There is a "Science to Sisterhood" so says Anika Allen with 5-Star Friendships! An organization she began during the pandemic that stays on the cutting edge of research on the importance of friendship in terms of life longevity. Today there is a national epidemic where 20% of our population suffer from loneliness. She also pointed out that since the lifespan of women is longer than men, some 80% of women will die alone. Therefore, it's important to develop friendships. In a social setting, you can let your clothes, a broach or tie be a focal point to start a conversation. Tyasia Raynae is the Chair of the 31st Valencia Student Film Celebration February 28th on the East Campus. She is the 2nd African American student to chair the entire celebration (the first was in 2014). Dawn Ofodile and Lawrence Davis from the City of Orlando and Alpha Phi Alpha respectively, shared the upcoming calendar of events commemorating what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's 97th birthday. "Mission Possible" is this year's theme which focuses on everything from a candlelight vigil to the Great Day of Service at the Orange County Convention center where 5,000 volunteers are needed to package food for one million people in need. There has been an approximate 6,500 student enrollment decline this year. This method will have to be financially supported by OCPS funds and can ultimately drain the taxpayer coffers. An alternative offered by Jarvis Wheeler with LIFT Orlando, was modeled after a school in Harlem and works independently in their neighborhood school which is Orange Center Elementary. Sickle Cell Anemia affects more black people than any other ethnicity. However, people from Africa, the Caribbean, Mediterranean and of Middle Eastern descent can be diagnosed with the disease. The most effective blood test to diagnose sickle cell anemia is hemoglobin electrophoresis, also known as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which identifies and measures the abnormal form of hemoglobin that causes the disease. A complete blood count (CBC) can also detect anemia by showing low hemoglobin levels and a high number of immature red blood cells, while a peripheral blood smear can reveal the distinctive sickle-shaped red blood cells.
