The Rate of Speech Tool- Fast Isn't Always Faster
“Fast is slow. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.” — Academy classroom sayingWhen traffic starts getting busy, it can be tempting to start talking faster. But faster speech doesn't always make you faster. The faster you talk, the greater the chance of hearing “Say again.” Now you have to repeat the transmission, you've used more frequency time, and you've fallen even further behind. In this episode, we add the Rate of Speech Tool to your ATC Tool Belt and look at how your speech rate needs to work with your writing rate, listening, and Picture. The goal isn't to talk fast. It's to develop a smooth, steady rate that gets the message understood the first time.Fast isn't faster if you have to say it twice.Thank you for listening!!FOR HELP: To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Multitasking Tool- How to Talk/Listen and Write at the Same Time
One of the biggest concerns I hear from Academy students is, "How am I ever going to talk, write, listen, think, and build the picture all at the same time?"The answer may surprise you.Great air traffic controllers don't start by mastering everything at once. They master one skill at a time until those individual skills become automatic. As each tool requires less mental effort, they gain the capacity to add another. That's how true multitasking is built. In this episode, we'll explore why feeling overwhelmed is a normal part of learning, how multitasking develops throughout the Four Levels of an ATC career, and practical techniques you can use to build this essential tool.FOR HELP: To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Phraseology Tool - Why the Details Matter
Most people think phraseology is about saying the right words.Great air traffic controllers know it's much more than that.Phraseology teaches precision. It teaches consistency. It teaches discipline. Most importantly, it teaches you that the details matter. In this episode, we continue building your ATC Tool Belt by exploring why phraseology is much more than communication. From learning the phonetic alphabet and aviation terminology before the Academy to developing precise, standardized transmissions throughout your career, phraseology is one of the first tools that teaches you to think like a professional controller.Thank you all for listening!FOR HELP: To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Listening Tool - The Most Underrated Tool in Your Tool Belt
Great air traffic controllers aren't known for talking more. They're known for listening better. In this episode, we continue building your ATC Tool Belt by focusing on one of the most overlooked—and most valuable—skills in aviation: listening.Listening is much more than hearing words on a frequency. It's building the picture, recognizing patterns, verifying readbacks, anticipating what's coming next, and making better decisions before problems develop.Whether you're waiting for an Academy class date, training at the FAA Academy, or working your first position, becoming a better listener will make you a better controller. In This EpisodeWhy listening is the foundation of effective communicationThe difference between hearing and truly listeningFive techniques to strengthen your Listening ToolHow listening develops through all Four Levels of an ATC careerHow listening supports the Picture Driver and improves performanceThank you for listening!!FOR HELP: To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Learning Tool : Learning How to Learn in ATC
Every air traffic controller starts with an empty tool belt. Some fill that tool belt faster than others—not because they're smarter, but because they've learned how to learn. In this episode, we begin building the first tool in the Learning Toolbox: The Learning Tool. While many students focus on what they need to study, successful controllers also develop how they learn. That skill becomes the foundation for every other tool they'll add throughout their careers.Whether you're waiting on an Academy class date, preparing for your first day, training at your first facility, or mentoring the next generation of controllers, the ability to learn efficiently is one of the most valuable tools you'll ever develop. In This EpisodeWhy learning is the foundation of every successful ATC career. The difference between collecting information and developing understanding. Why successful controllers never stop learning.Five practical techniques to become a better learner. How the Learning Tool develops throughout all Four Levels of your career. • How this tool connects to the Six Drivers of ATC Success.Thank you for listening!!FOR HELP: To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The Journey and the Process- How the 4 Levels and the 6 Drivers Work Together
