World Cup Final, Oklahoma Soccer Brand Reveal, Good Stadium News + more
The World Cup closes this weekend so Morning Kickaround is here to get everyone ready for the Final and whatever the Bronze Medal Match is all about. Will Spain’s metronomic style choke out Argentina’s late game magic? Only time will tell, but Robert and Jason will do their best to predict what's going to happen. We then have a badge explainer for Oklahoma City’s return to the United Soccer League. How can the group known as OKC Soccer brand themselves in a unique way that pleases everyone? Let’s just say they fell a little bit short. Also, New Mexico United took one more step towards building their soccer specific stadium with a legal victory that will secure their preferred stadium site at Balloon Fiesta Park. Finally, we #DotTheMap with our newest MK Ultras. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! Get Your MK Ultra Merch! Follow us on X. MLS World Cup Marketing Push, Vancouver Stadium Update + More
It’s Wednesday, Major League Soccer returns on Thursday. The World Cup is almost over. The winds of change are upon us here at Morning Kickaround. On Monday, we asked what MLS could do to better capitalize on American World Cup Fever. They have since answered that question with what they are calling “the largest coordinated marketing campaign in league history.” What does that mean and will it have the intended effects? Could they have launched this a bit late in the game? To that end, we also catch up on the headlines surrounding the USA’s top domestic league. It’s been two months since we have given this league any thought. We have to sift through coaching changes, big signings, stadium news, and a ton more before we even think about games kicking back off on Thursday. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! New Stadium Renderings, "Fixing" Pay To Pay, Dot The Map + More
It’s a Friday on Morning Kickaround and there’s a lot to discuss. We open with high ratings for the U.S. Men’s National Team loss to Belgium. Was this a missed opportunity for our national team to further grow the game in this country? Was that stinker of a performance a missed opportunity for soccer in this country? We then tackle an age-old question in American soccer: How do we fix that pay-to-play problem that American soccer seems to have. Why does youth soccer cost so much and how do we make the game accessible and affordable to more kids looking for quality coaching and quality competition? The answer is not nearly as simple as people would like. In a related story, we have a soccer under construction segment about new venues in Port St. Lucie, Florida. We conclude with American soccer being weird with gorilla mascots and we #DotTheMap with our newest MK Ultras. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! USMNT is OUT of the World Cup, Quarter Finals Set + More
And just like that, it was over. Today is MK’s postmortem of the U.S. Men’s National Team in the World Cup. The USA went out with a mighty whimper after all the hype leading up to the Round of 16 match against Belgium. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis look back on the defeat and try to avoid the standard American discussion about all the systemic reasons the United States can’t get over the Round of 16 hump. SHould we really be that upset about how this tournament ended up? We also take a look at why growth matters and whether this World Cup matters in terms of the game’s popularity in this country. What do fans hope to accomplish with this growth? Will that growth actually fuel World Cup success? Tune in for the discussion, stay for the unhinged Jason rants. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! Get Your MK Ultra Merch! Follow us on X. Balogun's Ban Suspended, USMNT v. Belgium, Palm Beach Stadium Pitch
It’s U.S. Men’s National Team matchday and we… have a bit of a sour taste in our mouths. Sure, we are happy that Folarin Balogun can play in tonight’s match against Belgium. We just don’t like the optics of FIFA appearing to make up rules to suspend his red card, seemingly at the behest of the current tenant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Does anyone come across looking good here? How is Belgium taking the news? More positively, what’s our outlook for this match? It’s clear that Mauricio Pochettino won’t have any qualms about playing Balogun in a knockout round game, so does he improve the USA’s chances? Will simply having Flo available boost the squad’s morale? Robert and Jason give their thoughts on what will happen tonight. Also, Palm Beach, Florida is moving closer to having a stadium for their future USL expansion side. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! USMNT Reaches Round of 16, American World Cup Viewership, Dot The Map
