Confidence or Illusion? Examining the Future of Beauty Culture with Smart Mirrors
Send us Fan MailWe're sharing our thoughts on the future of beauty culture with the newest innovation hitting the market. The smart mirror. We're wondering is this real confidence or is this marketing that preys on the insecurities of women? Is this individualized beauty tailored to your face or is AI generating the same face for all of us? Is this creating more joy and satisfaction for women or is it keeping us distracted and focused on one thing? We've got some thoughts and we're sure you do too! But first, we're yapping about hump day, shopping, trampolines, and Cinco de Mayo. Then we've got to discuss the latest summer house drama, the met gala, and Hollis's important message to the billionaires. Next, we're getting in the weeds over this new Swan Beauty Mirror. Quite frankly, we don't like it. Not one bit. However, there's a lot to unpack here and as always the nuances are nuancing and we'd love to hear what you think. Then we're circling back to the top of the episode to chat about Dark Side Danny (not too brag but we clocked this guy months ago) and Luke's recent comments that had our jaws on the floor. As always we wrap it up with gripes about trigger warnings and butter behavior and grapes to 90s nostalgia. Examining Self Worth, Women's Health, and Beauty Culture in Famesick: A Memoir
Send us Fan MailToday we're exploring themes of self-worth (especially as it pertains to chronic illness and our perception of the physical female body), identity, mental health, relationship dynamics, and beauty culture in a discussion about Lena Dunham's new book Famesick. We'll be sharing some thoughts on her interviews with the New York Times and other media outlets as well as discussing some insights from her book. Hollis has been reading the book so there may be some light spoilers but we won't be getting into too many details so you can still enjoy if you plan to read it. But first, we're yapping about potty training, taking the pressure off, new nightmares unlocked, and tick season. Next, its a quick reality check to discuss the latest summer house drama. Then we've got thoughts on the recent discourse surrounding photos of Millie Bobbie Brown and her husband. These photos have sparked controversy around labor division in parenting and we're wondering does a picture really speak 1,000 words? Next, we're discussing the media speculation around "Ozempic face" and what this means for trends in beauty standards and the way in which we discuss and dissect female bodies. There's a lot to unpack here and as always the issue is layered with valid arguments to support multiple viewpoints. We're striving to find a way to combat societal standards and move the needle for women without perpetuating the existing narratives and it's not an easy thing to do. Finally, its time to get in the weeds with a conversation about Lena Dunham's new book Famesick. The themes are theming and there is much to discuss! As always we wrap it up with gripes about male drivers and choosing poorly and grapes to achieving full adult status and musical geniuses. But first we're yapping about our voices, jumping out of airplanes into war, and becoming the family matriarchs. What do you think? Then it's time for a quick reality check where we dish on the latest bravo tv happenings. We've got thoughts about the summer house audio leak, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion, and the Valley. We could maybe do without hearing from Luke or Danny for a while too. Reality Check: Double Standards in Parenting, Pick Me Girls, and Bravo TV Drama
Send us Fan MailWe're discussing double standards in parenting, the social construct of pick me girls, and digging into a reality check to dish on the latest Bravo TV drama. But, first we're debriefing Hollis's birthday celebration and sharing some embarrassing cell phone faux pas moments. Next, we're reminiscing about Bob and Tom. RIP Bob. Tell me your an 80s baby without telling me your an 80s baby. Then we're discussing Emma Grede's comment in the Wall Street Journal about being a 3 hour mom. We expect mothers to do it all, do it all perfectly, and do it all with gratitude to be given the opportunity, regardless of what is actually reasonable or even possible. And the double standard when discussing fathers is glaring. Next, we've got a circle back to the Blake Lively lawsuit and some expanded thoughts on the conversation around the Summer House Drama. We're discussing pick me girls, labels we affix to women, and we use them as tools to criticize and tear each other down. Then it's on to the Valley and Danny Booko's darkside, Dorit's bob era, her streams of revenue, and Boz's engagement and pregnancy announcement. As always we wrap it up with gripes about weak bladders and new appliances and grapes to productivity and true advertising. We've