Why Elon Musk Is Wrong About Mars - Interview with space expert Dr Niamh Shaw
Dr. Niamh Shaw is an engineer, scientist and storyteller who has spent more than a decade chasing an extraordinary dream: to become a citizen astronaut.Along the way, she's spoken at NASA's Johnson Space Center, covered launches from Kennedy Space Center, trained for space, lived on a simulated Mars mission and experienced zero gravity aboard the infamous "Vomit Comet".We talk about whether humans should ever colonise Mars, why she believes Elon Musk's vision for humanity's future is fundamentally flawed, whether space tourism is closer than we think, the search for aliens, and why astronauts believe we need poets, priests and philosophers in space just as much as engineers. It's a conversation that starts with rockets, but ends up being about something much bigger: perspective, possibility and what it means to be human. You can buy Dr Niamh's book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dream-Big-Irishwomans-Space-Odyssey/dp/1781177155Follow Dr Niamh on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_niamh_shawFollow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richleighpod=====Interviews that might just change your life. The Queen of Kids' TV: What Jim Henson Taught Me About Changing The World
My guest this week is BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award-winning writer and producer Jocelyn Stevenson, whose extraordinary career includes Sesame Street, The Magic School Bus, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and creating Fraggle Rock alongside Jim Henson. We talk about the lessons Jim Henson taught her, why he believed children's television could help stop war, the responsibility of creating stories for young minds, and what she thinks about growing up in a world of smartphones, social media and endless screen time.We also discuss curiosity, science, why children are far more capable than we often give them credit for, and why Jocelyn chose to reinvent herself as a children's author after decades in television, with her fantastic series The Waterubas. This is a conversation about the power of stories, the importance of kindness, and the people shaping the next generation.== Note - apologies for the technical issues with the camera in this episode if you're watching it. Ready For the Next Episode - Solo episode 03
Fair warning: this is a solo episode. If the thought of me talking for getting on for 40 minutes with only a loose structure makes you want to jump headfirst into fire, flick back through the other 80+ episodes for one you haven't watched or listened to, or come back on Monday, when I'll have another incredible guest.Since September last year, when I brought this podcast back, I've been healing out loud, somewhat. This podcast has become a real-time document of the aftermath of tragic grief, and this idiot's effort to make sense of - well, everything - while wanting desperately to spread positivity and the idea of possibility. This episode is a quieter mediation on just that. No milestone to speak of, no guest, just an honest update on where I am, what Project Possible is becoming, and what it feels like to start again without starting from scratch. In this episode, I talk about rebuilding, how hope can feel uncomfortable, the idea of “New Game+”, and why I’m starting to look up again after - amidst? - the hardest period of my life.I also talk about what the podcast has given me, the opportunities beginning to appear, and why Project Possible feels like the thing everything else might grow from.I think I'm ready for the next episode.Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richleighpod =====Interviews that might just change your life. Set on the gritty streets of Manchester, APNAS follows a British Asian Mancunian pulled into a dangerous criminal world by his notorious uncle - and a brutal rivalry with his cousin pushes everything to breaking pointI sit down with Ashley Chin and Darren RL Gordon, the co-directors of Apnas - a movie that launched with HUGE hype, with millions of people talking about it before it was even released in cinemas last month. We talked about their careers, and I asked: how is it possible to make and market a successful independent film from scratch? This is a proper behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to get a film made - from a simple idea and a conversation, to building a team, self-funding the project, and pushing it all the way to a UK-wide cinema release. But this goes beyond filmmaking. We get into why Apnas had to be made, what it means to tell stories that aren’t being told, and the importance of representation, identity and community. We talk about:how Apnas came together from the ground upthe challenges of funding and making an indie filmworking with first-time actors and building authenticitythe pressure of bringing a story like this to lifeand what it really takes to turn an idea into something realThis is a conversation about creativity, persistence, and making something happen when there isn’t a clear path.If you enjoy this conversation, please subscribe wherever you watched or listened.=====Interviews that might just change your life. “I was on fire, trapped in a burning tank… and nearly stayed” - Karl Hinett
