Stu Smith: Are High Performance Strategies Used by Professional Athletes Really Relevant to My Life?
In this special episode of Scoreboard’s Behind the Scenes of Sport mini-series, Chris Titley is joined again by Stu Smith for a practical and honest conversation about human performance, daily habits and whether the tools used by elite athletes can genuinely apply to everyday life. The episode begins with Chris reflecting on his own experience through the Vitalis Institute program, and the habits that have stayed with him. From reducing screen time and putting the phone away before bed, to breathing, journaling, sitting outside without devices and being more prepared for the next day, the conversation shows how small changes can start to shift energy, headspace and relationships.Stu explains why high performance is not just for professional athletes, CEOs or people on big stages. The same principles that help a cricketer walk out to bat or a snowboarder prepare for a run can also help a parent get through a busy week, a business owner manage stress, or anyone trying to be more present at home. The focus is on clarity, emotional control, recovery, physical capacity, relationships and a stronger sense of agency.A big part of the conversation centres on phones, screens and the pull of easy dopamine. Chris talks openly about becoming more aware of his own phone habits, how often he was reaching for it, and the impact that can have on family life. Stu breaks down why attention matters, why constant stimulation can affect headspace, and why learning to pause before acting on an impulse is such an important skill. The episode also explores self-talk, the “chimp” in your head, victim mindset, acceptance, resilience and the power of shifting language from “I have to” to “I get to”. Chris and Stu discuss how these ideas show up in sport, work and family life, and how small moments of awareness can help people move away from frustration, comparison and distraction. This is a conversation about control, responsibility and building better habits one choice at a time. The message is simple: high performance strategies are not reserved for elite athletes. They are tools for anyone who wants to feel better, think clearer, connect more deeply and perform well in the life they are already living.

#178: Teremoana Teremoana (Boxing) Faith, Family and the Fight for a Bigger Purpose
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley is joined by Teremoana Teremoana, undefeated heavyweight boxer and Australian Olympian, for a grounded and honest conversation about boxing, family, faith and the journey from reluctant fighter to world title ambition.Teremoana reflects on a strong 2026, being undefeated for the year and continuing to build his record as a professional. He talks about learning from every fight, enjoying the process, and adjusting to the parts of the sport that now sit outside the ring, from sponsors and podcasts to meeting business people and building a team around him.The conversation goes back to his early years in rugby league, where he dreamed of playing for the New South Wales Blues and ran around for Centenary Panthers. Boxing was not his first love. In fact, he admits he did not really like it as a young fighter, but did it out of respect for his father, who wanted him to learn discipline, confidence and how to protect his family.Teremoana also shares the turning point that changed everything. After his grandfather passed away, he asked people to start calling him by his first name, Teremoana, and soon after made the decision to chase the dream of becoming heavyweight world champion. He left behind plans for a plumbing business, travelled Australia with his family, came back to Brisbane with $120 to his name, and committed the next decade of his life to boxing. There is plenty on preparation, mindset and the reality of the sport. Teremoana talks about trusting his coaches, building a tight team, finding the right fighting weight, improving his nutrition, and showing up every day for the one percent gains. He also opens up on faith, nerves, visualisation, training twice a day, recovery, golf, and why boxing still comes down to doing the work and listening well. This is a conversation about purpose, sacrifice and knowing why you are stepping into the ring. For Teremoana, the fight is bigger than himself. It is about family, Cook Islands heritage, faith, and inspiring the next generation to believe there is more possible for them too.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #177: Jamie Young (Soccer) Ruthless Standards and Life After the Gloves
