043: Soul Care, Human Intelligence, and Leading From Within with Marni Blythe

In this episode of The Story Project, Joanna sits down with Marni Blythe — national speaker, fractional COO, and founder of Full Pocket Coaching — for a conversation that goes deep fast and stays there.   Marni grew up losing everything at 12, a childhood that lit a fire in her she never let go out. From NYU to Fortune 500 boardrooms to dental stages across the country, she has spent 25 years building a framework for the kind of leadership that actually works — and it starts from within.   In this episode, Marni unpacks her Lead From Within Framework, a 6-step approach to human intelligence that no technology can replicate. She talks about why culture is caught, not taught, what a broken culture actually looks like inside a dental practice, and why the answer to burnout isn't another massage — it's soul care.   This one is for every woman in dentistry who is doing all the right things on the outside and still feels like something is missing on the inside.   Key Takeaways Human Intelligence (HI) is a Superpower: In an increasingly automated world, your greatest asset is "Human Intelligence." While AI can create efficiencies, it cannot replace the human elements of compassion, situational awareness, and genuine connection required in healthcare. Addressing Burnout through "Soul Care": Burnout often occurs when the soul is tired, not just the body. Moving beyond standard "self-care" (like massages or exercise) to "soul care" involves deep reflection and identifying what truly feeds your energy. The Power of Vulnerability and Psychological Safety: Vulnerability is the birthplace of connection, creativity, and innovation. In a professional setting, creating "psychological safety"—where team members feel safe to speak their truth and be vulnerable—is the number one reason teams succeed.   Guest Information Marni Blythe is a national speaker, fractional COO, and leadership expert who helps entrepreneurs and healthcare leaders scale smarter without losing their people in the process. With a background in Fortune 100 and 500 companies, she brings big-business strategy to growing teams as the founder of Full Pocket Coaching and co-author of Culture Catalyst.   How to Connect with Marni Blythe Email: [email protected] Instagram: @marniblythespeaks LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/marniblythe Facebook: facebook.com/FullPocketCoaching Website: https://fullpocketcoaching.com/   How to Connect With Joanna  Website: https://www.joannascott.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joannafscott/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joannafscott LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joanna-scott-052a0812/   Resources Mentioned in this Episode Culture Catalyst — Marni Blythe & Tiffany Wuebben -- Welcome to The Story Project—a video-driven podcast spotlighting the voices of high-achieving women in dentistry. 042: "Your Mouth Is Telling on You" — The Dentist Who Built a Brand as Bold as Her Smile

In this episode of The Story Project, Joanna sits down with Dr. Tara Aboumahboub for a conversation that moves far beyond dentistry. Known for blending advanced dentistry with a wellness-focused approach, Dr. Tara is helping shift the conversation around oral health, longevity, and the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body.   From growing up as a creative, sports-loving kid in South Florida to studying biotechnology and nutrition before attending Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Tara's path into dentistry has always been rooted in curiosity, artistry, and whole-body health. Throughout the episode, she shares how mission work in Jamaica shaped her perspective on life, why she believes dentists are missing critical conversations around oral-systemic health, and how social media unexpectedly became a platform for education and influence.    From wild snake stories to thoughtful conversations around longevity, leadership, and visibility, this episode is equal parts educational, inspiring, and deeply human.   Key Takeaways Oral health is deeply connected to whole-body wellness, and inflammation in the mouth can signal much larger health issues throughout the body. The most successful personal brands aren't built through perfection — they're built through authenticity, consistency, and being willing to fail publicly. Fear and courage often exist at the same time, especially when stepping into leadership, speaking, or visibility.   Guest Information Dr. Tara Aboumahboub is a cosmetic and functional dentist practicing at Spodak Dental Group in Delray Beach, Florida. She is the founder of Dentara, a personal brand focused on the intersection of dentistry, wellness, longevity, and lifestyle. Through social media, speaking, and education, Tara is helping bring more awareness to oral-systemic health while encouraging dentists — especially women — to step outside traditional professional boundaries and build brands rooted in authenticity.   How to Connect with Dr. Tara Aboumahboub Email: [email protected] Instagram: @dentara__ Website: spodakdental.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dentara/ TikTok: @dentara__   Resources Mentioned in this Episode Brené Brown — Strong Ground   -- Welcome to The Story Project—a video-driven podcast spotlighting the voices of high-achieving women in dentistry. 041: Practice Before the Game: What Dentistry Can Learn from Athletes with Trish Constantine