I was lucky enough to sit down with adventurer, long-distance athlete and all-round inspiration Karl Hinett. At 18 years old, Karl was deployed to Basra as an infantryman. During a riot, his tank was attacked with petrol bombs. Trapped inside, he was engulfed in flames. He describes it as feeling like he was underwater, in fire.Karl suffered burns to 37% of his body and was given a 20% chance of survival. What followed was years of surgeries, chronic pain, and a complete loss of identity. He went from having his life mapped out in the military, to not knowing who he was anymore. We talk about that moment inside the tank, the split-second decision to escape, and the point where he admits he considered not getting out at all.We also get into the aftermath. The isolation, the drinking, the thoughts of not wanting to be here anymore - and how his nan helped pull him back.Since then, Karl has rebuilt his life in extraordinary ways. Over 100 marathons, an Invictus Games silver medal, and a mindset that’s been forged through something most of us can’t even imagine. This is a conversation about survival, identity, and what it really takes to rebuild when everything is taken from you.Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richleighpodFollow Karl on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karl.hinett=====Interviews that might just change your life. Professor Tim Spector is one of the most cited scientists in the world and a leading expert in gut health, nutrition, and the microbiome. In this conversation, we break down why much of what we’ve been told about food is wrong - from calories and dieting, to why two people can eat the same meal and have completely different biological responses. We talk about the connection between the gut and the brain, how your mood and energy might be more shaped by what you eat than we've ever been taught, and why habits like flossing could even have an enormous impact on your risk of dementia.Tim also explains how modern food systems are designed to keep us hooked, why willpower isn’t the issue, and what simple changes can actually make a difference. This is a conversation about how your body really works - and what you can do about it.Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richleighpodFollow Professor Tim: https://www.instagram.com/tim.spector=====Interviews that might just change your life. "The Food Industry is Following Big Tobacco's Playbook" - Jonathan Wolf, CEO of ZOE
Jonathan Wolf is the co-founder and CEO of ZOE, a company using large-scale science to understand how food affects our health and the trillions of microbes living in our gut.In this conversation, Jonathan explains the emerging science of the microbiome, why two people can eat the same food and have completely different responses, and why ultra-processed foods may be driving the modern health crisis. He also argues that some major food companies have followed a playbook similar to the tobacco industry in shaping public understanding of nutrition - lying to us and the government for their own financial gain. Before building ZOE with scientist Professor Tim Spector, Jonathan worked at the ad-tech company Criteo, helping to scale the business from a startup into a NASDAQ-listed company with more than $1 billion in revenue.=====Interviews that might just change your life. How to Be Truly Kind - The AI-Proof Skill That Sets You Apart
If you want to be a better leader, partner, parent, or just a better human being, this episode is for you.In this episode of Project Possible, I’m joined by the Queen of Kindness (OK, I might have dubbed her that...!), Nahla Summers. Nahla is a speaker, author, adventurer, and someone whose life was completely reshaped by grief. After the sudden death of her partner, Paul, everything changed. What followed wasn’t just recovery. It became a mission in spreading the power of kindness, and how it can help us in both our personal and professional lives.Since then, she's:– Climbed Kilimanjaro– Walked 500 miles across the UK– Cycled 3,000 miles across America– And even set a Guinness World Record spelling “kindness” across EnglandBut this conversation isn’t really about the miles. It’s about what kindness actually means - because it’s not the same as being nice.We talk about:– The difference between kindness and people-pleasing– Why real kindness sometimes involves difficult conversations– How emotional intelligence changes teams and leadership– Why human connection matters more than money or status– How to build empathy, even if you didn’t grow up seeing it– And the voice in your head - the one that can either drag you down or pull you forwardWe also talk honestly about grief. What if the biggest role for robots and AI isn’t replacing jobs, but replacing loneliness? In this episode, I’m joined by Andrew Kiguel, CEO