The Secret Tool for Healthy Pregnancy & Birth

There is so much data on the benefits of doula support in labor.  It truly is powerful .   However, even families who hire doulas miss out on the holistic long term benefits of doula support for the first, second, third and fourth trimester.    Navigating pregnancy and postpartum in our current system with only prenatal care is a major factor in increased birth risks.     It's disheartening as a doula to witness clients undermine their goals during pregnancy and postpartum. Registering for products that are harmful for infant development Agreeing to cervical exams that are unnecessary and risky Lifestyle choices that increase risk of serious complicaitons Introducing practices that undermine their breastfeeding goals The truth is pregnancy, birth and postpartum are a bit of a wild card---but not as much as we've been led to believe.  There are specific reasons women don't meet breastfeeding goals, why more and more women experience hypertension and gestational diabetes, reasons why they have precipitous labors.  So many of these reason can be avoided with support of an expert.   Your wonderful OB or midwife doesn't fill this role, their job is limited in it's scope.  Like most professions, it's hard for providers to stay up-to-date on the peripheral research in their field.   That's where I come in - I am a professional member of Evidence Based Birth with the latest data on Vitamin K, water birth, and so much more. I've also invested my time and money to have helpful information on complicated lactation, oral tethers, reflux, fertility nutrition, pregnancy nutrition and. hormonal health.      Click here for the Supplements mentioned in the podcast, use code SHAREYL to get 10% off your first order.  Set up a monthly order and save 24% on each order.     The biggest problem is that women, mothers, dads, grandparents, friend and family do not know what the evidence shows is the safest, so we jsut assume that "more technology" equal better results.  If you want to avoid this mistake: learn the evidence with me as your Digital Doula   If you live in the East Valley of Phoenix and are looking for a Newborn Care Specialist or Night Nanny, work with me: East Valley NCS     If you are expecting, join me in Sage Mama Maternity.  Blending evidence and intuition is the key to experiencing a postitive pregnancy, birth and postpartum. The Myth of Obstetric Care

This is the primary mistake that I see expecting families make when seeking care and support for pregnancy and birth.  You can avoid this mistake when you understand what Evidence Based Care looks like, and as a result you'll improve your chances of personalized, safe care for you and baby.    Obstetric Care has practiced on women in the US for around 200 years and in that time we have learned that practicing X-Rays on pregnant women is not safe Prescribing Thalidomide caused birth defects Using Cytotec on a woman with previous cesarean can be deadly Episiotomy causes unnecessary damage to mother with infrequent benefits Hand washing reduces the spread of infection Inducing labor increases risk for cesarean in first-time mothers Twilight sleep prevents mothers from bonding post-delivery  Yes, of course we need some level of experimentation when it comes to science and the practice of medicine.  For example, epidurals allow women to be awake when baby is born, and to bond with baby post-cesarean.  Epidurals began being used because an anesthesiologist decided to try it out on a patient. However, most women and partners do not realize that the majority of interventions in pregnancy and birth are not offered AFTER the evidence is solid, it's being gathered with each family.  The problem is most assume that for low-risk pregnancy, working with an obstetrician is the safest. The data shows that midwifery care is the safest for low risk pregnancy, and that referral to an obstetrician when risk or need arises leads to better outcomes for moms and babies.   The biggest problem is that women, mothers, dads, grandparents, friend and family do not know what the evidence shows is the safest, so we jsut assume that "more technology" equal better results.  If you want to avoid this mistake: learn the evidence with me as your Digital Doula   If you live in the East Valley of Phoenix and are looking for a Newborn Care Specialist or Night Nanny, work with me: East Valley NCS   If your baby is already here and you need help navigating all of this, work with me virtually -- join the waitlist   If you are expecting, join me in Sage Mama Maternity.  Blending evidence and intuition is the key to experiencing a postitive pregnancy, birth and postpartum. The Value of Support as You Find Your Path

Interview with former clients Devin and Katie   This episode is full of wisdom from first time parents Devin and Katie.  I was honored to be their newborn care specialist for five months.  Devin and Katie are an incredible couple who allowed me to serve them and guide them through common and not-as-comon challenges with a newborn including newborn sleep patterns oral tethers strong let-down reflex  mild infant reflux and gas the learning curve of normal newborn development postpartum anxieties finding their own path forward as new parents I found working with them to be an absolute pleasure as they were excited to learn from my experience with open minds and hearts. As You Prepare for Baby, Don't Forget This!

