Piedmont Artist Profiles

PODCAST

Piedmont Artist Profiles

A weekly podcast with some of North Carolina's most influential, and obscure artists. From local bands to blacksmith's we will explore what makes these artists tick. What drives them to pursue their art? What influences brought them to this point? Where do they see themselves, and the NC art scene in the future? This personal show will bring out all that the area has to offer, as well as help cross-promote local artists. The goal is to help the scene grow into a vibrant community. The show's format will vary, but most will be an interview style show. Recorded either in our studio or theirs, we intend to paint a portrait of the artists through their own words.

Chuck Brine from Corn Dog Dyes

In this episode, we hear from musician, dancer, and tie-dye artist Chuck Brine. He's not like a paid dancer….but I've got a dope GIF of him dancing to Midnight Airwaves. Chuck has a great, friendly and open personality, and it was really fun to meet him. Chuck and his operation known as Corn Dog Dyes, offer a wide range of apparel, and accessories in handmade tie-dye patterns. You can check out some of his available work Here. And you can also find him all over the Piedmont at art festivals and markets selling his wares right off the rack. He's also one hell of a songwriter, as he delivers intimate songs that are slightly embellished biographical stories of his life. They draw you in and have you tapping your foot and nodding to the familiar stories.   Special thanks to the guys in Midnight Airwave for hosting us that weekend. Speaking of Midnight Airwaves, you can catch them, along with The Donned Deads, The Black Eyed Kids, and Cowboy Mutilators on October 28th. This is a house party, so we recommend you hit any of those bands up on Facebook, and I'm sure you'll get the hookup. Until next time…..

As diverse as it is appealing, you can't help but be sucked into one of their live shows. The guys….minus Tron….joined me in the basement to shoot the shit and talk about their many years as musicians and how special this project is to each of them. Groovin the Madness