Happy 4th of July to all those who celebrate American independence! Morning Kickaround uses its independence to get you into a thrilling weekend of World Cup action. The United States won a knockout round game on Wednesday over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it came at a cost. A fine performance was sort of marred by a Folarin Balogun red card in the middle of the second half. The Americans hung on to win the game after Malik Tillman banged home a free kick to set up a rematch of the 2014 round of 16 against Belgium. What will Maurico Pochettino do without his preferred striker? Also, Fox reported record viewership for a soccer match in the United States in the game against Bosnia. Does this reflect a growing interest in soccer or just Americans’ love of a big time event and how has soccer broadcasting evolved since the USA made their return to the World Cup back in 1990? Finally, we #DotTheMap with our latest supporters. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! Get Your MK Ultra Merch! Follow us on X. World Cup Knockouts, Lewandowski to Chicago Fire, USL Space Coast + More
Monday is here and so are the World Cup knockout rounds! After Canada’s win yesterday there’s a ton to look forward to. Off the field, the U.S. Men’s National Team is looking to keep Mauricio Pochettino around after the World Cup. They’ve offered him a contract extension that would keep him here through the 2030 tournament despite popular opinion saying he’s heading back to club football after the tournament ends.Second cycle managers rarely pan out and certainly have not for the USMNT. Can Poch break that cycle? Also, MLS is adding another aging superstar from Europe as Robert Lewandowski is signing with the Chicago Fire for two years. What does this mean for the Fire and soccer in Chicago? Superstar signings not withstanding, we ask a big question: Are the American domestic leagues doing enough to capitalize off World Cup fever? Should MLS be ramping up the national ads during World Cup matches? What about the USL? The NWSL had a tour bus rolling around to promote the NWSL Challenge Cup Final last Friday. Is the internet showing any signs of increased interest in domestic soccer? Finally, the people who brought us Orlando City SC are bringing pro soccer to Melbourne, Florida. The city has a stadium deal in place and is looking to get an expansion club in the USL. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! Get Your MK Ultra Merch! USA Lose But Advance, Coaches Handling Press, and MLS Stadium Updates
Friday is here, but with the World Cup blending all the days together, what difference does it make? Anyway, the U.S. Men's National Team fell to Turkiye last night on a last second goal. Does it really matter considering they had already won the group and were playing the backups? Nothing may change materially for their World Cup standing, but did we get a negative vibes shift from the defeat? Also, Mauricio Pochettino had some strange comments after the match as he got a little snippy with the media. However, what he said was nothing compared to what Jesse Marsch said after Canada’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. We wrap up with some stadium news as FC Dallas’s renovations saw an unfortunately timed mishap during a Swedish training session. Also, the New England Revolution updated their timeline for their new home on the Mystic River in Everett. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! Best USMNT Performance Since 1930, World Cup Group Stage Finales, + More
Are England and other big sides getting beneficial treatment from referees? Between questionable no-calls, Jude Bellingham remaining on the pitch after covering his mouth, and a possible missed red card against Lionel Messi, there have been a lot of reasons to think there is a slant in favor of big nations at the World Cup. Today is also the start of the final round of group stage games. The next four days will be loaded with fateful matches and dead rubbers. Is the volume of non-important games a problem with the new tiebreaking procedure of using head-to-head instead of goal differential? We then welcome Tom McCabe and Kirk Rudell from the An American Game podcast to discuss the USA’s history at the World Cup. We step into the Way Back Machine and travel to 1930 to talk about the first American soccer song, the first World Cup hat trick, and more. Finally, New Orleans is renovating a minor league baseball stadium to make way for a professional soccer team that hasn’t been announced. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! USA Wins Group, American Fan Chants, New Oakland Roots Proposal + More!