"I was completely unprepared, blind to the other birth that was happening; the birth of myself as a mother." - Kimberly Ann Johnson In this episode we discuss the time, energy and financial investment that goes into preparing for the birth of your baby, but generally little attention, time and investment is given to support the (re)birth of the expectant woman as a mother. This episode is full of practical considerations ot ensure as a mom you are prepared emotionally, mentally and physically so that your emergence as a mother is nourishing and supported. As a mother, everything changes and that includes you.  It's not that the old you is dead, its that you've been reborn and your priorities are different, your body is different, your thoughts are different, how you spend your time is differenrt, your needs are different.  I want you to feel emotionally, physically and spiritually supported so that when you birth your baby and metaphysically birth a new version of you; you feel grounded, supported and capable of getting whatever it is that you need.   To get access to the Post Partum Vault, join me in Sage Motherhood Mentorship

Moms Need Rest More Than Resolutions this New Year

Let's talk about the pressures of society that make moms think they need to start fresh with eating, exercise, habit and self discipline goals just because it's January. This Episode is brought to you by Sage Motherhood Mentorship Instead of looking at the Gregorian calendar to determine where our intentions and energy go, instead let's look at the ebbs and flows reflected in the seasons, lunar cycle, menstrual cycle and childbearing year. In this episode you'll learn how to best maximize your energy and intentions in the first, second, third and fourth trimesters.  You'll also learn how to tap into similar flows if you are not pregnant and not menstruating and how to do it if you are menstruating. More than likely, you find yourself enjoying a little more cozniness and sleep right now, it's probably NOT the time for you to jump back into the gym and eat 14 salads a week.  I'll help you learn how to listen to your body for what it needs and respond to that. Looking to get support in your first trimester?  Join me in First Trimester Mamas, it's a free Facebook group and we are starting a 5 day challenge to help you boost your prenatal nutrition in very practical and achievable ways. 22. DHA for Healthy Baby, Birth and Maternal Mental Health

DHA is a crucial nutrient for pregnancy health, infant brain development, maternal mental health and reducing the risk of preterm birth.   DHA is easily obtained by consuming 2-3 servings per week of cold-water, fatty fish.     Vegan, Vegetarian and Low-seafood diets are ineffective to provide mom and baby with enough DHA for optimal fetal and maternal health.     One of the best things you can do for your pregnancy, birth and postpartum is to consume a whole foods diet; and supplement for places where your diet may not be sufficient.   When looking for a DHA supplement, make sure the company has been tested for heavy metal and PCB contaminants, that the supplement also contains EPA and look to see how much (if any) VItamin A is added to the supplment.   The DHA I take click here use code SHAREYL for 10% off your first order (50 minimum)   My other favorite prenatal supplements: click here Join First Trimester Mamas   Have me in your pocket for pregnancy & postpartum in Sage Motherhood Mentorship   Preparing your mindset for motherhood is a POWERFUL tool, get started with my prenatal affirmations.

Holistic Support for Pregnancy & Birth Concerns

I believe … medicine alone will never fully address and support the holistic needs of women, therefore… I encourage women to not only use prescriptions but also to address their mental and spiritual health through lifestyle and therapy   Medicine addresses our chemistry, our microbiome and can offer incredible results; however most circumstances that can indicate medication also respond quite well to a holistic approach. For example Gestational Diabetes responds to nutrient dense foods, herbs, exercise and on some level: mindset. And PUPPPs may respond to lifestyle changes like reducing harsh chemicals in skin care products, essential oils, masques, etc.  Utilizing herbs, plants, oils, homeopathy, nutrition, meditation, exercise, prayer, mindfulness, healthy boundaries may also produce highly impactful results. Possibly keeping open your options for a intervention-free birth. This is part of my mentorship program, helping you understand different approaches for your holistic well-being and then you decide the path for you, but it's hard to use a natural approach if you aren't aware of it.   Let's go mama: let's let medicine have its place and let holistic care be your "north star" because that status quo isn't good enough for you. Folate's Long Lost Cousin: Choline