I had planned to cover another festival, but was told about a week before the big day, that I wasn't needed….or too late….depends on which one of the disjointed emails you go off of. Either way, I move on. Groovin The Madness only blipped on my radar because the Good Night Brother's band were going. And I couldn't be more thrilled to have found it. I have a love hate thing going on with doing festivals. On one hand, they provide numerous opportunities to interact with bands and fans, and really do a good job for exposing the show to people. On the other hand, it's quite a bit of work mainly in the post weekend editing. But at the end of the day, I really liked how the Shakedown Fest episode came out, and I've been wanting to attempt another, and sort of verify some of my solutions to problems I faced in my first going. I'll probably write a blog about music festivals and lament a little about this later on. But for now, the madness must ensue. The Groovin the Madness festival was put together by the dudes in Midnight Airwaves, a Statesville based rock band and power trio. They started the festival to provide a place for some of these very young bands in the Hickory-Statesville scene to play. It seems as though, the venue deficit has stretched all the way up there, and there are some really talented bands that have nowhere to play. You mix that with an epidemic of opioid and amphetamine addiction, and you've got a recipe for lost talent….and that's what these dudes aim to stop. I traveled up to Statesville the week before the festival to talk to the guys about what their plans were, and get a feel for what I was in for. I caught up with them at their practice space to sit down for a conversation. I arrived at the split level home in the evening, and the sounds of the band practicing was flowing in the air. I walked around back and was escorted into the lair by the drummer's finance…more on that later…and walked in as they fine tuned one of their original songs. When the song wrapped up we went outside for a smoke, and to sort of feel each other out. They told me about a friend's son who had died recently like days before from an overdose and we talked about the drug problem in the area. Pressed pills of mainly fentanyl that were labeled as Percocet, coke cut with meth, and dirty heroin….all of which were causing visible and fatal damage to their community. I'm only going to take a second here, but the epidemic that we have now, is spawned 100% by the War on Drugs. If you legalize everything…and I mean everything…or at the very least decriminalize it, these bullshit stepped on drugs would be out of here. You want to talk about fiscal conservatism? Let market forces take care of it. People selling bullshit drugs, don't last. Everything becomes more clean and predictable. I am in no way condoning the use of hard narcotics, but people gonna do what they do. The data is out there, legalizing leads to a remarkable decline in overdose deaths and addiction. And that's real. Seemingly hand in hand with the drug problem is the problem of no venues. I shouldn't say no venues. Very limited venues, and none that are really doing anything outside of the box. The all too familiar theme of bookers wanting cover bands was also predominating. We talked about their musical tastes, and how they got started. I had the recorder going, so you can hear all of that in the episode to follow this article.   On the drive home I really digested this all. This is a group, much like mine growing up, in an area seemingly stuck in a cycle of unemployment and addiction. This is a familiar theme in any small town. But these guys, who aren't pious or on a lectern, who don't have any political aspirations, and I'm sure they could give zero fucks what anyone thought about them….they were the ones who were going to step up and help enforce change through music, love and acceptance, rather than a bully pulpit. And for me, personally, that's what's up. The forecast for the weekend slowly crept up in temp and humidity over the next week, until it reached the absolute highest temperature and humidity you can possibly reach. There should be a name for it, like absolute zero…..this was absolute hot AF. At least that's what it was in the city. Up north of I40 on Lookout Shoals, the general consensus was that it weren't to bad. A nice breeze, and if you were out of the sun, well…..who am I kidding. I am a special breed of human that will wear shorts and a hoody on a 40 degree day. If I keep the wind off me in the snow, that's about all I need. But man, you put me in anything over 75, and I'm sweating. But for the natives, this sort of weather seemed to impede them no more than a simple penny on the tracks would a locomotive. There was no stopping these folks' will to have a blast. I setup my pop up tent just to the side of stage left, fired up the generator, and made sure all was good, and set off to look around. The RNTP as I think it is quasi-officially called is a corporately owned campground that is about 30 acres of meadow on the banks of the lake. You drive down about a mile of dirt road, through towering rows of corn, to get to the paved driveway that leads down to the boat ramp and picnic shelter.    That shelter had been converted into a stage on one side, and a greenroom on the other. Front and center of the stage was a merry-go-round. Like a legit one. Like the one we all played on before they child proofed the playgrounds of this nation. Think about that…they child proofed the playgrounds. There was a guy there with a parrot, and several artists had their tents set up selling tie-dye shirts and blown glass. I walked back to the tent. Oh my god it was hot. I put up the sides to the tent and set up a fan. I figured I might as well smoke a bowl. Didn't seem like anyone was going to be bothered by that. In fact, I don't think anyone there was even botherable. One of my favorite things about festivals, even when I was a kid, it's always so laid back. Nobody is there to fuck you over, you don't really need to lock your shit….just always so warm. People from all walks, just in one place to have fun, and that's it. Maybe that's what would cure what ails us. As I'm writing this there are some Nazi terrorists in Charlottesville, and among the disgusting imagery and vulgarness of it all, I am overwhelmingly struck by one thing the most. What in the living fuck has their panties in a knot like this? How does any person dwell so much on another's differences that they actually get mad? Like mad at a person's existence and demand for equal rights.  Someone needs to get them a fuckin lollipop or something. I got off the leather seat I had brought with me, and walked down to the water. There was this great elevated pier to the side of the boat ramp. There were kids doing back flips off of it. Attempting really, few ever actually completed a flip. A 270 degree vertical rotation is not a flip, it is a belly flop. My buddy John showed up with the Kayaks, but you didn't come here to hear about my weekend camping. To hear the rest of this story, download the upcoming episode of Piedmont Artist Profiles, which will be up Thursday….8/15/17.  And stay tuned as we'll bring you interviews and music from the bands over the next week. Oh….and the drummer from Midnight Airwaves actually proposed to his girlfriend during their set, she said yes, and then I'm pretty sure she gave a Hell Yeah!   Shout outs: Corn Dog Dyes The Donner Dead Cattle Mutilators Nitrogen Tones Moose and Friends Duk Tan LeeD not Follow Opus (or whatever the end up being called) The Goodnight Brothers And of course Midnight Airwaves, the hosts and great dudes who made this all possible.