got thoughts on the Southern Charm reunion and Paige Desorbo's remarks and transparency about her experience with Botox. Finally, we're getting in the weeds with a conversation about Hollywood women who have been labeled as difficult, ungrateful, and classless and faced severe career challenges simply for being outspoken, standing up for themselves, and being successful. We're highlighting Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Lawrence, Megan Fox, and Anne Hathaway and comparing their experiences to those of their male counterparts. She is an extremely smart and accomplished woman who has had a huge impact on pop culture most notably with her book turned hit Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale. She has solidified herself, perhaps unwillingly, as a divisive feminist figure with a body of work featuring female protagonists and encompassing themes around gender roles, identity, agency, and sexual and power politics. Send us Fan MailFirst up a recap of our rager concert weekend and then a brief circle back to the American Eagle jeans ad with Sydney Sweeney to share some thoughts on her recent interview addressing it. Then we're yapping about Kim Kardashian's new show All's Fair and our predictions for the future of Kim's acting career. Pop Culture Archives: Toxic Body Culture Cultivated By 90s and Early 00's Entertainment
Send us Fan MailFirst up we're yapping about martinis, media voices, and movies. Then we're sharing our thoughts on the recent headlines surrounding David Harbour and ex Lilly Allen as well as the allegations brought against him by Millie Bobbie Brown. Unfortunately, this has cast a dark cloud over the Stranger Things finale season premiere which Sam still very much cares about regardless of everyone who insists they have moved on. Then it's a lively debate about Julia Fox's Halloween costume or should we stay artistic statement piece? It sparks a discussion about what's appropriate in terms of Halloween costumes and where we draw the line between appropriation and appreciation. We come to the conclusion that art and expression are interpretive and subjective and there's not necessarily a clear right or wrong answer. We'd love to hear your thoughts! Then it's time to get in the weeds and today we're getting deep! We have talked many times before about diet culture, body image, and the pressure on young girls and women to look a certain way. The 90s and early 00s entertainment and marketing industries showcased impossible and unattainable standards for young girls and women that fostered a culture of extreme thinness. We're reaching into the vault to bring you some moments from Making the Team: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, America's Next Top Model, The Girls Next Door, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, the Victoria's Secret runway shows, MTV music videos, and more. We discuss how those moments shaped our ideas of what we thought we were supposed to look like and how that affected us as adolescent girls, how the landscape has changed and also how it hasn't, as well as what we hope for the future for ourselves and for younger generations. As always we wrap up the episode with gripes about getting older and nuisance animals and grapes to good TV and snacks discoveries.Follow us on IG, TikTok, and subscribe to our YouTube https://www.instagram.com/shesintheweedspod/https://www.tiktok.com/@shesintheweedspodhttps://www.youtube.com/@shesintheweedspod

Next up, we're talking fall decorations and the official start of spooky season which leads us into a discussion about how to not steal joy from ourselves or others and why it's important to lean into whatever makes you happy. Reality Check: RHOC, RHSLC, In the City, Project Runway
Send us Fan MailWe're yapping about TikTok death threats, children's birthday parties, and meet cutes. Next up, we're sticking to our usual form and we've got circle backs! Hollis is sharing her new and maybe slightly improved opinion of Father John Misty and we're bringing you the details on the actual studies that informed the marriage statistic we shared on last week's episode. Spoiler alert, we've been studying what drives men's happiness for far longer than we've been studying pretty much anything about women. Unfortunately, we can't say we're surprised. Speaking of men's happiness we've got some thoughts about Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, and Keith Urban's new girlfriend and then it's on to Taylor and Travis and the release of Life of a Showgirl. Finally, it's time to get in the weeds with a long overdue reality check. We're yapping about RHOC, RHOSLC, the announcement of In the City (Summer House Legacy?), the Project Runway finale and more. The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: Digging Deep on a Woman at the Center of a True Crime Phenomenon
