What We Think About Us

Hi, my name is Grace, and welcome to What We Think About Us. Basically, the intention of this podcast is to continually ask, “What do we, as humans, think about humanity?” What do we think about ourselves, others, the world we all live in, and the phenomena we share? And the reason I want to know is truly just because I’m curious. I’m fascinated by this idea that beneath someone’s tangible physical form, there exists all this non-tangible matter made up of their custom experiences, thoughts, and opinions. And I don’t care how smart or famous or eloquent you are, I think that that matter, matters! That matter is what I’m curious about and what I’m hoping to dive into…in a metaphorical, inquisitive, non-gross way lol. :)NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Viewpoints shared by guests are not necessarily shared by the host, and vice versus. Hate speech will not be permitted. Feedback is welcome if something said causes hurt or offense.

This week I spoke with Christina (Steen Catucci) about online behavior. In addition to stand up, improv, and TV writing, Christina is an incredibly talented, comedic content creator on TikTok and Instagram. However, as we know, people can be disgusting and hateful online. It was shocking to hear about some of Christina’s negative experiences with people online that included hate comments and plagiarism. It was also fascinating to hear Christina’s takeaways from all these experiences, and her strategies for navigating her career online today. Website: Steen CatucciInstagram: @insta.steenResearch done to show TikTok or Instagram taking down content by queer creators:Edinburgh Research - Explorer Experiences of censorship on TikTok across marginalised identitiesBBC - TikTok admits restricting some LGBT hashtagsthem - TikTok Admits It Suppressed Reach of Queer, Fat, and Disabled CreatorsReuters - TikTok apologises for censoring LGBT+ contentNews is Out - Queer creators grapple with TikTok ban and Meta policy changesTRIGGER WARNINGMentions of domestic violence, childhood abuse, s*icide. NOTEUgh, it looks like I need to work on a few mic issues; mine would sometimes cut Christina’s audio out when we talked at the same time (I didn’t notice till after we recorded). It was fascinating to hear Hannah discuss her changing views on what success with her art looks like: maybe it’s not working full time as an artist, maybe it’s not being as popular/famous as possible, etc. I also loved getting to hear Hannah’s thoughts on employers’ resistance to remote work, the concept of ‘quiet quitting’, and whether we as humans are meant to work. Katherine discusses how she got into teaching, what teaching at two very different types of schools has been like, and how she has learned to juggle all the varying relationship dynamics that come with this job. Play - Sienna

This week I spoke with Sienna about play. What a delight! We both cringed a little at the idea of discussing “play”, because… let’s just say it out loud: it is sort of a cringey topic/word. HOWEVER, we both agreed play, fun, and laughter are the things that we most enjoy about life. So we dove into discussing WHY play can feel cringey, what gets in the way of adults experiencing play, and the differences between “socially acceptable play” for adults vs “play-for-the-sake-of-play”, which can feel more vulnerable/high stakes because there is no capitalistic advantage to it. Ghosting - Bebb

In this episode with Bebb, she shares her thoughts on when it is, and isn’t ok to ghost. Ghosting is about intentionally disconnecting from someone, so as we explored this more, the conversation led Bebb to explore the opposite of ghosting as well: intentional connection. She discusses expectations within relationships, how to maintain relationships when life circumstances and responsibilities get in the way (health, work, family, etc.), as well as creative ideas for connection. I also can’t thank Bebb enough for being so open and vulnerable about her experience with chronic health issues. This change led him to question his previously held beliefs, make multiple moves around the country, and commit to pursuing comedy. In this episode, Christina, a self-proclaimed ambivert, gives her thoughts on how, in her opinion, extroverts can better care for introverts, and vice versa, how introverts can better care for extroverts. A lot of this revolves around understanding and respecting boundaries that look different from your own. What is success? How do we define this for ourselves? How do we avoid defining success by societal influences that don’t actually resonate with us? For this episode, Liz and I dove into some of these questions. It was lovely to hear the ways in which Liz has reframed what success means to her in both her personal and creative life. However, she shares that it’s not always easy to remain in alignment with this new definition. We dive into the trappings of perception and the tempting pursuit of “shiny” metrics. Perfectionism vs. Preparation - Ashley