Over the past few months, I’ve explored two important frameworks on The Side by Side ATC Podcast: The 6 Drivers of ATC Success and The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control. In this episode, I bring those frameworks together and show how they work hand in hand throughout an air traffic controller’s career. The 4 Levels—Pre-Academy, Academy, First Facility Training, and CPC & Training Others—represent the journey. The 6 Drivers—Purpose, Plan, Phraseology, Practice, Picture, and Performance—represent the process that helps you move successfully from one level to the next. While the challenges change at each stage, the fundamentals of success remain the same.Whether you’re preparing for a class date, attending the Academy, training at your first facility, or already a CPC, this episode will help you identify where you are in the journey and which driver may be the key to reaching the next level.Success in ATC isn’t about mastering one stage—it’s about consistently applying the fundamentals throughout your career.FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control - Level 4 - CPC and Training Others
Achieving certification as a Certified Professional Controller (CPC) is a major milestone, but it is not the end of the journey. In this final episode of The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control series, I explore Level 4: CPC & Training Others and discuss how success in ATC evolves from developing yourself to helping develop the next generation of controllers.I examine how the 6 Drivers of ATC Success—Purpose, Plan, Phraseology, Practice, Picture, and Performance—continue to grow throughout a controller’s career. As a CPC, the focus shifts from simply learning the operation to contributing to it through leadership, professionalism, mentorship, and training.Whether you are a student, developmental, CPC, or instructor, this episode is a reminder that success in air traffic control is not a destination but a continuous process of growth. The FAA Academy is where preparation meets performance. After spending weeks, months, or even years preparing for this opportunity, students quickly discover that success at the Academy requires more than intelligence or determination alone. The pace is fast, the expectations are high, and the pressure to perform is real.In this episode of The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control series, we explore Level 2: The Academy and discuss how the 6 Drivers of ATC Success—Purpose, Plan, Phraseology, Practice, Picture, and Performance—become critical tools for navigating one of the most challenging phases of an air traffic controller’s journey. You’ll learn why the Academy doesn’t create success—it reveals preparation.Whether you’re preparing for a class date, currently attending the Academy, or looking back on your own training experience, this episode will help you understand what separates successful students from those who struggle and why the habits developed before Day 1 continue to matter throughout your ATC career.Thank you all for listening!!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control- Level 1 - Pre-Academy
Most people think preparation for the FAA Academy starts on Day 1 in Oklahoma City. In reality, the first level of becoming a successful air traffic controller begins long before you ever walk through the Academy doors. In this episode, I talk about “Level 1 – Pre-Academy” and why the habits, mindset, and preparation you build before training can have a major impact on your future success.I also connect this first level to the “6 Drivers of ATC Success” and discuss how Purpose, Plan, Phraseology, Practice, Picture, and Performance all begin developing before formal training even starts. The students who succeed most consistently are often the ones who arrive prepared mentally, emotionally, and academically before the pressure of the Academy begins. If you are waiting for a class date, attending ATC school, or preparing for the next step in your journey, this episode will help you understand how to start building the foundation for long-term success in air traffic control.FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The 4 Levels of Air Traffic Control- Introduction
Most people think the journey to becoming an air traffic controller is all about getting through the FAA Academy. But the truth is, there are multiple levels of growth in an ATC career — and each level brings new pressure, new expectations, and new opportunities to improve. In this episode, I introduce “The Four Levels of Air Traffic Control”: Pre-Academy Preparation, The Academy, First Facility Training,Becoming a CPC while helping train others. I also connect these levels back to the “6 Drivers of ATC Success” and discuss how Purpose, Plan, Phraseology, Practice, Picture, and Performance continue to repeat throughout a controller’s career.Whether you are waiting for a class date, currently at the Academy, or working through facility training, this episode will help you see the bigger picture of the ATC journey — and why growth in this profession is a continuous process, not a single moment of success.Thank you for listening!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. The 6 Drivers of ATC Success- Driver #5 - Picture