    Adayla

Emerging Artist: Adayla Submitted by Mick I first heard Adayla perform at a Studio 13 open mic in Cornelius. Her partner, Rico, played a soft melodic guitar while she belted out the words to her song Whiskey River. It was such a captivating performance it had everyone nearly silent when the song was over. I was struck by the message in the lyrics. And it a commonality in most of her songs that really leaves the listener feeling fulfilled. She not only sings songs of lament and struggle, but there is a simultaneous message of hope and possibility. For every word of darkness in a verse, there is a rebutting message of light in the chorus. Her voice is just as powerful as her lyrics. Classically trained at a young age, Adayla spent time travelling the globe with the Charlotte's Children's Choir. She is a very articulate singer which she attributes to her learning to perform songs in Japanese, French, as well as an African dialect.  And on top of all of that, she is a sweet and engaging person.   Adayla shares a Charlotte home with her partners Rico and Chris, as well as their son Emillio…who is an enthusiastic young man who took time to introduce me to all of the family dogs. In a converted room in the house they have created a space to create and share their love and their art. They have what I called an Art Mafia. Not only do you have Adayla singing and Rico playing guitar, but Rico is an amazing creative who does these amazing illustrations using spray paint, and to round out the trifecta Chris is an accomplished photographer in her own right. You can find them peddling their wares at art festivals and events all over the greater Charlotte area.   Staying constantly busy Adayla is currently working on an EP for, hopefully, a fall release. And on top of that she's taping two music videos in the coming weeks, and she is fresh off a performance on the Tiny Stage Concert YouTube series. Tiny Stage is the product of local singer songwriter Louis Beeler.   Louis brings artists from the Charlotte area into his home, where he has, as the name implies, a tiny stage. I haven't actually see it…but someday I shall make it to a taping. Anyway, Louis is a man on a similar mission as me, and that is the spreading local music as it should be. So definitely check out his YouTube channel here, and you can also find Tiny Stage on Facebook         You can follow Adayla on FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM as well as her website here And you can also check out Rico Nye's work here

    Songwriter's Circle

This is the first of what will eventually become a regular series here on Piedmont Artist Profiles that I am calling Songwriter's Circle. For each episode in the series I will sit down with two or more local songwriter's and talk about the art, craft, and industry of songwriting. I hope that these shows will help raise the awareness of the craft, and help our local artists raise their profile, and get the recognition they deserve.  This first episode includes one of my buddies, Mr. Don Eidman. And I also got to finally meet Mitch Hayes.   Mitch is a Carolina born and bred songwriter whose original pieces pull from Americana, Country, and blues. He has a very centrist way of writing about social issues that I find refreshing in this time of extremes. You can catch Mitch this weekend for two shows. He'll be performing at the Galway Hooker in Cornelius Friday August 4th at 10:00pm, and on Saturday August 5th you can find him in Pilot Mountain at The Living Room at 8:00 pm. Be sure to check him out on facebook and go to his website MitchHayesMusic.com for updates and downloads.  Don is a So-Fo (Social Folk Music) writer and performer who is originally from Baltimore, but alas he ended up here in North Carolina. He writes songs on the whole spectrum of social injustice and does it in such an authentic and coherent way it makes me feel like I'm in Berkley 1969. Don can be found at a handful of open mics around the area every week; Summit Coffee in Davidson, Wired Coffee Express in Kannapolis, and Lil Roberts in Concord to name a few. You can also listen to some of his songs at Don Eidman.com Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast covering local artists, musicians hailing from the greater Charlotte Metropolitan Area. Gonzo/Respect Da Mic/ Studio 13

In this episode, I take things in yet another direction. Instead of focusing on just one artist or event, I am trying to be able to do more of a weekly magazine type show, highlighting whatever it is that I ended up doing that week. As this idea grows, I hope to get a few more people on board to act as "correspondents" and maybe even putting out a Tuesday and a Thursday show….That may be a little ambitious, but we shall see. I will still be doing the more in depth sit down type interviews, but those will be more like one every 5-6 weeks or so.   In this episode we talk to the Respect Da Mic poetry slam team as they head out to the Southern Fried Poetry Slam.   I got a chance to go hang out with Gonzo, and only about 15 minutes of it was fit for public consumption.   And last but not least, we here some good tunes from the most recent edition of the open mic at Studio13.  Including tracks from children's songwriter Dave Crowe, local artists Adayla Turner and Rico Nye perform a song,  and Junco Partner take us out with a bang.   Thank you for checking us out, please subscribe…blah, blah blah….One Love!   *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. Shakedown Festival 2017

