Authority to Judge - John 5:19-29

Son of GodThese verses teach us how the Son can exercise divine judgment and generate resurrection life by his powerful word. It is because, like God, he has life-in-himself. God is self-existent; he is always ‘the living God’. Mere human beings are derived creatures; our life comes from God, and he can remove it as easily as he gave it. But to the Son, and to the Son alone, God has imparted life-in-himself. This cannot mean that the Son gained this authority only after the incarnation. The Prologue has already asserted of the pre-incarnate Word, ‘In him was life’ (1:4). The impartation of life-in-himself to the Son must be an act belonging to eternity, of a piece with the eternal Father/Son relationship, which is itself of a piece with the relationship between the Word and God, a relationship that existed ‘in the beginning’ (1:1). That is why the Son himself can be proclaimed as ‘the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us’ (1 Jn. 1:2). Son of ManIn this context, three strands come together. Jesus is the eschatological Son of Man who receives from the Father the prerogatives of Deity (Psalm 2), a kingdom that entails total dominion. At the same time, he belongs to humanity and has lived a human life. It is the combination of these features that makes him uniquely qualified to judge. Third, judgment in the Fourth Gospel is often linked with revelation (3:19, 8:16; 12:31; 16:8, 11). Judgment descends because men love darkness rather than light. Now ‘the Son of Man’ has already been used in revelatory contexts in this Gospel (1:51; 3:14–15). The entailment of rejected revelation is judgment.1.     The Great Marvel (vs. 19-23)2.     The Great Promise (vs 24)3.     The Great Culmination (vs 25-29)

Is Jesus Equal to God? - John 5:18

Is Jesus equal to God?Jesus declaring himself to be God (Jn 10:30 – I and the Father are one) reveals, 1.     Jesus can forgive sins like God – Mt 26:28 / Lk 2:48-492.     Jesus is the giver of life – John 5:21, 25, 28-29, 6:33, 10:10, 11:25, 14:63.     Jesus is the judge – John 8:15-164.     Jesus grants blessings – John 14:13, 27, 17:135.     Jesus exorcised demons – Luke 11:14-206.     Jesus declares himself to be Lord of the Sabbath – Mk 2:27-287.     Jesus received worship – Mt 14:33, 28:9, 17 Jesus is given, in the Scriptures, the following names, 1.     Alpha and Omega (Rev 1:8, 22:13)2.     Anointed One (Ps 2:2, Dan 9:25)3.     Author of Faith – Heb 12:24.     Author of Life – Acts 3:155.     Author of Salvation – Heb 2:106.     Firstborn – Ps 89:2, Rom 8:29, Heb 1:6

Demonstration of Authority - John 5:1-17

The man at the Pool of Bethesda was afflicted both physically and spiritually. Physically, he was lame; spiritually, he was blind. When Jesus asked him whether he wanted to be healed, rather than answering with faith or hope, he complained that no one was there to help him get into the pool. Even after receiving healing, he showed no gratitude to the one who restored him-he simply walked away without acknowledging Jesus or making any effort to know Him.Physical illness is not necessarily a consequence of sin, as Jesus clarified when He addressed His disciples regarding the man born blind (John 9:3). However, sinful motives can impair one's spiritual state, manifesting in their attitude and actions. Though the man at Bethesda could now walk, his ingratitude revealed that his heart remained unchanged. In contrast, the man born blind was healed both physically and spiritually by putting his faith in Jesus (John 9:38).

Return in Trust - John 4:46-54

News of the healing strengthens the official’s belief in the Messiah. The timing is crucial for the official. Could it be that he believes not because of someone else’s testimony or verbal accounts of Jesus’ action at the temple [cleansing], but rather now because of his personal experience of God’s grace displayed in the healing of his son? This story of the healing of the official’s son points to the nature of true faith.

    Harvest - John 4:27-45

Rely on the sufficiency of the Saviour.Realize we all have the opportunity to participate.Resolve to live and speak the gospel.

  9. 28

Permeations of Providence - John 3:22-36

Why Should You Learn and Study About the Providence of God?To reject the blasphemous statement that God is the author of evil.To demonstrate that God’s eternal power to sustain is just as great as his power to create. To deepen our convictions regarding the absolute autonomy of God and the ultimate subordination of creation to him.