In this episode, I talk about the "Big Picture". I talk about what it is, and WHAT IT IS NOT. I also talk about the picture you need to focus on while you are at the Academy or in training. It's basically this:Big Picture- NOFocused Picture- YES!!The "picture" that air traffic controllers use is not one the keeps the entire sector or airport in our heads. The "picture" controllers use is one that focuses on individual aircraft and how they fit with the aircraft around them. And we do it 1 aircraft at a time. At the Academy, this is SO important. You have to get away from trying to see the entire problem at once. You have to focus on 1 airplane, 1 strip, 1 data block at a time. The focus becomes finding the highest priority task you need to get done, doing it correctly, then finding the next highest priority task you have. And so on until the problem ends or you run out of tasks. Remember, it isn't the "Big" picture, it IS the "Focused" picture. Build your picture 1 task at a time.Thank you all for listening!! The 6 Drivers of ATC Success - Driver #1 - Purpose
In this episode, I start a new series where I talk about the 6 Drivers, or main areas of focus, of ATC success. If you can get these 6 areas strong, then your likelihood of success at the Academy, and after the Academy, will go up immensely. Today, I looked at the first driver: Purpose. If you have a weak purpose, or haven't really thought about your "WHY", then it will be difficult to get past the tough times at the Academy and during your training. On the other hand, if you know your "WHY" and you remind yourself often of why you are in OKC, your chances of success will increase exponentially. That is why this is so important and why it is the first Driver.Thank you for listening!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. In this episode, I talk about one of the quickest ways to lose confidence while you are in training:It's Comparison.Comparison makes you feel behind, even when you are improving. You're often comparing your worst moments to someone else's best.Confidence comes from progress, not comparison. The only comparison that matters is :Your performance today versus yesterday.Thank you all for listening! The Mental Game of Academy Success- The " I'm Behind" Trap
In this episode, I talk about one of the most universal feelings for students at the Academy: the feeling that they are behind. It happens at some point for almost every student who has ever gone through the Academy. It doesn't matter which option you are going through or how much experience you may have, at some point you will feel behind.Remember: Slow is Smooth. Smooth is fast. - Navy SealsFast is Slow. Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast. - Air Traffic ControllersEveryone will feel behind, the worst thing you can do is to try to speed up.Trust your processes. Trust your steps. Trust the work you have put in.When you feel behind, focus on 1 aircraft, 1 step, 1 action. The Mental Game of Academy Success- The Voice Inside Your Head: Self-Talk in ATC
In this episode, I start a series on The Mental Game of Academy, and ATC, Success. This first episode focuses on the Voice in Your Head, or Self-talk.For a lot of us, we are our worst critics. I know I have been over the years. If we allow ourselves to always be negative in our self-talk, then we will always be limiting ourselves. If we have nothing but negative thoughts, our results will probably be negative as well. If, however, we can change that around and be more positive with ourselves and start to be more realistic with ourselves, then we can shatter our self-imposed ceilings and our goals and dreams become attainable. It CAN be done! The ATC Success Cycle- Test, Fail, Learn, Improve, Reenter- Repeat
