navigated her own challenges with alcohol, I share how cultivating self-kindness was pivotal to creating lasting change. We explore how our childhood attachment styles can shape our adult lives and the practical steps we can take to become the nurturing parent we always needed. Through delving into the neuroscience behind self-compassion and the different attachment patterns, I offer insights and tools that can support personal growth, whether you're looking to shift your relationship with alcohol or simply want to deepen your self-acceptance. This conversation dives beneath the surface-level strategies to uncover the deeper emotional and psychological factors that often underlie our struggles, providing a roadmap for true transformation. Key Takeaways: The root cause of many people's difficulties changing their relationship with alcohol is the harsh, self-critical inner voice - we must learn to treat ourselves with kindness first. Our attachment styles (secure, anxious, avoidant, disorganized) formed in childhood profoundly impact our adult relationships and self-perception, but these patterns are not fixed. Practices like loving-kindness meditation can help us become the nurturing parent we never had, healing the wounded parts of ourselves. Developing awareness around our triggers, motivations, and emotional patterns around alcohol is the crucial first step before making behavioral changes. Embracing all aspects of ourselves, including the parts we've rejected or made "bad," is key to lasting personal transformation. We can shift our attachment styles through inner work, learning to be the compassionate caregiver we always needed. #106 Emotional DJ AF

In this episode, I sit down to have an open and honest conversation about the powerful role that emotions play in our lives, especially when it comes to our relationship with alcohol and other coping mechanisms. I share my own personal experiences with getting triggered, experiencing "backdraft" when opening up to my emotions, and the societal pressures that can make it so difficult to be authentic. I dive into the importance of self-compassion, building emotional safety, and learning to sit with and process our feelings, rather than trying to numb or escape them. This is a vulnerable discussion about the deeper work required to truly heal our relationship with alcohol and live more fulfilling, connected lives.Key Takeaways: Emotions arise 7 seconds before our thinking brain kicks in, often based on subconscious interpretations from our past experiences and childhood. Many of us have learned to suppress or numb our emotions, leading to a "backdraft" effect when we finally open up and allow ourselves to feel. Society often conditions us to behave in certain "acceptable" ways, making it risky and uncomfortable to be our authentic selves. Unprocessed emotions and unmet needs from childhood can be a major driver behind unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol use. Building emotional safety, self-compassion, and the ability to sit with and work through difficult feelings is crucial for healing. Reconnecting to our true selves, rather than trying to fit an idealised societal mold, is a lifelong journey of courage and self-discovery. #105 Accepting AF

In this episode, I share my journey of learning to let go of resistance and embrace self-compassion on the path to becoming alcohol-free. I discuss how our inability to feel and process pain is often at the root of unhealthy coping mechanisms like drinking, and share the importance of developing mindfulness to observe our thoughts and feelings, rather than getting caught up in them. I also emphasise the transformative power of offering ourselves kindness and understanding, just as we would a dear friend struggling. Through practices like the ice cube exercise, I demonstrate how we can learn to move through discomfort with greater ease and clarity. My hope is that this conversation inspires you to approach your own challenges with more self-acceptance and inner wisdom. Key Takeaways: Resistance, or wishing things were different than they are, is a major source of suffering and a barrier to change. Our aversion to feeling pain, often rooted in childhood experiences, drives us to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol use. Developing mindfulness to observe our thoughts and sensations, rather than getting caught up in them, is a crucial first step. Offering ourselves self-compassion - validating our struggles and providing the care and understanding we needed as children - can profoundly transform our relationship with difficulty. Practices like the ice cube exercise demonstrate how we can learn to be with discomfort, rather than reflexively resisting it, allowing us to move through challenges with more ease. Making sustainable changes requires addressing the underlying beliefs and emotional patterns, not just relying on willpower. #104 Aware & Safe AF

In this episode, I share my thoughts on the importance of emotional safety and awareness when it comes to reducing or stopping alcohol consumption. I chat about how awareness allows us to see the reasons behind our drinking, rather than just relying on willpower. I also ponder on the role of self-compassion in this process, and how being kind to ourselves is crucial for making lasting change. This conversation is a deep dive into the psychological and emotional aspects of changing our relationship with alcohol. Key Takeaways: Awareness is key - understanding the reasons and emotions behind our drinking habits is more important than just trying to stop through willpower alone. Self-compassion is vital - being kind and understanding towards ourselves, rather than harshly judging, is essential for sustainable change. Emotional safety is crucial - creating boundaries and surrounding ourselves with supportive people helps us feel secure enough to address the deeper issues. Our drinking is often a symptom, not the root problem - it's about learning to manage difficult emotions and experiences in healthier ways. Reparenting ourselves with love and care can help heal the parts of us that have been suppressed or judged in the past. Awareness allows us to pause before reacting, giving us the space to choose a more constructive response. #103 Decided AF