Send us Fan MailSam and Hollis have a lot to catch up on since they haven't seen each other in almost a week. Sam's sharing her first experience as a field trip chaperone and Hollis is giving us her review of the Father John Misty concert she attended. She wasn't so sure about it and it sparks a conversation about art interpretation, authenticity, and the complexities of being an ally in the social justice sense of the word. Next up, we're discussing a statistic that's been floating around for the past couple of years and one woman's take on it in particular. We play a clip in which author Elizabeth Gilbert explains that statistically speaking one of the unhealthiest things a woman can do is marry a man and on the reverse one of the healthiest things a man can do is marry a woman. There's a lot to unpack here and we have a lot of thoughts and a lot more questions. We'd love to hear what you think! After much debate about that it's time to get in the weeds! Today we're getting deep about The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. We're discussing the Hulu show, the 2016 documentary, and what we know about the case itself. We note some parallels to Monica's Lewinsky's story as well as to Hollis's own personal experience of enduring the loss of her roommate in an eerily similar way. (If you want to hear the full story of Hollis's experience listen to episode 2: Trauma Bonded.) As always we wrap up the episode with gripes about fun house mirrors and underwhelming car wash experiences and grapes to live music and proving ourselves wrong. Rewind: Can Women Have It All, Relationship Power Dynamics, and The New Generation of the Patriarchy
Send us Fan MailHey Besties! Welcome back to another Rewind episode of She's in the Weeds. This never before aired episode was originally recorded back in June of 2024 well before the rebrand. What was even happening last summer? Shall we remind you? First up we’re catching up about balancing life with motherhood and the age-old debate of whether or not women can have it all. During this conversation Hollis makes a big revelation and I reflect on my youngest child’s first year of life as we approach her first birthday and the complex feelings of looking forward to the future while simultaneously aching for the past. Next up I’m sharing a funny story about a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood mishap and we’re voicing our concerns for Lady Elaine Fairchild and whether or not she may have a drinking problem. Then it’s on to the Red-Hot Chili Peppers front man and his 19-year-old girlfriend. We’ve got thoughts on this and we’re wondering if you agree? Let us know in the comments. This leads us into a conversation about a recent TikTok trend. Remember the same arm and leg running challenge? Well, we do. And of course, this is what the new generation of the patriarchy would be up to. We get into a conversation about why this trend tends to be dominated by men and what, if any, biological instincts might be driving that. After that we’re relaying some arguments we’ve been fine tuning in our heads for the past 2 weeks, or in my case 20 years, and sharing our perfect comebacks. As always, we’re wrapping it up with gripes about hotels and parking spaces and grapes to grandfathers and hangover free Saturday mornings. We hope you enjoy and thanks for being here! Next, Hollis is sharing some observations about her Amazon delivery drivers and a lost Burger King breakfast sandwich and Sam shares some stories from her days working for Instacart. Fit For TV: Digging Deep on The Biggest Loser Documentary
Send us Fan MailFirst up on today's episode we're wondering why we decided to record in denim because we're already uncomfortable. Does anyone actually wear jeans for comfort? Next Hollis is sharing her near death experience at the gym which just happened to be full of college bros. Will she be able to show her face again? Then it's time for a quick reality check and we're dishing on Gretchen's televangelist confessional looks and the RHOC scene with Emily and Shane regarding the care of their son. Pens Really Peaked in the 90s: Nostalgia, Parasocial Relationships, and Fat Phobia in the Comment Section
Send us Fan MailFirst up, we're yapping about our annual rager of a weekend seeing music and staying out late. We may be pushing 40 but we still got it! Then Sam's sharing a funny story about her 5 year old and school lunches and it sparks a trip down memory lane of what we remember from the school lunches in the 90s. Spoiler alert, not a whole lot has changed! Next, we're discussing kid's birthday parties and how to navigate to gift or not to gift and covering the costs of the party. Parenting is hard. Then it's on to setting the record straight about Hello Kitty, the pen empire of the 90s, and some recent headlines involving Pete Davidson and Jessica Biel. This sparks an interesting discussion about how we feel, or don't feel, when celebrities couples split and when celebrities we admire pass away. The psychology behind this fascinates us. Then we're sharing some thoughts surrounding two TikTokers and the way they are being treated in the comments. The two women are, in our opinions, very similar yet one is being treated horribly while the other is being praised. Tune in for our theory as to why. Next, we're sharing our thoughts about the finale of And Just Like That. Don't come for us but we actually liked it and we're sad to see the series go. Reality Check: Jen Shaw, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Elizabeth Holmes Sharing a Prison
