The Psychology of Depression and Anxiety - Dr. Scott Eilers

There are people who understand depression and anxiety on a personal level and there are people who understand depression and anxiety on a medical level. There are relatively few people who understand both, and I’m one of them. As a clinical psychologist I have a doctorate degree and thousands of hours of professional experience providing treatment for mood and anxiety disorders. I also have 39 years of personal experience managing mood and anxiety disorders as I myself deal with these struggles. This podcast is my attempt to synthesize my personal knowledge with my professional knowledge.

Winning The War On Emptiness: 7 Strategies For Overcoming Anhedonia

Head to https://growtherapy.yt.link/hshEjBV to find your dream therapist today!Anhedonia can make you feel like a background character in your own life—still going through the motions, but unable to feel joy, pleasure, or meaning. In this video, I share seven strategies I personally use when depression leaves me feeling emotionally numb.I’ll walk through checking the lock, scaffolding positive experiences, finding “loopholes,” investing in future joy, apathyception, creating novelty, and what I do when none of those strategies work.If you’re stuck in that numb, repetitive “NPC mode” right now, I want you to remember that your current emotional state can make itself feel permanent—even when it isn’t.If my podcast has helped, my new book, The Light Between the Leaves, goes even deeperNext Steps:📩 Get Practical tools for navigating life with depression and anxiety, delivered weekly.About me:I know what it is to feel hopelessly stuck and worthless to the world in general. In this video, I explain a pattern I've repeatedly seen in myself and in the people I've worked with: not wanting to die because of overwhelming emotional pain, but because life simply no longer feels worth the cost of continuing. I share the behavioral and cognitive changes that have helped me escape these periods and rebuild a life that actually feels worth living.I discuss how sleep, nutrition, movement, finances, relationships, purpose, novelty, gratitude, and realistic expectations all contribute to your emotional "balance sheet." When too much energy is going out and not enough meaning, joy, or connection is coming back in, it's understandable to wonder how long you can keep going. If you've ever felt exhausted by life rather than overwhelmed by it, I hope this gives you a new way to understand what you're experiencing—and a practical place to start changing it. You are not doomed to feel this way forever. If my podcast has helped, my new book, The Light Between the Leaves, goes even deeperNext Steps:📩 Get Practical tools for navigating life with depression and anxiety, delivered weekly.About me:I know what it is to feel hopelessly stuck and worthless to the world in general. Contentment gives me something more stable to build on because it doesn’t require me to feel good in order to recognize that parts of my life are good.I also share five ways I’ve learned to practice contentment, including challenging emotional reasoning, accepting some discontentment, and resisting the belief that one more achievement or purchase will finally make me feel whole. The goal isn’t to convince yourself everything is wonderful—it’s learning when good enough really is enough.

I also explain why pushing good feelings away can become an automatic form of self-protection.Finally, I share several ways I’ve worked on this myself, including gradual exposure to positive emotions, challenging the beliefs that make comfort feel unsafe, and learning to let good experiences last a little longer. How to care less about what other people think, but in a healthy way

Should you stop caring what other people think? I don't think so. I've spent parts of my life caring far too much about other people's opinions—and parts of my life not caring at all. Both caused serious problems. In this video, I share a simple framework I use to decide which criticism deserves my attention and which criticism deserves to be ignored. Why are so many autistic people depressed and suicidal?

Thanks to Grow Therapy for sponsoring this video! Head to https://growtherapy.yt.link/USz9Has to find your dream therapist today! Why are autistic people so much more likely to experience depression, burnout, and suicidal thoughts? In my experience, it’s not because autistic people are “broken”—it’s because the world is often painfully hostile to the way they naturally experience it.In this video, I talk about autistic burnout, sensory overload, social exhaustion, masking, interoception, and why simply existing in modern society can feel overwhelming for many autistic people.I’m not autistic myself, but I care deeply about this topic—and I hope this helps autistic people feel seen and helps non-autistic people understand what life can actually feel like on the inside. If the usual depression advice hasn’t helped, it might be because it wasn’t built for your type of depression. Depression and suicidal thoughts can consume enormous mental energy, even when it looks like you’re doing nothing. In this video, I explain what it actually feels like to live with suicidal ideation—the constant pressure, the invisible battle, and why “just getting through the day” can take everything you have.If this is your experience, I want you to know this: you’re not alone in this fight. If You Survived Early Childhood Neglect And Isolation And Your Adult Relationships Feel Empty

Childhood trauma and emotional neglect don’t just disappear when you become an adult. The coping strategies that helped you survive a painful childhood can quietly sabotage your relationships, mental health, and happiness later in life.In this episode, I explain three common survival strategies people develop in difficult childhoods: losing touch with your needs, feeling disconnected from others, and becoming afraid of vulnerability. These strategies once protected you—but in adulthood they can keep you stuck.Healing starts when you recognize these patterns and slowly begin to replace them with healthier ways of relating to yourself and other people. 5 normal habits that will destroy your mental health

The person you see in your head when you think “me” probably isn’t you. Most of us don’t perceive ourselves accurately—we see a distorted, unrealistically negative version. Not because it’s true… but because your brain is trying (and failing) to protect you from pain.In this episode I explain “The Magnet”: the force that pulls your self-concept downward after experiences like rejection, failure, and embarrassment—so you’ll “reject yourself first” before the world can do it.It’s a defense mechanism… but it comes with two brutal costs:You trade short, sharp pain for a lifetime of dull painYou start preemptively opting out of opportunities, connection, growth, and visibilityIf you live with chronic self-criticism, low self-esteem, or an internal “lowlight reel” that plays on repeat… this episode will help you interrupt it.If my podcast has helped, my new book, The Light Between the Leaves, goes even deeperNext Steps:📩 Get Practical tools for navigating life with depression and anxiety, delivered weekly.About me:I know what it is to feel hopelessly stuck and worthless to the world in general. It’s also massively biased. In this episod, I break down why that conclusion doesn’t hold up, the two other common denominators you’re ignoring (hint: people and a broken world), and the missing data point that changes everything: you don’t actually know your “relationship success rate” compared to anyone else—because you only see your failures, not theirs.I talk about:why hurt is inevitable in real relationshipswhy repair is the real definition of “safe”how confirmation bias and minimization distort your self-imagewhy a relationship ending ≠ a relationship “failing”the “home runs vs at-bats” analogy that makes this click fastIf you’ve been using relationships as evidence that you’re unlovable or broken—this is a necessary reset. If my podcast has helped, my new book, The Light Between the Leaves, goes even deeperNext Steps:📩 Get Practical tools for navigating life with depression and anxiety, delivered weekly.About me:I know what it is to feel hopelessly stuck and worthless to the world in general. ABOUT THIS SHOW
