USL Agrees to Share, AC Boise Promotion, New Team Brand Reveal + more
Free-for-all Friday is here and there’s no time for silly puns with all we have to chat about. The USL got some big news this week with the official ratification of their new collective bargaining agreement. The players made some big gains in annual salary, housing, and healthcare.The clubs also made a big move by developing a revenue sharing model between all three tiers of professional clubs. National television revenue, expansion fees, and more league revenue will not be distributed amongst the member clubs. Let’s hope that increases stability among the roster of teams in the competition. The USL expansion group in Reno revealed their branding, which means Robert and Jason have a badge to analyze. Let’s just say they have thoughts about horses and the color orange. We also ask the MK Ultras for their opinions. AC Boise announced they are making the jump to the USL Championship after only one week in USL League One. To go with that news, they also revealed an expanded stadium plan for next season that looks fantastic. We have the renderings. The club’s CEO and co-founder Brad Stith returns to the show to share the excitement and talk about what led up to these moves. NC Courage, Space Coast Stadiums, Kai Velmer on Youth Soccer, and more
The holiday weekend is over and Morning Kickaround is refreshed and ready for more American soccer. Today we open with some stadium news coming out of the south, starting in North Carolina. The North Carolina Courage are trying to upgrade their stadium situation, claiming the WakeMed Soccer Park is not cutting it anymore. While owner Steve Malik says relocation isn’t on the table, yet, why should we here at Morning Kickaround believe him considering how he’s handled his men’s team? Kei Velmer then joins the show to talk about access to youth soccer and how to make a system that works better for more people. Kai is the Executive Director of the United Soccer Association in Florida, where he has helped build a robust youth system with over 40 teams and promotion and relegation between divisions. MLS Fully Returns To Open Cup, Soccer Wars Update Jacksonville, Crowdfunding Dothan United
It’s Wednesday here on Morning Kickaround and it’s a great day to celebrate the U.S. Open Cup. Major League Soccer announced it will return to sending all its American based teams to the country's oldest soccer competition next year when their calendar switches to align with most of Europe. MLS squads would enter the competition in July with the Final taking place in December. What led MLS to reverse course and return to the Open Cup and will it bring some a much needed boost to the competition? What’s going to happen with the USL’s participation? In other news, Jacksonville Armada’s resurrection attempt is hitting some snags. Their stadium deal isn’t quite materializing as they would like, which is leading to a potential suspension of operations. Robert and Jason read the ownership statement and break it down in terms of the soccer landscape in north Florida and how it relates to the two professional clubs the city already has. Also, amateur side Dothan United is creating some headlines with their attempts to turn professional. Instead of asking for some rich person to fund their promotion, they are looking to the masses in a crowdsourcing format to raise funds. Best In MLS, TLFC Badges, U.S. Soccer Youth Takeover, and more
Welcome back to the week and welcome back to Morning Kickaround. We are going to begin on the pitch this week with a look at Nashville SC and their pursuit of the MLS points record. Nashville is only the latest in a growing line of clubs aiming of historical regular season supremacy. Inter Miami just set the record two years ago and it wasn’t long ago the Los Angeles FC and the New England Revolution made runs at the top mark. Why does this keep happening and is Nashville really the most talented regular season of all time? WIll it make a difference once the playoffs kickoff? We then pivot to the youth of America with the U.S. Soccer Federation absorbing U.S. Youth Soccer into its ranks. The move will take place over two years and end with U.S. Soccer fully controlling youth soccer for the first time. This sounds like the sort of move that can unify the federation in ways we haven’t seen before, but it's making Robert, MK’s resident soccer dad, a bit nervous. USL Pro Rel Update, Dead Team News, Dot The Map + More
It’s a Friday and we are looking towards the future here on Morning Kickaround. We start with the fun stuff and update on the USL’s first division efforts courtesy of league president Paul McDonough himself. The big man went on Tim Howard and Landon Donovan’s podcast to talk about his first division project, including the future of promotion and relegation, the pursuit of changes to U.S. Soccer’s Professional League Standards, and more. We stay on the plus side of things with Soccer Under Construction in Phoenix. Phoenix Rising have released new renderings for a very impressive stadium with their eyes on the USL Premier League. There is also stadium news out of the southern tip of Texas as the city of Brownsville is also looking to erect a stadium and get themselves a USL franchise. With all the good must come the bad, however. Santa Barbara Sky, the long planned USL Championship expansion side, appears to be dead on the California coast. The Premier League is looking to capitalize off the World Cup boom in the United States with their coast-to-coast watch parties for the opening weekend. Does this invasion from abroad come at the expense of American soccer or does the league’s self-promotion also lift American clubs? Robert and Jason discuss. Mexico, meanwhile, is trying to move closer to its American cousins. Liga MX temporarily suspended promotion and relegation during the Covid pandemic to help save costs and is now taking steps to make that suspension permanent. Mexico’s owners are getting together to alter the governance of the league that will keep all 18 of them in the top flight forever while protecting their profit margins. Color us surprised here at Morning Kickaround. Finally, we have an update on Boston Legacy’s efforts to rehabilitate White Stadium. The Massachusetts Supreme Court has cleared the way for construction to proceed at the historic stadium. The NWSL expansion club has a grand vision for the site that includes a state-of-the-art women’s soccer stadium and public access to the site for 15 hours a day, seven days a week. MLS Format Change, Long Island Soccer War, Nations League teamup + More