of Realbotix, the company building what might be the most realistic humanoid robots in the world.Andrew explains why Realbotix isn’t focused on robots that walk, cook, or do backflips, but on something far more human: connection, companionship, and emotional wellbeing. We explore:- Why companionship may be the biggest market in AI- Whether AI relationships can be “real”- The ethics of human-like robots and emotional attachment- Loneliness, mental health, and ageing populations- Why ultra-realistic design matters more than raw intelligence- The difference between assistive technology and replacement- Where the line is between innovation, discomfort, and progressAndrew also shares his journey from investment banking and Bitcoin mining to humanoid robotics, and why he believes we’re still years away from a true Westworld, but much closer than people think to robots becoming part of everyday life. This is not a conversation about sci-fi fantasies. It’s about what it really means to be human in an age of intelligent machines.=====Interviews that might just change your life. Journalist, radio host and TV presenter Mary Mandefield joins me to unpack one of the most controversial developments in modern dating: the rise of online groups like 'Are We Dating The Same Guy?', and the growing tension between protection, exposure, and unintended harm.Mary shares what she uncovered while making the Channel 4 documentary 'Red Flags: Are We Dating the Same Guy?', including stories from women who found validation and safety through these communities, and men whose lives were deeply affected after being posted online. We talk about:- Why so many women feel forced to protect each other online- The emotional and psychological cost of being publicly accused- Whether these groups are community support or digital vigilantism- Why trust in dating apps and the police has broken down- How empathy for women’s lived experiences can coexist with concern for innocent men- And what dating might look like in a future shaped by AI, algorithms and isolationThis is not a conversation about taking sides. It’s about sitting with discomfort, holding two truths at once, and asking difficult but necessary questions:What do we do now? And is it possible to date happily, healthily and safely in 2026?Follow Mary on Instagram here.=====Interviews that might just change your life. And if not…? “Only 22 Caps”: Trevor Woodman on Belonging, Sacrifice and Winning a World Cup
Trevor Woodman is a Rugby World Cup winner. One of only 30 Englishmen to win and lift the Webb Ellis Cup.And yet, if you walked into his house, you wouldn’t know it - he never framed a shirt, and doesn't have anything out that highlights his incredible achievements. In this wide-ranging and deeply reflective conversation, Trevor opens up about growing up in Cornwall, breaking into professional rugby, feeling like an outsider at Gloucester at first, and the physical toll that ultimately ended his career. We talk honestly about injuries, ambition, regret, and why chasing “the next thing” can quietly rob you of contentment. Trevor shares why he still describes himself as having “only 22 caps”, why he never did frame an England shirt, and what he learned from watching others chase what they didn’t have. This is a conversation about reaching the pinnacle of elite sport, yes, but more than that it’s about identity, perspective, and learning when enough really is enough.A thoughtful, grounded episode with one of rugby’s most quietly impressive figures.=====Interviews that might just change your life. Moving Slowly Is Still Moving: a 50th episode special and Q&A
This is my second solo episode.Fifty episodes into the podcast feels like a good moment to pause and reflect. In this, I talk honestly about where I’m at right now — with the podcast, with life, with grief, with ambition, and with the idea of progress when life doesn’t go in a straight line.I share what I’ve learned from the first 50 episodes, how my interview style has changed, why fame isn’t the goal, and some of the most surprising lessons my guests have taught me along the way.I also talk openly about health, guilt, loss, and the painful tension between gratitude and sadness. This episode finishes with a listener Q&A and a reminder I probably needed to hear myself:Moving slowly is still moving.Thank you for being here.=====Interviews that might just change your life. The man who believed he could FLY: Richard Browning of Gravity Industries