The U.S. Men’s National Team are group winners with a match to spare, just like we all predicted before the tournament. All that stress about Christian Pulisic’s health, the Australian defense clogging up what was a free-flowing side against Paraguay, and general USMNT pessimism proved ultimately irrelevant in the 2-0 win over the Socceroos. The guys deliver their thoughts on not only the win, but also the group sing-a-long of John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads after the victory. Is this American chant culture delivering a moment of beauty or is this evidence that American fans lack creativity when it comes to singing in the stands? Also, are there any shocks at the bottom of the pile in the World Cup? Tunisia and Turkiye are really out already? Cabo Verde could advance beyond the group stage? Finally, we take a look at the Oakland Roots and their quest to find a permanent place to play in the East Bay? https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! USMNT World Cup Matchday, Aussie Rivalry, Dot The Map +more
It’s USMNT Matchday! The Socceroos of Australia are in Seattle to do battle with the Americans and there’s apparently beef coming from the Land Down Under. There are so many questions surrounding the match that we don’t know where to begin. Is the Aussie beef legit? Will Christian Pulisic play? What happens if he doesn’t? We then get into the highlights and lowlights of the tournament so far. We’ve seen great goals, shocking upsets, and even a brewing media war if certain sources are to be believed. We also break down the popularity of soccer against the popularity of UFC. Why does the less watched bloodsport command so much more discussion in this country than the beautiful game? USMNT On Fire, World Cup Craziness, and more
Morning Kickaround is here to help get your head around a thrilling first weekend of the World Cup. From the U.S. Men’s National Team and their dream start to Tunisia getting smoked by Sweden, the first weekend seemingly had everything we needed from it. There was surely a lot to like from the USMNT. Folarin Balogun was stellar, Gio Reyna got a much needed goal, and hopefully Christian Pulisic is okay after coming off at halftime. Elsewhere in the World Cup, Cape Verde, Curacao, Uzbekistan, DR Congo, Haiti, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and South Africa wrote a joint statement in protest of UEFA President Alexander Ceferin calling many games “uninteresting’ due to the expanded format. World Cup Is Here, USMNT Expectations, New Clubs And Dot The Map
The World Cup is here! After years of waiting and sifting through corruption, late-stage capitalism, and other cringey details, the actual soccer and global unity of the World Cup is upon us. With that in mind, we have our MK Ultra’s reports on the first few groups of the tournament. Today, we dig into the soccer, culinary, political, and cultural backgrounds of the nations playing in groups A, B, and C. Also, we have to talk about the U.S. Men’s National Team opening their campaign against Paraguay tonight. World Cup Grievances, Fever Pitch for USMNT, Women's Calendar Switch + More
World Cup Week is upon us! The USMNT had their final tune-up match this weekend in Chicago. The 2-1 loss to Germany was filled with both positives and negatives. The atmosphere was festive, Jedi Robinson scored a banger, but they ultimately fell to the Germans. Also, the USL Super League is abandoning its fall-spring calendar to better align with the NWSL. What does this mean for the league as a whole? What was behind their original calendar to begin with? What does this mean for the USL overall? So many questions. Finally, Robert and Jason take part in the time honored American tradition of complaining about things. They have more than a few grievances to aiur when it comes to this global soccer circus, so the guys are going to get it all out now so they can enjoy the soccer when it kicks off at the Azteca on Thursday afternoon. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! USL vs. MLS Battlegrounds, Simon Evans, Dot The Map, + Member Bonus Friday
We are at T-minus six days until the World Cup and T-minus seven days until the USMNT kicks off their run against Paraguay. The signs are there that the United States is ramping up for the hoopla. Where does the hype level stand for the MK Ultras and the country and world at large? What about the expectations for the USMNT? Also, Greenville Triumph opened their new stadium to a sell out crowd and a victory. How does the new venue compare to one of the more talked about renderings in MK history? Simon Evans then joins the show to discuss the state of lower league American soccer after private equity investment first got involved. He also touches on the MLS Next Pro vs. USL model of lower league soccer, what needs to be done to get teams to stick around, and more. World Cup Water Breaks, Floating Watch Parties, Cotton Bowl Plans, + more