Hello and welcome to What We Think About Us. This week we’re talking about perfectionism vs. preparation. When is preparation good and when is it actually perfectionism in disguise, keeping you from doing something, keeping you from taking a leap? The idea of finding the balance between these two things and just knowing when to prep and when to jump has been on my mind a lot lately so it was really great to get to ask Ashley, our guest this week, what her thoughts and insights about this are. Ashley is an actress, comedian and entrepreneur. She has a new YouTube show that we talk about during the interview. It’s called "It Takes a Universe." Her mission with it is to interview diverse artists and additionally to help up and coming artists, which is really cool. In our conversation, Ashley goes over what her preparation process was for creating "It Takes a Universe" and also her process/mindset shift of letting go of perfectionism with it. We also talk about her journey with perfectionism while growing up, what it’s like to work with people who aren’t prepared at all and how she’s consistently evaluating whether she’s in prep mode or perfectionism mode. It felt like a very rich conversation and I appreciated her openness!Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Romanticizing Your Life - Rachel

I am technically Gen Z but not really Gen Z.  I’m 26 so I’m a "zillenial", but my younger sister, Rachel, is definitely Gen Z, definitely trendy, and very cool. :) So today I got to talk with her about the very trendy topic of romanticizing your life. What does this look like? Why is this popular? And what are some good ways to do this: to make our lives feel more romantic. Rachel also talks a bit about what she thinks the difference is between the romanticizing your life trend and the main character trend… and she’s just a smart, funny gal that I’m so lucky to have as a sister and lucky to get to chat with today. I loved it, and I hope you do too. Enjoy!Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Habits - Julia

For this episode I got to speak with my friend Julia about habits. It was so interesting speaking with Julia because at the beginning, you’ll hear that she doesn’t think of herself as someone who has good habits or very many good habits, which is totally fine, but the more we talked, at least for me, I was noticing that she is someone who seems to have really great balance in her life, in her actions and her mindset about things, and that includes when it comes to having habits and sticking with them, but also being kind to yourself about not being perfect with habits etc. So I’m excited for you to hear the way she talks about some of those things; I think she’s very wise. We also talk about the phenomenon of habits & routine culture on social media. She shares a lot of beautiful insights about how her habits/relationship with food has changed and we also briefly explore whether you are your habits, ‘do your habits define you?’… you know, very light easy breezy question: ‘who are we?’ It was a great convo, check out Julia’s instagram and YouTube: @kointheknow and I hope you enjoy our episode!Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Bravery - Jordyn

In this episode, Jordyn and I talk about bravery. We discuss the ways in which bravery can look different for different people, the difference between bravery and recklessness, the connection between bravery and vulnerability, and how bravery, or lack thereof, can affect our relationships. Jordyn also shares stories from her life where she had to be or chose to be brave: being a performer, starting her own business, and ending a marriage. I left feeling inspired by Jordyn’s bravery and motivated to be brave myself. I hope you enjoy!Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Creativity - Preston (PM)

Today I am talking with my friend Preston about creativity. Preston is one of those people who is literally good at everything; however, he primarily expresses his creativity via music and improv. Preston shares a bit about his creative process, his mindset for when discouragement or burnout arrive, his opinion on the discourse around copying vs. inspiration, how to give and receive negative feedback about creative projects, how he has implemented creativity into his life in a non-artistic way and lots more. I really enjoyed listening to his opinions and experiences, and I hope you enjoy as well. Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. Mental Health - Eyeru

This week I got to speak with my good friend Eyeru about mental health. I had originally reached out to Eyeru asking if she would be willing to talk about self-care and she graciously said “I actually think I would have more to say about mental health. Let’s talk about that.” Which I love! It’s really just so generous. Mental health is such an important topic but I think I felt sort of hesitant to ask someone to talk about it so I just feel so grateful for her openness and excitement about talking about it. In our conversation, Eyeru discusses her journey with her own mental health: getting a diagnosis, finding community, going on and off medication, etc. She also gives such great advice for people experiencing challenges with their mental health and for people who have loved ones in their life experiencing poor mental health. Eyeru is just the best, and I learned so much from her. I felt honored to hear her story; it’s beautiful to hear her talk about it. I hope anyone listening can feel encouraged by Eyeru's story or at least feel less alone. Support the show✨ For WWTAU updates check out @wwtaupodcast on Instagram.NOTE: The goal of this podcast is to hear many different perspectives. ABOUT THIS SHOW