  10. 27

Sent Not to Condemn? - John 3:16-21

The purpose of the mission of the Son is itself grounded in the love of God the Father. This emphasizes and intensifies the love of God. It is God's conscious, free will to love. God's love displayed through the sending of his one and only Son is not based on the loveliness of the people nor their potential, but rather due to God's own character of love. These are the last words of the Lord Jesus with Nicodemus about the new birth and God's mission of redemption.

Good Friday: In Our Place - Romans 3:24-26

Good Friday is the day we reflect and, with deep gratitude, celebrate the once-for-all sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on the cross for our debt of sin. Elder David Payan takes us through a Biblical understanding of the meaning of 'propitiation', a word that sadly is missing from many churches' vocabulary today. Yet rich in meaning and essential in application, the propitiation done by Christ is central to the gospel.

Palm Sunday: The Triumphant Entry of the King-Prophet-Priest

Psalm 118 is a psalm of the Lord Jesus himself. He was surrounded by enemies, attacked by Satan, the spiritual leaders of his did not seek his wisdom or his divine power, rather they sought his death. Yet, this death would mean the demise of this priest-prophet-king, the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus would signal to the entire world that he was the Messiah and that the Father exalted the Lord Jesus to his right hand. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

The New Birth pt 3 - Lifted Up in Exaltation - John 3:9-15

The exaltation of the Son of Man draws men to the cross and then to the empty tomb. The Father gives faith – the Son procures atonement and ransom; the Spirit unites the believer to Christ. The union of believers with Christ furnishes the basis for the spiritual unity of all believers, and consequently for the communion of the saints. They are animated by the same spirit, filled with the same love, stand in the same faith, are engaged in the same warfare, and are bound for the same goal – [eternal life in the Kingdom of God] - Louis Berkof

7 Key Roles of the Holy SpiritRegeneration and the New Birth (New Heart – New Mind) - The Spirit brings about the "new birth," giving spiritual life to those who are dead in sin.Conviction and Conversion – [John 16: Sin, Righteousness, Judgement] - leading them to repentance and enabling them to trust in Christ. Packer - After conversion, the Spirit dwells within believers, progressively transforming them to be more like Jesus, enabling them to produce the "Fruit of the Spirit".Union with Christ [next week – DV] - The Holy Spirit acts as the bond by which believers are united to Christ. He takes what belongs to Christ and makes it known to the believer.Sealing and Guarantee - The Holy Spirit is the "seal" or "earnest" (deposit) on a believer's life, guaranteeing their final salvation and possession of all promised blessings.Assurance - The Spirit bears witness with the spirits of believers that they are children of God. He also helps in times of weakness, interceding for believers in prayer. Empowerment – Mission - The Spirit empowers Christians to bear witness to the gospel and provides spiritual gifts for the edification of the church.1. New Life is a Liberated Life.2. New Life is a Sanctified Life.3. New Life is a Fruitful Life

    The New Birth pt1 - Regeneration - John 3:1-15

1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Titus 3:4–7 (ESV)4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

    Two Chairs - Psalm 1

The Psalms show little nuance on eternal matters. Two ways, two paths, two chairs. One leads to righteousness and eternal life, the other leads to wickedness and destruction. In this sermon, David Payan, an elder at CRBC, unpacks Psalm 1, its connection to Ephesians 2, and the implications of choosing the wrong chair.

    Call - John 1:35-51

Every Christian has a story of how they came to know Christ and follow Christ. Four of the first disciples came to know Christ because of the testimony. God's effectual call is irresistible, and the call to the gospel and the Messiah is a call to be rescued and delivered. In pure Puritan fashion, here are 6 applications from the text to help you in your evangelism.1.     Focus on Faithfulness (not results).2.     Proclaim the whole gospel message.3.     Rely on the Holy Spirit to open the eyes and regenerate the heart.4.     Purposeful Supplication prayer. (FPRU: pray in faith; make the prayer personal; make the request specific; pray in urgency )5.     Patience6.     Always Point to the MessiahDivine sovereignty is not a hindrance but rather the foundation for confident evangelism, providing the assurance that results belong to God. Faithfully communicate the gospel message about God, sin, Christ, rescue, repentance, while leaving the results to God – for he alone has the power to change hearts.website: https://www.covenantredeemerbaptistchurch.org/ youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@CovenantRedeemer