In this episode, I share my personal journey with alcohol and the freedom I found in making the decision to stop drinking for a year. I talk about the neuroscience behind alcohol addiction and how it acts as a survival mechanism in the brain. I discuss the importance of making a clear decision, rather than trying to moderate, and how that decision-making process can be freeing. I also touch on the role of willpower, the problems with the "drink responsibly" messaging, and the value of doing inner work to change beliefs around alcohol. Key Takeaways: Alcohol triggers a dopamine rush that the brain interprets as a survival need, making it very difficult to moderate Making a clear decision, whether for a month, a year, or indefinitely, can be incredibly freeing compared to constantly debating whether to drink Willpower alone is not an effective long-term strategy for changing alcohol use habits The "drink responsibly" messaging promoted by the alcohol industry is problematic and places the blame on the individual Doing inner work to challenge beliefs and assumptions about alcohol can be a powerful part of the change process Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs Wishing you could stop at that elusive 2nd glass of wine instead of finishing the bottle? #102 Sourced AF

In this episode, I discuss the profound concept of "returning to source" - the idea that at our core, we are inherently good and have the capacity to nurture and heal ourselves. I delve into the societal conditioning that often leads us to believe we are broken or unworthy, and how this mindset can fuel our reliance on external crutches like alcohol. I share the importance of cultivating self-love, presence, and the understanding that we already possess everything we need within ourselves. Throughout the episode, I encourage you to embrace the journey of self-discovery and to recognise your inherent goodness and capacity for healing. Key Takeaways: The concept of "returning to source" is about unmasking and reconnecting with the human being we were meant to be, before societal conditioning told us we were not good enough. At our core, we are inherently good and have the capacity to nurture and heal ourselves, rather than relying on external crutches like alcohol. Societal expectations and the pressure to conform can lead to the development of coping mechanisms and limiting beliefs that no longer serve us, especially in midlife. The journey of self-discovery and learning to hold ourselves with unconditional positive regard is both terrifying and incredibly exciting. Upcoming programs like the Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment and a masterclass on the benefits of taking a break from alcohol can provide valuable support and guidance on this transformative path. Embracing our authentic selves and recognising our inherent goodness is the key to lasting change and fulfilment. #101 Served AF

In this episode of Midlife AF, I dive deep into the topic of servitude - the conditioning many of us, especially women, experience to put the needs of others before our own. I share how this belief system can lead to burnout, resentment, and the need to numb out with alcohol. I challenge the notion that we must always be selfless, and emphasize the importance of putting our own needs first in order to live a fulfilling, alcohol-free life. Through personal stories and insights from my coaching work, I explore how breaking free from the cycle of servitude is key to our liberation and healing.Key Takeaways: The belief that we must always put others before ourselves is a form of conditioning, often passed down through generations of women. This servitude mentality can lead to exhaustion, resentment, and the use of alcohol as a way to cope. In order to live an authentic, alcohol-free life, we must learn to matter most to ourselves - our needs, boundaries, and self-care must take priority. Unlearning the habit of people-pleasing and saying "no" can be incredibly difficult, as we fear being seen as selfish or unlovable. Connecting to our deeper feelings and inner child can help us overcome the fear and shame around prioritizing ourselves. Cultivating self-compassion and unconditional self-love is essential for breaking free from the cycle of servitude. When we put ourselves first, we not only heal ourselves, but create a ripple effect of transformation for those around us. #100 Alchemist AF

In this episode of Midlife AF, I explore the concept of alchemy - the process of transforming something ordinary into something extraordinary. I discuss how we all have the power within ourselves to be our own alchemists, to take our struggles and wounds and transmute them into self-love and self-compassion. I delve into the roots of emotional hyper-arousal, busy brains, and compulsive behaviors, tracing them back to childhood experiences where our sensitive, big emotions were often dismissed or suppressed. I talk about the importance of "re-parenting" ourselves, of showing up for the wounded inner child and validating their experience. Through this process of self-acceptance and self-nurturing, we can find the peace and freedom we've been searching for, without the need for external crutches like alcohol. It's an empowering message about tapping into our own inner alchemy to create the extraordinary lives we desire. Key Takeaways: Alchemy is the process of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary - we all have this power within us Sensitive, emotional children are often made to feel their big feelings are unacceptable, leading to wounds and "holes" that we try to fill later in life Re-parenting ourselves, validating our inner child, and showing self-love/compassion is the key to healing these wounds We already have everything we need inside to create the peace and freedom we crave - we don't need external substances like alcohol T Tapping into our inner alchemy allows us to transmute our struggles into something precious and life-affirming Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs Join Emma's VIP ELITE experience here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/offers/k7AXMNPG  Join Emma's Be The Lighthouse membership here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/bethelighthouse  Get Emma's Visualisation audio download at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/northstarvisualisation  Emma's Awareness worksheets for people wanting to prepare prior to taking a break from drinking or reduce their drinking by being more mindful about what and why they drink https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/awareness-worksheets-opt-in  Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset for people looking to take a quick reset https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset  Join The Self-Paced Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/aae  Work with me privately: I have two options for my private 1:1 coaching you can either do a 30 day break with me as your pocket PT with my Em G in Your Pocket package. #99 Abundant AF