In this episode of The Story Project, Joanna sits down with Trish Constantine — a dental revenue cycle and credentialing specialist, former practice co-owner, and someone whose path into dentistry was anything but linear. From being a competitive swimmer from ages 6 to 24 to starting out in nursing and eventually building and selling a practice with her husband, Trish shares how those early experiences shaped the way she approaches challenges, leadership, and growth today.   This conversation goes beyond operations and into the mindset behind it all. Trish talks about what swimming taught her about failure (and why she sees it as a gift), what actually breaks inside a practice when systems aren't in place, and why so many teams feel stuck in survival mode. She also opens up about taking risks, learning as you go, and the idea that if something keeps pulling at you — whether in business or life — it's probably worth pursuing. This episode reveals what it takes to build something meaningful, even when you might not have it all figured out yet.   Key Takeaways Failure isn't the end, it's feedback. Learning to get back in the "pool" is where real growth happens. Most practices don't have a people problem, they have a clarity and training problem that shows up as chaos. If something keeps pulling at you, waiting won't make it clearer — taking action will.   Guest Information Trish Constantine is a dental revenue cycle and credentialing specialist who helps practices build stronger systems and healthier businesses. A former dental practice co-owner and proud Enneagram 8, she's wired to tackle problems head-on and advocate fiercely for dental teams. When she's not improving practice operations, she's usually hiking or horseback riding outdoors.   How to Connect with Trish Constantine Email: [email protected] Website: https://icondentalpartners.com/ Instagram: @trish_constantine   How to Connect With Joanna  Website: https://www.joannascott.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joannafscott/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joannafscott LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joanna-scott-052a0812/     Resources Mentioned in this Episode The E Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber   —Welcome to The Story Project—a video-driven podcast spotlighting the voices of high-achieving women in dentistry. In this episode of The Story Project Podcast, Joanna sits down with Dr. Erin Sheffield — board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, founder of The Doctor is All-In, and a bold voice for women in surgery — for a candid conversation about mastery, resilience, and what it means to fully claim your calling. From fainting during her early surgical experiences to becoming a leader in a field where women remain significantly underrepresented, Erin shares the unfiltered realities of pursuing excellence in a male-dominated profession.   Together, they explore the challenges women still face in surgery, from pay gaps to workplace dynamics, and the power of choosing community over competition. This episode is a reminder that being "all-in" isn't about proving yourself. It's about aligning your work, your health, and your purpose without apology.     Key Takeaways Community combats isolation. Safe, collaborative spaces are essential for women navigating male-dominated professions. You can design your life. High-level careers and family priorities can coexist when you choose alignment over expectation. Belonging isn't up for debate. Women in surgery don't have to question whether they deserve their seat at the table.     Guest Information Dr. Erin Sheffield is a board certified oral maxillofacial surgeon, speaker, educator, and advocate. 039: From Startup Dirt to National Stages: Dr. Ann Bynum's Story

In this episode of The Story Project, Joanna sits down with Dr. Ann Bynum — board-certified pediatric dentist, founder, speaker, and leader — for a conversation about resilience, leadership, and what it really takes to build something lasting. From launching her practice in the late 1990s without the modern tools we rely on today to carving out space in a male-dominated field, Ann shares how she built a career defined not only by excellence, but by intention.   But her story goes far beyond entrepreneurship. After a life-changing health diagnosis shortly after completing an Ironman triathlon, Ann was forced to lean on the very community she had spent years investing in. In this episode, she reflects on connection, dedication, and the mindset that has shaped both her practice and her life. This conversation is about grit, leadership, community, and the choice to pursue excellence no matter the circumstances.   Key Takeaways Point 1: Make deposits in the bank of connection before you need to make withdrawals. Point 3: True leadership requires flexibility, mentorship, and investing in your team's growth.   Guest Information Dr. Ann Bynum is a board-certified pediatric dentist, who survived raising three boys. 012: Everything We Say "No" to Means We're Saying "Yes" to Something Else with Dr. Meghna Dassani