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to another Reality Check episode where we discuss all things Bravo and reality TV! First up, Sam shares a funny story about a misunderstanding of the title "She's in the Weeds" and how this is now a food podcast. Then Hollis gives us the lowdown on her dad's birthday party and the delicious pie she made (I guess this is a food podcast?) Next, Sam is reflecting on having a kindergartner, spilling all the tea on the drop off and pick up situation, and sharing her experience realizing she has to make friends with the school parents. Why is making friends so hard in your 30s? Then we get into some discussion on tv and movies past and present. We are so excited for The Devil Wears Prada 2! We will be SAT! During our discussion we realize we share an affinity for the great Matthew Lillard and that we aren't so sure about pixie haircuts. Or at least Sam's not so sure. After much debate about short hair Sam opens up about her foot deformity so be sure to stay turned for that one. Moving on, we have thoughts to share about the Kardashian jowl trainer and once again we find ourselves in a debate about where to draw the line when supporting a public figure or business. Why does this have to be so hard. Why can't there just be perfect people and companies to give our money to? But unfortunately there's not and we're not perfect either so we're back to focusing on doing 1% better. Thanks, carmom. Then it's time to get in the weeds and dish on the latest reality tv happenings. From The Valley reunion to Ghislaine Maxwell sharing a prison with Jen Shaw we're going to mention it all! Rewind: Are the Olympics Toxic?
Send us Fan MailHey Weed Whackers! Welcome back to another REWIND episode of She’s in the Weeds! This episode was originally recorded on August 7th 2024 well before the rebrand so please enjoy this throwback to the early days of recording. First up Sam’s sharing a perfect example of an “Or Something Like That” moment. Sam and Hollis finally explained the old title in a recent episode of She’s in the Weeds and they will likely keep it as an occasional segment so if you’re looking for come clarity be sure to listen to the announcement of the rebrand in episode 33. Next, they’re chatting about television and the evolution of standup comedy with the introduction of streaming platforms. After that Hollis is bringing us a personal update on her EMDR therapy journey. If you’re curious about what landed her in this type of therapy then listen to episode 2 “Trauma Bonded.” Next, the girls are getting into the main topic for the episode which is the Olympics. They’re sharing some overall thoughts about how it originated and how it globally unites us but also how it can be toxic and how it influences society’s hyper fixation on the gender dichotomy. As usual, in the words of Murray (IYKYK), there’s misogynistic undertones. Finally, they’re wrapping it up with gripes about mail trucks, waiting for our shows to air, and Facebook statuses and grapes to Cory Feldman and Michelin Tires. They hope you enjoy and thanks for being here! Pop Culture Archives: I Need to Warn the President - Reflecting on the Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton Scandal
Send us Fan MailHey Weed Whackers! Welcome back to another Pop Culture Archives episode of She's in the Weeds where we dive into some of our favorite movies, people, crazes, and pop culture moments of yesteryear. Today's episode is all about the Clinton Lewinsky affair and how Monica Lewinsky became our generation's most notorious scandal figure. First, Hollis gives us a recap of Monica's new podcast Reclaiming which gave her the idea for the episode and then the girls are diving right into what they remember from 1998. Next they're making some revelations about things they either didn't remember or perhaps never even knew when it was happening in real time. Sam was 12 and Hollis was 10 in 1998 so it was time to rewind and reexamine everything with adult eyes and ears. The sheer magnitude of the scandal and it's far reaching implications are still hard to believe even 27 years later and Monica's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. The girls discuss how the media portrayed her and some theories on how certain narratives came to be. They'll be getting in the weeds with details from media clips, interviews, documentaries, podcasts, and of course their own opinions on it all. They'll be examining her perspective of the story and how some of the narratives surrounding it have shifted in a post me too culture. Finally they'll be sharing some other allegations surrounding Bill Clinton and thoughts on how a scandal like this would play out in today's society and media. Unhinged Hinge Behavior: How Men vs Women Act on Dating Apps