Choline falls into the B family of vitamins, though it doesn't have a "b" name like b12, b9, etc. More about choline: Choline in mom: builds cell membranes supports nerve function DNA synthesis cell messaging fat transport and  metabolism in mom Choline for baby Builds the nervous system,  Brain development, especially the hippocampus and memory health Placental health Positively impact life-long gene expression.   Choline works in tandem with omega-3 fat, DHA and enhances how DHA is incorporated into the cells.  Choline rich foods tend to also be high in DHA   Risks of not enough choline: 94% of pregnany women in the USA do not consume enough choline. Deficiencies are clearly linked to neural tube defects & cleft palate. Optimal choline levels are linked to prevention of preeclampsia Our bodies do not produce enough choline for essential functions, therefore we must get it through diet (or supplementation if Vegan). Recommendations: Current research shows the amount of choline consumed in pregnancy should be closer to 930 mg per day. For women with MTHFR gene mutation, choline needs to be substantially higher than 450 mg.     Foods Rich in Choline: visit the page for episode 14   The standard recommendations do not lead to pregnancy, birth, infant or life-long health.     This is why I offer prenatal nutrition inside of Sage Motherhood Mentorship.  I'm shortening the learning curve of a whole foods approach to health and offering specific information for pregnancy and lactation.     You deserve the best and so does your little one.   You won't get it from the standard of care.    Check out The Road Not Taken: my masterclass on taking a different approach to birth, and why it's an uphill battle to get a natural birth in the hospital.  Links The Road Not Taken Pregnancy Nutrition in Sage Motherhood Mentorship Real Food for Pregnancy * Real Food for Gestational Diabetes * Real Food for Pregnancy, by Lily Nichols National Institutes for Health * I am an Amazon Associate and may earn a commission on products you purchase through this link at no additional cost to you.  Thank you for supporting my small business.

A Vision that Shakes the Status Quo

A vision for mothers, babies, fathers, partners and community around the childbearing year that shakes the status quo. There is a lot to consider when pregnant and welcoming a new baby, and it goes far beyond the technical & physical aspects like getting on a prenatal vitamin, choosing a provider and researching car seats.   It even goes beyond hiring a doula, taking childbirth education classes and reading a breastfeeding book. What you actually need To have an experience that you look back on with fondness and gratitude instead of relief is to be emotionally, physically, mentally prepared & supported.   Our society is pretty okay at preparation, but lacking in support and we often forget that our emotional and mental health is more important than the physical experience, because eventually pregnancy ends but our emotions & thoughts are still there. My vision that shakes the status quo is:   Wise, intuitive, healthy and confident mamas Healthy, happy and developmentally supported babies. Partners who are open to nuance and complexity and prioritize the health of their relationship with a mama who is rapidly changing. Dads, Parents see the importance of  forming healthy attachments and understand how to do that. Siblings to witness this transformation in mama and still feel loved, accepted and significant. Extended family who LISTEN to mama. A community that is so good that every mama has multiple people offer to coordinate meal drop offs, and help around the house for the first six weeks.   My vision is for you to be radically resourced throughout the childbearing year.    Does this vision speak to you?  Do you desire a childbearing year so good you can't help but talk about it?  Book your free consultation with me today.  https://calendly.com/stefanie-melo Working on shifting your fears around birth & baby?  Get your prenatal affirmations PDF + Audio recordings now https://stefaniemelo.com/page/prenatal-affirmations Thinking about a natural birth? Optimizing Calcium Abosorption in Pregnancy