In this episode of Midlife AF, I have an insightful conversation about the importance of self-love and compassion when addressing alcohol use. I explain how our inner critic and tendency to self-flagellate often stems from childhood experiences where our emotions were not fully validated. I talk about how our drinking behaviours are not character flaws, but rather coping mechanisms our subconscious has developed to deal with distress. The key is to approach change with love and understanding for these protective parts of ourselves, rather than harsh judgment. I also discuss the challenges of doing inner work while still drinking, and why taking a break from alcohol can facilitate deeper personal growth. Episode Highlights: Our inner critic and tendency to self-punish when trying to change drinking behaviours often originates from childhood experiences where our emotions were not fully validated. Drinking behaviours are coping mechanisms, not character flaws - they develop to help us deal with distress and dysregulation. Approaching change with self-love and compassion for our protective parts is more effective than harsh self-judgment. Taking a break from alcohol can create space for deeper personal growth and inner work. #98 Awakened AF

In this episode of Midlife AF, I discuss the stigma and misconceptions around giving up alcohol. I share my personal journey of stopping drinking at age 46 and the profound awakening and self-discovery that followed. I challenge the notion that only "problem drinkers" or "alcoholics" should stop drinking and argue that alcohol is harmful for everyone. Giving up alcohol is not a punishment, but an opportunity for growth, authenticity, and reclaiming our true selves. Key Takeaways:  The alcohol industry and recovery movement have perpetuated the myth that only "problem drinkers" should stop drinking, creating unnecessary stigma Alcohol is a harmful substance for everyone, not just those labeled as "alcoholics" Stopping drinking can lead to a profound awakening and self-discovery, allowing us to confront our true emotions and live more authentic lives Midlife is a time of great transition and opportunity for growth, and giving up alcohol can be a powerful catalyst for this process We need to stop being so compliant and start "rattling the cage" to create the lives we truly want My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs Join Emma's VIP ELITE experience here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/offers/k7AXMNPG  Join Emma's Be The Lighthouse membership here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/bethelighthouse  Get Emma's Visualisation audio download at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/northstarvisualisation  Emma's Awareness worksheets for people wanting to prepare prior to taking a break from drinking or reduce their drinking by being more mindful about what and why they drink https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/awareness-worksheets-opt-in  Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset for people looking to take a quick reset https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/fivedayreset  Join The Self-Paced Great Aussie Alcohol Experiment at https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/aae  Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching Loved this episode? In this episode, I discuss the concept of "rebirthing" and how we go through many different "skins" or versions of ourselves throughout our lives. I talk about the shame and stigma often associated with struggling with alcohol, and how my approach to helping people change their relationship with alcohol is focused on understanding the reasons behind our drinking, rather than just trying to abstain through willpower alone. Takeaways:  Rebirthing and shedding our "skins" is a natural part of the human experience, especially for women in midlife Shame and stigma around alcohol use can make it harder to make lasting changes My approach focuses on understanding the reasons behind our drinking, not just trying to abstain through willpower Joining a supportive community and program can be a game-changer in changing our relationship with alcohol Self-compassion and not beating ourselves up when we "fall off the wagon" is crucial Underlying factors like trauma, neurodivergence, and other life experiences can play a big role in our relationship with alcohol My Upcoming Coached Events & Programs Join Emma's 5 Day Alcohol Reset LIVE here: https://www.hoperisingcoaching.com/reset  Episode links & Resources Learn more about Emma Gilmour at: www.hoperisingcoaching.com Follow Emma Gilmour on insta @hoperisingcoaching Loved this episode? #96 Safe AF

In this episode of Midlife AF, I discuss the crucial importance of emotional safety and how it relates to the alcohol-free journey. I share my personal experiences and insights on how suppressing difficult emotions through alcohol use can be a form of spiritual bypassing, and how societal expectations around happiness and resilience can further compound this issue. I also chat about the need to create inner safety and validation for ourselves, rather than relying on external coping mechanisms like alcohol. Key Takeaways: Emotional safety is a crucial foundation for sustainable alcohol-free living. Suppressing difficult emotions through alcohol use or spiritual bypassing can prolong problems rather than resolve them. We must reparent ourselves with emotionally regulated care and validation, rather than judgment and unrealistic expectations. Finding true joy and fulfilment comes from exploring our interests and passions, not external validation or coping mechanisms. #95 Just AF

This week we are exploring the concept of the "just world theory" and how it relates to our tendency to blame victims, especially when it comes to issues around alcohol and adversity. I share personal experiences of being bullied and isolated, and how that impacted my sense of self and emotional processing. I also chat about the importance of validating our feelings, even the difficult ones, and how practices like Somatic Experiencing, breathwork, and internal family systems work have helped me learn to sit with and process my emotions. Key Takeaways:  The "just world theory" suggests that bad things don't happen to good people, leading to victim-blaming and isolation for those experiencing hardship. Childhood experiences of not being allowed to feel our emotions can lead to a lifelong struggle with numbness, disconnection, and control anxiety. Validating our own experiences and feelings, rather than dismissing them, is crucial for mental wellness and self-care. Reaching out to support friends and loved ones who are hurting, even if they don't immediately respond, can make a significant difference. Continuing to explore practices like internal family systems, parts work, and improving interoceptive awareness can help us better process our experiences and emotions. Amanda shares her personal journey and insights on navigating the complexities of relationships affected by addiction.