Send us Fan MailHello Weed Whackers! Whackadoodles!? Double Dubs!? Just spitballing here. Welcome back to another episode of She's in the Weeds! The ladies are kicking off the episode with a recap of the No Kings protest they attended and how good it felt to fulfill their civic duty. They may not have solved all the world's problems but it felt amazing to assemble with like minded people and they encourage you to get out there and make your voice heard. Next up Sam's really struggling with the children's bedtime shenanigans and Hollis needs to figure out how to make small talk with other dog parents. It's tough out there! Next the girls have some thoughts on Paige Desorbo's new sleepwear? line, Daphne. They can't quite figure out what it is, who it's for, or quite frankly who can afford it. Talk of fashion sparks a conversation about size inclusivity and the lack of consideration for all body types. When are designers going to get with the program? Then it's on to some circle backs on the ongoing Blake and Justin drama and the almost forgotten segment for Pop Culture Queen of the month. Spolier alert, it's Rosie O'Donnell. Rosie's really having a moment and it leads Sam and Hollis into a much needed conversation about And Just Like That. What is happening here? At this point they're watching for Carrie's outfits and to feel less alone. (Be sure to listen so you can be on the inside of that joke.) After a sufficient yap session the girls are getting in the weeds about Hollis's dating escapades, unhinged Hinge behavior, and some of the distinct differences between the way men communicate to women online and vice versa. As always they wrap up the episode with gripes about daily life and water consumption and grapes to summer confections and nostalgia. Thanks for being here! Bring in the Feminists and the Critical Race Theorists: AI and the New Age of Online Misogyny
Send us Fan MailHey Weed Whackers!? What do we think, do we like it? It could be fun! We'll workshop it but for now let us know what you think. Today is the day! Welcome to the first official episode of She's in the Weeds! The ladies are kicking off the episode with an introduction of the new name and some back story on the old one, why they changed it, and what listeners can expect as they continue to roll out the podcast face lift. Then they're yapping about vehicle maintenance, leather couches, and Sam makes a surprising revelation about a childhood favorite movie. Next up, the girls are overdue for a reality check. They're sharing thoughts on RHONY's fake news about being canceled, who they hope will return and who might be a fun addition to mix things up. Then its on to the Valley, Danny Booko's dark side, and the never ending BS that spews from Jax Taylor's mouth. Will this man ever change or even learn? Once they've dissected the Bravo drama it's time to get in the weeds. Today's topic is Artificial Intelligence and the new age of online misogyny. AI is an extremely useful tool and something both Sam and Hollis use regularly but they think we can all agree it doesn't come without concerns. They'll be discussing how AI perpetuates and exacerbates gender bias and stereotypes and racial discrimination and how it's influencing a new generation of digital natives. They even asked AI to help them understand this problem and how to solve it and you might be surprised at the answers. Chat is a self aware king and we love to see it! (And yes, chat is a man. For now anyway.) As always they wrap up the episode with gripes about driving and bedtime struggles and grapes to sign in conveniences and woodland critters. Bonnie Blue and Annie Knight: A New Landscape for S*x Work
Send us Fan MailFirst up we're yapping about traveling, type A spirals, and Hinge. Next, we're discussing being called out on your shit and whether or not it's possible to have empathy for someone while still finding humor in the situation. The main topic portion of the episode comes on the heels of the last Rewind episode and we have some thoughts on what seems to be a now viral trend trail blazed by OnlyFans stars Bonnie Blue and Annie Knight. In case you haven't heard these women are sleeping with 100s to 1000s of men in mere hours and it seems as though it's a sparked a competition. What, if anything, does this stunt mean? Are we as individuals assigning our own meanings to it and what impact is it having on society and future generations, good or bad? As always we wrap it up with gripes about wet toddler legs and the trials and tribulations of shopping and grapes to coastal grub and practical fashion. Rewind: Only Fans and AI