Calcium in Pregnancy, Pre-eclampsia & Absorbing calcium   Calcium is a mineral that has a special relationship with Vitamin D. ⁣ Calcium requirements for pregnant and lactating women vary by age. ⁣ If you are 18 or younger and pregnant or lactating you should be getting at least 1300mg ⁣ Ages 19-50 and lactating or pregnant are least 1000mg    Calcium supplementation is indicated for women with a history of high-blood pressure and preeclampsia. Research shows a combination supplement of magnesium sulfate, vitamin d, calcium and zinc significantly reduces blood pressure.  The doses studied were 800 mg calcium,  200 mg magnesium,  8 mg zinc and  400 IU Vitamin D3 ⁣ Your body uses calcium to support: Muscular strength and stamina Bone strength  Tooth Strength ⁣ Excellent Food Sources of Calcium Collard greens 266 mg Broccoli rabe 100 mg Cress, 41mg Kale cooked, 179 mg, Green soybeans, cooked 175 mg Bok choy, 160mg Rhubarb 105mg Broccoli 70mg Oranges 55mg  ⁣ Another important fact with calcium absorption is that you need healthy intestines to absorb calcium, and healthy liver and kidneys to convert calcium from the digestive system to the forms needed to build your body and baby's.   ⁣ Two ways to support your liver:   Reduce exposure to things that damage the liver: Phthalates -2023 study showed that phthalate exposure increased liver enzyme levels, a sign of liver damage Acetaminophen Ibuprofen Alcohol abuse (defined as 1 serving per day for women, 2 per day for men) Synthetic vitamin A  Excessive sugar  sugar, 2023 study showed that phthalate exposure increased liver enzyme levels, a sign of liver damage Parabens, if kidneys are not functioning properly   Action item: ditch commercial skin care and body products as they almost always contain phthalates.    Learn more about ditching harmful products Help your body cleanse from exposures that harm the liver, from Dr. Sara Gottfried   Add bitter vegetables and herbs at every meal for their liver benefit: arugula, dandelion leaves, endive, radish, sage - include these in your 11 servings of vegetables per day count Eat alliums to raise glutathione such as onions, garlic, and leeks. Eat cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, radishes. Eat the rainbow, every day Add prebiotic fiber, which helps remove BPA in the system, such as asparagus, burdock root, Jerusalem artichoke, jicama, garlic, onion, leeks, unripe (green) bananas, flaxseeds, seaweed, konjac root, and yacon root Spices to reduce inflammation: turmeric, red pepper and chili, black pepper, licorice, clove, ginger, garlic, coriander, cardamom, fenugreek, cumin, rosemary, anise, cinnamon. Consume 4-5 forkfuls of probiotic foods per day: sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi. Ways to support your intestinal tract: Eat a diverse variety of foods Consume lots of  fruits and vegetables and legumes Eat lots of fruits,  Eat fermented foods for naturally occurring probiotics Consume Prebiotic foods Consume polyphenols Eat Whole grains vs processed grains (some research shows wheat, barley and rye can increase gut permeability–and that isn't a good thing)  Breastfeed for 6 months exclusively Take a high-quality diverse probiotic supplement if health has been compromised  How to support your kidneys Physical activity Manage blood sugar Reduce blood pressure Maintain a healthy weight Improve hydration, 1.5 - 2L per day as the baseline Do not smoke Reduce over the counter medications,  Consider alternatives to the herb kava kava if you have signs of impaired kidney function.   It is my desire to see you have a positive pregnancy, a beautiful birth and a peaceful postpartum.  Nutrition is one of the key elements to those objectives.  This is why I include a prenatal nutrition class in Sage Motherhood Mentorship.  Calcium is just one of many important minerals during your childbearing year, come work with me in Sage Motherhood Mentorship and let's optimize your nutrition so that you can have the childbearing year of your dreams.        Looking for a VBAC or homebirth?  Then you don't want to miss my masterclass The Road Not Taken. How to Surrender in Birth & Motherhood

In this episode I dive into one of the most helpful pain management tools in labor: surrender.   I want every mama to embrace birth and all it's complexities because when you are fully present in it, you can come through with so many powerful lessons for your future as a mother.   I share with you exactly how to surrender in birth and tie that wisdom into a fairly challenging morning as a mom with a sick three year old.     Surrender is a powerful tool and when you can surrender and remain calm in a long and strong contraction, you can surrender and remain calm when your three year old is having a tantrum.   As you prepare yourself for the type of birth you desire, make sure to head over to get my FREE Prenatal Affirmations   Are you looking for a VBAC, Homebirth or Natural Birth?  Prepare yourself with my masterclass The Road Not Taken   I am currently accepting just a handful of mamas into my program: Sage Motherhood Mentorship, and am offering some incredible bonuses right now. What They Won't Tell You About Breastfeeding

In this episode we explore three things that "they" won't tell you about breastfeeding.  A few points of clarification. I 100% support the decision to use formula or donated milk for any reason.   I am a HUGE advocate for breastfeeding because it is almost always the easiest for baby to digest, offers more immune support, bonding opportunities and is better for your hormonal experience and ideally mama's mental health.   The second statement does not apply to everyone.    Breastfeeding is not always easy or come naturally, for most women it's a big effort that pays off in physical and emotional benefits.   However, there are real complications that arise and in this episode we explore some of that with extra focus on the first month and week of baby's life.   We touch on: How our inappropriate expectations and complicate and derail breastfeeding, Why policy changes are necessary to increase breastfeeding rates birth - six months, Three key identifiers of an issue with a baby getting enough milk, The four keys to create a great milk supply,  Guidelines for diapers the first five days of life. Additional signs of issues and when to seek help. Cultivating a Birth Mindset that Delivers