There’s no time for clever jokes and flashy ledes because there’s a ton for Robert Kerr and Jason Davis to discuss today. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but MLS is looking to adopt a new playoff format. The postseason bloat continues to swell as this latest proposal calls for 20 teams to make the playoffs in a league with only 30 teams. Did MLS make this overly complicated or did they do the best they could considering the circumstances they created for themselves? Next up we head to the frontlines of the American soccer wars as they pitch a battle on Long Island. The USL announced a new expansion side on Long Island that will play about a mile away from The Island FC of MLS Next Pro. Is this a good move for USL or should they simply cede that territory to MLS Next Pro because they got there first? Nothing makes sense in war, even a soccer war. We stay on the East Coast next as we drift down the pyramid into the American Premier Soccer League. The League’s General Secretary Bill Marth joins the show to get into the weeds of this amateur competition. What sets it apart from other amateur leagues? Next up on a busy morning is the alliance between Concacaf and UEFA and a potential rival to FIFA. American Teenager to EPL, Travel Futbol Fan, Turf Trouble + more
Welcome to Wednesday on Morning Kickaround! Jason is enjoying the Puerto Rican sunshine, so Luke Zagorski joins Robert Kerr for this hump day edition of the show. We open with American teenage Zavier Gozo singing with Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The Real Salt Lake wing back has six goals and five assists in MLS and is ready to take his talents to the Premier League. How does he fit in with the rest of the Americans plying their trade in England? Next up is a controversy involving the turf at Gillette Stadium. The stadium was outfitted with a grass surface for the World Cup and the switch back to an artificial surface has been bungled a bit. The Revs played three games on turf that did not comply with the MLS’s Collective Bargaining Agreement before the problem was noticed and solved. The problem affects the NFL’s New England Patriots, so at least we know the solution will arrive in a timely manner. Our old friend TravelFutbolFan then joins the show after the madness that was the World Cup. His quest for relaxation isn’t going well as things just keep popping up when it comes to international soccer and travelling. Looking back at what went well logistically during the World Cup takes center stage here, but they also touch on the Colombia earthquakes, the scandals surrounding Gianni Infantino, and more. Clang the Clanger! It’s a new week of American soccer and we have billionaires to deal with. The club isn’t American, but the billionaire sure is. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon master himself, is looking to buy into Liverpool along with a consortium of other sleazy rich folk. Our resident Liverpool supporter, Robert, has thoughts that are bigger than Bezos’s bank account and none of them are complimentary towards the man. Jason does his best to talk him off the ledge. We do get back to positive stories and the soccer of the people, though. Infantino Temper Tantrum, Rio Grande Valley, Roots Money Issues, and more
Welcome back to the work week! At least Morning Kickaround can get it started on the right foot. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis open the show with an update on the Oakland Roots and their lease default at the Oakland Coliseum. They played their northern California rivalry match against Sacramento Republic at the big stadium, but they did miss their lease payment that was due Friday and they are now facing a midseason eviction. USL Ratings Hit, Ft Wayne FC doing It all, Dot The Map + More
Welcome to Friday on Morning Kickaround. We wish it was all fun and good news today. Robert Kerr and Jason Davis open with the unfortunate news that the Oakland Roots are behind on payments for the Oakland Coliseum. They owe $1.4 million by today in order to avoid defaulting on their payments with the city of Oakland. Let’s just say it’s rough times for such a well respected club. It isn’t all bad news in the USL though. Last weekend's match between Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Louisville City snagged 453,000 viewers on CBS. It was the second highest television viewership figure in league history. Is this a fluke or a sign of growth for the USL Championship? Next up, Everett, Washington has approved a multi-use stadium for a minor league baseball team and a potential USL expansion team. Do we really want our soccer teams to be sharing stadiums with baseball teams by design? World Cup Final, Oklahoma Soccer Brand Reveal, Good Stadium News + more
The World Cup closes this weekend so Morning Kickaround is here to get everyone ready for the Final and whatever the Bronze Medal Match is all about. Will Spain’s metronomic style choke out Argentina’s late game magic? Only time will tell, but Robert and Jason will do their best to predict what's going to happen. We then have a badge explainer for Oklahoma City’s return to the United Soccer League. How can the group known as OKC Soccer brand themselves in a unique way that pleases everyone? Let’s just say they fell a little bit short. Also, New Mexico United took one more step towards building their soccer specific stadium with a legal victory that will secure their preferred stadium site at Balloon Fiesta Park. USL Labor agreement, Investment In MLS Next Pro, TST 2026 + More

Save the Caps, "Backup League" Stadiums, LAFC Protests, and more

Soccer Stadium News, NYPD Says No, Because Football joins + More
Morning Kickaround may or may not be the cure for your case of the Mondays, but we're going to give it our best shot. We open in the plains of Iowa where we clank the clanger for a professional soccer stadium in Des Moines. The project entering the fun part of asking for public money and working with architects to develop what we really want: stadium renderings. Speaking of renderings, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds have some new ones from their renovations of Highmark Stadium. Also, New York City has more grim news for World Cup watch parties. NYPD and the Department of Transportation are no longer supporting street watch parties in the cities. We then weclome Andrew from Because Football onto the show. Andrew is travelling to all the World Cup host cities before the start of the tournament. We dig into what he's learned about them and what his motivation is for all this adventure.