Shake down festival 2017…. I only had a few days to get ready for this and come up with a plan. Let me first say that Fred and his team did a great job organizing the event and setting up the bands. So….This is a new format for a show, and I really like how it turned out….so I hope to bring a few more of these to you before the season is over. I mean….I'm chilling under an easy-up talking to people while great music is happening behind me all weekend. I had the hammock up……anyway, I'll put in the show notes where each interview begins so you can fast forward to hear them, but I think you'll enjoy the way I've strung them together. Shoney Lamar from The Lady Comes First 4:50   First up was half of the duo The Lady Comes First. Unfortunately Adrienne was sick, so Shoney Lamar went on for a scrabbled together solo set of originals and covers. Shoney's body of work is really incredible in its own right, but as a duo TLCF is just such a powerful performance to watch. Their unlikely harmonies and the journeys they both take musically and vocally leaves me wanting more every time. So if you haven't checked them out, for sure go check out their website for some eye opening genre splitting stuff. I got to catch up with shoney for my first interview of the day.....   Lovely Budz 15:55 The Lovely Budz are a local reggae/dub band, that I would compare, at least to me, they are cut from a similar cloth as such national acts as The Expendables and The Dirty Heads....but there is something more there. As such a young band, I am really looking forward to where these guys go on this journey. The rythms laid down by drummer Kody Farris and Bassist Clifton Bundick are complemented by the spot on vocals and guitar of lead singer Tyler Vickery. They have a catalog of several originals, which they played, and they wend on to do a pretty unique rendition of Bad Fish that, for this cat who saw sublime live..... was better than sublime played it. sacrilegious I know, but I'm a huge sublime fan.......they just weren't that great live. Sorry..... But these cats are spot on with their timing and instrumentation. Not just with that one cover, but with all of their songs. They swing by the tent, for what I hope is only the first of many conversations.   Matt Minchew and Heavy Water 23:30 Matt Minchew is a country artist, who you can just tell, has lots of stories to tell, but he's to humble to tell them unsolicited. But where he tells them is in song. I'm not a big country fan, but when he went on stage with his band, Heavy Water, I couldn't stop listening. His song writing skills are highlighted by the tight sound he and his band put on. I got a chance to sit down with Ben for a little bit....have a listen.     Lisa De Novo 27:15 Lisa De Novo is a woman who's exudes "girl-power." Her lively and straight forward personality shine through in her music and art, and she really draws you in with the catchyness of her music. But while I'd shy away from calling it pop, it definitely has a familiar and easy listening angle to it. She lists her influences as being such powerful female artists as Mariah Carey, Joss Stone, and Fiona Apple. I was struck with how honest she is as I got to talk to her. And I hope to be able to do a more in depth conversation down the road.....   Frankie Gene Courtney 30:50 Frankie Gene Courtney is a Concord boy, who's song writing ability has taken him to Nashville, where he is now honing his craft full time. He's got a laid back, kid next door vibe to him, that makes him very approachable. He went on stage to perform a solo act, playing several song from his upcoming lp. He discussed his song writing process with me, and we talked about what's coming up next for this talented young man. Have a listen.    HL from The Kodiak Brotherhood 36:38 The Kodiak Brotherhood is a local alternative country band that is made up of dudes who play in all sorts of other projects. Lead by Guitarist and Singer HL Ruth these guys are at the prefect crossroads where country, blues, and rock converge. I did a really quick interview with HL....and I'm not sure why. I was kinda tired and had been in the sun I guess. But I owe it to those guys to do a real show on them, because all of those guys have been in other pretty well known bands from the area, and I'm sure they have some great opinioins and stories about the Charotte Music Scene   Grade-A-Grooves 39:52 Grade A Grooves...........I really had no idea what to expect from these guys, and I gotta say.....I was impressed. Uncle Tree introduced himself backstage as I was talking to the Lovely Budz. Then there is the kilted bass player known as Fro Man. And.....I'm not being an agist....but an older dude on drums named Bam Bam. These guys are just getting started folks, and watch out for them. Uncle Trees passion for his song writing mixed with Fro's showmanship, blended down with the drumming of Bam Bam....who joined the band in the most amazingly 21st century way, makes for an eclectic mixture of grooves and party music that it is impossible not to smile while watching.   Gonzo 48:10 Gonzo........where do I start with them. Gonzo is everything I wanted to have in my own rock and roll band when I was a kid. It's like......it's like what all the cool kids are doing. These guys mix funk, punk, groove.....whatever it is...it's great. And the show is just so wild and reminiscent of when corporate shills hadn't yet embedded themselves down into the gut of rock and roll. I'd make an Infectious Grooves reference, but I don't think anyone remembers them. But....yeah.....I really wasn't equipped to interview the 27 people they brought with, complete with cameraman, a pit bull, and a dude swinging some sort of ninja appearing device. But I loved every minute of this conversation. I wish I'd left the mic's on after, but it's probably a good thing I didn't...So sorry about the background, but this is worth the listen.   Randi from Indighost 55:56 Unfortunately, i was unable to watch Indighost's set. But as you could hear in the last two interviews, they absolutely killed it. Indighost is a died in the wool alternative psychedelic rock band. As pure as it gets, and as talented as it gets. Listening to them puts me back at a Sonic Youth show in Portland circa 1994. The rawness, and clearness of singer Randi's lyrics swim in a sea of fuzzy melodies thick with rock and blues. Most of the band had to pack up and get out of there, but I did get to sit down with Randi for a couple of minutes to talk about what they have going on.   Fred Heints from Late Night Special 1:04.00 Fred Heintz is not only the lead singer of Late Night Special, he's also the founder of Shakedown Festival. And unfortunately, like Indighost, I wasn't able to check out the performance. But.....I could hear it. Late Night Special has a very smooth and easily digested sound. Folk lyrics and a pop rock sound highlight this band and their catchy tunes. LNS is currently working on finishing up an album, so they have been super busy travelling back and forth from Nashville. And on top of that Fred, along with several dedicated volunteers organized a great festival. Fred swung by at the end of the night for a conversation that had me wanting to get to know him better. He's a humble and gracious man. So, for the last interview of the show, have a listen to Mr. Fred Heintz  *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. The Lady Comes First