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley is joined by Jamie Young, former A-League goalkeeper, championship winner and now athlete consultant, for a raw and thoughtful conversation about football, identity, pressure and the next chapter after 25 years in the professional game.Jamie reflects on a year of major transition, from retiring as a player and moving back to Brisbane, to completing his PhD and working out what life looks like beyond the dressing room. After seven seasons with Brisbane Roar, a championship-winning stint at Western United and his final years at Melbourne City, he speaks with real honesty about walking away from the game at peace. The conversation goes back to Jamie’s early years in Brisbane, where a mix of sports, hand-eye coordination and a Scottish dad who did not want him to be a goalkeeper all shaped the start of his career. He talks about leaving school as a teenager for a trial at Reading, growing up quickly in the UK system, and the ruthless reality of football environments where performance, selection and survival were never guaranteed.Jamie also opens up on playing for England at youth level, competing with future Premier League players, and the imposter syndrome that can come from being around big names before you really know who you are. He reflects on how football has changed, why coaching is less abrasive now, and why elite sport still needs accountability, edge and people who can handle the big moments. There is plenty on culture, leadership and the standards that sit behind successful teams. Jamie talks about the difference between mediocrity and high performance, why he left Brisbane when he felt the environment had shifted, and how Western United gave him the clarity, accountability and winning culture he was chasing. He also shares what he now sees as a gap in sport, with young players often taught how to play but not always how to build a career.Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you? https://swyftx.com/about/Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight.PocketSmith’s got a special offer for Scoreboard listeners: get 50% off your first two months of PocketSmith’s Foundation plan. https://www.pocketsmith.com/scoreboard/More info: More episodes: www.scoreboardpodcast.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Scoreboardpodcast Partnerships: [email protected]

#176: Matt Renshaw (Cricket) Fun, Family and Finding His Own Game
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley is joined by Matt Renshaw, Australian and Queensland cricketer, for a relaxed and honest conversation about cricket, perspective, family and finding joy in the game again.Matt reflects on a 2026 that has already taken him in unexpected directions, from a strong Big Bash campaign to playing T20 cricket for Australia, being called into a World Cup squad, and touring Pakistan and Bangladesh. He talks about learning not to assume what comes next, staying ready for different formats and schedules, and balancing life on the road with being a husband and dad to two young kids. The conversation also explores how fatherhood has changed the way Matt sees cricket. He shares how small moments with his kids can quickly shift his mood after a dismissal, and why watching them play in the backyard has reminded him of the simple joy that sits underneath the professional game. For Matt, contracts, selection and media attention matter, but they are not the whole story. There is plenty of cricket detail too, from batting routines and trigger movements to red-ball patience, white-ball freedom and the challenge of switching between formats. Matt speaks openly about his dislike of aimless net sessions, why he prefers game-based practice, and how music, presence and a bit of fun help him stay loose at the crease. He also looks back on his wild Big Bash innings at the Gabba with Jack Wood, where belief, timing and a few things going their way turned a huge chase into one of those nights that still feels hard to explain.Matt also opens up on the realities of playing for Australia, including the pride of wearing the same kit as his childhood heroes, the pressure that comes with selection, and the noise that follows athletes through media and social media. He speaks honestly about online abuse, betting culture, and the importance of keeping a tight inner circle when the outside commentary gets loud.Away from cricket, the episode covers golf, lawn care, Harry Potter Lego, barbecues, coffee, saunas, phone habits and the small things that help Matt switch off. This is a conversation about growth, perspective and still seeing cricket as something to enjoy. For Matt, the game has changed plenty over the past decade, but the best version of his cricket still comes from playing, competing and having fun.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. He speaks honestly about how consuming the game can be, from checking county scores in the morning to preparing his body and mind through the off-season.The conversation goes deep into the mental side of cricket. Corey explains how he uses visualisation, review, rating systems and scenario-based preparation to get himself ready for first-class cricket. He also unpacks the idea of blue brain and red brain, and how understanding stress, clarity and arousal has helped him manage pressure in long spells and tight moments.Corey also shares the less glamorous side of the journey, from missing junior selections to working his way through grade cricket, changing clubs, finding the right coaching and building belief through what he calls naive optimism. He talks about wanting to play first grade before the dream grew into Western Australia and beyond, and why he still feels like he is only scratching the surface of the cricketer he can become. There is plenty for cricket lovers too, from the changing shape of