In this episode, I sit down with Richard Browning.Richard is the founder of Gravity Industries, former Royal Marines reservist, entrepreneur and known to millions as the real-life Iron Man!Richard and I first worked together back in 2017 when Gravity launched to the world, and since then he’s flown jet suits across 50+ countries, worked with elite military and medical teams, built a global business worth $100 million and learned a huge amount about risk, innovation and resilience along the way.But this isn’t just a conversation about technology or flight. We talk about grief, loss and the moments that shape who we become. We talk about the huge gaps in education when it comes to innovation and entrepreneurship, and what could be done about it.Richard opens up about the impact of losing his 'wonderful, creative, maverick inventor' father to suicide as a teenager. He talks about how that experience fuelled his drive to build and to push boundaries, and why resilience matters more than ever - not just in entrepreneurship, but in life.We get into:• why he set out to build a jet suit with no business plan• the hidden reality of risk, failure and experimentation• military and medic use-cases that save time - and lives• how grief changed his outlook on fear and challenge• the role of resilience in innovation and society• what flying actually feels like… and why he doesn’t dream of it anymoreThis is a conversation about possibility, courage and what happens when we decide not to be defined by the hardest moments in our lives.=====Interviews that might just change your life. Sikisa: "Comedy's probably saved me"
In this episode I sit down with stand-up comedian and immigration lawyer Sikisa.Sikisa was once told she was “slightly funny”. She took that compliment (?) and has since gone on to become one of the hardest-working and most in-demand acts on the stand-up circuit.Since winning the public vote in the 2017 BBC New Comedy Award, she's starred on Live at the Apollo, Comedy Central Live and many other TV shows, and performed on stages up and down the country - while juggling her day job as an immigration lawyer, and other pursuits including co-hosting the Wrestle Club UK podcast, compering and performing burlesque. Her Fringe show Serving Justice saw her shortlisted for a prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award, and she's just released a brilliant special on YouTube, Life of the Party. We talk about what it’s like to split a life between demanding worlds: handling complex, emotional immigration cases in the day, then stepping on stage at night with confidence, humour and attitude. She speaks openly about graft, sacrifice, doubt and identity, and why she keeps pushing even when the cost feels real.Funny, honest and full of heart. A conversation about work ethic, possibility and backing yourself.Find out more about Sikisa from the links on her (packed) Linktree.=====Interviews that might just change your life. And if not…? "Just Watch Me” - Jeremy Lynch on rejection and being relentless
I sit down with Jeremy Lynch to talk about discipline, failure, rejection, consistency, and what it takes to get back up again when you fall down.Jeremy reflects on being just 20 years old on Britain’s Got Talent, overreaching on the biggest stage of his life, and experiencing a very public failure - and why finishing the performance mattered more than winning. We talk about his mindset, his work ethic, and his long-term approach to growth. We get into why motivation is overrated, why systems and focus matter more than feelings, and why most people quit just before things start working. Jeremy shares how he taught himself skills without formal lessons, why learning by doing has been central to his success, and how consistency compounds over years - not months. We also talk honestly about money, happiness, fatherhood, impostor syndrome, collaboration over competition, and the pressure creators put on themselves to “make it” quickly. This is a conversation about doing the work, staying curious, and committing to the long game - even when no one’s watching.Jeremy has launched a new 'focus-first' supplement brand called HP-1. We talk about the story of creating the company, benefits and more in this conversation. Find out more at: https://hp-1.com=====Interviews that might just change your life. And if not…? Is Western Civilisation doomed? - Dr Luke Kemp
In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Luke Kemp, an existential risk researcher at Cambridge University and the author of Goliath's Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse.Luke spends his life thinking about how societies rise, why they fall, and what really puts our future at risk. What surprised me most is how hopeful this conversation turned out to be.Luke argues that history is best understood as a story of organised crime. From early civilisations to modern governments, tech giants and today’s global system, he shows how the same patterns keep repeating: power, control and inequality. Together, we talk about:- How and why early civilisations formed- Why data might be the most dangerous resource we have today - and how AI might impact civilisation- The modern versions of grain, weapons and geography- How close the world has come to nuclear disaster - and the people who quietly stopped it- Whether global collapse is actually likely - and what we can do about it- Why studying worst-case scenarios can sometimes make you more optimistic, not lessThis is a wide-ranging conversation about power, history, human nature and possibility. If you’ve ever wondered where we’re heading - or how we might build something better - I think you’ll really enjoy this one.=====Interviews that might just change your life. They said 'get a real job'. I said no! - Tweedy the Clown