What's up everybody. This weeks episode is with the amazing duo The Lady Comes First.  Where do I even begin..... The lady Comes First is comprised of Adrian Emberley and Shoney Lamar, both veterans in their own right. But when they joined forces....Magic happened.  I was first struck by the rawness and pure passion of their music at an open mic a couple of weeks ago at Wired Coffee Express in Kannapolis. But I'll let the interview speak for itself.  On a side note, this is the first episode back in the studio in a while. I love being mobile and interviewing people all over, but there is something about Snow Peak Studios that I just love. I hope to bring you more of everything, but these studio episodes are special to me.  Be sure to follow them on Facebook, and go download their album from their website theladycomesfirst.com.   Oh, and like us to. We're on all the normal platforms. And spread the word. Send me artists you'd like to hear on the show. if you're an artist who would like to come on the show, send me some info to [email protected]   Jah Bless   _Mick_   *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. One Mic Stand

This episode is my first attempt at recording an open mic. It is a step in the evolution of this show. And...it has some pitfalls. The audio quality is simply not up to par. I did my best to clean it up some. But it is still just OK at best.    But the performances captured are amazing, and I hope you will enjoy them.  I will try to tag everyone in the Facebook post, but I have listed them below in order of appearance. There are a few artists that I just wasn't able to clean the audio up well enough to put in the mix. And I apologize to anyone who didn't make it on the show. I promise it was just a matter of the audio being too poor.  Shane Manier, Mathew Church and Daniel Arthur Gurley, Mike G Nolan, Elaine Hill, Matthew Byrd, Don Eidman, The Lady Come First, and the closer...Al Lemmond.    *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. Aquill Nicholson