In this episode, I talk about what I call The ATC Success Cycle. You need this when you want to grow and improve as an air traffic controller. This is especially important if you are at, or going to, the Academy. You will have at least some moments at the Academy where you fail. It is guaranteed. The difference between students who succeed and those who don't is: how they respond to those failures. The Success Cycle is this:You Test ( a new technique for instance). You Fail ( It doesn't work). You Learn ( Why didn't it work)You Improve ( What can I do differently to get better). You Reenter ( You try again). Then you start the cycle all over again. Each time you do, you get better. You grow. You progress.Nick Saban, University of Alabama Head football coach, said, " Don't waste a failure."In ATC, failure is data. The only mistake is when you ignore what it's trying to teach you.Thank you for listeningFOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. If you cannot accept the instruction that you are going to get from your instructors, then you don't have much of a chance of being successful at the Academy. However, if you go into the Academy with the attitude that you are going to get every bit of information you can from your instructors, AND you are going to dedicate yourself to implement that information, then you can succeed at the Academy and beyond. That is what being coachable is all about. The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 5 - The Law of Composure
In this episode, I talk about staying calm or composed at the Academy. The Academy is designed to see if you can stay calm and composed. It will test your composure over and over, and if you are not prepared for that, the chances or your success go down drastically. If you can develop composure and the ability to stay calm and focused in the middle of a scenario, then you WILL succeed! Staying calm and composed is probably the number 1 skill you need to develop at the Academy. It is also one of the top skills the FAA is looking for.So work on it every day. Get with your classmates and put each other under pressure when you practice. You are doing it to help each other!Remember, this is not a recommendation, it's a LAW.Thank you all for listening! The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 4- The Law of Navigation
In this episode, I talk about how anticipation will beat reaction every time when it comes to air traffic control in general and to the Academy specifically.Being able to anticipate what is going to happen at the Academy is hugely important and will make scenarios so much easier than if you stay in reaction mode all the way through.Anticipation= Being, and staying, aheadReaction. = Being, and staying, behindThe only way you can get to the point where you are able to anticipate and know what is coming in a scenario is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 3 The Law of Priorities
In this episode, I talk about a topic that you will hear over and over while you are at the Academy and for the rest of your career as an air traffic controller: PRIORITIES.It starts with understanding that your number 1 priority on any given day is THAT DAY!If you are worried about what is coming up in 3 or 4 weeks, or you are trying to learn something that your instructors have not taught you yet, or you may even not be placing a priority on practicing, then you may have your priorities messed up. And if your priorities are messed up in this career, you have a HUGE problem.Getting your priorities right is a must, that's why this is a Law and not just a suggestion.Concentrate on the fundamentals and MASTER them. Then, you can go on to more advanced things that you will have to know. Without the fundamentals, you won't be able to master the more advanced things that are required.Thank you all for listening! The 7 Laws of Academy Success- Law 2 The Law of Process
In this episode, I talk about the second law: The Law of Process. This law is all about consistency. Day after day, after day, after day...At the Academy, consistency beats "natural talent" every time. Someone with natural talent who doesn't try to increase that talent has already hit their ceiling. On the other hand, if you are consistent about Intense, focused practice then your ceiling will increase every day. That is why this Law is SO HUGE!Don't wait for a "breakthrough" moment. Don't wait until you've had bad runs. Don't have inconsistent routines. Start your time at the Academy with a PLAN and work that plan every day. If you do, I guarantee that you WILL get better!Thank you all for listening! I hope and pray that these episodes will help you! Why Preparation is Key to Success at the FAA Academy
In this episode, I talk about what may just be THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can ever do to help you as a student at the FAA Academy.Being prepared for the Academy is NOT a choice! It is something that you either do, or not. Once you make the choice to not prepare, you will probably never get a chance to change that decision, and that is so very unfortunate. There are 4 major areas that you need to make sure you have prepared for BEFORE you get to OKC:AcademicMental and EmotionalLifestyleExpectations vs RealityI go over each of these areas as well as giving you insight into the "Why" of some of the things the Academy does.Understand this: Talent helps, but Preparation determines who survives and thrives at the Academy.Thank you very much for listening! What Do You Do About the Holidays as a Controller?