Tweedy the Clown is one of the UK's most beloved performers. He's entertained millions around the world over decades, from village circus big tops to Madison Square Garden.I was lucky enough to have a couple of hours with him, recording in what I later found out to be the late, great Nell Giffords' caravan - Nell co-founded Giffords Circus in 2000.In this funny and surprisingly philosophical conversation, Tweedy takes us from being a tiny teenager who worried he might only be funny because of his size to perhaps the most famous working clown in the country. We talk about the art of clowning, the day his hair caught fire on stage - and how that shaped his signature look, how the media made monsters of clowns, how chaos becomes craft, and why the best clowns are really just adults who refuse to let go of their childlike wonder. This is a joyful deep-dive into creativity, resilience, silliness, and the beautiful craft of making people laugh.I bet you've never met anybody quite like Tweedy before. I know I hadn't, and I'm honoured to have been able to.=====Interviews that might just change your life. And if not…? Tom Stroud: The truth behind Netflix's Love Is Blind, masculinity, dating - and learning to forgive
Tom Stroud became one of the breakout personalities on the smash hit Netflix show Love Is Blind UK - but his most powerful story started well before the cameras rolled. In this episode, Tom opens up about:- Growing up with an absent father and how it fuelled anger, rebellion and a lifelong pattern of emotional avoidance- The moment his dad walked out – and why that became a defining event- Why he now believes what he felt on Love Is Blind wasn’t love, but intense infatuation shaped by unmet childhood needs- The reality of being trapped in a high-pressure filming environment with no phone, no escape – and why so many men struggle with vulnerability in those settings- How shame can keep men stuck for decades, and the moment he chose to forgive his father shortly before he died- The power and complexity of male friendships - including the breakdown and repair of his relationship with co-star Benaiah- What he’s learned about masculinity and boundaries- Why avoidance might keep you safe, but never fulfilledTom’s story isn't just about reality TV. It’s about identity, fatherhood, healing, and what it really takes to understand who you are.Honest, introspective and hopeful - this is the kind of conversation that makes you think about the person you are, the one you’ve been, and the one you still have time to become.=====We all want to be happy, healthy and fulfilled. The question is: how?Project Possible, hosted by me, Rich Leigh, explores this question with incredible guests from the world of business, sport, entertainment, health and psychology.Between the second and third series, I made the decision to go full-time on this show.I sold my successful 10 year old PR agency after my youngest brother Jordan took his own life. Are we just pretending to care about men's mental health? - George of TheTinMen
From awareness campaigns to social media hashtags - are we really making progress when it comes to the very real problem of men struggling with their mental health, or are we just making the right noises? In this honest and challenging conversation, I speak with George from The Tin Men - a creator who’s shaking up the way we talk about men’s health, suicide, and loneliness.George doesn’t want a gender war. He wants the truth - and in this episode, we talk about everything from domestic abuse against men, how boys and men are behind at every stage of education, loneliness, purpose and why so many men feel unseen. It’s uncomfortable at times, but necessary. If we’re serious about saving lives and making life better for everybody, I believe we have to start by being honest. Listening saves lives. How can we be better at it?
Kicking off Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I sat down with a director from Samaritans to better understand what the charity is and does, and talk about how we can all do a better job of looking after ourselves - and each other.Amanda has spent over a decade volunteering with Samaritans, the charity that answers a call for help every 10 seconds.Founded 70 years ago by a vicar with a single phone, Samaritans has grown into a 24/7 lifeline for anyone who needs to talk, with more than 20,000 volunteers in the UK.In this conversation, we talk about how we can be better listeners for friends, family and strangers. We get into what really happens when you call the helpline - 116 123, how volunteers protect their own mental health, why listening can save lives, and the power of simply asking, “Are you OK?”We also explore loneliness, talk about men’s mental health and suicide, the future of Samaritans, and what hope and possibility look like when life feels impossible.=====We all want to be happy, healthy and fulfilled.