Hey everyone. Short show notes, because, well....somebody spent too much time scouting artists, and not enough time editing a show this week. My bad.  In this weeks episode I speak with Guerilla Poet member Aquill Nicholson. We sat down in Kannapolis at Wired Coffee Express, and really had a pretty good conversation.  Had a technical glitch towards the end....my battery pack died, or at least shut off for some reason. But we didn't lose too much.  So, check Aquill out on FB, Twitter, and Instagram under the name @AquillAnswers And go check out our friends at Wired Coffee Express. They have quite a few cool open mic shows throught the month, and on Sunday...tomorrow...April 2nd, they will be hosting a show by a really great band out of California called the 77's.     *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. Matthew Church

This episode's guest is Matthew Church. Matthew is a solo artist, singer in a metal band, and a professional wrestler.   This was the first time that I've done an interview completely out of my element. Not only was I recording out of studio for the first time, but I was also using my mobile recording setup for the first time. And on top of that.....I'd never met Matthew in person.   Matt comes across as a super confident, and positive guy, which seems to be exactly who he is. He's been a performance artist for most of his life, and he exudes that personality. Basically he's the kind of guy I'd bring home to mom, if I was a guy who brought guys home to mom. Just seeing if you guys were reading the notes.   I've put some dates and links below to check out.   Please comment, and let me know how I'm doing. I know people are listening, but I'm not sure how I'm doing. My insecurities exude from me, like the sweat of a boar on the Serengeti. I have also used the word "exudes" twice in a post. Well, three times really.   So this concludes the writing portion of this exercise.   Thanks again,   _Mick_   Dates: 3/23    One Mic Stand @ Wired Coffee Express, Kannapolis, NC 4/03    Performing @ Sunshine's, Kannapolis, NC   4/29    With Key of Betrayal @ Somewhere Else Tavern, Greensboro, NC   Links: Matthew Church Key Of Betrayl WiredCoffeeEspress Facebook Page   *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. Daniel Arthur Gurley

In this episode of Piedmont Artist Profiles I got to sit down with Daniel Arthur Gurley and talk shop with him a little bit. I had some hardware issues that really made this a bit of a mixup. I had to really clip down the episode to make it audible.   Daniel is a harmonica and guitar player, as well as a songwriter and all around good dude. Check him out at the dates below.   Please like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And please leave feedback. I need that more than anything else right now.   Be good to each other     _Mick_ Dates for Daniel Arthur Gurley 3/9 The Listening Room @ Davis Theatre in Concord, NC 3/11 Gala @ The Center for Faith and Arts in Salisbury, NC 3/25 Big Elm and Encore @ The Last Word in Charlotte, NC *Piedmont Artist Profiles is a Concord, North Carolina based podcast that covers local artists and musicians. Shane Manier from Guerilla Poets

Piedmont Artist Profiles  Episode 1 Shane Manier from Guerilla Poets Let me start but thanking you for taking the time to listen to this podcast. I hope that you find these episodes interesting and insightful.  I've been listening to talk radio as long as I can remember. We are basically still under construction. Everything is covered in dust, and the sheet-rockers are still here. But I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk to my guest.   I've been lurking for awhile at local open mics and shows, trying to find artists that I thought would be interesting to interview. And I found many of them. The next step was to get the cajones to ask artists to come over to a stranger's basement and sit down for4 an interview. And this all went down by chance.   This weeks guest is Shane Manier from Guerilla Poets, a community outreach group wrapped in artistic expression. They host art programs for troubled youth, go and perform in assisted living communities, and of course, they hold open mic shows all over the greater Charlotte area.   I met Shane and Daniel Arthur Gurlrey….my next guest on the show… on the deck of the Oak Street Mill in Cornelius, during an open mic they were hosting. And they both loved my idea, and...well….they came over.   Please enjoy this first episode. We will grow this to be bigger and better as we move along. I will not be uploading to the main distributors until I have a couple more episodes. So for now you can check us out on Facebook and Twitter, and look for links there for our Libsyn RSS feed. We will have a blog up soon, and probably a website to follow.   You can find Guerilla Poets on Facebook   And be sure to like and share on our page. ABOUT THIS SHOW