the game and the rise of franchise cricket to the craft of bowling to players like Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. For Sally, success was never accidental. It came from relentless preparation, attention to detail and a deep connection between process and performance. The conversation explores the sacrifices and structure required to compete at Olympic level, but Sally is quick to challenge the idea that elite athletes are simply “selfish.” Instead, she frames it as commitment to a craft, protecting the routines, habits and recovery needed to perform at the highest standard. She reflects on how athletics completely defined her during her career and why she is comfortable admitting that pursuit demanded almost everything from her. Now working in radio and broadcasting, Sally shares how media unexpectedly gave her the same nervous excitement she once felt standing on a start line. From learning to read autocue's live on air to developing confidence through acting classes and commentary work, she speaks about embracing discomfort and allowing herself to be a beginner again. There is also a fascinating insight into the mind of an elite athlete. Sally explains how she naturally visualised races, felt every movement in her body and became so technically aware that she could detect mistakes invisible to everyone else. Whether discussing Michael Jackson’s perfectionism, Roger Federer’s effortless movement or Bruce McAvaney's storytelling, she is drawn to people who make greatness look smooth and natural despite the enormous work behind it. This is a conversation about reinvention, obsession and learning to channel the same drive that once chased Olympic gold into a completely new chapter of life. Sally’s message is simple but powerful: keep holding onto the dream, keep learning and find joy in the hard work required to become great.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #170: Brad Hogg (Cricket) Fun First, Pressure Second
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down with former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg for a fast moving and deeply insightful conversation about cricket, mindset and staying connected to the joy of the game. From country cricket in Western Australia to representing Australia on the world stage, Brad reflects on the lessons that shaped both his career and his outlook on life. Brad shares stories from growing up around country cricket, where the game was built on participation, community and giving everyone a chance. Those early lessons around teamwork and belonging stayed with him throughout his career and became central to how he viewed success at the highest level. He explains how putting the team first ultimately transformed his career after a difficult period in the late 1990s when he lost sight of what had made him successful in the first place. The conversation also dives into pressure and performance. Brad opens up about being dropped from the WA side, the honest feedback from Justin Langer that forced him to look inward and the mindset shift that followed. Rather than obsessing over playing for Australia, he learned to focus on improving one small thing each day, whether that was fitness, bowling accuracy or preparation. It became a philosophy that not only rebuilt his cricket career but still guides his life today. There is plenty of humour throughout as well. From facing Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson in the nets to stories about Jimmy Maher, Andrew Symonds and the energy of Australian dressing rooms, Brad reflects on why having fun was one of his greatest performance tools. For him, relaxed players perform better, connect better and handle pressure better. Beyond cricket, Brad speaks passionately about helping younger players grow, protecting the culture of Australian cricket and ensuring the game remains connected to the fans and communities that built it. He also shares concerns around modern professionalism, the pressures of franchise cricket and the challenge players now face balancing financial decisions with the dream of Test cricket. 🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #169: Jordan Buckingham (Cricket) Process Over Scoreboard
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down with South Australian fast bowler Jordan Buckingham to unpack the mindset behind back to back Sheffield Shield success and what it takes to evolve from a fringe player into a key contributor in a winning team. Jordan reflects on his journey from Victoria to South Australia, a move that came with uncertainty but ultimately became the foundation of his career. He shares how early years of struggle and team rebuilds have turned into reward, with the group now chasing a rare three peat after decades without success. A major theme throughout the conversation is shifting focus away from individual stats and toward team success. Jordan explains how becoming more process driven changed his performance, learning to judge himself on effort, role execution and contribution rather than wickets alone. For a fast bowler in particular, where so much is out of your control, that mindset has been critical. He also opens up about the mental side of the game, from working with sports psychologists to managing emotion and finding the right level of intensity on the field. Whether it is competing hard against top players or handling big moments late in games, Jordan embraces the contest and looks for small edges that separate good performances from great ones. Off the field, there is a lighter side too, from paddle tennis and golf to life with teammates and the balance required in a long cricket season. But the message remains consistent: focus on the process, stay present and let the results take care of themselves.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #158 - Tom Rockliff (AFL) Finding Purpose Beyond the Game
