The Buzby Dog Podcast

Welcome to the Buzby Dog Podcast! In this podcast it is our goal to help you discover how to “Buzby” your dog so that they can live the longest, healthiest life possible. My clients are their dog’s advocates—their champions. They are never complacent, never sitting on the sidelines when they recognize a need they could impact by taking action. My passion is to share this “Buzby” mentality when it comes to being a pet parent. I want to empower you to work in partnership with your veterinarian. The reality is that your veterinarian only sees your dog a few hours a year, while you spend as many hours a day together as possible. Our dogs are such an integral part of our family. I want to use this podcast to help empower and encourage you so that when you lay your head on your pillow at night (probably right next to your dog’s), you can rest easy knowing you are doing everything you can to give your dog the best life possible. So welcome! And thanks for listening! Our goal is to build a

Good news, bad news, and some potentially life-saving info in this episode of The Buzby Dog Podcast. Dr. Buzby shares the story of her sister's dog, Banjo, and an empty bag of chocolate chips. After explaining Banjo's adventure (which included an overnight stay at the emergency hospital), Dr. Buzby details what to do if _your_ dog consumes chocolate. BDP069: Prednisone 101

In episode 68, Dr. Buzby revealed how a lingering health concern led her to seek care from a specialist, who prescribed steroids (prednisone) as a necessary part of her treatment. As an integrative veterinarian, she found this to be a "hard pill to swallow". That personal process offered insight into what many pet owners face when their dogs are prescribed prednisone. This episode is all about those concerns, the reasons to be concerned about prednisone and other steroids, as well as the reasons they are still an essential part of every veterinary (and human) pharmacy. Simply put, steroids are the most powerful class of anti-inflammatory drugs that doctors can prescribe. Dr. Buzby dispels the myths, focuses on the facts, and helps give you a better overview of this commonly used medication. Loving the Buzby Dog Podcast? "Listen to your body." It's become a buzz phrase in our culture. And it's typically good advice! But what about our furry family members who don't have a voice to communicate their needs, and often aren't fully in charge of what their bodies get to do? In this episode, Dr. Buzby shares 7 examples of how YOU can listen to your dog's body and what your observations might mean. Behaviors and postures discussed in this episode are: 1. Limping/lameness 2. Arched/hunched back 3. Limp tail (covered fully in episode 17 of the Buzby Dog Podcast) 4. Cervical disc disease (neck pain) 5. Ear pain 6. Squinty eye(s) 7. BDP065: Disaster Preparation with Dogs

Even during an emergency, your furry family members will need your love, care and attention. Traveling in evacuation for Hurricane Florence, Dr. Buzby shares 8 tips for preparing your family—furry and otherwise—for a disaster. While this is the Buzby family's third consecutive year evacuating during hurricane season, most of the planning Dr. Buzby had done previously was made ineffective by the storm's path. Her story highlights the adage that "a plan may be useless, but planning is invaluable." Buzby Dog Disaster Preparation Tips: 1. Have a written plan and a backup plan. 2. Keep your dog's current medical records with you. 3. Ensure your dog is current on vaccinations. 4. Don't forget your first aid kit. 5. Provide for your dog's physical needs—water, food, bowls, leash, etc. 6. Provide for your dog's emotional needs—safety, security, routine, etc. 7. Board and Go? NO! 8. Always keep proper identification on your dog's collar. Loving the Buzby Dog Podcast? BDP064: Bringing a New Dog Into Your Home - The Story of Jake the Hound

It's never the "perfect time" to adopt a new dog, but as Dr. Buzby says in this episode, "Your home and your heart are never really full." Make sure that your pack has the best chance of a long, happy life together with these takeaways: Quarantine—Separate your new dog(s) from your household pets to decrease risk of disease transmission. BDP057: Lost Pet Prevention & Preparation with Lorien Clemens from PetHub

Never let your pet go naked! That's just one of the excellent tips you'll learn from Lorien Clemens on how to ensure your pet does not get lost, and if they do, how to ensure a swift return home. Lorien is the "Producer of Pawsome" (Vice President of Operations & Marketing Programs) for PetHub, the first company to launch a QR code ID tag for pets. Lorien lives her life asking, "Is what I'm doing right now helping to save more pets?" and her work at PetHub has certainly done that. In just seven years of growth, the company has significantly impacted the Return to Owner (RTO) rate in the United States. In 2010, RTO for dogs was less than 18% and under 2% for cats after being lost. Today, 96% of PetHub members' pets are home in under 24-hours and less than 2% ever reach an animal shelter. ABOUT THIS SHOW