Send us Fan MailHey Besties! Welcome back to another Rewind episode of Or Something Like That. Hollis and I will be back on the mics for next week's episode but we've really enjoyed pulling these out of the vault and we hope you've enjoyed listening! First and foremost on today's episode we're making a reference to the title of the podcast which I'm not sure we've ever actually shared with the listeners. If you haven't put it together already I promise we'll dive into that next week! Next, we're sharing some thoughts on choosing baby names and we have a take that might surprise you! Then we're chatting about live theater and entertainment in general, what we like and don't like, why they should bring back the variety show, and that one time we saw the Book of Mormon. Hot take, it was just okay. Next up we're getting into an interesting discussion about Only Fans and share some our own personal boundaries and expectations for relationships. Would you be comfortable with a partner who was subscribed to Only Fans? We're surprised at how common this theme seems to be and we have some opinions. We'd love to hear yours so let us know in the comments. This leads into a conversation about the booming AI industry and we discuss our thoughts, hopes, and concerns about what it means for our future. As always we're wrapping up with gripes about alarms going off and thermostats and a grape to the valiant goodwill employee who was simply not taking any BS from anyone. Rewind: Fallen Idols - Digging Deep on the Allegations Against Nick Carter
Send us Fan MailHey Besties! Our team (by team I mean Hollis and me, we’re the team) is working hard to bring you a new and improved version of the podcast and we are planning to launch a rebrand by the end of the summer. Throughout the next few months while we’re plugging away to bring you an exciting new experience we'll be occasionally releasing some Rewind episodes of previously recorded content from the early days of the podcast that never aired. We’ll still be recording live and current but we thought it would be fun to look back, let you in on the beginning of the journey, and gain some insight on how we’ve evolved thus far. We’re so excited to launch the rebrand and be able to realize and share our full vision for the podcast. You can expect a name change as well as changes to the graphics and visual aesthetic. There won’t be huge changes to the content but we hope to slightly elevate it and we are thrilled to be able to put a mission statement and official brand behind it. We so appreciate all of your support over the past months and we can’t wait to show you what’s on the horizon. We think you’re going to love it! That being said, welcome to the first Rewind episode originally recorded in July of 2024! First up, we’re discussing the hard-hitting questions that kids ask and how you can prepare for some but others not so much and how sometimes even defining the simplest words can feel impossible when you’re put on the spot. Parenting is hard and also hilarious! Next up we’re talking Game of Thrones and House of Dragons amongst other HBO shows and we get into a discussion about the rise of male nudity in television and movies and how it’s different from female nudity. On one hand, justice for women who have been showing their bodies for years while the men have mostly remained clothed until recently, but on the other hand, do we really need it and do we need that much of it? Amidst that discussion we realize that as we get older it gets harder and harder to watch actors portraying minors in super sexualized roles a la that of Euphoria and similar shows. Next, we’re getting into our main topic which is a discussion about the Carter family documentary Fallen Idols (Max 2024). The documentary primarily focuses on Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys and the sexual assault allegations against him and we’ve got thoughts about the allegations, toxic fandom, child stardom, and adult male superstars with underage girls as their target audience. Next, we’re diving into some of our recent anxiety dreams and wondering why more often than not they tend to be about the past and not our current lives. And finally, we’re wrapping things up with gripes about the Clicklist and super glue tubes and grapes to fresh cut flowers and pineapple corers. Thanks for being here!Disclaimer: Opinions shared on this podcast pertain to allegations and alleged facts outlined in the documentary Fallen Idols. Carter maintains his innocence and the legal proceedings are still ongoing. The outcomes of these cases are yet to be determined.