In this episode, I talk about what it is like to be an air traffic controller during the Christmas season.I also talk about what it is like to be a student at the Academy during Christmas. I was there myself during Christmas as a student. The most important thing to make sure of is that you have a plan for the Holidays and that you include your family and loved ones. You WILL be able to make memories with your family every year, but, a lot of those years are going to take some planning in order to make those special moments happen. Those memories are worth anything you have to do, any leave you have to take, any shift swap you have to make. They are worth it!!MERRY CHRISTMAS!!Thank you all for listening! How to Take Your Talent to the Next Level
In this episode, I talk about another topic from the amazing John Maxwell. I talk about how we can take our talent to the next level. The steps involved are :Learn to Listen. This is probably the most important skill an air traffic controller needs to do their job well.Understand the Learning Process. This is SO important while at the Academy. You have to understand that your improvement is a process that includes- Action; Looking for and evaluating your mistakes; searching for a better, or correct, way to do the tasks; and starting the process over again.Look For and Plan Teachable Moments. Look for moments where you can learn from someone else AND GET BETTER.Make Those Teachable Moments Count. Put into practice what you learn from the teachable moments. Put them into practice immediately or the moments will be gone and the opportunity lost.Ask Yourself, " Am I Really Teachable?" Am I willing to listen to someone else and learn everything I can from them? Remember- "Everything we know, we learned from someone else!"- John WoodenIt is great to have talent, but there is always a higher level that we can take our talent to if we care enough about being the best that we can be.Thank you all for listening!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. Understanding, and Preparing for, the Beast That is the FAA Academy
In this episode, I talk about how you need to understand what the Academy is going to do to you while you are there. The Academy is going to stretch you, kick you, lift you up on amazing highs, and send you to unbelievable lows. And that is all before you even get close to your evals. One of the keys to succeeding at the Academy is knowing, and preparing for, what is coming. You need to know what to expect. you need to know the goals that the FAA haas for each and every one of you. If you know and understand their goals and the processes they will use to reach those goals, then you can deal with the INEVITABLE ups and downs that are going to happen while you are at the Academy. Those ups and downs are part of the process because they are the same ups and downs you will face for the rest of your career as a controller. So, start preparing yourself when you first get your date to go to OKC. Prepare yourself, mentally, emotionally, and physically for the Academy. If you do this ahead of your arrival to OKC, the probability that you will pass skyrockets!Once you get to the Academy, use your knowledge of the process to get you past the bad days that 100% of you WILL have. What is the Key to being Prepared for Evals?
In this episode, I talk about how you can be prepared for the evals at the Academy.Last week, I talked about NERVES and what you can do to mitigate them as much as possible. This week, I talk about what that looks like.It requires you to commit to becoming better every single day you are in OKC. That commitment is essential to becoming the best you can be while you are at the Academy. If you need help making that commitment, or need help keeping that commitment, let me know. We will set up a time when we can talk and see what you may need to do to make those commitments come true.Thank you all for listening!! Have a great week!!FOR HELP:To set up a FREE call: sidebysideatc.com/scheduler/free-consultPre-AcademyIf you are heading to the Academy in the next few months, I put together a structured 90-day preparation blueprint that walks you through exactly what to focus on each month before you go. How Do I Fight Nerves at the Academy?
In this episode, I go back to a couple of my first episodes and talk about one of the hardest things about the Academy: NERVES.I talk about what you can do to limit the effect of the nerves you are going to have. I also talk about the fact that being nervous before an eval is NOT necessarily a bad thing- it means you care!Prepare as much as you can, and don't let yourself lose sight of why you are there and what you want to accomplish!thank you all for listening! How Do I Learn How to Multi-task at the Academy?
In this episode, I talk about multi-tasking as an air traffic controller.Multi-tasking is doing more than one thing at the same time. If you use that definition, air traffic controllers DO NOT multi-task. We do ONE thing at a time. We just do them so quickly that it appears that we are multi-tasking.The problem with multi-tasking is that when we try to do more than one thing at a time, we don't do anything as well as we could have!! Period!Instead of trying to multi-task, get better at doing one thing at a time correctly and going to the next task quickly. Then do the next task correctly, and so on.Speed kills! Speed is not your goal at the academy. Accuracy is your goal! As you practice and practice and practice, you will get faster naturally. But, always pursue accuracy over speed.Thank you for listening!! Am I a Student or a Trainee while I am at the Academy?
In this episode, I talk about the mindset that you need to have to do well at the Academy. The Academy is not college, and it is definitely not high school. The Academy is unlike anything you have experienced and if you don't have the right mindset going into it, you are likely to get behind and not be able to catch up.You have to treat the Academy as your job, which is exactly what it is. If you have the mindset that you are an employee of the FAA, that your employer has certain expectations from you, and that you are going to do whatever it takes to meet those expectations, then you have a great chance of succeeding. If you don't have that mindset, your chances of succeeding go down drastically.Treat your time at the Academy, or at CTI school, as a job, with the highest expectations on their employees, and you can succeed. Get as many people around you to help you on this journey and help those who are trying to help you. Do these things and you can be on the road to one of the greatest careers there is.Thank you all for listening!!