Happy Monday! Holy cow there’s only ten days until the World Cup. With that in mind, we have another World Cup heavy show today. The U.S. Men’s National Team started their pre-tournament friendlies with a 3-2 win over Senegal, complete with a fantastic performance from Christian Pulisic. How do we feel after this match and are we any more confident in Mauricio Pochettino's squad? Also, with hydration breaks mandatory in this World Cup, will more teams treat them like a “basketball timeout” like Poch did in the Senegal match? Is that even allowed? Do we want mid-half tactical conversations? We then check in on some of the more unique watch parties going down for the World Cup, including a floating shindig in Seattle. Finally, we set the World Cup aside. Soccer Under Construction takes us to Dallas where Atletico Dallas has plans for the Cotton Bowl to make the seating capacity more realistic and we dig into MLS’s ratings on AppleTV. https://www.youtube.com/@MorningKickaround You can now support the show on Ko-Fi! World Cup Ticket Price Crash, Big League Plans in Sacramento + more
Happy Friday from Morning Kickaround! We bring you a World Cup heavy show to launch you into the weekend. World Cup officials in Foxborough are telling people without tickets not to show up to the stadium. Kraft Sports Group CEO Jim Nolan has a blunt message for anyone thinking about coming to the stadium without a ticket. There’s some soccer under construction news to go in there as well. Sacramento is pushing the sale of expensive luxury suites at their new stadium. What does this say about their ambitions as a club? Is USL Premier really their top aim? Also, Dalton, Georgia is claiming to be Soccer Town USA. Is this a legitimate claim or are there better places out there? But it’s back to the World Cup as TravelFootballFan joins the show to update us on the latest with ticket prices. Is a price crash coming as demand slows down? USMNT Roster Is Official, FIFA Kills FIFA+, Todd Smith Author of "Relegated"
Welcome back from the holiday weekend! Morning Kickaround is here for the final countdown to the World Cup! We open the show with the USMNT roster. What do we think of this 26 player squad that will take on the world? What about the details behind how the roster was revealed and media “leaking” the roster? Lots to discuss over there. Also, FIFA quietly moved FIFA+ content over to DAZN. Is there a fear that content that was once free will soon become hidden behind a paywall? Author Todd Smith then joins the show to discuss his new book Relegated: One American’s Pints & Pies Journey from the Top to the Bottom of English Football. His book details his travels throughout the lower levels of the English football pyramid and how it’s vastly different from the spectacle of the Premier League and other large outfits throughout the world. Finally, we digest the discussion with Todd and what it means for community style clubs in the United States. It may not be possible to truly replicate that ecosystem, but what can be done to connect more American clubs to their local communities? Spokane Zephyr is shutting down after two seasons of action in the winter women’s league. Was it worth it for them to try this project if it shut down after only two seasons? What does this mean for the future of the Super League? Also, the Tampa Bay Sun don’t seem to have the stadium plans they expected to have. Fox’s Tyler Terens then joins the show on the heels of him joining their World Cup broadcast team. Tyler talks about his journey in soccer commentary, pronouncing names, and much more. Expansion Club Savior, Dotting The Map, World Cup Countdown
Wednesday is here and there’s a lot to get to. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis open with the most MLS proposal ever: clock stoppages during play. Will this most American of inventions come to the global game? Also, will the USL be able to make any gains because of the World Cup or should they follow MLS and take an extended break during the world’s soccer party? We then bring on a potential USL expansion club savior in new Sporting Cascades owner Bill Cornog. He’s a private equity guy investing in his local club in Eugene, Oregon. What are his thoughts on the next steps for the expansion club, the additional hurdles that seem to pop up everywhere for new clubs, and the involvement of private equity in sports? Finally, what’s the state of USL expansion across the board? Check out the show live Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 AM ET on YouTube where you can join the channel and become an MK Ultra. Women's Open Cup? Miami Snubbing Fans, College Soccer Changes, and more