Cultivating a Birth Mindset that Delivers In this episode I talk about how birth is not primarily a physical experience.  A majority of the time when a mama takes a step off of her birth plan, it's not because of a physical problem.  It's most often a mental or emotional challenge that creates the desire or need for intervention. Birth is primarily mental and emotional work. In order to cultivate a birth mindset that delivers you need to do the mindset work.  Become aware of your fears, Become aware of your thoughts, Become honest about your emotions, Become aware of the evidence, Own your agency and actively choose.    Do you want to cultivate a birth mindset that delivers?  Start here https://stefaniemelo.com/landing/prenatal-affirmations with my Prenatal Affirmations A birth mindset that delivers offers so much more than having a positive birth experience.  It's about cultivating a childbearing year that feels really good.  It's about embracing the full-person experience: mind, body, soul.  You are birthing not only your baby, but yourself as a mother.   It's not just about mom and baby's experience, but also your working with your partner family so that you navigate the challenges just as well as you embrace the easy parts.  If you are ready to step in to a positive experience: pregnancy, birth and postpartum, Sage Motherhood is the place for you.  Learn all about it here https://stefaniemelo.com/page/sage-motherhood-mentorship Then book your call with me to get started https://calendly.com/stefanie-melo

Folic Acid vs Folate for Pregnancy

Folate & Prenatal Nutrition Folate is a necessary nutrient to sustain a pregnancy and prevent neural tube defects. Folate and Folic Acid work differently in the body, and consuming folate is safer than taking folic acid supplements. FDA currently recommends 600mcg for pregnancy and 500mcg for lactation. Foods based vitamins tend to have higher absorption rates because vitamins, minerals and foods work synergistically.  So "higher" does of synthetic vitamins aren't necessarily "better" LINKS: some of these links are affiliate links  You can shop my recommendations here and when you purchase you'll get access to my prenatal nutrition class which is normally reserved for only Sage Motherhood Mentorship Clients. Ep. 1 What is Sage Motherhood?

Show Notes   In this Episode I share  -Why I chose the word Sage for my business -How I define sage motherhood -My beliefs around motherhood, pregnancy, birth, parenting and babies.   We all have teaching, experiences and cultural practices that shape the way we view femininity, menstruation, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, motherhood, marriage and parenting. It's important to understand those influences, unconscious beliefs and how this shapes the way you experience your body and motherhood. I invite you to take some time to journal and reflect on any ways that my beliefs have impacted you, maybe unnecessary cesareans felt like a sting.  It could be my wording, it could be that you disagree based on evidence, it could be because there is an experience you've encountered that triggers difficult emotions. I'm not here to harm any mother, baby or family.  I am here to invite you into the possibility that your emotions, beliefs and experience matter profoundly.  Also, to the possibility that your emotion, beliefs and experience could prevent you from experiencing abundance in different areas of life and motherhood. My Motherhood Story

In this episode, I share the first 10 years of my motherhood story, because it shaped my perinatal coaching and parent coaching practice.  I invite you to listen and reflect on ways you see parts of your story in mine and how your beliefs, emotions and experience have shaped your journey.  Content Warning: my story very briefly mentions gun violence, pregnancy loss, suicidal ideation. I'll cover  -how evangelical christianity shaped my view on motherhood -how I became pregnant with amenorrhea due to PCOS -why I decided to homebirth -how I became a birth doula -how lactation issues shifted my physical health -how physical changes and a "crunchy" lifestyle didn't fully address my mental health -why my parenting convictions led me to leave the church -how leaving the church rocked my identity  -how covid changed everything -a glimpse into our 3 months of full time RV travel -how coaching transformed her mental health -the ways in which the church failed me -the ways in which society failed me -the ways I set myself up for feelings of failure as a mother.   Mama, please remember your mental health,  your emotional health and your physical health all matter.  It's important to prioritize all of them, you are just as valuable as your baby and children, and they need a happy and healthy you to become who they are meant to be.  There is no shame in getting help on your motherhood journey.