Born and raised in Mumbai, India near her grandfather's dental practice, family is incredibly important to Dr. Dassani and influenced how she lives her life - she learned early on that when you say "no" to one thing, you get to say "yes" to something else. Things she finds worth saying "yes" are time with her children, educating dentists on airway health, and carving time for things that bring joy to her life and the lives of others around her. Dr. Meghna Dassani is passionate about promoting healthy sleep through dental practices. She has helped many children and adults improve their sleep, their breathing, and their lives through her sleep apnea work and in educating dentists all over the country to do the same. Her books and seminars help parents and practitioners understand the essential roles of the tongue, palate, and jaw in promoting healthy sleep. I'm so excited we got to dive into all things health, dentistry, and priorities. Dr. Karen Tindall and Laura Schwindt are passionate about helping women dentists live a life of total wellbeing in all the roles they play. One thing I love about the conversation of total wellbeing is that it's applicable to all women, regardless of age or the season of life they're in. There are so many healthy practices that I wish I knew would be important to my overall wellness in my twenties, that I only made a priority in my forties. 010: Experiencing Your Wildest Prosperity by Defining Your Non-Negotiables with Dr. Summer Kassmel

Welcome to the tenth episode of The Story Project podcast, I am your host Joanna Scott and I am so excited to finally have my dear friend Dr. Summer Kassmel as my guest! Thank you for making time for this conversation, Summer!  Dr. Kassmel shared a story about her dentist growing up, Dr. Hook, who in so many ways was one of the people who inspired her to jump into dentistry. As a child Summer was always curious and asking questions of her dentist, who might have been annoyed at points, but told him she wanted to be a dentist! His response is something she'll always remember.  "You don't want to be a dentist Summer, you should just marry one".  Summer continued by sharing that she also had a teacher tell her she didn't have what it takes to practice dentistry. The combination of both of these men and their lack of encouragement boosted her determination to go to dental school and she's never looked back since. 002: Celebrating International Women's Month and Leading Ladies in Dentistry with Dr. Denise Cua

Dr. Cua of Perch Dentistry and I jumped on a Zoom call to discuss her story, journey into dentistry and the highs and lows she's experienced being a female entrepreneur and practice owner.  We covered all-the-things chatting about Dr. Cua's favorite hobby, her journey from biology into dentistry, how Dr. Shivam Patel (her husband and business partner) first met, the Enneagram, how to work with your spouse, International Women's Month, Lucy Hobbs Project, gender biases she's experienced and how she handles those situations. One of my biggest takeaways was a quote from Dr. Cua who said,  "The question I ask myself is, what will serve me more in this situation?" While sharing her approach to responding to mistreatment, she shared, "Before something comes out of my mouth. I also ask myself the question, what's more important? Is it better for me to use my energy fighting back for what he did or is it better for me to respond professionally and save my energy for someone who respects me? I am very careful where I use my energy".  Dr. Cua, I cannot thank you enough for taking this time to share your story and heart with us on The Story Project. If you'd like to stay in touch with Dr. Cua follow her at: @perch_dentistry  @dcua  Cheers to celebrating all the ladies this month and continuing to have conversations that move us toward equality and wholeness! 001: Overcoming Stereotypes and Society's Standards of Beauty: How Dentists Can Lean Into Who They Truly Are with Dr. Erin Issac

Dr. Erin Issac, a board-certified pediatric dentist and native of Monroeville, PA, is excited to bring a fun, fresh dental experience to the children of Pittsburgh in her practice Winning Smiles Pediatric. Besides making kids smile, Dr. Erin enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching and playing sports (GO STEELERS!), cooking and trying out new restaurants around the city, photography--all of the office photos found in the gallery were shot by Dr. Erin herself, fashion modeling, empowering young girls to be whatever the want to be and traveling the globe.  If you've ever wanted to know anything about Disney World, just ask her…she's been nearly 30 times! "Who were you before the world told you who you should be?"I invited Dr. Erin Issac to be the very first guest of The Story Project because of her perspective and insights as a startup pediatric dentist and woman in dentistry. We discussed the stereotypes, social norms and standards that are placed on women inside and outside of dentistry and how to lean into your authentic self. Having a background in fashion modeling, college athletics and graduating from an Ivy League University made for an incredible dialogue around the truth that young girls should be taught that they can have both brains and beauty. We wrapped up discussing habits that lead to a healthy mindset and how taking care of our mental and physical health is equally important.  Dr. Issac has one of the most curated Instagram feeds full of authentic wisdom too.