It’s another Monday Morning and we are here to talk about Miami and the MLS Media. Are Messi and his men snubbing their fans as well as the media? Despite their first win at their new stadium, their fans had a few things to say about their lack of connection to the players. They’ve also been a bit evasive of the media. Is this a Miami thing or does this say something about the league and its media relations? Also, there are discussions happening about a potential women’s tournament featuring every pro team across the three leagues. Is a Women’s U.S. Open Cup on the horizon? Brooks Laimbeer then joins the show as college soccer provisionally approved a two semester season plan. He explains what this means for not only college soccer, but the amateur and pre-professional game as a whole. Finally, what do we think of the USL’s new CEO and where does their quest for a first division and pro/rel stand? Morning Kickaround returns after a Wednesday off with a Friday Free-For-All to kickstart the weekend. The Chicago Fire have a super-sized name for their new stadium and it’s going to make you want some fries. The Fire will play at McDonald’s Park when the new stadium opens and the reactions are a bit mixed. American soccer continues to be weird as Cristo Fernandez, better known as Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso, is coming to the USL Championship with El Paso Locomotive. How serious is this move? Also, how are the promotion/relegation races looking overseas and will the future USL system be able to replicate that level of excitement when it comes along? MK Live! FIFA Host City Kits, Rhode Island Review, and more
It’s recovery Monday for the Morning Kickaround crew as they are back from Rhode Island and more or less ready to resume normal operations. At least as normal as they can be with FIFA introducing unique kits for each host city priced at a cool $375. What’s the point of these besides making money? Are the designs even that great? Who would pay that price for a kit that no team will ever wear? Next up, Sporting Cascades finally has some forward motion with new ownership. Robert and Jason dig into the project and how this sort of momentum is very welcome. Finally, the guys look back on the Rhode Island trip and thank the ultras that made it possible. USL Labor agreement, Investment In MLS Next Pro, TST 2026 + More
It's a loaded Friday here on Morning Kickaround. Let's hope we all have the energy to get through it all. We open with the news we have all been waiting for. The USL and USLPA have come to a tenative agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement for both the USL Championship and the forthcoming USL Premier. The details are a bit light at the moment, but this is quite a welcome development. Also, MLS Next Pro is the latest league to welcome a private equity firm into their investment fold and a group from Las Vegas has interest in the Vancouver Whitecaps. We also bring on Luke Rubin, head of team relations for The Soccer Tournament. He answers all our questions about the fourth year of this event in Cary, North Carolina. We round out the show with an examination of the sneakiy changes to the Pro League Standards and we #DotTheMap with our newest MK Ultras. Save the Caps, "Backup League" Stadiums, LAFC Protests, and more
Wednesday is here and so are Robert Kerr and Jason Davis for another edition of Morning Kickaround. We start by joining the latest soccer crusade to save the Vancouver Whitecaps. With rumors of relocation flying around because of their lack of a quality playing surface, the people are flying into action to try and keep the Caps in British Columbia. Soccer is still being built from the ground up as a couple MLS Next Pro clubs have some stadium news. Also, does it make sense to build shiny new soccer stadiums for what some cynics call a "backup league"? Finally, Grasshopper, the Swiss club owned by LAFC, is in disarray after barely two years of ownership and we have the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup. Soccer Stadium News, NYPD Says No, Because Football joins + More
Morning Kickaround may or may not be the cure for your case of the Mondays, but we're going to give it our best shot. We open in the plains of Iowa where we clank the clanger for a professional soccer stadium in Des Moines. The project entering the fun part of asking for public money and working with architects to develop what we really want: stadium renderings. Speaking of renderings, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds have some new ones from their renovations of Highmark Stadium. Also, New York City has more grim news for World Cup watch parties. NYPD and the Department of Transportation are no longer supporting street watch parties in the cities. We then weclome Andrew from Because Football onto the show. Andrew is travelling to all the World Cup host cities before the start of the tournament. We dig into what he's learned about them and what his motivation is for all this adventure. Finally, Jason unboxes some gifts and we tease a little ticket giveaway courtesty of Blackstone Valley Tourism. MLS Rookie Coaches, Soccer History Rhymes, Italy in World Cup? + more