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down in person with former AFL Lions captain Tom Rockliff for a candid conversation about life after professional sport. From playing more than 200 AFL games with Brisbane and Port Adelaide to now running his own business, Tom reflects on the transition from elite footballer to entrepreneur and father. Tom opens up about the reality many athletes face when the game finishes. After years of structure, competition and purpose, retirement can leave a void. For Tom, that journey included a difficult divorce, time away from his kids and a period where he had to rebuild both personally and professionally. Running became a mental reset, journaling helped him process the day and working with a psychologist gave him strategies to regain clarity and direction. He also shares why giving up alcohol became a turning point in his life. What started as a short break quickly revealed how much clearer, healthier and more present he felt without it. Combined with routine, exercise and strong personal principles, Tom explains how these habits helped him become more grounded and focused on what matters most. Now running Rockliff Finance and balancing work with fatherhood, Tom talks about the lessons sport gave him that translate into business. Competitiveness, resilience and discipline remain central to how he approaches life today. While he admits he did not have the natural athletic gifts of many players, he believes his football IQ, determination and willingness to work harder than others were the traits that allowed him to carve out a long AFL career. This episode is a powerful reflection on identity after sport, personal growth and learning how to rebuild purpose when life changes direction. Tom’s message is simple but meaningful: focus on the fundamentals, stay disciplined and aim to be the best version of yourself every single day. #157: Darren Lockyer + Grant Wechsel - From Brisbane to London: Lockyer’s Global Play for the Broncos
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down face to face with Darren Lockyer and Grant Wechsel to unpack one of the most ambitious plays in global rugby league: their majority ownership of the London Broncos.Recorded in early 2026, the conversation goes deep into why two seasoned operators would back a Championship club in one of the world’s most competitive sporting markets and what it will take to rebuild a professional team in London from the ground up .Darren and Grant break down the investment thesis behind the Broncos, from seven year strategic planning and Super League aspirations to the realities of promotion, IMG grading, and the financial gap between the NRL and the Northern Hemisphere game . They explore the parallels between elite sport and business, culture setting, performance standards, and why focusing on process over outcome remains central to high performance .The discussion also shifts to the modern sports landscape. From social media strategy and global audience building to game day experience innovation, the trio examine why owning a club today means operating as an entertainment business, not just a football team . London’s scale, international appeal, and cross market opportunity are positioned as both the challenge and the upside .Beyond the boardroom, Darren reflects on pivotal life moments that shaped his career, including the early belief shown in him by Broncos scout Cyril Connell , while Grant shares how a career ending injury redirected him from rugby league into business .This is a candid, strategic, and forward looking conversation about risk, legacy, global sport, and what it really takes to build something meaningful in one of the world’s toughest sporting environments. If you are interested in the intersection of sport, investment, leadership, and entertainment, this episode delivers practical insight from two operators who are all in on making London work.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #156: Todd Carney (Rugby League) Rollercoaster to Redemption