It's a Rob and Luke Friday on Morning Kickaround and they have the rubrics out for the rookie MLS coaches. MLS has a plethora of new coaches on the scene and Robert and Luke break them down and give them all grades for the first quarter of the MLS season. Tom and Kirk from the An American Game podcast return the show next to shed some light on how American soccer history does not repeat itself, but the rhymes are everywhere. The alphabet soup of leagues we have now is really no different from what was around more than a century ago. Finally, can Italy replace Iran in the World Cup? ALso, Luke shows off some of his collection of obscure kits and Rob does a live unboxing of a package sent to him by AC Boise's River Guard supporters group. Columbus To NWSL, USMNT Ticket Sales Problem, 50 Day World Cup Countdown
Welcome to Wednesday on Morning Kickaround, and today's show hits at one of the things holding down American soccer... Capitalism. Ticket prices for the World Cup continue to be sky high and sales are slower than expected. USMNT matches are even struggle to sell at the moment. Combo that with increasingly shady business practices by FIFA and you get.. a problem that FIFA doesn't care about and won't even try to solve. Also, how will the World Cup influence youth soccer and is there any hope for the problems that ail that system? In other news, the NWSL is coming to Columbus at the expense of $50 million in public funding to revamp a city park into a training facility for the new club. Finally, the GOAT is coming to Utah tonight, but what did it take to get him there and is it a good thing that Real Salt Lake is keeping this game at America First Field? USL Labor Beef Get Heated, Soccer Under Construction, Dot The Map
Today Morning Kickaround has to deal with an American soccer landscape that is kind of like Rob's hair... all over the place. The USL Labor beef takes center stage as a club president decided to take to Instagram to defend his club in the ongoing PR battle around the CBA negotiations. Why did he adopt this tactic and was it actually a good idea? Also, stadium projects throughout the country continue to grow. Geenville, South Carolina is making waves with a call for investment, but so are Omaha, Toledo, and Reno. Finally, we #DotTheMap with our newest Ultras to finish out the week on a high note. Crocker Quits, Mascherano Walks, Guest Will Bunch, Cupsets + More
It's a Wednesday of unexpected coaching and adminstrative changes on Morning Kickaround. First up is the sudden departure of Javier Mascherano from Inter Miami. Why the sudden change here? We also saw Matt Crocker depart his post as the USMNT's Sporting Director to take up a similar role in Saudi Arabia. On the happier side of surprises, we had a couple of Cupsets to talk about last night with Louisville City and Colorado Springs Switchbacks taking MLS scalps into the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals. We are then joined by WIll Bunch, national opinion writer for the Philadelphia Inquierer for a look at the mental gymnastics we are all performing to square ourselves with this World Cup. Finally, Nashville SC scored a 1-0 win over Club America in Mexico for an unexpected spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals and LAFC will join them. MLS Joins the Open Cup, NWSL Expansion Check In, + More
It's a Monday on Morning Kickaround and it's full of surprises. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis are joined, somewhat enexpectedly by Mitch Baruchowitz, principal owner of Westchester SC, to discuss his club's upcoming home match against New York City FC in the U.S. Open Cup. How big of a moment is this for the young USL League One club and what is he hoping to get out of the game, aside from a victory, of course. Also, we check in on the expansion teams on the women's side of the game. How are Boston Legacy and Denver Summit doing in the NWSL and how about Sporting Jax leading the way in the USL Super League? LA's World Cup Fanfest will also charge attendees in a move that reflects the extreme cost of this American World Cup and there are 15 other U.S. Open Cup matches to discuss after we chat with Mitch. Another Club Considers Rebrand, MLS Wish List, Dot The Map + More
Exciting to kick this Friday around? Robert Kerr and Jason Davis sure are. Plenty of rumors are swirling around the MLS world. For one, Neymar is linked to FC Cincinnati. Is this a legitimate interest or a ploy to drum up interest from elsewhere? What do the people think of the Colorado Rapids re-branding efforts? Also, who makes the show's MLS transfer wishlist? Finally, in a viewer chosen bonus segment, we ask if MLS will ever return to local television coverage? World Cup Transportation Nightmares, USL Expansion Check, MLS to Sacramento?