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down with Todd Carney for one of the most raw and reflective conversations on the podcast to date. A former NRL star now working as a pathways coach with the Gold Coast Titans, Todd speaks openly about the highs of professional rugby league and the very public lows that followed. Todd describes rugby league as the greatest rollercoaster of his life. It gave him success, identity and opportunity, but also shame, heartache and lessons he had to learn the hard way. He revisits the turning point that changed everything, the drive to rehab on the 24th of February, a moment he now calls his true Scoreboard moment. From that day forward he committed to sobriety, rebuilding trust and redefining who he wanted to be as a father, husband and mentor. The conversation goes deep into discipline and selfishness in high performance sport. Todd argues that young rugby league players must be selfish in the right way if they want to make it, prioritising the game over distractions, ego and temptation. He reflects on alcohol, gambling and the environment that can swallow talented athletes, explaining how central alcohol was to his downward spiral and why removing it changed everything. Now approaching 40, Todd talks about fatherhood, routine and daily habits that keep him grounded. Early morning training, cold showers, structured sleep and one day at a time thinking are his anchors. He is honest about slip ups, about the ongoing work required to stay sober, and about accepting that his past will always be part of his story. This episode is not just about rugby league. It is about accountability, identity and second chances. Todd does not hide from the mistakes that defined headlines, but instead uses them as tools to guide the next generation. His message is simple: if you are going to chase the dream, commit fully, own your decisions, and never ignore the moment you know something needs to change. If you follow rugby league or care about the human side of elite sport, this is a powerful listen.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight. #155: Brandon Starcevich (AFL) Own Your Space
Brandon Starcevich joins Chris Titley for a grounded, thoughtful conversation about change, pressure and backing yourself when the spotlight is on. Fresh off a move back to Perth and into a new club environment, Brandon reflects on leaving Brisbane after a premiership run, navigating free agency and choosing what felt right personally rather than purely professionally. He opens up about being an intensity driven defender who relies on preparation and mental sharpness to compete with more naturally gifted opponents. From spending hours studying matchups to grounding himself through breathing and visualisation before running out, Brandon explains how he manages big game nerves and turns emotional energy into focus. He shares the shift from early career hype and pressure to appreciating the moment, smiling before a packed stadium and embracing the noise rather than fearing it. There is honesty around setbacks too. Brandon talks about injuries, the frustration of watching from the sidelines, and the discipline required to attack rehab so that when opportunity returns he is ready. He reflects on the sting of losses, the importance of reviewing vision with coaches to properly put games to bed, and the mindset of staying even keel across a long season. A powerful thread through the episode is belief. Brandon revisits a pivotal under 18 moment when a tough conversation with Peter Sumich forced him to lift his standards and truly commit. Later in his AFL journey, advice about “owning your space” from David Boon became a mental anchor. Whether it is a one on one contest, a matchup, or a moment late in a game, he believes in claiming responsibility for what is directly in front of him. Off the field, Brandon is leaning into business with a new venture called Club Scout, aimed at bringing data driven valuations into local football recruiting. It reflects his broader interest in growth beyond the game and understanding value, opportunity and long term impact. #154: Matt Flynn (AFL) Voice, Consistency and the Long Game
Matt Flynn joins Chris Titley to reflect on a season that finally clicked and on the habits that let him stay available, useful and calm in a demanding AFL life. Matt talks honestly about early-career injuries and the work he and the medical team did to close gaps in his body, how a focus on simple, daily routines, sleep, walks, meditation and steady social connection fed into more consistent performances, and why consistency off the field follows consistency on it.He explains the practical side of being a modern ruckman: building aerobic capacity to influence contests both in front of and behind the ball, using GPS and game metrics to monitor load, and learning to be present rather than over-aroused before big games. Matt also describes the quiet shift from chasing personal stats to helping teammates win, how the “voice” became his most reliable contribution, and why demanding communication lifts team standards.Matt reflects on the move from GWS to West Coast, the awkward reset that turned into a fresh start, and the club work that gives the group a clear path to improve year on year. He is candid about the sting of narrow losses, the need to learn fast from review, and the simple metric mindset the group uses to measure progress.🔗 Show notesThis episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/ Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZThe Do You Budget Segment is powered by PocketSmith.PocketSmith is personal finance software made for the household CFO — the one keeping the family budget on track, making sure the bills are paid, and the big goals are in sight.