Morning Kickaround on a Wednesday? What could be better... or even less normal. The World Cup continues to wreak havoc on local infastructure. FIFA announeced yesterday that Penn Station will close to non-ticket holders for four hours every matchday, creating more headaches for non-soccer people. Also, how are the expansion teams in the USL doing early on in the season? With Vancouver relocation talk in the air, would you want your hometown to join the bigtime if iot meant taking another city's team? Finally, at the behest of the viewers, Robert and Jason discuss the state of the Concacaf Champions Cup after yesterday's quarterfinal matches. AC Boise Home Opener, Nu Stadium in Miami, and more
Welcome back to Morning Kickaround for the week and... ROB IS STILL HERE! Mr. Kerr got himself a new new job that will allow him to stay with us on the live show, which means he has thoughts on Inter Miami's Nu Stadium. The house that Messi built opened with a 2-2 draw against Austin, inclduing a goal from the G.O.A.T. The natives are resltess in New Jersey. Despite some early season success, Red Bull New York fans are not exactly showing up and they are throwing shade at the club for what they are asking of their most loyal supporters. Also, USL players are still protesting their lack of a CBA, but are their efforts losing steam? Unlike Red Bull New York, AC Boise isn't struggling to connect with its supporters. They had their home opener, so their CEO Brad Stith join us for a little recap of how the eveinng went in the Idaho capital. Finally, we #DotTheMap and handle the apparently sensitive topic of marketing gimmicks to get fans out to American soccer matches. USL Corp Shakeup, New Protest Move, TravelFutbolFan On World Cup Tickets
It's the last week of Robert on the live show on Morning Kickaround and we have a alot to discuss on this Monday. We open with the latest on the USL Championship player protests. What did they have up their sleeves for this fourth week of action without a new collective bargaining agreement. The USL is also rumored to be making a leadership change with deputy CEO Justin Papadakis reportedly leaving the league after being voted off the board. TravelFutbolFan then joins the show to break down the latest World Cup ticketing drama, the dry run in Foxborough last week, and more about this summer's giant soccer party. USMNT Questions, New Mexico United Hype and Stadium + More
It certainly is a Friday-Free-For-All on Morning Kickaround today. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis are deep in international break mode with a USMNT heavy show. They ask a few burning questions they want answered in this week's friendlies against Belgium and Portugal in Atlanta. Will Gio Reyna play? What is Weston McKennie's role on the team? Are we confident in the goalkeeping? How are things looking in regards to their opponent to conclude the World Cup group stage? They also update the Ultras on New Mexico United's stadium project before hyping the club's home opener this weekend. Finally, they #DotTheMap with the newest MK Ultras. Sacramento Doubles Down, World Cup Playoffs, Expansion news + More
One day without Robert Kerr was too much, so it's great that he's back for this hump day edition of Morning Kickaround. The show opens with the latest World Cup news on the eve of the final qualification playoffs. A group of European supporters are suing over the crazy cost of match tickets for this summer's marquee event. Where will their efforts lead? Also, Sacramento released some updated stadium renderings that are not only gorgeous, but perhaps signal some bigger intentions. Perhaps a revival of the city's MLS expansion bid is on the table? We then welcome Ben Ohashi, AC Boise's cheif marketing officer. Needless to say he has a lot to do with only ten days remaining before the club's home opener. Finally, is the NWSL coming to Columbus? Pepi Deal Off (Again), Grand Rapids Stadium Update, Focus On Fort Wayne + More
Morning Kickaround is back for another week, even if Rob is sitting this Monday out. Solo Jason Davis takes on Antoine Griezmann jumping across the pond to join Orlando City this summer. What can he bring to a Lions team that's looking to finally make some noise in MLS? In other transfer news, Ricardo Pepi still can't seal his move to Fulham. The deal from PSV is off... for now. Will this long rumored move ever happen? Also, the USL Championship CBA protstets are still on-going with very little movement in negotiations for a new agreement. Things have bled over from stillness at the start of matches into a second protest after halftime. Are these messages landing? We are then joined by Brian Biedenbach, podcast host at Fort Wayne Footy to talk about how Fort Wayne FC is progressing early in the USL League One tenure. Finally, Soccer Under Construction zeroes in on Grand Rapids and their progress on building Amway Stadium. USL Player Protests, Business Model Change, Club Debuts + more
It's a USL heavy Monday show on Morning Kickaround. The opening weekend of the USA's second and third tier leagues were full of drama. The biggest story was the players protest on the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement. Every game opened with a minute of players standing still while being virtually ignored by the league's television broadcast. Was this this right move for the players? By the league? What's next in this saga. On the positive side for the league, a handful of expansion clubs got their formal start, including friends of the show AC Boise. How did the new guys fare in opening weekend and how did the MK Ultras take it all in? Finally, has the USL outgrown its business model and how can it be updated to fit the league's current reality? We would say Happy Friday, but with the USL Championship's opening weekend in danger we aren't sure that it is one. Club Eleven is currently telling the story of their 12,000 mile road trip in a school bus turned soccer museum in a podcast series called The Soccer Odyssey. It's another Hump Day on Morning Kickaround with Robert Kerr and Jason Davis.
